I

graduated from National Taiwan University (NTU) with a bachelor degree in Computer Science and Information Engineering. During my senior year in college, I joined the Image and Vision Lab and worked with Professor Yi-Ping Hung. Through the project I did in that lab, I became interested in design thinking and interface design. While the engineer gives birth to the interface, it is designer who instills the soul into the interface. Thus I decided to make the transition from engineering to design. My background in science lend me a well-developed logic as it helps me to precisely analyze the problem and use my creativity without being impratical. I am fascinated by the way of people’s interaction, and I intend to explore and respond to the potential of human needs, which captures the interdisciplinary nature of design, also captures my heart. Challenging, but interesting.

This was the project that we collaborated with National Palace Museum. ‘Along the River During the Ch’i-ming Festival’ is one of the masterpieces in Chinese culture, and because of its lengthy size: 35.6 x 1152.8 cm, it is not easy for someone to browse. National Palace Museum would like to have an convenient way to exhibit it so that more people could enjoy this exquisite painting.

11

IDEA DEVELOPING We digitized this exquisite painting into an tangible interface in which viewer can appreciate this painting easily and the exhibitor can be relieved from the burden of maintaining a historical treasure. We catagorised the different scenes in the painting into a menu that helps the viewer understand the artwork at a deeper level. The large size and intuitive interaction model make it enjoyable for both children and the elderly.

Interactive Multi-resolution Tabletop (imTop) is a tangible rectly. Different from Microsoft Surface, i-m-Top has two resolutions, with high resolution in center and low resolution in other area.

SYSTEM SCREEN SHOT ON SIMULATOR The right hand image with the hole in the middle is the overall big-picture view. The left hand image is the magnified part of the hole from the right hand image.

1

Initially, the picture would flow slowly on the screen, and there is a blue disc placed at the bottom-right corner. Once the user touches the disc, it would move to the center and expand to five categories.

13

Once a category is chosen, a group of cards (which carries the images and information corresponding to that category) is displayed. The cards could be scaled, rotated, or moved by finger gestures.

2

If the user selects one of the cards, the painting would scroll to the position of that card, and user could flip the card to read what is going on in that spot.

3

The system is now setup in the exhibition room of National Palace Museum, enjoyed by visitors everyday. Learn more about imTop : Video 14

Airport Luggage Service Design We would like to improve the user experience of luggage service in the airport

Travel is a wonderful event, however, throughout our daily conversation we noticed that everyone shared the same complaints about how badly their luggages are treated in the airport. Since airports are often travelers’ first impression of a country, we decided to improve the luggage service in the airport. We use Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport as a case study, hoping to give travelers a good impression of Taiwan as they land in our airport.

Don’t know what to pack... Finally found a cart !

17

DISCOVER First of all, we identified problems primarily through personal interviews and in-depth investigation. During this process, we even contacted the official representatives of Taiwan Taoyuan Airport in order to get more specific details of the current condition in the airport. We also researched other international airports to develop a holistic view on service design.

IDEA DEVELOPING Through personal interviews and investigation, we concluded that the main service gap existed in the transparency of information. Often times, travelers do not know how to access the information that airport authorities provided, we need to engage the travelers more actively. By considering that airport is not the place where most people would visit frequently, delivering information through a physical medium, like a guidebook, which is easily thrown away when leaving the airport, is ineffective. We also want to take care of traveler from the moment he packs to the moment he arrives at the final destination, so the object delivers our service should be something user already uses, or he would have to carry extra things along with his trip.

Thus, with the prevalence of smartphones and the many features smartphones provides, we decide to build our system in the form of smartphone app. The smartphone also enables users to tailor their preference to suit his own need.

The platform that user already uses and interacts with extensively 19

IMPROVEMENT IN SERVICE THAT USES SMARTPHONE AS A PLATFORM By using the location based service (LBS) on mobile phone, our app can automatically download and serve users once they are near the area of the airport. Thus users do not have to search for the information they need on their own.

20

In the airport Before arriving the airport While packaging, we provide a list of what might be needed during the trip, which is collected from those who have the same destination as user. Traveler could also edit his own list for his/her next trip’s reference.

21

The app also has arrival and departure procedure guides, which has step by step instructions for novices or veterans to choose the information he needs.

