creating. What does it take to make a vision turn into reality? Well it takes the courage to believe and hold on to something even if it’s hard. It means to trust and follow a gut feeling. It also means to take risks, work absurdly long hours, but it also means to be alive. Why did we do what we are about to do? Why do you do what you do? All these questions fuelled the process of creating what has never been done before; an art fair solely dedicate to photography in Switzerland. We are here to stay, we are in for the long haul – a project like this needs care, it needs time like a child growing up. Our applause are the little things; a great gallery that applies, a good newspaper article, people on the street talking about it and the positive feedback from our friends, partners and supporters. We feel that we are privileged to live in a place like Basel and we look at it as our duty to give something back to Basel and its community. In creating an art platform for photography we believe to obtain this goal and to emotionally touch people. Be aware that everything, every little aspect in our life is fragile. What you hold in your hands now is a vision that turned into reality. Something that started in our brains, has been put on paper, an intangible something at first that became tangible for you to see, feel and breathe – in our understanding, this is art. Now go out there and enjoy every little bit! Your founders,
Sven & Samuel

welcome note.
“I
recently read in an article that we, you and I, are looking at more photographs from the moment we get up in the mornings until lunch time, than our grandparents did in their entire lifespan. Photography is something that touches all of us, it has the power to transform our emotions, and we can all in one way or the other, relate to it. Basel and also Switzerland have a long history of photography, you might have to look for it, but you will be surprised. Did you know for example that Basel has one of kind foundation of over 300’000 vintage photographs? A small piece was exhibited last fall at the Kunstmuseum Basel, and it all belongs to Peter Herzog of Stiftung Herzog. I heard he was a key motivator for the photo basel team to work hard despite the many hurdles they faced over the past 18 months organizing Switzerland’s first art fair for photography. Basel is known as the cultural capital of Switzerland, one must just have a look at the world-class museums we’ve got here. But Basel is also the unbeaten capital of world renowned fairs, and that is because of courageous folks like the organizers of photo basel; they followed their instincts and, created an idea from scratch, worked incredibly hard to make their vision become reality. We are now here at the first edition of photo basel and can enjoy the works of many talented artists that originate from all over the globe. A true feast for our senses! I truly hope we will see this cultural highlight from now on for many years to come.

history. photo basel was brought into life on January 2014 when Sven and Samuel contacted a few of their colleagues in the art world if they wanted to join them and brainstorm about the idea of creating an art fair for photography in their hometown Basel. After months of researching, visiting every major art fair and putting first ideas on paper, the duo was left alone – it seemed too hard to create a fair without any major sponsor backing them up. Nevertheless, inspired by the many great talks they had with gallerists, artists, collectors and mentors, they kept going on and searched for an attractive location. As many of you know, Basel is small and during high times such as Art Basel week, even smaller. Finally a location was found with the Ackermannshof. And it presented an outstanding solution for the first edition of photo basel: in the very heart of Basel, a few meters to the Rhine river and just steps from other art fairs in a building with an almost magic atmosphere. Ignited with the vision to create the first photography art fair in Switzerland, the two set out to find galleries that shared their spirit in bringing younger artists to Basel. And they met with success. Quickly one followed the other and suddenly they reached a point, when turning back was not an option anymore. By looking back they are happy they never gave up.
vision. «With photo basel we are striving to create a hub for artistic photography in the cultural capital of Switzerland, Basel. Our goal is to ignite photography in Basel for the long haul. We simply felt there was and is a need to exhibit photography on its own, photography needs its own space and rooms without any distraction. Our vision is that each exhibitor, collector and visitor together are creating a unique photo basel DNA. We for sure want to show the most talented galleries and artists in the field of photography. Furthermore we want to highlight the location Basel, as the epicentre for cultural high-life and art capital in the world during June each year. »

DRIVE IN photo basel is honoured to host the special exhibition „DRIVE IN“, curated by Esther Woerdehoff in cooperation with Zürich’s Bildhalle. Drive In is an exhibition about cars, showing the approach of this subject by numerous photographers, from the fifties to nowadays. When Elliott Erwitt, during and after the depression era, photographed those rolling dreams with his candid sense of humour and irony, cars, especially the very large and imposing ones, were already a landmark in the American landscape. When René Burri travelled to Brazil to document the building of modern cities, one of his most stunning photographs, «Men on a roof top, Sao Paulo, 1960», is a view of the rush hour traffic on a busy street. Simone Kappeler, another Swiss photographer, drove through America in 1981, 30 years after her fellow countryman Robert Frank, and took pictures with her Hasselblad, a Polaroid and cheap toy cameras like Diana. She saw America in colour, influenced by American movies and photography. Symbol of the American dream, of the rise of the middle class and of individualism through the whole XXth century, cars appear in a great amount of photographies. With the rise of Street Photography, cars were bound to peep out on most photos taken. Still cars are photographed not only as a transportation device through the packed streets of cities or in the great outdoors emptiness but also as a traveling place of intimacy in the public space, where people talk, eat, sleep, love, as in a ever moving home. tographers, cars are elements of decor, mechanical sculptures with their own modern aesthetic, frames that echoes the camera’s viewfinder but also boxes where small scenes take place between people as in a moving theatre. Cars ends up belonging to a cinematographic imaginary and become a subject for their own aesthetic qualities of machines and the symbolic of speed, power and freedom they convey.

