From the convention committee The Convention Organising Committee (COC) have great pleasure in bringing you the full programme for Hutt2019, the 67th Annual Convention of the Photographic Society of New Zealand. The convention is built around a focus on learning and the majority of sessions have hands-on elements to them. We have put together a programme that covers a wide range of genres and we have assembled an excellent selection of top photographers that we are sure will excite and inspire you. This booklet takes you day by day through the programme and is designed to help you choose the options that you wish to register for. With over 100,000 possible combinations there is plenty to choose from, however most sessions have restricted numbers, so people who delay in registering will find their options reduced. This booklet is some 70 pages long so we would not recommend that you print the entire document. Just print pages 6 to 9, which contain the programme for each day, and then work your way through the details and mark up your choices. This will make filling out the online registration form much easier when it becomes available on 3 November 2018. We have really enjoyed putting this programme together for you and hope that you are all inspired to learn from our amazing line up of presenters.

From the President Hi fellow photographers, A PSNZ National Convention is one of the biggest events in the Society’s calendar year and something that we all look forward to. HUTT2019s, Focus on Learning is going to be an exciting and inspirational convention and I hope you have been enjoying the pre-publicity to date. The programme has been carefully developed to cover almost every genre of photography and we are excited to have such a talented line-up of outstanding Australasian photographers and presenters joining us. I’m confident there is something for everyone in the programme – the difficulty will be in having to narrow down our choices! With registrations opening very soon, I encourage you to look over the programme carefully so that you can book early to secure your preferred workshop or off site activity. I look forward to seeing you in HUTT2019.

Kind regards, Moira Blincoe LPSNZ President

Friday optional workshops

10

Programme as at 1 December 2018 - May be subject to change.

D1W1: Post Processing – Basic This workshop will be run on Friday afternoon by Chris Parkin APSNZ. It is an introductory session for those who have never used, or are just starting to use, Adobe products for post processing. Chris will cover the basics of post processing making this session best for those with little or no previous experience using Adobe software. This is an introductory/basic post processing session, so we ask the more experienced to select one of the other sessions better suited to their skill level. Requirements: Bring along some image files to work on Accessibility: Easy walk – approx 5 min. from Convention venue

11

D1W2: Studio lighting 101 This is an introductory course to studio lighting. We will be using both studio strobes and speed-lights to show simple set-ups to improve the lighting of your subjects. We will use gear that is relatively inexpensive and simple set-ups that anyone will be able to replicate at home. Requirements: Camera Accessibility: Easy walk – approx 5 min. from Convention venue

D1W4: Pin-up Photography

FULL

Ngahuia Davey will share her experience and expertise in the art of pin-up photography in this hands on session. The term ‘pin-up’ was coined during World War II when American soldiers would pin pictures, usually drawings and sometimes photos, of beautiful women to their bunks or in their aircraft. Today there is a growing culture of retro-inspired pin-up girls that still dress and model like the original pin-up pictures. Numbers will be strictly limited for this workshop. We recommend registering early if you wish to attend. Requirements: Camera Accessibility: Staircase / Elevator

Programme as at 1 December 2018 - May be subject to change.

D1W5: Amongst the honours Anyone who has attempted an honours set will know that it is a very stressful process, not helped by what appears to be inconsistency between what is presented in written form and what we see in successful sets. At each convention we see the honours sets and often pose the question, “What made that a successful set? In this session Bruce Girdwood FPSNZ from the PSNZ Honours Board will take you through the sets and provide some insight on what made them successful in the process. This session will be a valuable insight in assessing your own work even if you do not have any immediate plans to submit for honours. For those engaged in the process it is a valuable opportunity to ask questions face to face with an honours board judge. Requirements: None Accessibility: Ground floor

15

D1W6: Around the hutt scavenger hunt A photographic scavenger hunt in and around the Lower Hutt CBD. We will provide you with the clues and it is up to you to find and photograph them using only your cell phone camera. Directions will be provided on the convention website for you to upload your images to directly from your phone on completion of the hunt for judging. There will be a prize for the person who in our biased opinion, has the most correct. Requirements: Camera Phone Accessibility: Easy walk – approx 60 minutes total walking

D1A4: A Bug Walk with Bryce McQuillan

FULL

On this walk, led by Bruce McQuillan, you will be looking for invertebrates to photograph at night. It will cover the basics to night macro photography before heading off to find subjects. This will cover aperture, shutter, ISO and flash. A range of macro subjects are likely to be found during the walk including various types of invertebrates, such as moths, beetles, and spiders. 96% of New Zealand fauna are invertebrates and many of these are nocturnal so the focus of the walk will be photographing invertebrates, but there may be changes to practise macro photography on other subjects that we come across on the walk, such as flowers and fungi.