By entering or scanning the ticket number of the flight, traveler could get the information about his luggage, such as “under security-check”, “already boarding”, ”landing already”, “reclaimed at D after 30 minutes” and so on, even alerting user when something goes wrong.

Leaving the airport The app gathers user’s feedback by providing a questionnaire with a slider interface so user could complete it with minimum effort. It also provides transportation information to travelers.

23

IMPROVEMENT IN INFRASTUCUTRE When observing users in the airport, we found that there is no place for users to settle their luggages. We all have had awkward experience of being asked to open our luggage in public area.

24

Yun-Chia Lin Portfolio Experience Design

We take advantage of the space in front of the check-in counter, which is not planned to have any function. There, we made it a semi-private space for users to re-package their luggage without feeling embarassed.

Outside the space users could also weigh their luggage before checking in to prevent getting fined. 25

Inside this semi-private space users could repackage and re-weigh their luggages. A simple list of items posted on the interior wall will also aid in the repackaging process.

An easy-to-spot logo displayed on the wall also help travelers to recognize the check-in counter of the airlines immediately. 26

Arduino

This is the concept project developed in the 5-day workshop, 2011 OpenHCI. The topic of the workshop is indoor & fun, and we had to use Arduino as our platform.

After the brainstorming session, our team decided to make an exploration in the supermarket.

29

DISCOVER We noticed that in the supermarket most people prefer using shopping cart to shopping basket.

We observed that while pepole were shopping, they may stop at times to read the price tag, find the item they want, or to compare the prices between counterparts. Overall their shopping journey went quite smoothly until the very moment when they got stucked in the checkout line.

People started to feel bored while waiting too long to checkout, especially for little children that parents brought with them, who were usually impatient and had difficult staying at the same place quietly. Parents could not focus on their shopping experience when they are distracted by tending to their children.

30

Yun-Chia Lin Portfolio Experience Design

IDEA DEVELOPING We design an interactive handle, named MusicQ, with LED lights and sounds effects to play rhythm game with users. The shopping cart handle is the place where users touch the most when using a shopping cart. Therfore, we decide to set our device inside the handle. While a tablet on handle may offer many opportunities for interaction, it would be too distracting. So our interactive device will be hidden in the handle.

Create anticipation Every cart represents different kinds of instruments; the user would not be able to know what kind of instruments they get before they checkout. The different instruments also interact with each others to play an orchestra.

31

Create fun There will be LED lights and photo resistors hidden on the handle. LED lights will serve as guidance for users to play simple tune where users are empowered to improvise. Photo resistors are responsible for sensing a user’s touch. The setup is simple enough that even children could play with it immediately..

Minimized interruption

To prevent the user from being too focused on playing game and losing tracking of time, which may annoyed other customers, there is a sensor on the wheel that will turn on the system only when the user enters the waiting area near the checkout counter.

Personal Visual Identity System I chose the last character of my name to represent myself because I have two sisters who share the second character “韻” with me,which made me feel that “嘉” is what really belongs to me. There are two versions :

Lin,Yun Chia phoenixjah@gmail.com 0919 219 805

I took away part the “口” part (which means ‘mouth’ in Chinese) from the “嘉”. I made this modification to indicate that I am not a talktive person . However, it does not mean I have no opnion or I do not stand by my beliefs. Therefore I made this character embossed. Also, I tuned down the white color of the background to represent the serenity as I always behave calmly.

37

ENVELOPE AND LETTER COMBO

I made the envelope white because I want to balance the darker undertone of the other parts. The character on the envelope would be flatten instead of embossed by considering usability issue - an envelope with an embossed surface might interfere with the words written on it. As for the letter, the space for writing is bigger so I keep the character to be embossed, identical with the name card.

38

Yun-Chia Lin Portfolio Graphic Design

In this version, I use the shape and meaning of the character “ 嘉”, which looks similar to another character “喜”, which meaning auspicious in chinese. These two characters together - “嘉 (加) 喜”, is “to bring auspiciousness (to family)”. In this version, the “喜” is shown in red. Traditionally, Chinese wedding ceremonies have this word displayed. In order to differentiate my VI’s look from wedding related themes, I used a darker shade of red.

Photography I’m Home

Home is the most familiar place to everyone. But it feels foreign in our memory as we grow up Maybe because we all are growing apart, busy with school, busy with work, busy with family.. Looking at the empty house, full of memory, but feel like a stranger to it, with solitude flowing in the atmosphere...
