Shots The Diminutive Guide to a Little Big Drink By Erikka Haa 5 x 6, 160 pages, 4C, hardcover with concealed wire-o

The shot is the character actor of the drinking world: its appearances are brief but memorable. Surely a drink that is so versatile, from the classic tonic of old films to the decadent “body shot” of the modern bar scene, deserves a book of its own? Author Erikka Haa provides a capsule history for each shot, plus pouring instructions, drinking tips, variations, and a smattering of lore and legend. Color photos throughout showcase both the drinks and the barware they’ve immortalized. Erikka Haa is a writer and editor whose books include Electric Blues, Soul, and Boogie Nights: The Disco Age.

There’s a difference between a chocoholic and a chocophile, and Clay Gordon is decidedly in the latter category. It’s not enough for him to simply love this rich indulgence; he is equally addicted to the finer points of choosing it, just as a wine aficionado enjoys researching different varietals and developing a taste for particularly fine ones. In Discover Chocolate, Gordon provides a handy rating system, a field guide for distinguishing different types and styles of chocolates, an overview of how cacao becomes chocolate (including maps of where cacao is grown), advice for pairing chocolate and

Doofus and Darling’s Manners for the Modern Man A Handy Guide for Today’s Ambiguous Etiquette Situations By David Hoffman Illustrations by Marc Zingarelli 6 x 8, 96 pages, 2C, hardcover with PLC

Do you ever long for the simple moral rules of childhood? When your favorite children’s magazine laid out the principles of good and bad behavior so clearly? In any situation, you could learn from the responsible, considerate boy, while disdaining that other, more reprehensible fellow, whose selfish behavior, though occasionally tempting, obviously would not earn anyone’s approval. What a relief it was knowing right from wrong! But now, faced with the decidedly more complicated ethical situations of modern adult life, how do you know what to do? Turn to Doofus and Darling’s Manners for the Modern Man for the answers. Here, simply laid out and clearly illustrated, are the kinds of choices you have to make every day—only Doofus and Darling have made them already, and the consequences of their behavior are here for you to learn from.

David Hoffman is the author of Kid Stuff: Great Toys From Our Childhood and The Breakfast Cereal Gourmet. He minds his manners in Los Angeles. Marc Zingarelli is an illustrator whose work has appeared in the New Yorker, Details, Entertainment Weekly, Parenting, Men’s Fitness, and many other books and publications. * THIS BOOK IS A PARODY and has not been prepared, approved, or authorized by the creators or producers of the Highlights for Children magazine.

The Latest Craze Mass Hysterias, Bubbles, Delusions, and Fads By Jeff Fleischer 5 x7, 160 pages, 2C, hardcover with PLC

Greed, whimsy, fear, and madness—human history is full of examples of irrational mass behavior. From 1600’s Tulip Mania to the Tickle Me Elmo rush of the 1990s, we have lost our minds over railroads, dances, satellites, and electric fans. With more than sixty entries, The Latest Craze showcases the varieties of ways (past and present) in which we find ourselves following the crowd, including: • financial panics, bubbles, and crashes (Black Friday) • mass hysterias (the War of the Worlds broadcast) • moral panics (Salem Witch Trials) • fashion fads (parachute pants) • cultural manias (Beatlemania) • technological trends and fears (the Y2K bug)

Each entry offers a description of the conditions that

• beyond-our-control panics

caused the situation, examples of extreme behavior,

(12/12/12, aka the end of the world)

the peak of the hysteria, and the consequences (immediate and ultimate). Will we ever learn? Probably not, but it’s as entertaining as it is enlightening to see how the parade of absurdity continues to play out. Jeff Fleischer is a journalist who has written for numerous publications, including Mother Jones, University Wire, and the Sydney Morning Herald. He lives in Chicago, Illinois.

A Girl’s Guide to Retail Therapy Unleash the Healing Power of Shopping By Amy Elliott Illustrations by Robin Zingone 5 x 7, 160 pages, 2C, paperback

Every girl knows that shopping is one of life’s greatest pleasures. But did you know that it can actually improve your quality of life? In this practical, instructive guide, journalist Amy Elliott delves into the most common impulses to shop (are you bored? blue? envious? fat?) and offers the perfect retail therapy solution for each. First, find your shopping profile—a little selfknowledge goes a long way toward preventing buyer’s remorse. Next, discover when, how, and where to shop depending on your mood. For example, there are times when browsing without actually purchasing may do more to boost your mood than burning up your credit card with actual purchases. On the other hand, a bagful of goodies from the cosmetics emporium may significantly perk up your self-esteem.

