PCDS Community,
Watching the Class of 2024 cross the Daley Bridge to commence their graduation ceremony, I found myself reflecting on the unusually chaotic four years these students have spent in high school. It began their freshman year with the trials and tribulations of the COVID experience, and it came to a close this May with college campuses—where they’ll all be matriculating in a matter of weeks—in turmoil.
You would think that these young adults would be approaching this next chapter in their lives with trepidation.
However, what stood out to me through that magical evening was much different: our graduates, to a person, exuded an undeniable sense of joy, gratitude, and an enthusiasm about what lies in front of them. They’re ready to roll!
At PCDS, our mission is simple and clear: to do everything in our power to prepare our students to be responsible leaders and lifelong learners. In the pages of this edition of The Bridge, you will hopefully notice a School and community who are driving forward—who are leaning in and making things happen. You will also hopefully notice a deep and strategic commitment to people who are Happy, Healthy, and Hardworking. We believe that Triple H, as we call it, is a wonderful baseline of traits conducive to success in any environment—and highly evident in the smiles on the faces of the Class of 2024.
If life at PCDS is any indication of where our complicated world is headed, I’m firmly in the optimistic camp.
Let’s go, Eagles!

“Being a lifer at PCDS was an incredibly special experience. Growing up around the same classmates and teachers made PCDS feel like a second home. I wouldn’t give up the 14-year-long bond I’ve been able to form with my classmates and teachers for the world. I will truly miss PCDS, but the memories I’ve made will stay with me forever.”

Our Commitment to Happy, Healthy, Hardworking
by Assistant Head of School Roz Abero ’89
Since its founding, PCDS has sought to foster an environment that brings out the best in each of its students and staff. Our School’s most recent Strategic Plan addresses a broad spectrum of institutional priorities, encompassing academics, infrastructure, and financial health. Yet, no institutional element is more fundamental than culture.
In its latest Strategic Plan, PCDS has emphasized the cultural cornerstone of a “Happy, Healthy, and Hardworking” community. This guiding principle, first articulated in the 2020 Strategic Plan, was reaffirmed and given precedence in the Strategic Plan’s post-COVID refresh in 2023.
Embracing a Happy, Healthy, Hardworking Community
PCDS firmly believes that the essence of our community lies in the dedication to fostering happiness, health, and a strong work ethic among all its members. This commitment influences every aspect of School life, guiding the recruitment of employees, the selection and support of students, and engagement with families. In fact, each year during the employee contract renewal period, PCDS faculty and staff are reminded of their vital role in upholding these core values—a reminder that serves as both a celebration of the past year’s achievements and a pledge for the future.
From the classroom to the stage to sports fields, from staff meetings to parent-teacher conferences, the principles of happiness, health, and hard work are woven into the fabric of the School community. This holistic approach not only enhances academic and professional outcomes, but also enriches the personal growth of every individual involved.
How are these values defined?
Happy
• Having an optimistic outlook, a smile on your face, and an eagerness to engage in a joyful manner with those around you.
Healthy
• Taking care of our bodies and minds.
• Offering a balanced and diverse curriculum and set of experiences; encouraging students to explore different perspectives objectively and fairly; striving to find common ground, especially among diverging opinions.
• Interacting with others professionally and in an ageappropriate fashion.
Hardworking
• Dedication, hard work, and high standards for all.
• Working consistently to exceed expectations, which fosters growth and instills a sense of pride for students and staff alike.
A Proud Tradition of Excellence
PCDS takes immense pride in its community and culture, which sets the tone for all its endeavors. This culture of being happy, healthy, and hardworking is more than just a strategic pillar; it is the very foundation upon which the School stands, ensuring that PCDS remains a place where students, staff, and families can thrive and be their fullest and best selves each day. n
Never Stop Growing
Faculty Growth & Renewal and Evaluation
A key pillar of our Strategic Plan highlights the importance of professional development:
“Much as our teachers ask our students to seek growth, we encourage our teachers to seek growth of their own. To support these endeavors, we offer dynamic professional development opportunities and will add to that a plan for the observation and formal evaluation of all faculty members on campus.” Now, after years of research, collaboration, and hard work, this professional growth plan has come to life.
The Faculty Growth & Renewal team is spearheaded by LS teacher Kelli Newsome and US Dean of Faculty Mark Bistricky, in collaboration with TAG (Teaching Advocacy Group). This multi-year, multifaceted plan will allow our outstanding faculty and staff to reach new heights through:
• tracking professional growth towards goals
• self-reflection
• collaboration
• classroom observation by peers, department chairs, and supervisors
• using Folio software to facilitate the process
• annual faculty evaluation conducted by Division Heads
“Prior to PCDS, being observed never felt purposeful. What I like about this Growth & Renewal process is that it’s tied to meaningful goals that I care about for my growth and the growth of the students.”
Lisa Lieppert, 2nd grade teacher
Professional Growth & Renewal Framework: Developed by faculty, for faculty
The newly-implemented Faculty Professional Growth & Renewal Framework supports faculty through a dynamic three-year cycle. In each phase of the cycle, faculty members consider best practices and receive constructive feedback in ways that support their teaching, boost student learning, and reinforce their professional satisfaction.
Faculty Evaluation
In addition to fostering a collaborative system of self-reflection and peer feedback, each faculty member will be reviewed by their respective Division Head each year, ensuring that 13 Essential Expectations are met and that faculty are making progress through the Growth & Renewal framework.
The development for these new frameworks for feedback is a testament to the spirit of lifelong learning and excellence celebrated by PCDS’s outstanding faculty. n

