Photographer’s Interpretations Mood & Atmoshphere Photoshoot people sewing and stitch

I choose a digital photoshoot because i feel this is the easiest way to adjust and change lighting to create a mood. it also gives me alot of choice to how i edit my photos, i can print them and manualy edit in the dark room or with stitch or i can digitaly edit on bridge or photoshop. it is also an oraganised and clear way ofkeeping my work together, it works best for me.

Answers: 1: The photograph makes me feel sorry for the subject, he seems young yet trapped behind these bars. His surroundings dont seem atall luxurious and he seems, in his facial expresion, disapointed yet also angry contributing to my pitty. Its as if the subject has a huge story behind him and is now traped in this photograph, as if he’s faced injustice and is helpless. This makes me inquisitive to his story and situation. 2: I dont desire the enviroment as it seems sorrowful and traped, yet i wish i knew the feelings and contents behind it, the image brings questions and has very few answers. I do however wish to know the model/subjects feelings. This is probably due to the model’s facial expresions and the limited background, not being able to see much. 3: I admire the photographer because she has managed to capture feelings, questions, conflict all in one simple photograph. The lighting set up and subject are all perfect and well ballanced. 4: Its a strong photograph that has made me feel and think, there isnt so much adventure as there is a veryy limited view to the picture. Due to the positioning of the shot it limits the adventure, but this is also a hiden message. 5: I wouldn’t change alot about the photo because i feel its really simple and effective. The only other thing the photographer could do is make a series of photographs and maybe get the subject/model to write something about them and their situation. 6: A- I see a young and helpless face, a history and regrets within the model and his enviroment. B- I feel as id i want to help the model but am also weary of the situation he is in. C- I notice the expresion on the young boys face, he seems full of regret and helpless. D- I observe the bars and aknowlage the subject looks as if hes behind bars rather than infront of them. E- I think the photographer has captured a moment of suden realisation, the boy seems regretful and sad, he seems lost and almost lonley. I think its a view into the other life of young prisoners and their real feelings. 7: I would like to visit the location to take my own photos but also to give the people in this situation a say in what was happened, maybe a chance to give them a voice. However i wouldnt want to be part of the location as it seems dark dismal and lonely. 8: I recal the boys hopeless face and the look in his eyes, i also recal his suroundings of the rusting cell and the cold brick walls. I remeber the tattoo on his right arm that seems significant as its the only visable one, also his ear peircing in one ear. 9: Yes- because although it seems simple and flat the picture actually has alot of detailed and hidden messages, it needs to be thought about in order to be appreciated. 10: The way the subject is stood and staring the phtograph looks set up yes, but this doesn’t make it any less effective. Its probably set up to make sure the photographer has the perfect image, Lucinda Chua seems to be very specific and clean with her photography. She seems to take time setting up a photo in order to exicute it properly. 11: You can read alot about the photographer as i just said Lucinda Chua seems to be very specific and clean with her photography, she seems to take time setting up a photo in order to exicute it properly. You can see her style within the photograph and her ambition to convey a message. 12: I cant bring alot to the photograph other than experience i have had with people who have been prosocuted, some have made huge mistakes and instantly regreted them, maybe this is where the sympathy to the subject i have comes from.

Artist Research Tomoaki Ishihara Lucinda Chua

The photographer Tomoaki Ishihara takes images of himself in front of famous land marks and historical paintings, but the face of the artist is always blurred whilst the photo/object behind is in focus. This is inspiring me to focus on one element in the photograph, such as blurring the background and focusing on just the person or vice versa. Lucinda Chua is also someone I have researched and discovered her style of photograph, most of her photos are dimly lit but really well lit at the same time. Lucinda uses a simple setting but interesting models or props to set a mood. Both will influence my work equaly. Page 10

Photoshoot bassed on Lucinda Chua and Tomoaki Ishihara

By editing i realised i could create an atmosphere through colour, cold or warming atmospheres. These come in handy because you can manipulate a scene and make a model seem relaxed, alone, cold, warm just through colour and many different options. Props and surroundings are also very helpful, they can either distract and confuse a viewer or tie the whole picture together, props can make sense of a setting and scenes can change a model and their whole expressions. Likewise so can a models body positioning, they can seem scared, relaxed, confident or anything else.

Using two colour contrasting photos inside of each other is interesting because each is a very different setting as well as colour, they work well together and make the viewer think.

Block colours work really well with the black and white because they can emphasize or hide certain bits of the photograph, it can distract the viewer and make their eyes travel as well as creating layers in the photograph. The red colour overlay is a nice effect because it enhances the colours and lighting within the photo without adjusting the quality or clarity of the photo.

This Is one of my favourite edits due to its simplicity and yet it’s so effective. It also work’s so well in a manual edit.

Using manual and digital manipulation to come up with the same edit as so I can compare them to one another.

Combining manual and digital edits to form a mood board of ideas from my photo-shoot.

Page 27

Manual Editing&Conclusion: Using paint, pens and cutting.

Using manual editing skills i re created my digital edits to see how they would compare, i like the effect it had because its textual and no quite perfect which gives the viewer of the work something the think about. Page 28

The two photo-shoot’s I did based on the two artists gave me a vague idea on how and what I want to do with my final piece, it made me realise how important lighting is and how it can affect not only the atmosphere but the mood of the face and model too. This is something I feel is important and would like to use more to my advantage, so in my next shoot I will base it on my control of lighting and emphasising things through lighting.

Photoshoot Mood & Atmosphere

By researching artists such as Lucinda Chua it’s made me focus more on the lighting aspect of my images, looking at technical adjustments to set scenes and models within a photograph. This has taught me to look at a photo in a different way in a more technical way and also to appreciate a good photograph when i take or see one. This photo shoot was based on a lighter feel and more personal to me as a photographer. Page 30

By taking few but good quality photos I am building an understanding of the photos I would like to use in my final piece, these photos will be hugely influenced by light in order to change their mood and atmosphere. Moving lighting around the face in order to manipulate it is something I am experimenting with, focusing on body shape and how it is effected by light is also something I’m looking to explore. I’m going to be using models who have texture and a different surface to their face, so older people who have evidence of living, for example wrinkles, scars or other features.

Posible Ideas:

Manually and digitally i could do a wash of ink over the face or body of the person in order to create a hidden mood through colour or shape.

Page 40

The dark swipe of ink across the image hides the model and makes them more mysterious, therefore the viewer looks deeper into the photo and begins to interoperate it in their own way.

Here i have experimented with acetate and ink, to see how both of them will work and fit within the theme of my project. i am also going to experiment on glass but will have to be more prepared to have the equipment ready. i was also un able to find adequate glass inks to use in my final piece.