Requirements: • Camera, macro lens or extension tubes, and a flash (pop up flash is fine). A flash diffuser is highly recommended. • A head torch with charged batteries is essential. A second small hand torch is recommended for focusing. • Warm layers of clothing are recommended. Accessibility: Some uneven ground

Morning shoots on the river For those early risers an opportunity to go down to the Hutt River and shoot the rising sun. We are offering two versions of this trip. D2A1 will be a regular morning with participants bringing their own cameras. D2A2 will be different. In fact we are confident that has not been done at a convention in the last ten years. You will have the option of going old school by shooting with film. Our friends at Splendid will be providing film services (and some old cameras for those that no longer have them). After the shoot Splendid will race off to process and scan the films so participants will have the digital images to take away with them. With the support of Ilford there will be no charge for costs of the film processing.

Saturday morning workshops

D2W1: How to achieve a great nature image What goes into getting a great nature image is a question that many people ponder, and this workshop is intended to assist with that respect. The session will be in two parts. In the first section Chris Helliwell (2018 NZIPP Nature Photographer of the Year, and twice winner of the PSNZ William C Davies Memorial Trophy ) will run you through the steps and techniques that he uses to get his award winning shots. Then in the second part we are assembling a panel of nature judges who will outline what it is that they look for when assessing images. Knowing what judges look for in an image can provide an important step in improving your images. This is particularly relevant in an area such as nature where post production plays a much lesser role than in other genres. Requirements: None Accessibility: Staircase / Elevator

D2W5 - Capturing the Street

FULL

Led by Helen Westerbeke FPSNZ, this workshop will highlight the things that many see every day, elevating them to works of art and turning the photographer into a story teller. The session will begin with a short session covering key tips and techniques to capture those candid moments of life all around us, before taking a slow walk to the Riverbank Market to put these tricks into practice. It is an easy 10 minute flat walk from the convention centre to the market. The market is full of activity all year round. There will be plenty of things to see and photograph. Even if people photography is not your strength, there is plenty to photograph with a wide range of stalls present. The plan is to also have a session photographing skateboarders at a skate park near the venue or one near the market.

D2W6: Post Processing – Workflow On Saturday morning Alastair McAra will take you through the functions in the ‘Library’ module of Lightroom. In this session you will learn how to best utilise Lightroom to import, catalogue and keyword your images. This area of Lightroom is often not well understood or used, and as a result users can spend hours trying to find their images. This session will help you solve that issue. The session is applicable to anyone who currently uses Lightroom. We recommend those who have never used Lightroom to register for the Friday basic session instead.

Requirements: Image files (RAW’s) Accessibility: Easy walk – approx 5 min. from Convention Venue

D2W9 - In camera creative process

Not every photo needs to be created in post processing. There are lot of techniques for producing stunning images in-camera without all of the extra computer work. This workshop, run by Destina Munro will show you how to do that. With an emphasis on images created “in Camera”, Destina’s perspective is exploring and capturing the non-literal view of her surrounds, moods and moments through colour and light, seeing not just the subject, but the context from which its deeper impact may be derived. In this workshop you will start with a short tutorial on how to maintain photographic inspiration; strengthen your images using design elements such as colour, shape and form; and learn how to use your camera settings using different camera techniques such as camera movement, out of focus, multiple exposures, and the value of over-exposing and under-exposing your images. You will then have an opportunity to practise these techniques in and around the convention centre. The final part of the session will give an opportunity to share and critique the images. Requirements: Camera Accessibility: Staircase / Elevator

D2W11 - Capturing the Action In this practical workshop you will be given some insight into how a sports photographer captures the action. Then you will head over to the Hutt Recreation Grounds to photograph a rugby match. While you will be praticising on a sports game, the techniques learned, of anticipating and tracking a moving object, are easily transferrable into other genres. Requirements: Camera Accessibility: Easy walk

37

D2W12: Architecture photo walk

FULL

This workshop/photo walk will be led by Wellington commercial photographer Nick Servian. For most of his career, you needed specialised large-format cameras with “movements” for architectural work, allowing the lens to be shifted and tilted. Now you can buy tilt/shift lenses, at least for 35mm cameras, and image-editing software is used to correct most of the issues with perspective. Having said that you can’t save a “bad” image and knowing how to minimise issues ahead of time will save you a lot of grief later. The session will be in three parts. The first will be a quick introduction on techniques, then the group will head out on a photo walk to see what they can capture. In the final part of the session we will take some of the images into Lightroom/Photoshop and show the techniques used to correct the perspective.

D2W13 - Post-processing develop Alastair McAra will take you through the ‘Develop’ module of Lightroom. Once you are comfortable using Lightroom, you will find that the majority of your post processing can be handled here and you will only jump across to Photoshop for more complicated adjustments. The session is applicable to anyone who currently uses Lightroom at an intermediate to advanced level. We recommend those who have never used Lightroom to register for the Friday basic session instead.

D2W14 - Processing the shoot This afternoon session will follow on from the morning shoot (D2W3) where we will be using the computer labs at Sacred Heart College to edit the image. Aaron will demonstrate his approach to post processing and participants will receive guidance. While preference will be given to this session, to those that attended the morning session, it is not an absolute requirement. Those that wish to do the afternoon session alone will be asked to bring along some portrait images they have shot beforehand.

