what was once only imagined

is evermore possible

Message From The World Congress Chair Welcome to the XVII UIP World Congress, hosted by the American College of Phlebology (ACP) on September 8-13, 2013 in the Hynes Convention Center, a world-class facility in historic Boston, Massachusetts, USA. In planning this important meeting, our goal has been to present the most extensive and comprehensive scientific meeting of the UIP ever convened. The work of Program and Scientific Committees, as well as of the ACP staff, has been to bring together world experts to address the full spectrum of topics in the field of phlebology, to provide the most up-to-date scientific information available. For the first time, all plenary sessions will feature simultaneous translation into Spanish. Additionally, translators will be available in the convention center to help non-English speakers navigate their way to their destinations and activities. Throughout the week, attendees will enjoy opportunities to meet and reunite with colleagues from around the world. We have put together a fun social program too, since there is much to see and enjoy around pedestrian-friendly Boston during colorful autumn in New England. After consultation with our industry supporters in Monaco, the Program Committee has planned a free afternoon for Wednesday September 11. And also make sure you don’t miss the spectacular gala dinner on Thursday evening, September 12. Updates and featured segments of the program will be regularly posted and sent electronically to apprise you of all that is in store at UIP XVII World Congress. On behalf of the American College of Phlebology, I extend a warm welcome and look forward to seeing you, your family, and your friends in Boston in September.

Best Regards,

Nick Morrison, MD, FACS, FACPh, RPhS President, UIP XVII World Congress Vice-President, North American Region, UIP

Message From The UIP President Ladies and Gentlemen, Approaching is one of the most important moments of my presidency of UIP: the XVII World Congress in Boston (USA). The UIP conferences, which are held every four years, represent the most important scientific event for phlebology worldwide and are eagerly awaited by all practicing phlebologists – the young and the more experienced. Phlebology is a specialty booming around the world, attracting the attention of multiple branches of medicine ranging from cardiac surgeons from great centers to general practitioners in small communities. This is due to the extremely high incidence of venous pathologies as well as the social and economic impact of these diseases that represent a formidable burden to the people in daily activities, reducing or even completely negating the ability to work in their most productive years of life. The choice for the seat of the XVII World Congress fell in the city of Boston, MA. This city is one of major cultural and scientific centers of the world with its famous University (Harvard) and technology centers (MIT). Historically, it played a key role in the desire for the Independence of America with its famous episode of “The Boston Tea Party” that helped give rise to the formation of the great American Nation. It is also well known worldwide for its tourist attractions. Dr. Nick Morrison and the American College of Phlebology staff are doing a great job to offer an unforgettable stay in Boston, both from a scientific standpoint as well as a social and cultural one. As President of the UIP, I’m very happy to invite you to attend this important scientific event. I wish a happy stay in Boston to all participants of this congress. Many thanks and greetings to all.

Angelo Scuderi, MD President of the UIP

Workshop Descriptions Ultrasound-Guided and Surface Sclerotherapy During this session attendees will use phantom models with ultrasound to learn and become comfortable with different ways of vein access for endovenous therapies. They will become familiar with the treatment of superficial veins using sclerotherapy. Treatment plans according to the size and location of the veins will be discussed. Pre and post treatment protocols will be reviewed. Reticular and spider vein treatment with injection sclerotherapy will be discussed and hands-on practice will be available for attendees. Unique sclerotherapy models will be available to perform surface sclerotherapy.

Endovenous Ablation During this session leg phantom models will be used to review technical steps of endovenous ablation. Attendees will have the opportunity to obtain vein access, sheath placement, catheter advancement and positioning. Different endovenous technologies will be discussed for saphenous ablation including laser and radiofrequency. Technical tips to overcome challenging venous anatomy will be discussed. Indication, limitation and complications will be reviewed.

Ultrasound MONDAY - During this workshop, attendees will be guided through a diagnostic venous duplex examination on live models. The workshop focus will include ultrasound diagnostic techniques, ultrasound identification of the deep and superficial compartments, and perforators. Ultrasound ergomonics will also be discussed. This hands on session is intended for individuals with limited ultrasound skills. Attendees will have “hands-on” opportunity to use the ultrasound device on live models. THURSDAY- During this ultrasound workshop, attendees will be guided through a diagnostic venous duplex examination on live models. The workshop focus will be on demonstrating reflux provoking maneuvers, the pitfalls in duplex diagnosis, and venous hemodynamics. This hands-on session is intended for individuals interested in venous reflux detection and the variations in ultrasound techniques.

XVII World Meeting of the International Union of Phlebology • September 8–13, 2013 • uip2013.org

Compression Therapy During this workshop attendees will have hands-on experiences with applying different compression devices (multicomponent bandages, self-adjustable Velcro-band devices and compression stockings) on their own legs. Interface pressure measurements will help to understand the physical property and the different mode of action of each device and to enable the attendees to perform proper compression, adjusted to various indications (chronic edema and lymphedema, leg ulcers, deep vein thrombosis and post-thrombotic syndrome, compression after varicose vein procedures).

Pharmacomechanical Thrombolysis Using flow models under fluoroscopic guidance, the attendee will go through the steps of performing pharmacomechanical thrombolysis. Indications and timing for thrombolysis will be discussed. Indications and techniques for venous stenting will be reviewed. Advantages and disadvantages of available devices will be reviewed.

IVC Filter Placement and Retrieval Attendees during this session will have hands-on experience with placement of IVC filter from either the femoral or jugular approach. Using simulation the attendees will perform IVC venography to identify vena cava and renal veins, select appropriate position for filter placement and deploy IVC filter. Indications for IVC filter placement will be discussed. Using the simulation model, attendees will also have the opportunity to retrieve an IVC filter. Technical tips for successful retrieval will be discussed.

Pelvic Vein Embolization During the workshop attendees will use a flow model to perform an ovarian vein embolization. Technical steps of vein access and techniques for embolization will be discussed. Indications and complications will be reviewed. Using fluoroscopic guidance steps for ovarian vein selective catheterization and coil embolization will be performed.

IVUS During this workshop attendees will use an anatomic model to perform IVUS and identify anatomic structures and pathologic lesions. Simulation models will help attendees become comfortable identifying venous anatomy from the hepatic veins to the femoral veins. Learn to use IVUS to make measurements, identify areas of stenosis and recognize compression versus thrombus. Become familiar with using IVUS to determine location and sizing of stents in the venous system.
