LOVE TRANSCENDS OUR HUMAN NATURE LOVE INSPIRES US TO GREATNESS LOVE IS A KNOWING THAT YOU ARE HOME… These are just a few of the words cited by loved ones on the day Charlie and Dominique said their I do’s. As with many happy endings, they had to travel on many a winding road before there were any talks about marriage. Many of these roads were taken separately with Dominique deciding to go her way and Charlie his. This is their story… In 2003 on Charlie’s 28th birthday and after dating for almost a year, as his gift, Dominique gave Charlie a voucher which read: “This voucher entitles you to an amazing dinner for two at the Roma Revolving Restaurant on Durban Beach Front (South Africa) only redeemable with voucher…and Dom. Dress Smart.” They were living together in London at the time and two years later they split up. Charlie never even had the opportunity to take Dominique up on her offer.

After a huge amount of self-discovery and living separately in different parts of the world, including Norway and America, Charlie and Dominique’s paths crossed again in 2008 while on holiday in South Africa - the one completely unaware that the other would also be there. Thinking this must be fate, destiny or simply the universe’s power of attraction Charlie wasted no time. Having never done away with the voucher of so many years ago, he took Dom up on her offer and at the Roma Revolving Restaurant Charlie asked Dominique’s hand in marriage. So on 20 February 2010, under a big old tree in a beautiful garden at River Meadow Manor in Pretoria, before their closest family from all over - South Africa, England and America - Charlie and Dominique pledged their love to one another and after all the emotional and geographical journeys they both knew there would never be anyone else…

Flipping Wedding Flops! Sharney Nel

Something old, something new, something borrowed…Everything’s Blue!!

I am yet to come across a married couple where everything was flawless on their “perfect” day. Relax, this hardly means that your day will not be what you imagined it to be! It just means that Buxton Charles was spot-on when he said: “In life, as in chess, forethought wins”. Here are some testimonies, including my own, of things that I would never have known could go wrong on one’s special day. On the morning of 13 March 2011 I opened the windows of the beachfront hotel room and held my breath as the beauty of Table Mountain and the fresh crashing waves of the ocean introduced me to my wedding day. It was my first few seconds of peace, until the rush overwhelmed me as I realised what still needed to be done! I remembered the panic I felt the night before, when one of my bridesmaids had the same stunning diamond studded stilettos that vowed their splendour to me in the store. Luckily this was no big deal as my glamorous wedding gown cascaded over them. My matron of honour graciously calmed me that morning as she too experienced the most beautiful day of her life on 14 March the previous year. It however did not start off too well. Weeks prior to her big day it turned out her beautiful wedding gown could not be altered any further, rendering it slightly oversized. The boutique promised to order a smaller dress 24

and have it altered exactly to her size, but by the final fitting, nothing had been done! After locating a reputable dressmaker, her problem was solved but unfortunately the original design of the dress had to be compromised. I remember admiring the happy couple in a private moment of romantic tryst at the reception later that day. They were so enfolded in their moment of love, that they had not noticed the actual flames when some serviettes literally caught fire next to the wedding cake! A nearby guest hastily smothered the little fire but the bride and groom were totally blasé about anything other than their complete happiness. I remember thinking, “Que Sera, Sera” as I left the hotel with my beautiful bridesmaids en route to the coiffeur and makeup artists. As we entered the salon it suddenly dawned on me that I had forgotten to bring my veil. Crikey! My entourage of beauty were quick on their feet to console me. This took me back to 1 March 2010. It was the day two very close friends of ours pledged their eternal love. I recall walking in on a surprisingly calm bride as she prepared to embrace a new life. I was completely obscured from two things; one, she had been in a slight frenzy just moments earlier and two, she had a hole in her veil. A whole hole! No one even noticed the hole, or that the veil was back to front concealing it. All that was remembered was the picturesque moment when the newlyweds released their two white doves as a symbol of their endless unity. So, I reminisced myself into tranquillity for the rest of the day. There were moments that

almost transformed me into Bridezilla, like when my heels mischievously dislodged themselves from the soles of my shoes or when I noticed one of the groomsmen was wearing the wrong waistcoat. Despite any of this I was treading (shoeless and happily so) in a fairy tale and to this day, I still am…

Sharney & Hubby on their wedding day, Blissfully Happy!!