FIFTH ANNUAL TALLEY SOCIETY STATE OF THE SCHOOL BREAKFAST
This past April, PCDS welcomed a record number of members of the Honorable Mae Sue Talley Society to the fifth annual State of the School breakfast. The Talley Society is comprised of donors whose cumulative lifetime giving to PCDS is $25,000 or more and includes current and past parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends of the School.
In its traditional event location—a tent on Founders’ Lawn— over 100 members gathered for a breakfast featuring welcome remarks by Board of Trustees President Martin Felli and Head of School Andy Rodin, both of whom spoke to specific health measures and highlights of the School. In Mr. Felli’s remarks, he reported that the Board had recently approved the construction of a $24 million, 600-seat performing arts
center scheduled to open in early 2026. (More information to come on that soon.)
As the breakfast continued, Director of Arts Keith Burns facilitated a conversation with our stellar performing arts faculty—Nathan Botts, Carla Cose-Giallella, Stevie Ray Dallimore, Maurine Fleming, and Kara Harris—who spoke with passion about their students, their craft, and the positive impact that new facilities will have on their programs. Last, but certainly not least, a sampling of our impressive seniors spoke about what has made PCDS special for them as they prepare to head off to their chosen universities, including UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Michigan, Cal Poly, the Air Force Academy, and Georgetown University. n
Decades and Generations
Cindy Davis Retires After 40 Years
by Kristen Brook ’95 P’33
The extraordinary impact of a dedicated teacher is something that remains long after the final school bell rings. For generations of alumni, that special person is none other than beloved PCDS second grade teacher Cindy Davis, who has devoted her life to nurturing the minds and hearts of countless young students. I write as both an alumna and parent to celebrate Ms. Davis on the occasion of her wellearned retirement after 40 years of loving service.
Flashback to four decades ago: I was a new kid at PCDS, nervous, timid, and barely able to read. It was Ms. Davis who welcomed me into her vibrant classroom, embracing my quirks. She looked past my anxieties, fostered my self-belief, and embarked on the grand adventure of teaching me to read. It wasn’t just about letters and sentences; it was about kindling a love for the written word that still burns brightly within me today.
Fast-forward to a few years ago when my daughter, Dylan, had the privilege of stepping into the same 2nd grade classroom I once did. She, too, was lucky enough to experience the magic of Ms. Davis. There was something beautifully full circle about
“We are immensely grateful for the profound influence she’s had on two generations of my family.”
the woman who guided my early learning now teaching my daughter with the same dedication and joy. Dylan felt as special in her eyes as I had, and hundreds of other students have over the years, enthused by the warm and dynamic learning environment that is quintessentially Ms. Davis.
Over her four decades of passionate teaching, Ms. Davis has been an irreplaceable part of PCDS. She has managed to seamlessly weave together fun and learning, showing us the excitement in knowledge and instilling a lifelong curiosity and love of education in our hearts. Ms. Davis devoted herself entirely to her classroom, and her warm, nurturing spirit will be profoundly missed.
As Ms. Davis embarks on her well-deserved retirement, we find ourselves at a bittersweet juncture. We are immensely grateful for her dedicated service and the profound influence she had on two generations of my family. The truth remains: Cindy Davis did not just teach; she inspired, loved, and cherished every student she ever taught, leaving a lasting imprint that transcends the confines of the classroom.
Congratulations and thank you, Ms. Davis, for making us all feel special in our own beautiful ways. n
Counting Down
Liz Olson Retires After 33 Years
by Katie McKean, MS History Teacher
Liz Olson Retires! What a headline! I would imagine few people can think of PCDS without Liz Olson being in the picture. Throughout her 33 years at PCDS, she has taken on the roles of educator, Head of MS, team leader, stage manager, TAG member, scheduler, and member of countless committees and School improvement teams. What’s more, she has embraced the personal roles of confidant, friend, handyperson, tutor, mentor, storyteller, wife, golfer, comedian, and sidekick. I alone can also claim Liz as my neighbor (through a retractable wall) for over 15 years and friend/colleague for 23 years.
Math. Fun math. Understandable math. Teaching math. Explaining math. After all is said and done, math, especially algebra, is Liz Olson’s passion. Not many people can say they’ve lived their life fulfilling their passion, and how lucky for us that Liz did. For almost her whole career she has spent her free time helping 7th grade students, always with calm and patience. She created her own curriculum and set her students up for success. And she did the same for me as a teacher, as she has been an incredible mentor. For 23 years,
she has advised me, brainstormed with me, and guided me as I learned to understand the MS student’s brain. I did not master algebra, but I did master teaching because of Liz Olson.
Perhaps Liz was your Algebra teacher, and you remember Barbies hanging from the ceiling and countless retakes until you learned a particular skill. Or maybe Liz was your child’s teacher, and you had compassionate conversations with her regarding the pre-teen brain and its ability to problem-solve. Perhaps you are reading this as a co-worker, and your memories include her generosity of time and sage advice, both complemented by humor and tales of yore. And anyone who has known Liz knows of her uncompromising loyalty to the growth and academic excellence of our School. Regardless of why you are reading, surely you can feel the space that seems impossible to fill with the retirement of Liz Olson.
And so it is with the utmost respect, love, camaraderie, and honor that I have the privilege to share these thoughts and end with the wish that Liz Olson will now feel many Minnesota breezes, rescue countless dogs, and travel on to new adventures with her wife Jenny Treadway—but always find her way back to us at Phoenix Country Day School. n
“I did not master algebra, but I did master teaching because of Liz Olson.”

