NEW LAW ON PAID SICK LEAVE After the global spread of coronavirus, a new scheme for paid sick leave has been announced but the government of the UK. According to the scheme, all the payments are statuary so all the rules must be followed. As per the statutory sick leave pay, employees of any age are entitled to claim sick pay as long as they are earning ÂŁ120 per week from 6 April 2020. Before, paid sick leaves used to start from day 4, which means that a sick employee will get paid stating from the 4th day of his leave. However, after the coronavirus outbreak, the rules have changed from day fourth to day one from 13th March 2020. Sick leave pays will be payable from day 1 whether it is SSP or SMP.

As per the general information, all employees working in the UK are entitled to paid sick leaves according to the type of their employment and the number of leaves they have to take. However, the coronavirus scheme has brought about some changes in the process of sick leaves that are payable. To claim for payment according to the new law on paid sick leaves, you have to fulfil the following requirements.


Your employer must be informed that you won’t be able to work for a while due to the sickness.

Your employer may require you for a “return to work” interview after you get better.

You will need a sick note if you have been on leave for more than seven days

If you earn more than £120 a week on a zero-hours contract, you can still claim for sick leave pay.

If you are self-employed, you are not entitled to this claim.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU ARE ENTITLED TO SICK PAY


STATUTORY SICK PAY (SSP) SSPs were first allowed after the fourth day of being sick. After the coronavirus update, any employee earning over £120 per week is entitled to Statutory Sick Pay of £95.85 per week starting from the 1st day of his leave. This pay can be granted up to 28 weeks of remaining ill. If your employer stops paying you after the 28th week, you can still be entitled to Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). If you are getting paid less than £120 per week, you can look for your entitlement in the Universal Credit or Contributory Employment and Support Allowance. Make sure you report your sickness as soon as you can, otherwise, you won’t be considered eligible for the claim.


STATUTORY MATERNITY PAY (SMP) SMP is payable to female employees who have or are about to have a baby. Statuary maternity pay is mandatory once the employee fulfils all the requirements including the following: 1. 2. 3. 4.
