Attachment 4: epilogue

“In exploring a thought through drawing, the aspect that is so intriguing to our minds, I suspect, is what might be regar -ded as the speculative act.” “The Necessity for Drawing Tangible Speculation” Michael Graves After three semesters of intense practice of using computer as a main design tool, my hands gradually felt tired of typing specific numbers into those digital model’s parameters. “What is comfortable size of this room?” “5ft? 6ft? No, 5.5ft? No, 5.25ft?” It turned out to be a number guessing game. In computer, or to be more specific, Rhino, everything needs to be a number, pre-known and not controllable. Does data convey designers’ or people’s feelings? Holding a crema-flavor gelato, or an arancini, a micron pen or a lead holder became my right hand’s subconscious movements this summer in Florence. It was good to feel the gelato melting dripping and sliding down my hands. It was good to know the sweats of my hands could wrinkle Mylar up. The size of my right hand, waist power and slightly moist condition of my palm created works I did this summer. I reinterpreted my hands and trusted them to create everything for me.

Hand writing, hand drawing, hand modeling and hand eating. Thanks to Aaron Smolar sketching with me, my teamate Helen Han, Professor Igor Marjanovic and my instructor Alex Waller. Phoenix Yang 阳天旭 Aug 15, 2018 Jinan
