PHOEBE’S CLOSET LTD ABOUT

Phoebe's Closet Ltd. is a surface pattern design company dedicated to creating original prints for the apparel and home furnishing markets. It draws inspiration from its extensive antique and vintage textile collection and prioritizes preserving the integrity of the original patterns while adding a contemporary twist.

Phoebe's Closet Ltd. was established in 1997 as an antique document company that sold primarily in New York City to home furnishing companies. In 2022 it debuted its first collection of original designs inspired by its vast archive. The patterns generate a sense of timeless tradition with a modern touch.

Clients have included Ralph Lauren, Charlotte Moss, Tommy Hilfiger, Martha Stewart, Schumacher, LL Bean and many others. The company collaborates with clients on design concepts and trends and has exhibited at numerous trade shows including Surtex, Printsource and the Sturbridge Vintage Fashion and Textile Show.

DEIRDRE COUGHLIN OWNER/DESIGNER

Deirdre is a surface pattern designer who has loved print and pattern from an early age. She grew up in a large and creative family on a hobby farm in Connecticut. She was greatly influenced by her mother, "Bunny," who had a deep appreciation for preserving the past and a unique sense of design. Ultimately, Deirdre studied textile design at Syracuse University and has worked in the industry ever since.

She started her career working at a hand-painted and batik textile studio in San Francisco. Then moving to New York City, she worked in different facets of the textile design industry. When her first child, Phoebe, was born in 1995, so was her antique document business, Phoebe’s Closet Ltd. Deirdre’s sheer love of textiles and collecting them naturally led her on this path.

After moving to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont a few years ago, Deirdre pivoted back to designing again. She gathers inspiration from the beautiful area she lives in, yet never forgets her past and the plethora of memories it has yielded. Many are sprinkled in the stories behind her designs.

Deirdre lives with her husband and their two rescue dogs. They are proud parents of three grown children. She enjoys traveling, antique shopping, tennis, biking, skiing, museums, cooking, and reading and cherishes visits with friends and family.

BLOCK PARTY

The seed for the Block Party Collection was first planted after I bought a beautiful antique quilt constructed of many different block prints. The quilt inspired me to create an array of patterns that worked together in a timeless and comfortable way. Much like gathering a group of eclectic friends together to learn from and laugh with.

BLUE SKIES

The Blue Skies Collection was designed in honor of indigo’s beauty and rich history. I wanted to portray the comfortable quality that indigo radiates and pay homage to its service throughout time. Indigo is one of the oldest dyes in the world and has been used in fabrics from fine silks to blue jeans. It’s also believed to affect the powers of concentration and memory. Many of the patterns in Blue Skies are derived from our antique indigo collection in hopes of paying tribute to this incredible dye that has been around for more than 6,000 years.

HARRASEEKET

The Harraseeket Collection is a reflection of my childhood summers spent in southern Maine. I thought about the family houses along the coastline that were passed down from generation to generation, and imagined what their interiors looked like. Undoubtedly, nothing too fancy, but much loved and well worn. The Harraseeket Collection reflects the simplicity and relative easiness of those iconic days.

WILLOUGHBY

The Willoughby Collection was designed to provide some respite from the turbulent times we are living in. The uncomplicated yet fun patterns are both bold and peaceful. I drew inspiration from basic shapes and soothing colors. I also reflected on the simpler times in my life and where I find peace, and Lake Willoughby is one of those places. Although this group evokes youthfulness, it’s sophisticated enough for adults, with the whimsical charm of days gone by.

SNOW DAY

The designs in the Snow Day Collection are influenced by the feeling of a “bluebird day,” a sunny, cloudless one when the air is freezing yet the sky is so blue and sunny that you forget how cold it is outside. It is about embracing the winter months with friends and family, and finding joy in the shorter days and longer nights. The patterns portray a sense of nostalgia of the cheerful snow days from our youth.
