Journalism Portfolio Introduction to Journalism and Graphical Design Matias Jaramillo Period 6

Essay Going forward in my life, I honestly feel like journalism and design are not my specialty nor what I plan on doing as my career. However, I definitely have learned a tremendous amount about design with programs such as InDesign and Photoshop. Being able to combine so many elements into one piece has also helped my imagination grow. Now that the year is over and I have learned the basics to the Design Process as well as the creative process involved with making pieces such as spreads for the literary magazine, I am happy to have learned so much from the course and to be able to work on these programs in the future. From the design process to the creative writing involved with the pieces we wrote, I was able to combine everything I had learned in the year to come up with a final result I never thought possible. Coming in to this class the first day of school, I expected to learn how to change some pictures a little bit but it completely surpassed all my expectations. I learned how to do things I never even thought possible and I am extremely grateful. Although I don’t plan on making a career out of this, I am sure that at some point in my future in college or maybe even high school, I will be able to put my skills to work.

Reflection There was a picture I took at the time of the completion of the Photography Portfolio that I will never forget. The artistic value as well as the significance of the picture truly left me in awe and surprised at what I was truly capable of doing. The picture represented the light at the end of the tunnel. The fire at the end of the dark tunnel. The actual picture incorporated leading lines, center of visual interest, repetition of pattern, selective focus and framing. The candle at the end of the holster exemplified the light at the end of the tunnel and it truly allowed me to understand the hidden meaning a picture could have. Two other pictures I took in the year that I liked were also included in my Photography Portfolio. They were meant to show different elements of composition. This was when I began to understand what the elements truly meant and was beginning to practice. It exemplifies how much I have grown as a photographer since the beginning of the year.

Mayor Found Broken After Falling from a Wall When Parkour Stunt Went Wrong

By Matias Jaramillo Staff Reporter

COLCHESTER - The town mayor died last Sunday, June 15, after reports say he fell off a wall while attempting a daring parkour stunt and all of his innards spilled out. Hours passed after the incident and still multiple doctors and fellow friends attempted to fix Humpty with continuous failure. “All the mayor’s doctors and all the mayor’s men failed to put him back together”, said his fellow parkour stunter and close friend Damien Walters. It was a regular day for Mr. Dumpty while practicing his parkour for an upcoming event. Then all of a sudden, he incorrectly placed his hands when attempting a double twisting Photo by STEFY CAMPOS spinning corkscrew; his most daring stunt yet. “You could Humpty Dumpty, Mayor of Colchester, hear sobbing all across the town when he was officially was found cracked on the floor wih all renounced dead because he was such a family man, he cared his innards spilled out last Sunday. Sadly, for everyone.”, Lisbeth Roter said. even with the help of various doctors, he died. Yvette Flor, another person on the scene, reportedly said, “He seemed like such a young boy with so much talent and such a bright future.” Humpty was only 27 years old, which meant his shell was still fragile and soft. This is what ended up leading to his death. “3 more years would’ve fully hardened his shell and he surely would’ve survived the fall but it happened too soon.”, Louis Pasteur; the town doctor said. Humpty was known not only for his spot as mayor but also as a family man along with his wife and 2 kids, whom were left fatherless. He was also seen practicing his parkour all around town while making sure everything was in order. A memorial was held for Humpty on Wednesday night where the entire town showed up, expressing their gratitude for their great mayor. Writing TechNOlogy What if you could get anything you ever wanted, with the simple touch of a finger? Order anything to arrive just at your doorstep rather than having to go yourself? Well, you actually can. Nowadays, most teenagers are extremely reliant on their network devices like their phones, computers, and accessories like Alexa and Google Home. Teens want everything to be easy and quick and even now with so much technology and speed within their devices, they continue to complain about how their devices are still too slow. Nothing ever seems to be enough to suffice the needs of this generation. According to a recent article called “Technology in Our Life Today and How It Has Changed,” from Aging in Place, “Technology has revolutionized our world. Technology has created amazing tools and resources, putting useful information at their fingertips.” But in reality, are all of these advancements in technology even helpful or good for the future of our country? An easy example of this is when Freshman, Estefania Campos, was having a conversation with another student. They were speaking about how scary the new iPhone X is because of how it uses facial recognition in order to open the phone. They then suggested taking off facial recognition to free their worries and just use their password instead and Campos responded, “Well that takes too long.” Technology also has its cons. It prevents direct contact with the outside world and it teaches the new generation to do everything online and be dependent on the internet. A widely discussed topic is also the psychological toll that technology takes on individuals. According to a blog by Penn State’s SC200 class, they talked about scientific research and how a study showed the person’s brain thought patterns when being shown a broken phone, the brain reacts the same way as a clinically depressed man who needed help. The same blog talked about how “MNN did a study of seven different signs showing the controversy of why society is based around technology. A few of the signs included, “Without your phone, you feel naked, nobody knows a phone number, and if the internet is down, work is over for the day.” Society has integrated technology into every aspect of human life so we cannot live without it.” Technology also has a big effect on what kids nowadays think of as their priorities. For example, rather than working on a big project that they have due the next day, they go on their phone instead and one thing leads to another and it’s already 9 and then they end up staying up late finishing the project. Sophomore, Benjamin Carey even admitted to using technology a lot. However, he didn’t seem to see it as such a bad thing. When asked if he often uses technology, and why, Carey responded with, “I do use technology a lot but I don’t see it as a negative at all. I can use it to communicate with friends, have easy access in case of an emergency, and use it for entertainment purposes like Netflix or watching movies.” Benjamin, however, is one of the few exceptions. He manages to fit countless hours of swim practice, time for school-related activities and work, and even use a good bit of technology for disconnection from everything else. However, Junior, Lucas Jaramillo is not an exception. At home, Lucas told me, “Sometimes I can get backtracked just by looking at my phone and it seems like I’ll get on my phone at 7:48 for 5 minutes and when I look up, it’s already 8:30 and I have to stay up late finishing work.” Lucas thinks that technology is obviously a great resource but even he thinks it takes advantage of him sometimes. Technology is a great resource to the modern day; however, it has its extremes. People overuse it to the point where it is simply unhealthy and they prioritize it over more important things in their lives.

Life Will Go On by Olivia Martin - Johnson Morning dew on the leaves The start of a new day, a new dawn The sun coming out of the sky Welcoming life to the plants it serves Everything fresh and ready And life goes on The day gets warmer More stressful as the sun gets higher and higher Casting its loving warmth All is good, worries that help But life goes on Then, the sun decides its tired And starts coming down from the sky Which makes the plants tired too After a long hot day Wanting to rest, not wanting to bother But life goes on

The sun leaving, saying its last goodbye to the ocean Everyone tired, but awaiting another good day Where the sun shines and creates life But today is done And life will go on, the next day