A Rising Star in High School Musical Theater
Congratulations to Nora Palermo ’24
Nora Palermo ’24 has made waves in the high school musical theater scene, winning the prestigious Best Female Lead award at the ASU Gammage High School Musical Theater Awards this past May. Her standout performance as the witch in PCDS’s production of Into the Woods captivated audiences and judges alike, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft. This statewide accolade is a testament to Nora’s lifelong passion for the performing arts, marking a significant milestone in her burgeoning career.
As a result of Nora’s recognition as Arizona’s Best Female Lead, Nora was invited to take her talents to the national stage by participating in the Jimmy Awards on Broadway in New York City in June. The Jimmy Awards, officially known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, are the most highly anticipated event in the world of high school musical theater.
The 15th annual Jimmy Awards took place on June 24, 2024, at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre. Featuring nominees from over 50 regions, the ceremony showcases the incredible diversity and skill of young performers. Since its inception, the program has seen participation from more than 900 nominees, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in theater and beyond.
Nora’s participation in the Jimmy Awards was not just a personal triumph, but also a source of immense pride for the entire PCDS community. Her journey from the PCDS stage to the ASU Gammage stage to Broadway is a remarkable achievement that underscores the importance of nurturing young talent and providing platforms for them to shine.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Nora Palermo for her well-deserved recognition. n
“ Nora made me feel so proud of her and of the PCDS performing arts programs. Watching her perform with the best young talent in the country at the Jimmy Awards on Broadway was a highlight of my career!”
Keith Burns, Director of Arts
Spring Musical: Into the Woods
by Maddie Angst, ’24
Our spring musical, Into the Woods , written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, is a magical dark comedy full of twists and turns. The story follows a childless baker (Harrison Whitfill ’24) and his wife (Maddie Angst ’24) who must break a witch’s (Nora Palermo, ’24) curse by retrieving items in the woods from various fairytale characters: Cinderella (Gracie Smith, ’26), Jack and the Beanstalk (Jason Lin, ’24), and Little Red Riding Hood (Petra Danek, ’26).
Into the Woods is more than a childhood fairytale. It takes these fables and intertwines them to create complex characters with morally gray compasses and desires. After an angry giant comes down from the sky and ruins the “happy ending” found in Act I, the darkness of the show starts to reveal its face. We see how each character navigates grief and how they learn that making mistakes is okay.
Cast and crew, front row: River Libhart ’30, Harper Alt ’24, Saturn Klein ’26, Petra Danek ’26, Gracie Smith ’26, Nora Palermo ’24, Harrison Whitfill ’24, Maddie Angst ’24, Jason Lin ’24, Madalyn Paltzik ’27, Mirella Mateo ’27, Maia Urumova ’26. Back row: Isabelle Tilman ’24, Zayna Khan ’27, Sophia Lawton ’27, Lili Chaidez ’27, Kathryn Barakat ’26, Bijan Atri ’24, Baasen Felli ’24, Rachel Caplan ’26, Ashlann Fee ’24, Colin Reynolds, Ellie Robinson ’25, Megan Eckerman ’25, Lily Gentry ’25, Shirin Schadiu ’27, Angel Gutierrez ’27
Sondheim’s music is notorious for difficult harmonies and overlapping lyrics. We had rehearsals where we would repeat the same measures for a couple of minutes so we could get every line on beat. My personal favorite was, “When you know your wish, if you want your wish, you can have your wish, but you can’t just wish, no, to get your wish, you go into the woods!” (Sondheim and Lapine 1987) But learning the lyrics alongside Mrs. Kara Harris and Dr. Nathan Botts made the entire process something that I could never forget. The Act I and Act II finales were truly brought to life by Ms. Elizabeth Broeder’s wonderful choreography, too.
Our fantastic director, Mr. Keith Burns, was also key to the success of our production. He helped us talk about the motivations and dynamics of our characters and the intentions behind the lines. Mr. Burns made us think about what the show was saying to the audience and its actors. Into the Woods teaches us how wishes must be pursued thoughtfully, how no one is alone, and how the gray area of morality is okay.
I am beyond lucky to have been able to be part of this production of Into the Woods my senior year. It was a wonderful mix of comedy, tragedy, and a sweet message to end it all. Everyone involved in this show reminded me every day why I love live theater so much, and I want to thank everyone who was a part of it. n

