MODERN PORTRAITURE GUIDE

TACOMA, WASHINGTON

Welcome to Photography by J.Ann! I’m so happy to have you as my client and am very excited to begin creating lasting memories with you and your family. I began my photography business in 2014 out of a love of creating beautiful images for individuals who found value in my style and asthetic. I began my photography journey photographing landscapes of various locations that the military sent me to and really began photographing individuals when I was given the chance to lead the fine sons and daughters of the United States Army into a combat mission. My mission and goal was to document the lives of my Soldiers and every day happenings into a complete collection of images documenting a year away from home. I succeeded and learned so much through the process.

My style and asthetic are unique to me and I hope that you have had the chance to browse through my website and imagery online. I characterize my style as authentic, captivating, and modern portraiture in comparison to today’s trends of brightly lit and highly contrasted images you see. I seek beauty and emotion in all images I create. I know you have a choice in choosing your photographer and I thank you for choosing me. Please review this guide to help you get familiar with planning and preparing for your session. Should you have any questions, please contact me at info@photographybyjann.com or 253-693-8564 at any time and I will respond within 48 hours. xoxo

Studio Location

My home studio is located in Downtown Tacoma in the Historic Perkins Building. The building was built in 1919 and when you walk in, you’ll be amazed by the architecture and intricate details put into the beautiful space. I am located on the 5th floor and I openly welcome you into my home as we do your photography session. I want you to feel comfortable and relaxed while we capture your inner beauty and personality. In a relaxed setting, there’s only you, a lot of chatter, and lights and backdrops. Hair and make up is done on-site so you won’t have to go far to have a great experience! There are also numerous places to each in the local area such as Mattadors, Vincero’s Cafe, Starbucks, The Forum, and Pita Pit, to name a few!

Address: 1101 A Street, Tacoma, WA 98402 Parking: M-F: Paid parking on street or in garage Sat: Buy max parking - get all day free! Sun: Free Parking! **Recommend 4 hours of parking is needed for each session. Recommend parking in the garage at the corner of A Street and 11th (left hand side) to avoid parking tickets with City of Tacoma.

What will You Experience? Your session is unique to you and is crafted with your vision in mind. From the initial inquiry, throughout the entire planning process, I focus on you and your needs as my client and photographic subject. The planning for your session begins with a phone call. I believe email will only convey so much and hearing each other’s voice is incredibly important to the proper communication of visions, ideas, and creativity. I’m going to ask you which images inspire you the most and what images you would love to see yourself, your family, your loved ones in. From there, we find our starting point. From there, we collaborate as a team to develop your vision further. I start with creating you a Pinterest board that you can access and share your ideas and favorite images. We will talk via email and phone to discuss what you should bring to your wsession such as clothing, accessories, shoes, etc. One week prior to your session, I will contact you to confirm our session date and time as well as introduce you via email/phone to your hair and make up stylist. If you choose to schedule a wardrobe stylist, I will also coordinate for a quick telephonic chat to discuss ideas. When you come in to your session, you are coming into my home. My home is your home. Coffee, tea, a sip of wine, treats and snacks are available to you. Your scheduled hair and make up artist will begin preparing your skin for make up application and will work their magic upon you. From there, you are then posed and guided by me in front of my lens. I will dress you up in what you’ve brought and accessorize you as needed. I will guide you into the best poses that flatter your body. You can trust me to capture the best images of you, your family, or your loved ones. Approximately two weeks after your session, we will schedule you for an in-person review of your images. The in-person viewing can be done at your home, in a mutually feasible location, or in my home. At this time, you may order any images you love and place your order directly through me for items such as framed collections, digital collections, or one of four of my coveted collections. Ala carte options and payment plans are available.