D3O1: Nature at staglands wildlife reserve Staglands Wildlife Reserve offers visitors the unique and exciting opportunity to connect with nature in a beautiful, natural environment. Feed and freely interact with wildlife in this very special place – the product of one man’s passion and vision to experience nature at its best. Located in the scenic Akatarawa Valley near Upper Hutt, Wellington, Staglands is a ‘must see’ attraction for local families and tourists visiting the Wellington region. The reserve consists of several different locations, all with their own unique animals. There are several walk-through aviaries where it is possible to get up close to the birds without needing really long lenses. It is home to distinctive species such as the Blue Duck (whio in te reo), Kea, Kaka and Brown Teal (Pateke), as well as more common birds such as swans, geese, peacocks and other ducks. In addition to the bird Staglands has rare species of goats, kune kune pigs and deer, as well as long horn sheep. For those that want to photograph old building their stables and the old bush settlement provide some interesting opportunities. This off-site is being led by Craig McKenzie. D3O2: Nature wild and tamed This off-site takes you to the Northern reach of the Hutt Valley. Starting at Kaitoke Regional Park we will explore the bush-clad hills, the Hutt River gorge and centuries-old rata, rimu and beech forest that feature in this magnificent natural setting. The area is so magical that it was used as the location of Rivendell, home of the elves in the “Lord of Rings movies. The site of Rivendell is marked with an Elvian arch. We will then head to the Aston Norwood Gardens for afternoon tea, followed by the opportunity to wander around the manicured gardens including water features that have been loosely based on a Japanese garden theme. There are thousands of flowering cherries, maples, rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias within this garden along with the local native bird life. This off-site is being led by Bruce Girdwood FPSNZ.

D3O3: in search of fungi The aim of this off-site is to photograph some of the many different fungi that can be found in our native bush. We have several locations in mind but will not reveal the exact location determined until closer to the convention as it is dependent upon the weather conditions as to which will be the best site. A flash diffuser would be recommended. Accessibility: Uneven ground and slopes.

D3O4: Cannon’s Point (Landscape) We have teamed up with the Wellington 4WD Club to take you into areas that you cannot easily get to. Starting in Totara Park, the journey will go up and over Cannon’s Point and then into the Akatarawa Valley stopping along the way to photograph the landscape. The off-site will be led by Lindsay Keats with the support of Fujifilm.

D3O7: Shooting WOW fashions The World of Wearable Arts (WOW) has been impressing audiences for the last 30 years. It started as a small venture in Nelson and has grown to a multi night event with packed halls and attracts designers from 40 countries. For the last two years Convention Committee Chair, Paul Whitham has been helping local WOW designers with photographs as part of their entries and in April 2019 they are returning the favour by making available several outfits for PSNZ members to photograph. The shoot will take place at several locations on the old grandstand at Trentham Gardens. This includes both studio and natural lighting models. These designs are so elaborate that you can use both wide angle and macro lens to capture the details. In 2017 New York fashion photographer and educator Lindsay Adler presented at the NZIPP conference. D3O9: Seeing the potential We all know that getting a great image is a combination of factors such as subject, background and lighting. There are some locations that are so perfect that it takes a real effort not to make a great image at them. Unfortunately these locations are few and far between and the reality is that most times when we are asked to photograph an event, we have little control over the timing or the environment that we end up shooting in. When faced with such situations it is up to the skills of the photographer to see the potential that exists and produce great images. We have to make the best of what is on offer. This “off-site” will actually be based around the Events Centre. We will have the services of two models and the group will brainstorm how to approach each location. Catherine will demonstrate how she would shoot it and then participants will have the opportunity to try out how they would approach the scene. This off-site will be led by Catherine Cattanach with the support of Fujifilm. Accessibility: Easy walk – some uneven surfaces

D310: Creative story telling Sometimes you don’t want a photo to simply be a “record shot”.You may want it challenge the viewer’s perception of something, or you may want to leave the image open to their interpretation. This is the realm of creative story telling using the camera. This session will be led by Lara Gilks and will use some of the less photographed areas of Trentham racecourse. Lara will explain the genre of Lens Culture and work with you to create your own work of art on an offsite workshop at Trentham Racecourse. Challenge perfection. Take the ordinary and make it interesting, you will be working to create a compelling story out of the ordinary – images that ask questions and test boundaries, a little bit quirky and edgy with a unique personal vision.

Accessibility: Easy walk – some uneven surfaces, and obstacles.

Sean Aickin With a photographic father, who had his own photo shop, there was little doubt Sean would end up in the photographic industry. Starting out in the late 90s Sean worked part time at Avtec 20/20 before going on to work in various other photo stores in NZ and Aussie before settling in Wellington at Wellington Photographic Supplies. Staying there for 15 years he got to know the local industry from all sides, customers photographers and distributors. As a steadfast analogue fan he thought it would be a good idea to open an analogue focussed photo shop and in September 2018 he realised this dream! Splendid Photo is the analogue photographers dream shop, stocking film from all over the world and making film photography that much easier in NZ! As well as starting Splendid, Sean has been an active photographer within the music industry photographing bands from all over the world and he also loves a good street photograph.