Speech & Debate Results
Team results for the spring of 2024
by Brittany Stanchik, Director of US and MS Speech & Debate
Locally
The US Speech & Debate team continued last year’s legacy of underclassmen excellence as freshman and sophomores were responsible for more than 60% of our state tournament advancements. PCDS had a finalist at every tournament this year from the Arizona circuit to the national level. And on a national level, our success in various events only increased. PCDS had our first national tournament champion (Sanya Somani ’24) at the Bronx in Informative Speaking.
On the debate side of events, PCDS finished the first semester with the top Congressional Debate squad in the nation and never fell out of the two 3 rankings the entire season, reigning in almost 30 total Tournament of Champion bids combined and qualifying 6 Congressional Debaters to the same tournament. PCDS is home to 4 Academic All American recipients and ends the season with a Congressional Debate NSDA National Finalist (Ria Mehta ’24).
Middle School
• For the first time PCDS captured the top 3 spots in an event—Winter Cup, Impromptu Speaking (Neriah Safir ’29 in 1st, Rakeb Gebresillasie ’29 in 2nd, and Owen Engilman ’29 in 3rd).
• PCDS ended the season with 4 state finalists in Congressional Debate (Sameer Khan ’24, Benjamin Paltzik ’29, and Michael Murphy ’27 in 2 tournaments).
Nationally
• For the first time in almost 6 years, a PCDS MS student (Adhiynath Ram ’28) attended—and cleared—at the Tournament of Champions.
• Since before the pandemic, PCDS MS offered Public Forum Debate—not offered at local MS tournaments— so students could compete nationally.
• PCDS ended the summer with 2 NSDA National semifinalists (Adhiyanth Ram ’29, Congressional Debate, and Neriah Safir ’29, Humorous Interpretation).
The PCDS Middle School program continued to grow— both on and off campus—with the Speech & Debate elective returning after almost 5 years. Students competed at 9 tournaments this season (only 7 are offered in person, some of our students bravely competed online for national experience).

MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear Eagle Alumni,
When I joined the PCDS Alumni Board nine years ago, I had no idea how important an engaged alumni community was for the health of a school. Our alumni body was already strong, but I knew that together we could look forward and make an even stronger impact on PCDS. Alumni IMPACT built on the strong foundation of growth, established by our 2024 Alum of the Year Augustine Gomez ’99, and encouraged our alumni to engage, connect and give back to their alma mater. I am proud to say that our alumni were up for the challenge. During my tenure as Alumni Board President, we welcomed alumni back to campus for hugely successful Blue & Gold Days and Alumni Reunion Weekends, and saw record numbers at our annual alumni holiday parties. Outside of Phoenix, I was thrilled to travel the country to connect with our alums from New York to Los Angeles. Even during our years of virtual events during COVID, we had great support and participation from our alumni body. Our networking platform, PCDS:Connect, continues to grow, and our Alumni Internship Program will keep expanding to further connect college alumni with older PCDS graduates and community members in their fields of interest. Our alumni also rose to the challenge and have raised a record amount of money for the Alumni Scholarship Fund, even during a pandemic when our students’ needs were the greatest. I have been honored to play a small part in the continued growth of our Alumni Association, and as my Board tenure comes to a close, I’m delighted to leave the Board in amazing hands with Courtney McConnell ’06, our new President. Go Eagles!
Tiffany Westlie Pondelik ’00 Outgoing Alumni Board President
“ Tiffany—I could not be more grateful for your leadership, energy, vision, friendship, and commitment over the last nine years. Thank you for all that you have done for our alma mater. You are second to none.”
Leslie Kornreich Feldman ’99, Director of Alumni Relations
Alumni—as a nod to the School’s emphasis on sustainability, please use this QR code if you would like to opt-out of printed issues of The Bridge magazine moving forward. Instead, by completing the survey you will receive an email link to the online ISSUU version of The Bridge
Spring 2024 Alumni Events
We loved seeing so many of you this past spring. Here are some highlights:
• In February, we hosted our annual Alumni Masters’ Lecture featuring retired Science teacher Mr. Mike Swingler. We learned a lot about the wild lives of Renaissance astronomers and laughed more than we recall doing in Mr. Swingler’s Physics classes in US! It was a true joy to be back in the classroom with our beloved teacher.
• In March, we reunited with our Southern California alumni after four long years. Attendees enjoyed a rousing cocktail reception in Los Angeles.
• In April, Alumni Spring Weekend boasted a full schedule of events including the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Luncheon, a welcome cocktail reception, Athletic Hall of Fame Induction, alumni campus tours, and class reunions at the all-School Bridge-the-Gap celebration.