What to Wear What you wear for your session is the single most important consideration impacting the overall look and feel of your images, second only to your choice of photographer. Depending on your personal style, you may wish to create something truly unique for your images, investing in some cutting edge trendy clothing for yourself/family, for images that appear as though you’ve just stepped out of a fashion layout in a magazine. While you don’t always dress that way, you were also photographed together in some new and different places, and were able to do something different to make the event even more memorable. Whether you dress up, dress down, or get totally funky, it is important that you and your family members find his/her/your style. Does your daughter prefer pants instead of dresses? Does your son like to wear button down shirts over an untucked T-shirt? Just because you will be appearing in the same image doesn’t mean you have to wear the same outfits. While we’ve all seen the images of families together on a beach in a white shirt and khakis (and those images have their place), it is also important to showcase your individual styles and personalities through the clothing you select. You want to be coordinated without overly matching. If your daughter wears a gingham blue and white checkered dress, your son may choose a solid blue shirt that picks up the blue from her dress. You may choose a different shade of blue for your husband, or a complementary shade. Matching one another in terms of formality and the style of dress means dad shouldn’t show up in a tie and jacket while the kids wear jeans and T-shirts. If you decide to go for the beach look, everyone should match in style without wearing the exact clothes. If you have younger kids, feel free to include them in the process of selecting their clothes. I find kids have a lot of fun in sessions where they are allowed to wear something that they’ve thrown together themselves, as opposed to wearing something they despise and are being forced to wear. I do offer a closet of clothing and jewelry picked from vintage and unique stores located in the Tacoma, Washington area. Please feel free to browse through my closet during an in-person session or just before photographing begins to see if you may like one of my many dresses, skirts, and/or accessories. Finally, in order to assist you in choosing items you may like to wear, I’ve put together a Pinterest board for Women’s Clothing Style and Men’s Clothing Style. If this session is for children’s session, I have a vision board for Children’s Photography Ideas. If you’d like the ultimate session, I can arrange a personal stylist for you at additional cost, subject to availability. Preparing for Your Session Skin Preparation FOR THE FACE Teeth- Whiten teeth using Crest White Strips or any whitening application you prefer. A beautiful white smile goes a long way! Exfoliate- Exfoliating helps to get rid of damaged skin. I suggest visiting my Pinterest page HERE for Do-ItYourself sugar scrubs that you can do from the comfort of your own home. These are merely suggestions and will assist with exfoliation in preparation for beautiful skin. Facials- If you’re planning on doing a facial, please schedule your facial at least 1 week ahead of schedule to allow your face to heal from chemical peels or reduce redness. Eyebrows- Waxing or threading your eyebrows should be done at least a week in advance to reduce any readiness or breakouts as a result of the procedure. Facial Hair- If choosing to wax or thread anywhere else on your face, please consider how your face reacts to such procedures. Please consider waxing or threading your facial hair at least 2-3 weeks in advance of your photography session in case of breakouts or reactions to the wax or threading. FOR THE BODY Tanning- Please avoid tanning during the week prior to your session as the intensity of the redness from the sun will be visible in the photos, especially if you get burned. Extra retouching can be done, but at cost. Spray Tanning- I do not recommend spray tanning as usually, to the eye, it is very appealing, but on camera, it photographs very orange-red like. I further discourage the use of spray tanning due to its potential to leave streaks and dry unevenly. If you’d like, I recommend a tinted moisturizer instead. Shaving/Waxing- Please ensure to shave/wax the night before your photo shoot, especially in areas that may be revealed during such photo shoots as a boudoir photography session or summertime photography session. Underarms, legs, bikini areas are always good to touch up the night before. Hydration- Hydration is important for skin, lips, face, keeping exhaustion at bay, and overall feeling good! Please hydrate throughout the week to ensure your skin is supple and soft for make up application. Hydration will also keep you from feeling and looking tired.

Preparing for Your Session

Hair Preparation FOR THE HAIR Hair Cuts-Please schedule your trims and haircuts at least two weeks in advance to ensure that you love your cut and are feeling happy about it. While some individual’s hair doesn’t automatically grow back in that time, at least you will have given yourself enough time to fix the haircut if you don’t love it. Also, a haircut can bring vibrance and bounce back into your locks, so go ahead, pamper yourself! Roots/Dying Your Locks- Touch up your roots the same week you have your photo shoot scheduled. If dying your locks, try to dye your hair at least one week out, again, to make sure you love it and if not, to make sure you have enough time to adjust. Hands and Nails Preparation FOR THE NAILS Manicure/Pedicure- A manicure never hurt and neither does a pedicure, so go ahead and book a mani-pedi if you’d like. Most photos will show your hands, whereas, unless you’re in sandals or really want your bare feet in the photograph, please ensure you get them done in tip-top shape!

