TALE OF TALES
Loosely based on a collection of 17th Century Italian fairytales, the new film from Garrone (Gomorrah) is a deliciously twisted fantasy film for adults. Following a desperate queen (Hayek) who will go to any lengths to get pregnant, a king (Jones) who becomes obsessed with a playful flea, and two ageing sisters who rouse the passions of a local lord; the tales are violent and blackly comic in equal measure with

VERSUS: THE LIFE AND FILMS OF KEN LOACH 12A Fri 1 – Mon 4 Jul Dir: Louise Osmond UK 2016, 1hr 33mins
A timely documentary to celebrate the genius of Ken Loach, acclaimed filmmaker, staunch defender of the NHS, and winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. With clips from his incendiary early work for the BBC like Cathy Come Home, interviews with actors including Cillian Murphy about more recent work, and moving insights into his Loach’s own personal tragedies, it’s a fascinating and revealing study of a man who should be regarded as a national treasure.
Based on the true events of 21 Dec 1970, when Elvis Presley (Shannon) turned up at the White House gates requesting a meeting with President Nixon (Spacey). Elvis thinks America’s war on drugs needs his help and despite being internationally famous he wants to sign up as an undercover agent! As aides attempt to cajole a grumpy Nixon to give up his nap hour, can the king of rock and roll convince the President to give him a job?

Beautiful, free-spirited and resilient, Joy is nevertheless struggling to cope while her brutal, uncaring husband (John Bindon) is in jail. Clutching at any slight chance of happiness, she falls for his associate Dave (Stamp) with heart-breaking results.

Fri 8 – Thu 21 Jul Dir: Rebecca Miller Cast: Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke USA 2015, 1hr 39mins
Struck on the head by a falling object and unable to piece together his past, Londoner Tom uses his huge compensation payment to create elaborate reconstructions of his fragmented memories, including a violent bank heist − all populated by actors at his beck and call. A hypnotic mix of Synecdoche New York and Memento that lingers long in the mind, Remainder is the first feature film from contemporary video artist Omer Fast.
Independent New Yorker Maggie (Gerwig, Frances Ha) is determined to get pregnant and raise a child on her own. Her careful plan is derailed, however, when she meets and falls for married ‘ficto-critical anthropologist’ John (Hawke). A couple of years later John and Maggie are together, with John separated from his wife Georgette (an hilariously icy Julianne Moore). But as Maggie’s love for John starts
to wane she hatches a plan to give him back to his ex! A wonderful comedy of manners.

Mon 4 – Thu 7 Jul Dir: Stefano Sollima Cast: Pierfrancesco Favino Italy/France 2015, 2hrs 15mins, subtitled
An atmospheric, fast-paced thriller following intertwining lives in Rome. Corrupt politician Malgradi is in the middle of a real estate deal to renovate the run-down waterfront, but when a dalliance with a prostitute results in blackmail Malgradi reaches out for help to an organised crime boss, kick-starting a series of violent events. As the fragile peace between Rome’s gangs begins to splinter, politicians, criminals and the Vatican are all drawn towards a bloody conclusion.
Fri 8 – Thu 14 Jul Dir: Kyle Patrick Alvarez Cast: Billy Crudup USA 2015, 1hr 59mins
Based on an infamous real-life experiment at Stanford University in 1971 when 24 college student volunteers were put into a mockedup prison in the basement of the psychology building. With half the boys assigned as guards and the other half prisoners, the experiment rapidly spirals out of control as the guards begin to abuse their position. A chilling exploration of authority and control; the terrific young cast includes Tye Sheridan (Mud) and Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin).

Deciding to flee to the French Riviera, the pair hatch a plan to live the high life forever. For fans of the show (or those just seeking a blissfully daft comedy) this is a summer treat.

Rosi’s powerful award winning documentary is set around life on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, a frontline in the European migrant crisis. Contrasting the ordinary lives of the 6000 islanders − including a 12 year old boy and a local doctor who is often first to treat migrants − with the dangerous journey that the refugees face across the sea in cramped, fragile boats, it’s an important and sobering reminder of the realities of an ongoing crisis.
After the success of Bridge of Spies, Steven Spielberg again teams up with Oscar winner Mark Rylance for this magical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic novel. When young Sophie encounters the 24-foot-tall BFG (Rylance) she is whisked away to an unfamiliar and dangerous land populated by evil giants where her presence puts everyone in danger. Travelling back to London, Sophie and the BFG must team up with
Queen Victoria to stop the maneating giants for good.

This sumptuous costume-drama follows the life of 17th Century monarch Queen Kristina, who at the age of 6 was crowned ruler of Sweden. Raised like a prince with instruction in horse-riding and swordplay, Kristina refused to bow to the demands of her chancellors to marry and provide an heir. Determined to forge her own path living how she wanted, loving who she wanted − most notably her ladyin-waiting Countess Ebba Sparre − Kristin defied conservative Lutheran society.
A bonkers and brilliant slice of twisted European cinema, Men & Chicken mixes the jet-black humour of The Lobster with the slapstick of The Marx Brothers. After their father passes away, oddball brothers Gabriel and Elias discover he wasn’t their biological parent, so they set off to meet their real family on the island of Ork. Finding three siblings who solve any argument through the liberal application of violence, Gabriel begins to unravel a dark secret in their past.

We continue our voyage into the unknown. Since starting our Mystery Film nights last year we’ve shown a huge variety of brilliant cinema, most recently cult indie comedy Clerks screening last month, and Francis Ford Coppola’s taut thriller The Conversation in April. No-one − and we mean, no-one − knows what we’re screening until the film begins, but you can trust that it’ll be great! The mystery film may be any classification up to an 18 certificate. As such, these screenings are for over-18s only.

This hugely entertaining documentary follows disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral campaign in 2013. After he was caught sending suggestive images from his twitter account Weiner resigned from Congress in 2011, but he remained determined to make a comeback. LUCI ELDRIDGE & MEG RAHAIM: FRAMED EXPANSE Fri 10 Jun – Sun 31 Jul Cube Gallery, Free
Framed Expanse is an exhibition of new work exploring the relationship between digital technologies and printmaking, commissioned to coincide with Leicester Print Workshop’s Small Print International. An ongoing fascination with how landscape is represented by digital technologies is what drives the individual practices of Luci Eldridge and Meg Rahaim. Whether rural or urban, peopled or desolate, landscape is now often encountered on-screen through the eyes of drones, web cameras and robotic explorers. However, these views remain partial and immaterial, manipulated, flattened and framed by technologies we do not fully comprehend.
LEARN AT PHOENIX Get deeper into film with one of our short courses; visit our website to find out more and to book online.
Be it a pixelated flourish of cloud algorithmically rendered in the sky above Google Street View or the distant landscape of the planet Mars imaged by NASA’s rovers, landscape as a 360-degree physical experience is reconstructed via these devices, withdrawn into a flat twodimensional image. Using printmaking, analogue photography, etching, collage and textile, the digital is overturned in favour of the handmade as a means to reposition oneself within the distant and remote landscapes we encounter through the digital screen.