2024 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year
Augustine Gomez ’99
Iam humbled and grateful to be named the 2024 PCDS Outstanding Alumnus of the Year. From my deepest core, thank you PCDS and all involved. This award only adds to the countless blessings in my life that I attribute to PCDS.
As a full financial aid student in high school, to being the first in my family to attend and graduate college, PCDS has shaped my life in unimaginable ways. I walked on to campus as a Project Excellence summer scholar over 30 years ago.
Since that first day of Project Excellence until today, PCDS and I have been inextricably linked. The irony is, if one had interviewed my entire class on graduation night in 1999, I am certain that I would not have been at the top of the list of those likely to stay close to PCDS, to be most impacted by PCDS, and certainly not most likely to receive the Outstanding Alum of the Year honor. Yet 25 years later, it’s safe to say my bond with the School is unbreakable. Friendships, career, exposure to philanthropy and the zeal to pay it forward; PCDS has played some part in it all.
In my career journey, from my first internship, to my first job out of college, to launching my first company, to my position today, the PCDS ecosystem and sphere of influence was ever-present. Even today as Principal Partner & CEO of Vaulter, a regional real estate investment firm based in Scottsdale, my partner and founder of the firm, Ron McRae, was a PCDS parent.
“For nearly 40 years, Project Excellence has been a beacon of light in the community and I feel so privileged that once again, with this award, the program shines.”
Augustine Gomez ’99 (right) with Head of School Andy Rodin
I have viewed all friendships in adulthood through the lens of my lifelong PCDS friendships. Relationships formed and maintained since high school have served as a litmus test for any new friendships. I never would have imagined that those friendships would not only last nearly 30 years, but looking ahead, are most certain to last another 30 years. Very few environments in life lend themselves to forming those kinds of bonds, but PCDS is one of them.
Serving on the PCDS Alumni Board for over 10 years, 6 years as Board President, was a highlight of my adult life. Even then, the Board’s three major objectives during my tenure as President largely stemmed from my personal experience: Alumni Engagement (my 30-year friendships), PCDS:Connect (Career Networking), and PCDS IMPACT (alumni fundraising for financial aid scholarships). My ability to give back to an institution that has given so much to me was and continues to be an honor and pleasure.
Finally, as a parent of two young children who is fortunate to be raising them in Phoenix, I hope to expose my children to the same incredible institution that shaped me. I’m excited to see what the future holds for them as Eagle hopefuls. Ideally, they will maintain the PCDS tradition. In the meantime, I intend to carry the mantle of this award with pride and grace, in a manner that reflects adoration and honor back on to PCDS. From the bottom of my heart, thank you again for this award.

2024 Athletic Hall of Fame
This past spring, we welcomed two individuals and two teams into our Hall of Fame.
The Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding alumni athletes and coaches who excelled during their time at PCDS. The annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction solidifies a sense of pride and tradition for our School and our Eagle athletics community.

