CalmA
CalmA Core Studio 1, 2019 Instructor: Carlos Banon
The Studio postulates that the Museum of Modern Art ( MoMA ) in New York extends a satellite location to Singapore to enable the engagement of this mission to Asia’s unique geopolitical, material and cultural productions of art. Housing no permanent collection, it is a place for modern art to come and go. This exercise intends to update the concept of the museum and to call on architecture to play a new active role at the interface between the digital, physical and the social.

To ensure continuity, the partition of the spaces within the museum was a result of using lines of multiple circles tangent to the original walls of the building.
CalmA is shaped based on existing plantations that reside on the given plot as well as existing circulations. The museum aims to create an area for artworks that takes in the setting of nature as well as highlighting a space for the public to inteact with the art without the need to physically enter the building. CalmA doubles s a public nature space as well as being a museum.

The notion of “Articulated Ground has gained importance in the rethinking of open space within dense urban environments and the necessary re-thinking of the relation between private and public spaces as well as the built and green spaces. This exercise uses the paper and applies a fixed sequence of simple geometric transformations such as folding without actually dividing the paper to explore on articulated ground and space making.

The design was a result as a series of 9 curved circular folds that mimics the hill. This would allow the hill to be completely walkable and accesible in all areas. The folds acts as a divider and a shelter to the private spaces in adequate shading.

Solo
Solo Core Studio 1, 2019 Instructor: Carlos Banon
architecture portfolio
This exercise aims to use basic geometric operations on three basic volumes, the geometric encounter of a square, circle and a triangle to address circulation, visual continuity or fragmentation and different levels of intimacy and privacy amongst others. The cottage is a modest but pervasive building type. It is detached, a small solitary construction, ideally to be placed in a picturesque and remote natural territory, far from the contingencies of the urban confinements.

Solo
Solo
A humble home for one or two, the cottage has a curved walkable roof that blends with the landscape with no internal walls, and offers a private interior courtyard space, allowing a glimspe of the outside landscape view while ensuring the private rooms remain unseen from afar. Being here evokes feelings of Solo from reality.

Architecture can be seen as an interface which mediates the distribution of information between the body and environment. This project aims to design an ‘interface’ bewteen the interior and exterior. The context for this workshop is at Ho Chi Minh City, where the tube house is the particular typology of housing caraterising the most of the city fabric. The design does not focus on the interior resolution of spaces, just the ‘interface’. Their very long proportion creates gradients of light intensity, intimacy, privacy and relationships with the exterior. The envelope is the interface between the interior spaces and the urban concept, hence rethink and redefine the concept of openings.

Stretched Metal
Stretched metal sheets are flexible, thin and light, suitable for the patterend Facade.
Metal Frame
Steel columns are used to support the weight of the floor slabs above and are attached to the facade stretched metal sheets.. Steel responds well to both tension and compression.
Concrete
Cedar Wood
Cedar wood is used for the extension as it is light yet strong enough to support loads, the space can thus be used as a balcony. It can also be easily attached to the concrete floor slabs.

Concrete is used for the floor slabs for its strength and favourable response to compression.

Pixelated Sand
Pixelated Sand Digital Design and Fabrication, 2020 Instructors: Stylianos Dritsas
The Exercise explores the idea of abstract landscaping through the use of parametric design and interation. The design makes use of the CNC machine to carve out the design.
architecture portfolio
Our project was inspired on exploring waves to create a landscape, with intersection between these waves to form undulating spaces. With the CNC machine, it allows precise replication of fine details, further iterations our project taps into the idea of creating a optical ullision of a low resolution visual through a high resolution result, incorporating the idea of pixelation.

The grasshopper component makes use of the component called perlin noise in order to inverse the effects in order to create sculpture like carves. By lowering the amount of mesh, it imitates a low resolution effect, hence producing the illusion of pixelation.

This exercise explores ways to articulate spaces underground through carving of voids out of a solid mass to produce spaces with different characteristics and qualities. This is done through a methodical and systematic approach link design operations to specific results. This is done through enaging in a physical plaster cast and assembling any object within a box to pour plaster, and remove the object to create negative voids. Further analysis of the spaces link design operations to specific results and documenting the appreciation of the spaces and voids created with the help of the 3D scan. For this exercise, the main operation and object used to cast was Zip Lock Bags with different set of operations to create different effects.

Tranquility is an art piece that describes the landscape as a habitat for humans for humans to use while reminding them where their functionality of their utilities comes from nature. The chair symbolises highlighting nature as a use but also as an appreciation for nature and acknowledging the movenents and the liveliness of nature. Sitting on the chair allows one to stop and appreciate the sounds and liveliness of the nature, each subtle difference in the movements of nature eg. the rustling of the trees, makes the place unique, emphasising landscape as a place. Lastly, introducing a lone chair may seem to interrupt the scene as it disturbs the otherwise natural site, however, the origins of the chair comes from nature.