on April 13th 1991 the galler moved to its current location. The choice of this special date to open the Gallery is not innocent as it may seem ; the « 13 » became along the years a strong reference ; through edition specifically : some particular prints and texts were published in 13 examples. Edition is the first passion of Baudoin Lebon ; he has been working as an art editor in a little office rue Mazarine for 2 years and won’t betrayed this first activity in opening its own gallery in 1976. A look back over these years of the gallery reveal several unchanging features; one of which is undoubtedly the diversity but also the long term work with the artists, the only way to discover a body of work. This diversity reveals an unclassifiable gallery, a curiosity and a wide open state of mind. Baudoin Lebon is involved in very different works of art (painting, sculpture, photography, installation) and shows in his artistic choices an obvious individuality without any consideration of comfort or conformity. Carlos Caamaño Proyecto Fotografico is an independent initiative created in 2008 with the intention of supporting and disseminating Peruvian photographic creations. Since its inception, the project has been focusing on the production and curating of exhibitions, and the editing of publications. The project is not a conventional gallery. It is however a dynamic horizontally managed platform, which seeks to circulate photographic contents generated by photographers represented through different channels, such as alternative exhibition spaces, cultural centres, fairs, museums, publications and digital media. With a visual proposal, which is between author´s documentary and conceptual photography, the thematic focus of the project is based on the transformation of society and collective memory. cubus-m
Berlin www.cubus-m.com
The Berlin gallery cubus-m was founded by Holger Marquardt in 2010 and presents work by young and established artists. It collaborates with curators, institutions, collections and galleries in Germany and internationally, regularly taking part in international art fairs. The focus of the interdisciplinary programme is to expose changes in the spatial, temporal and perceptual dimensions in regard to the environment. Rather than remaining purely architectural, this approach opens a social, linguistic and psychological space in which customary ways of looking and perceiving are challenged. cubus-m sees the diversity of the positions and media of the exhibited artists as an experimental site for aesthetic, conceptual and curatorial practice. In this way, the presentation of work by Mirja Busch, Wiebke Loeper and Andreas Fux at Photo Basel shows the medium of photography as a means of expression of diverse artistic approach and enquiry. „gute aussichten – new german photography“ was founded in 2004 as a private initiative and soon became, according to the German magazine DER SPIEGEL, „Germany’s most prestigious competition for young photography.“ Throughout their yearly cycle of exhibitions all around the world, they present „the prize-winning crème de la crème of young talents.“ (from Berliner Morgenpost) The „gute aussichten“ network has grown to include more than 100 young photographers, offering an insight into a diverse spectrum of issues that the young generation is driven by as much as grappling with. Their varied approaches include large installation pieces, staged multimedia works, even new blends of documentary and travel-photography with unique narrative structures. Where it comes to media, „gute aussichten“ itself is just as versatile as these works: in addition to the exhibitions, the works are shown in a yearly catalogue, in a special zine, on the web, in a blog, on social media and in the „gute aussichten“-editions. publisher area

widmertheodoridis
Switzerland www.0010.ch
widmertheodoridis pursues artistic positions from the broader regional periphery, that have the potential to compete in a national and international environment. Young and established artists from the fields of photography, drawing, sculpture and video present peaceful and provocative works that also receive broad attention at the fairs. The motivation of widmertheodoridis to show exciting and extraordinary positions far away from the urban centres takes on an unusual yet no less interesting relevance. The solitary location emphasizes on the one hand the original profile of the gallery and on the other hand it underlines the uniqueness of the represented artistic works. The gallery was founded in 2006 in Zurich by Werner Widmer and Jordanis Theodoridis. In 2013 after 61 exhibitions and 14 fairs in Switzerland and abroad the gallery moved to Eschlikon/TG. The new gallery premises comprises a contemporary designed building, an outdoor space for installations and the newly renovated hay barn for installations and video projections. Aluägä
Lausanne, Switzerland www.aaluaga.tumblr.com Aluägä Books is an online platform of artist books featured by Myriam Ziehli & Anne Golaz. It is the result of a nice feeling to be surrounded by good works and great book makers; therefore we decided to gather together a selection of this flourishing production within the reach of hand. The following books are works of young photographers who started exploring the medium by playing and constructing within the book form. All of them are related to a territory -intangible and extensible, but approximately located along the Geneva lake in Switzerland. Yet our interactions, influences and exchanges are worldwide -it is absurd and impossible to try to define an identity by building a box for this list of books- but there are sparks between people and places, and here are perhaps a few.