JENNIFER LEWKOWITZ ABELSON ’04
Jennifer Lewkowitz Abelson was one of the Eagles’ most decorated female swimmers of all time. She was named the Most Valuable Female Swimmer three of her four US years. She notably holds the distinction of All American in the 100-yard Butterfly. After graduating from PCDS, Jennifer went on to Amherst College where she excelled in swimming and was named to the All American Academic Swim Team along with being selected for the All New England Swim Team. Phoenix Country Day School is a family affair for the Lewkowitz-Abelson family as Jennifer and her husband, Ben, have three Eagles of their own who attend PCDS.
ARIELLA NEVILLE ’99
Ariella Neville was one of the finest tennis players in PCDS history. She helped lead the Eagle tennis team to a State Championship and two State Runner-Up finishes. In 1998 and 1999, she was voted the Eagles Tennis Most Valuable Player while winning two Metro Region Singles Championships and two State Singles Championships. Her tenacity for playing the game and will to win set an enduring example for how the game was to be played. After graduation, Ariella went on to play at Middlebury College in both singles and doubles. Her leadership and play at Middlebury was instrumental in transitioning the sport of tennis at her college. Ariella is now enjoying life in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Senior Dinner
Welcome Class of 2024
Each year, the PCDS Alumni Association hosts the Senior Dinner where the soon-to-be graduates are officially inducted into the Alumni Association. This year’s event featured a lovely meal, a rousing alumni trivia game, special alumni gifts, and provided one final opportunity for the seniors to come together before graduation. Special thanks to the members of the Alumni Board who attended in order to personally congratulate the 73 members of this year’s graduating class as they joined the fold.
Are you interested in welcoming our newest alumni to your city this fall? They are all registered on the PCDS:Connect platform. Please connect with them at pcdsconnect.org.
Golden Circle 2024
Inducting the Class of 1974
We were thrilled to induct the Class of 1974 into the PCDS Golden Circle in June. Graduates from the classes of 1965 through 1974 enjoyed a cocktail reception and State of the School address from Head of School Andy Rodin before leading the procession of the Class of 2024 at US Graduation.
The PCDS Golden Circle is an honorary group of all classes that have celebrated their 50th reunions. Each year on US Graduation day, the members of the Golden Circle wear gold robes and cross the Daley Bridge, leading that year’s newest alums to their graduation. During the ceremony, Golden Circle members receive special recognition and an open invitation to return each year to welcome new inductees and to march during commencement, reminding our current families and all others in attendance that PCDS enjoys a vibrant history.
Class of 1975—please mark your calendars for Thursday, May 29, 2025, when we welcome you into this illustrious group.
Here’s what some of our alumni have been up to…
1992
Upon completion of his degree at the University of California, Riverside, Commander (CDR) Randy Saria obtained a position with the Indian Health Service (IHS) at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center (PIMC) under the Joslin Vision Network (JVN). This new telehealth program brought innovative diabetic retinal imaging to remote native clinics to provide clinical diagnosis for diabetic retinopathy. He began as a lead imager and imager trainer in 2001. In 2006, he completed his MBA through the University of Phoenix. He was commissioned into the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) and became Director of Operations for the JVN Program. As Operations Director, he was accountable for over 90 telehealth sites IHS-wide and assisted in developing a structured reimbursement platform for facilities nationwide. In 2013, CDR
Saria transferred to Anchorage, AK, as the Western Region Commissioned Corps Liaison, where he provided assistance and guidance to 400+ officers in the Alaska, Portland, and California areas. In May 2015, CDR Saria returned to PIMC as Field Operations and Telehealth Coordinator in his position of record. Since December 2019, he has served several details at PIMC, including Deputy Practice Manager for the Emergency Department, Logistics Officer for the Pharmacy COVID Vaccination Clinic, and his current position as Health Systems Specialist for the Primary Care Medicine Clinic. CDR Saria has responded to multiple disasters, including Hurricanes Ike/ Gustav (2008), Sandy (2012), and most recently, Maria (2017), which took him to Puerto Rico for 30 days. He has been a front-line worker responding to the Ebola (2014) and Corona (2019) virus outbreaks. For his service, CDR Saria has earned the PHS Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, two Hazardous Duty Awards, three Crisis Response Service Awards, COVID-19 Pandemic Campaign Medal, and the Armed Forces Humanitarian Service Medal. CDR Saria is only the second member in his native family to complete college and the first to obtain a graduate degree. He takes pride in his Native American background, being one-half Hopi, and loves to spend his free time with his 12-year-old son, Luke, and 9-year-old daughter, Cassidy.
attended Tufts University where he studied political science and music. Degree in hand, Gregg relocated to San Francisco in 1996, and he’s resided in the Bay Area ever since. Professionally, Gregg joined the emerging wave of the commercial internet in early Web 1.0 days with a focus on engineering management and web development among growing consumer software companies. For the last 12 years, Gregg has served as a recognized product and technology leader within large, global-scale companies like Meta and Rakuten, with specific focus toward e-commerce and data privacy. Still an active musician (kudos to the PCDS Music Department), Gregg performs regularly throughout the Bay Area. Gregg presently resides in San Rafael, CA, with his wife and two daughters. He remains grateful for his amazing PCDS experience (2nd-12th grade), and welcomes fellow Eagles to get in touch if they plan to visit the Bay Area.
We collect many Class Notes each year and cannot guarantee that all submissions will be printed. Class Notes are written in an individual’s own words. These alumni are registered members of the PCDS Alumni Networking Platform. Connect with PCDS alumni around the globe at pcdsconnect.org.
Greg Fraser lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two kids. He shares, “I went to Tufts and Wharton (shared a cohort with Adam Spiegel ’92!); meandered a path through marketing, product, and startups; and recently voyaged a midlife transition to executive coaching. Now I love biking, concert-going, making family photo books (old school!), and chasing ‘AZ-worthy’ sunsets. I help people identify their true goals and root challenges, confront limiting assumptions, and live and work with more fulfillment and authenticity. We were all so fortunate to experience PCDS! I’d love to connect.”
Nadia Lancy graduated from Vassar College with a BA in history in 1996. After a stint teaching English as a Foreign Language in Argentina, Nadia studied journalism at ASU. In 2000, she took an entry level job at CNN in Atlanta and has been there ever since. She’s now in a senior editorial role at CNN and vets all types of content, including documentaries and longform investigative pieces. After 24 years in Atlanta, she’s ready to make the move to D.C. to join her husband Jim Proeller. The two married in 2018. She is smom (stepmom) to the most amazing daughter, Lois, now 17, and has two very furry cats. If anyone has any leads on journalism roles in the D.C. area, please reach out.
Sean Nolan graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1996 with a degree in accounting. In college, Sean was a member of the swimming and golf teams, but he shared that the highlight of his time at Franklin & Marshall was meeting his future wife, Adrienne. After college, Sean embarked on a career in healthcare management starting in Maryland, followed by stops in California, Pennsylvania (where he obtained his MBA/MHA from the University of Pittsburgh), New Jersey, North Carolina, and now Delaware. Sean and Adrienne have been in Wilmington for the past seven years with their family which includes two daughters—Corinne, who will be entering her senior year of high school and is committed to study and play lacrosse at the United States Military Academy, and Tessa, who will be entering the 9th grade. When they are not on a sideline (and they are on a lot of sidelines) they are usually outdoors exploring.