Lessons learnt along the way… Choose your wedding party wisely; it makes the biggest difference to have their undivided support when you need it. • Ensure your dress is the focal point of the planning; you can compromise on anything else but this! • The best way to ensure the perfect fit is to purchase or tailor-make your exact size, you can always sell or rent it out again. • Wedding veils are extremely delicate so take care not to store it anywhere close to a zipper. • Make a day out of shoe shopping with your bridesmaids to ensure your shoes will not be the same as theirs (unless you want it to be!). • Walk in your wedding shoes for at least two hours a few days before the wedding so that you have ample time to return them in case they break easily. • Ensure that candles are kept far from highly flammable objects and familiarise all groomsmen of the location of the fire extinguisher at a particular venue. • It would be advised to have the groom and groomsmen collect the suits together and fit them on one last time to ensure everything is in order. • Be present on your day and savour every moment as best you can otherwise it will be over before you blink! • Relax! Your wedding day and life will be beautiful, not despite, but because of the little flaws that remind you of how one can still experience a fairy tale in reality.

Spring

Cover Girl Erika Lintoni

Spring Spectacular! By: Helena Sheridan

As a stylist I have no authority to talk about the

weather... I can only give my personal points of view on issues like global warming and the changing weather patterns. I do however find it difficult to proclaim the usual excitement over the arrival of spring, since winter has been so odd this year. Cape Town experienced a few weeks that can only be described as ‘Summer in Winter’ and the small-town Swartland-girl in me actually hopes we still get some rain deep into spring. Our wheat and wine farmers need it. But the sun is rising earlier, the days are getting longer and warmer and it is time to pack away the coats, scarves, hats and gloves that we love to accessorise with in the cold of winter.

So for our spring fashion editorial we focus on four fun springtime looks. This month we were lucky enough to work with Brazilian beauty Erica Lintoni who was in the country for a few months. Erica, who hails from Sau Palo (and now has to find accommodation for all of us for the 2014 Soccer World Cup, hint hint) has an amazing pair of legs that stretches from the Cape to Rio. So, naturally, I wanted the outfits to show that off. Our four looks fit into four aspects of your life...

The first look was the sporty, more active look. Whether you are going to the gym, sports match or simply want to stay comfortable while you have brunch with a few friends – the sporty look is fun and can work for you. I paired super-shorts (because in an ideal world we would all have legs like that) with a modern, more tailored and fashionable hoodie. You can tie it up with a scarf or matching material to give it more shape. You could also wear trousers – there are some super stylist sweatpants options out there lately. I added a more formal jacket to give more texture (not just tracksuit material). I paired it with fun hightop sneakers. The bag is sexy and powerful and adds to the colour in this composition that focuses on hues and tones of grey.

Our second look is for daytime outings. This combination of denim, which is always a winner, has been paired with turquoise, one of this season’s must-have colours. This outfit is perfect for shopping, lunch dates or everyday activities in spring. By adding tights you don’t have to be too tanned just yet and you’re protected from an unexpected chill. Take a cardigan or jacket with you just in-case.Like my dad always said: “If you have it you can put it on, but if you don’t have it... You get it.” Ja, Pa...

For work wear this month we paired spring’s hottest colour - a peachy orange called Coral Rose - with soft textures and neutral colours. The high waisted pants are formal enough to go to work but playful enough to be fashionable and creative. The knitted top adds texture and warmth while the peapod-coloured bag makes the perfect spring time colour combination. Always wear high heels with high waisted pants to avoid looking short. For more tips on wearing this statement item, click here.

The final look – for evening events and spring time celebrations – combines classic colours such as cream and black with high fashion items like pleads (oh, so hot right now!) and lace as well as shoulder details. Pleads are fun if you are going dancing – the volume will love being twirled around the dance floor! We hope that we have inspired you to have some fun with your wardrobe this spring. BLOGGER

The philosophy of photography

~ Lezanne Janse van Rensburg

Photography is more than just light and colour. They are symbolic of the individual you were, are and are likely to evolve into. We are so often fascinated and immersed in the beauty of the present moment - and I see no fault in that - but sometimes we have to reflect on the path we have walked up to now. Had we not been faced with the trials of a difficult childhood or the jubilation of that first kiss we would not be able to measure the immensity of our lives. Think of your photos this way: While they’re confined to a leather-bound album or a box somewhere in your cupboard, you are oblivious to the lessons, inspirations and dreams you once had or still have but lost somehow. Since my early teens I treasured photographs. They were my salvation – my compass – and they served as mentors in times when questions were many and answers were few. I regarded photographs as an ever progressive evolution of the woman I have become and the lady I hope to be. Photographs give you the right to be self-absorbed for a few minutes, to revel in the moments when your toddler-mind made mud cakes just before church; naturally your parents weren’t as proud of you as you had expected, but it was worth the hiding. It is for this reason that I make it my responsibility to bring people back to the memories they filed away so many years ago. I have seen people make sense of overwhelmingly painful memories by simply re-evaluating their decisions through photographs. I like to refer to this process of introspection, reflection and realisation as “The Philosophy of Photography”. It’s a simple concept and takes very little effort from our side. While it is important to focus on the present and the implications it has on the future, it is also just as important to revisit our past. Often the answers to our questions are not in books or on television, but in the intricate passages hidden behind our eyes.