Investment Why is it called an “investment?” I empathize with you, as my client, the concern over the term “investment.” However, when we look upon history and we look through images of our generations past, we filter through images that are tangible and real to the touch. The digital versions of those vintage images began with the scanning of a real portrait, weathered throughout the years. We delicately hold images of our loved ones who have passed or look fondly upon images of times passed. Images are memories that are created to tell our future versions of ourself what it was like in that one moment, one snapshot of time. I hold fondly the images created by my favorite photographer and continually use them to represent myself and remind myself of what I looked like when I stepped in front of the camera. Your investment includes the session fee, hair and make up or a photoshoot of up to 4 family members, the experience of being a valued client of Photography by J.Ann, the time and care to craft beautiful images, editing and the opportunities to earn rewards through referrals. Session Fee $220 Includes Hair/Make Up (for individual shoot) or up to 4-person family, photoshoot, and photographer’s time to prepare 35-50 edited images for viewing (Approx 2hrs photographing time) $25 per additional person Collections Collection 1: $499 Wallet Images - 8 images per sheet -4 ea 5x7 mounted prints - 4 ea 8x10 mounted prints - 4e 11x14 mounted prints - 2 ea 3 accordion booklets Collection 2: $699 (save $175) 10 Digital Image Folio - 1 ea (reg $350) 8x8 Album - 10 spreads - 1 ea (reg $250) 5x5 complimentary book - 1 ea (reg $175) $100 credit ($100)

Studio Policies Pre-Session 1. 50% of the session fees are due at the time of booking in order to reserve your special date and time. If you have not already submitted your session fee, please contact the studio. The remaining balance will be due prior to service being rendered. 2. If you must cancel your session due to child illness or other personal emergency, please provide our studio with 48 hours’ notice so we can reschedule your session and provide this time for another client. Failure to provide adequate notice of a cancellation will result in the forfeiture of your session fees and new session fees will be required to reserve a different date. 3. Session fees are nontransferable and nonrefundable. Client may re-schedule at a time and date that photographer is available. 4. Payment must then be made via certified check, money order, cash, credit card, or online via Squarespace generated invoice. Personal checks will not be accepted for payment. During Our Session

1. Attendance at photo sessions is generally limited to those being photographed to cut down on distractions. In the case of children and newborns, attendance is limited to two parents only. If you would like to bring an additional friend to assist you in your photo shoot, please understand that they are an assistant only and should not interfere with photographing unless otherwise asked for assistance. Please coordinate in advance if you are attending to bring someone to assist you or provide support. 2. Cameras of any kind are not permitted at our shoot. 3. Please arrive on time to your session properly prepared to have make up and hair done. Please ensure you arrive with all items you intend to use for the photoshoot. Because the session is of a set length, additional time for preparation will reduce the amount of time we can spend in-session and will limit the amount of images we can capture. Post-Session

1. You will be contacted once your session images are ready to preview, and a presentation appointment will be arranged if presentation is to be made in-person. This appointment will assist you in making image selections and choosing sizes for wall portraits. Because your order will be taken on this date, please arrive with the provided ordering guide prepared to make decisions regarding your order. Family and friends are welcome to attend this presentation if they wish to place their own order or if you feel their presence will assist you in preparing your order. 2. An online gallery will be available for ten days to allow you to make a note of your favorites before your order session.

Studio Policies

3. Client images are held for a maximum of two months after our photography session. All unordered images are purged 30 days after your presentation appointment. 5. Completed portrait orders can be obtained at the studio once you have been notified that your print order is ready. Please call to make pick up time arrangements before you arrive so your order can be assembled and ready for you. Orders can be mailed to you. Please let the studio assistant or photographer know during the ordering session. 6. Reprint orders can be made at any time throughout the year while your images are in our archives. Please note there is a minimum $300.00 investment required for all re-orders. 7. Scanning or reproduction of purchased images constitutes copyright infringement and is punishable by law. If you require additional copies of an image, the only person permitted to print and reprint from your image set is your photographer unless consent is given in a reprint authorization memorandum. 10.