Here are tips on how to budget for optimum retail therapy benefit; how to avoid the perils of bad dressing rooms and mirrors; how to cut short a shopping trip gone bad; and much more. Hands-on, useful advice and pro shopping tips make this guide a must-have for any girl who knows the immediate life improvement that can be achieved by getting a new pair of shoes. Amy Elliott’s passion for shopping is made possible by Condé Nast, where she serves as senior editor of Brides New York and 15 other editions of the company’s regional wedding magazines.

overview Companies sponsor contests as a way to promote their goods and services. Some sweepstakes require nothing more from entrants than sending in your name and address, while others solicit creative entries like recipes, poems, or slogans, or require you to write essays, answer trivia, or submit photos. For “sweepers” (those who enter sweepstakes as a hobby), the internet has opened up a whole new world of resources to mine, though many still use “snail-mail” (the U.S. Postal Service) as well. Without having to spend a dime, sweepers are enticed to participate in contests that sometimes offer unfathomably large sums of money or other expensive prizes. Some of the best-known ones are American Family Publishers Sweepstakes, Publishers Clearing House, and Reader’s Digest Sweepstakes, all of which hawk magazine subscriptions on the same form as the sweepstakes entries. Fast-food companies, food retailers, travel agencies, radio stations, newspapers, magazines, and any other entity that has a chance of nabbing a customer by offering prizes also sponsor sweepstakes.

getting started

FIRST, DO SOME RESEARCH to figure out what types of sweepstakes you’re interested in. Thousands of companies offer ways to win their goods or services, so it’s up to you to narrow down the vast array of choices. If you’ve got a knack for creating recipes, taking photos, or writing poetry, look for contests soliciting those types of entries. (See resources for websites and newsletters that publish sweepstakes details.)

WINNING SWEEPSTAKES TAKES PERSISTENCE, which requires time and energy. But there are shortcuts. If an automated form is available, for example, use it to save time. But if they ask for 3-by-5-inch index cards, be sure to stick to the rules—some companies immediately toss entries that don’t arrive in the proper form. And remember, the more difficult the entry process, the better your chances are of winning. Even a simple thing like requiring that you print your name in all capital letters or that you use an odd-size envelope or card deters some potential contestants from entering, so don’t be one of them.

IT’S EASY TO GET BURNED OUT if you’re entering too many contests at once. Pace yourself by entering a few every month throughout the year, rather than going through sweepstakes spurts. Don’t wait till the last minute to send in your forms—it would be a shame to be disqualified because your entry was late. If there is no maximum number of entries, it’s better to spread yours over the course of the sweepstakes timeline rather than send them in a huge group at the end. When there are a large number of entries and one is going to be picked from the heap, it’s better to have your cards distributed throughout the whole pile rather than be clumped together in one spot.

ONCE YOU’VE ENTERED, it’s just a matter of waiting for the news. Obviously, the more contests you enter, the higher your chance of winning. The most popular contests will have far smaller odds of winning. In fact, the odds of winning a sweepstakes, contest, or legal lottery are 400 million to 1 against winning a grand prize of $500,000. Read the fine print carefully if you want to calculate your odds.

history In Roman times, emperors commonly gave parting gifts to their guests as doorprize drawings, but Augustus Caesar was the first to conduct a public lottery as a means to raise money to make repairs to the public infrastructure in Rome. There’s also mention of a lottery in the Bible—a way for Moses to award land west of the Jordan River to the tribes of Israel. In modern times, the Irish Hospitals’ Sweepstakes in 1930 was the biggest of its kind; it was promoted internationally, reaching eager participants in the U.S. and Canada, which had abolished lotteries at the time. But by 1964, New Hampshire had created a state lottery, the first of its kind that was legal in the 20th century.

project: homemade envelopes and index cards for contest entries Using store-bought envelopes and index cards for entering contests can be expensive, especially since you aren’t guaranteed a win. Instead of buying new ones, try making your own; sweepstakes companies don’t care how your entries arrive, as long as they do. Old calendar pages make great envelopes because of the weight and broad size of the pages. Before you start cutting them up, first undo a standard envelope to use as a template. Cut the pages to match the size and shape of the standard envelope, then fold and fix the edges together with a glue stick. Shopping bags, construction paper, or heavyweight, glossy magazine pages make good envelopes, too. When it comes to the index cards, the main thing is to make sure the dimensions are right. Instead of wasting new index cards for contest entries, reuse your resources: Write on the backs of old, blurry photos that you were going to toss anyway and send them in. You can also cut birthday and holiday cards you’ve received down to the right size.
