THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION In colleges and universities, academic degrees are conferred at commencement exercises. Originally, the term “commencement” meant the inception of the student graduate as a teacher and his recognition as such by his master and other members of the profession. Thus, the term once marked an actual beginning. The processional and recessional of students and faculty dressed in academic regalia is a traditional part of these commencement exercises. The history of academic dress goes back to the medieval universities. In the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking form, they were under the jurisdiction of the church. Those studying wore a habit or cloak to which was attached a cowl or hood which could be pulled up over the head or thrown back, according to weather conditions. Later, the gown served the dual purpose of providing warmth in the unheated halls as well as uniformity of dress. The hood seems to have had three uses: a covering, a shoulder cape, and a bag for collecting alms. It is believed that when large wigs were worn, the cape part of the hood was cut open in front and the entire garment, cape and hood proper, was allowed to fall back, producing approximately the effect seen today. After wigs went out of fashion, the original shape was not restored. The master’s hood is longer than the bachelor’s and the doctor’s longer than the master’s Gowns commonly worn in the colleges and universities of this country have pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree, long closed sleeves (with a slit for the arm) for the master’s degree, and bell-shaped open sleeves for the doctor’s degree. The master’s and bachelor’s gowns have no trimming. The gown for the doctor’s degree is faced down the front with black velvet with three bars of the same across the sleeves; or these facings and cross bars may be of velvet of the color distinctive of the faculty or subject to which the degree pertains. The cap is an essential part of the academic dress and it is to be retained on the head throughout all academic exercises except during prayer. In particular, the cap is not to be removed at any point in the conferment of a degree. All hoods are lined with silk showing the official colors of the institution which conferred the degree, and all are trimmed in specified widths with velvet signifying the degree. Following are some of the colors that may be seen on hoods:
ARTS AND LETTERS–white BUSINESS & ACCOUNTANCY–drab DENTISTRY–lilac ECONOMICS–copper EDUCATION–light blue ENGINEERING–orange FINE ARTS (inc. Architecture)–brown HUMANITIES/ JOURNALISM–crimson LAW–purple LIBRARY SCIENCE–lemon
MATH AND SCIENCE–gold MEDICINE–green MUSIC–pink NURSING–apricot PHARMACY–olive green PHILOSOPHY–dark blue PHYSICAL EDUCATION–sage green PUBLIC HEALTH–salmon pink PUBLIC ADMIN.–peacock blue SOCIAL SCIENCE–citron THEOLOGY–scarlet

2014-15 PHOENIX COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS MILESTONES • Phoenix College celebrated the grand re-opening of Bulpitt Auditorium with a special showcase event melding historic preservation with cuttingedge technology and cosmetic modernization in September 2014. After 75 years of serving faculty, staff, students, and the entire Valley metro community, the space was deserving of refurbishment and renewal. Upgrades include safety and energy efficiency elements, restoration of the pipe organ, and cosmetic enhancements such as paint and flooring. Major improvements were also made in the audio-visual area, including impressive video screens and lighting capabilities. The auditorium was originally constructed on the “new” site of Phoenix College in 1939, when the college moved to its 12th Avenue and Thomas location from the campus of Phoenix Union High School, where it was founded in 1920. • James Sousa, residential faculty member in the Mathematics department, was named the 2014 Arizona Professor of the Year. Awarded annually by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Sousa was selected to bring home the top award for Arizona from among 400 top professors across the United States. Phoenix College math students – in addition to students as far away as Namibia – have benefited from Sousa’s outstanding commitment. He has developed thousands of free minilesson math tutorials on topics ranging from arithmetic to calculus. Sousa also spearheaded the effort to launch free, developmental online math courses in the fall of 2013 through the use of massive open online classes or MOOCs. • Phoenix College’s 2015 Innovation of the Year, the MyPC Mobile Application for Students, was selected as the district-wide winner of the Dr. Paul M. From the app, students can find information such as their class schedule, required textbooks, and use GPS to guide them to each of their classes on campus. Students are also able to upload their class schedule to Google Calendars and check their grades and GPA. The free and easy-to-use application has been shared with other colleges across the Maricopa Community Colleges District. • Phoenix College and the Raul H. Castro Institute at Phoenix College (RCI) were saddened by the passing of the Institute’s namesake and inspiration, the Honorable Raul H. The effort to reduce energy consumption by PC is managed by Doug McCarthy, Director of College Facilities, Planning, and Development, with the assistance of Larry Blair and Harold Fox, HVAC maintenance technicians. The proceeds created from PC’s involvement in the program help to fund other sustainable projects on campus through PC Green, the Sustainability Committee for the college. • For the 50th consecutive year, since the program’s inception, Phoenix College’s Dental Assisting Program maintained its accreditation with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