Lindsay Schmid Alexander lives in Fairfield, CT, with her husband, Nick, two daughters and their rescue puppy. After graduating from PCDS, she attended Northwestern University, and then moved to New York City on a recommendation that “you’ll never regret living there, but you might regret not living there!” She and Nick
were introduced by Phoenix-based family friends and were married in 2008. After 20 years of working for consumer and retail companies, including beauty, last year Lindsay became a talent advisor and recruiter to those industries. She and her family love getting together with younger brother David Schmid ’97 and his family, based in Minneapolis, as much as possible. Both have fond memories of their high school experiences and friends at PCDS.
After graduating from Harvard with a CS degree, Mikhail Ulinich moved to Silicon Valley to take a job with AltaVista. More recently, he helped start Ipsy where he ran the engineering team for almost 10 years. Less than a year ago, he co-founded a software company that helps large e-commerce brands with their shipping operations. Mikhails tell us, “outside of work, I got back into hockey after college and have been playing multiple times a week ever since. One of my kids, a high school sophomore next year, also started playing a few years ago, and I’ve been helping coach his teams. My other kid somehow ended up being a competitive fencer. He just turned 18 (how did that happen?) and is off to Berkeley next year. My wife and I are looking forward to not thinking or talking about college apps for the next couple of years. I’d love to reconnect with former classmates, so let me know if you live in or will be visiting the Bay Area and want to reconnect.”
1997
Since graduating from PCDS in 1997, Katie Lyon attended UCLA/UCSD, passed the California Bar exam, and worked for both the California State Legislature and on the Hill. Katie lives in the Dupont neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and currently works in political compliance. She loves traveling—including road trips along the eastern seaboard with the dog…and cat!—visiting the region’s wineries, and living an active lifestyle.

After 10+ years at Capital One, Zack has jumped into entrepreneurship and founded Digital Craft Consulting. He loves helping small businesses use technology to grow and become more efficient. He’s always looking for new companies he can assist. Let him know if you are ever in the D.C. area.

Sarah Hurwitz shares, “I went to University of Colorado Boulder, where I graduated with a degree in clay and paint. Post college, I applied and got into a graduate program at the University of Arizona. I went there and pretended to be Stevie Nicks, having deep late-night discussions over coffee or whiskey, while using words like “Greenbergian” and “provincial.” After this I moved to LA with the hopes of becoming a famous, cool, hot, young artist under 30. I succeeded in becoming a Spanish tutor, a house cleaner, a dog walker and dating d-list comedians who went on to become famous millionaires. In defeat, I moved back to Phoenix and in with my brother. I got a cool job where I made interactive installations for public libraries across North America. Now I freelance from home doing illustration and public art installations. Somewhere in there I went on a date with my now husband and we have two kids.

A high-risk pregnancy doctor at Brown University, Adam Lewkowitz reports, “Most of my job is focused on perinatal digital health research, which means my hard-earned PCDS skills of critical thinking and analytic writing are put to good use. My family has loved exploring all of Rhode Island’s seasons the last five years. In the photo above, we are having fresh apple cider donuts right after I finished the Newport Half Marathon.

After college (Colorado College ’07), law school (USC Law ’11), and a master’s in taxation (NYU Law ’12), Joe Volk has practiced U.S. tax law in Los Angeles, Toronto, and San Francisco, focusing on cross-border and domestic mergers and acquisitions. He leads the tax insurance advisory practice at Leo Berwick, a tax consulting firm. Tara Wieger McCracken is currently living in Gilbert with her wife, Jen, and their son who is 13. “In our free time, we enjoy staying active, paddleboarding, hiking, and adventuring outdoors together as a family. And, though my body does not move quite like it used to, I still play a bit of soccer in a nearby adult league. You will also find us rooting for the Buffalo Bills every Sunday during football season—go Bills! After being a teacher for 12 years, I decided to pursue my dream of nursing and go back to school. I graduated in May 2023 and am currently an RN at a detox and recovery center in Chandler. This area of nursing is extremely rewarding, as recovery is very close to my heart. Last summer when we went back to NY to visit my wife’s family, I was able to visit with Liz Dann (above right), our 9th grade Biology teacher at PCDS who had an incredibly positive impact on my life. We have stayed connected for all these years and it was so good to see her in person.”
Elizabeth Dias published her first book, The Fall of Roe: The Rise of a New America, in June. She is the national religion correspondent for The New York Times , where she reports on faith, culture and politics across the country. Her book, written with co-author Lisa Lerer and published by Flatiron, combines investigative reporting and intimate stories to reveal the untold story of how a right that was fundamental to women for half a century disappeared. She lives in Washington, D.C.
2005
John Kester reports: “I recently started working at Walmart on their ESG and Sustainability teams supporting annual reporting efforts and GHG emissions strategy. I’m living in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and I continue to get back to Arizona to visit my parents and participate in PCDS alumni efforts including the recent Gathering Humanity event in January.”

