How does a Car Exhaust System Function?

Parts of the Exhaust System: Exhaust Manifold: Usually made of cast iron, aluminium, or stainless steel, an exhaust manifold is the first component of an exhaust system. It is an assembly that collects gas from the cylinders of an engine. The role of an exhaust manifold is to channel exhaust gas into one pipe after collecting it from multiple pipes stretching out from the cylinders.


Oxygen sensors: The next component of an exhaust system is an oxygen sensor. As the name denotes, it is a sensor that evaluates the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas. It sends the information of oxygen ratio to the brain of the car, ECU(Engine control unit). ECU adjusts the air to fuel ratio according to the information sent by the oxygen sensor. There are a total of two oxygen sensors in the exhaust system. One is positioned after the exhaust manifold and the other at the end of the catalytic convertor. The first oxygen sensor measures the level of oxygen in the raw exhaust gas. Whereas, the second oxygen sensor measures the level of oxygen after the treatment of exhaust gas.


Catalytic conver tor: A catalytic converter completes the process of burning that remains incomplete in a combustion chamber. The redox reactions-reduction and oxidation- help in harmful gasses as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides from the exhaust. A catalytic convertor detoxifies and voids the gas emission from harmful gasses.


Muffler: A Muffler is the next component of an exhaust system that contains a series of baffles. These baffles help in reducing and damping the noise of engine combustion and exhaust gas. Due to a muffler, we hear absolutely minimal noise of a vehicle compared to the noise that it is capable of producing.

Tail Pipe: The last component of an exhaust system is a tailpipe. It is the part people usually misconceive as the whole exhaust system. It is the channel through which the car emissions expel into the air.


How does an exhaust system work? The combustion cylinders in the engine are responsible to burn fuel, which produces exhaust gas as a by-product. The exhaust manifold is attached to the cylinders in a way that its pipes go to the cylinders. It collects the gas from the pipes and collects them into a single pipe. The oxygen sensor after the manifold informs ECU about the level of oxygen. A large amount of oxygen means the car has not used fuel much, and a low amount of oxygen means more fuel is consumed by the car.


How does an exhaust system work? Then comes the catalytic converter that converts harmful gasses into harmless gasses. After the catalytic converter, there resides an oxygen sensor. After the treatment of the exhaust gases by catalytic converters, they must be rich in oxygen and carbon dioxide. If the amount of oxygen is less, a catalytic converter is not properly working. The mufflers reduce the noise of gasses, and they expel through a tailpipe.