I’m hoping to travel back to Arizona for an alumni event in the near future.”
Jennifer Papp Weyland continues to work in the motorsport industry at MagCanica (an engineering company that manufactures torque sensors). Jenny became the director of operations earlier this year before passing her 10-year mark at the company. She has spent considerable time over the last year providing in-field track
support to Formula 1 and endurance racing customers at race tracks in Japan, Italy, Belgium, and France. Jenny continues to live in Pacific Beach in San Diego with her husband and dog, where they enjoy taking their boat for a spin around the bay and hanging out by the beach.

Andrew Opila is a graduate of Gonzaga University who currently travels the globe as a self-employed photographer and expedition filmmaker; telling stories in wild places. In 2023, he visited six continents, photographing from the wild bush of South Africa to pristine glaciers of Antarctica, with a few stops in Europe along the way. He lives in a log cabin at 8,000ft overlooking Park City, UT, and is enjoying the mountain lifestyle of skiing, mountain biking and climbing with friends.
After being laid off at the start of the pandemic, smack dab in the middle of a whole house remodel and with a very pregnant wife, Tyler Tse decided to take advantage of unemployment and dive head first into his remodel. “I had a few years of experience from previous jobs but had never managed a project of this scope. It was an eye opening experience, working through the intricacies of what makes our modern living structures possible. I took some advice from my dad and decided to start Tse Construction in 2022 (very original naming convention). Since then I’ve added another kid and have been juggling a new business, family, and my sanity ever since. Living the dream one nightmare at a time.”

She currently works at The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation facilitating philanthropic giving to communitybased organizations in the health sector, along with workforce and economic development and criminal justice reform. Maude attained her 200-hour registered yoga teacher certification in May 2023. Her passion as a yoga teacher lies in creating space for those struggling with substance use disorder to reconnect with their bodies and overcome obsessive and intrusive patterns in the mind. She also teaches at Biltmore Hot Yoga in Phoenix—pay her a visit! When not teaching or practicing yoga, Maude loves taking long walks with Carrie, exploring new restaurants, and volunteering her time at local organizations like Sonoran Prevention Works and Planned Parenthood Arizona.

After wrapping work on that, he immediately packed up his entire life and moved to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, to start as a mechatronics engineer at Andromeda Robotics. He will be designing assistive robots, and shares, “I am really looking forward to hiking amongst the kangaroos, eating meat pies, and heading up the coast to dive the Great Barrier Reef. It’s not where I ever expected life to take me, but I’m beyond excited to embrace it.”

In addition to school, Shannon has spent the last year conducting assessments at a pediatric neuropsychological clinic and supporting other doctoral students as a teaching assistant. She will begin two new roles in the fall—one offering therapy to adolescents and another working as a graduate assistant in teaching for her doctoral program. She was selected as the sole recipient of the latter out of all the students in her program. Shannon has begun her dissertation and notes that her teaching experiences inspired her topic. She always misses her PCDS friends and students! On a personal note, Shannon and her partner Steven got engaged this past December and are getting married in March 2025! Two of her PCDS friends, Amelia Montooth ’15 and PJ Noghrehchi ’15 , will be her bridesmaids.

After graduating from Tufts in 2021, Oliver Marsden worked at an engineering consulting firm for two years. Oliver designed the electrical power transmission for off shore wind farms and determined grid impacts/solutions for the interconnection of renewables into the U.S. transmission system. His friends just say “he does wires.” In Washington D.C., he presented to the Department of Energy about seven challenges facing off shore wind transmission that must be addressed to meet the federal goal for 30 GW by 2030. In 2023, Oliver left the consulting firm for Equinor, an off shore wind developer based in Norway. He has visited Norway twice and was mistaken for a local only once. He served as best man for Spencer and Maddie Thompson (both ’17) in their stunning wedding in October 2023. He spends his free time visiting William Porter ’17 (above, left) in Paris, training for the Chicago marathon, and painting geometric shapes onto canvas (because yes, he does have to make everything STEM).

After graduating from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and Archaeology in May 2022, Kylie Fisher transitioned into the graphic design world. “I am currently thriving at a boutique title and escrow agency with a team of designers, working with over 100 statewide clients and premier real estate agents. On top of balancing work and moving back to the Valley, I recently got engaged to my fiancé, Connor, and we are busy planning our wedding (hopefully in June of next year). Since being engaged, we have welcomed an adorable not-so-mini goldendoodle named Benny into our lives. We are excited about creating new roots and building our future together in Scottsdale. I hope to soon be coaching volleyball locally in the Valley and continuing to enjoy all the happiness this new chapter is bringing in the next year!”

The Honorable Mae Sue Talley Society recognizes donors throughout School history whose cumulative giving to PCDS equals $25,000 and above, directed to any area of the School. Mae Sue Talley was the visionary leader who spearheaded the creation of PCDS as the Valley’s premiere independent school in 1961. A prominent Phoenix philanthropist and Arizona leader who passed away in 2017, Mrs. Talley, along with her husband Franz, served among the School’s original founders. The Talley Society recognizes the School’s most supportive donors throughout our history.
