LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

The world around us is always changing. Society adapts new ideas and tosses out aged ones. Missouri changed its laws on safety in schools (pg 4). Sometimes people’s surroundings change and they are given the chance to try new things, even travel the world like Riley Nelson (pg 8). People can change themselves and the way they feel in their own bodies by stepping up their workouts with an at-home ab circuit (pg 14). A big change that the entire world is a part of is the changing views on feminism and gender equality by the #HeForShe campaign, spearheaded by celebrities like Emma Watson (pg 21). No matter what changes have to be faced, it is human nature to adapt to surroundings and strive for a better world.

“Domestic violence is wrong. A man should never put his hands on a women,” said Kaleb Kote, junior. Domestic violence is a hot topic in today’s society and recently in the National Football League. There has been an overwhelming amount of domestic violence accusations in the past months. Two of the biggest stories of violence in the NFL have came from star running backs Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson. Adrian Peterson was arrested on charges of beating his son with a switch. He was released on $15,000 bail in Houston and cannot play until his trial is resolved, according to NBC Sports. “They’re sending the wrong message to people, saying it’s acceptable,” said Jill Hazell, social worker. Ray Rice was originally suspended two games by the NFL for accusations of beating his fiance and dragging her out of an elevator. Once the actual video was released, Rice was cut by the Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the league. The controversy in the league came from only suspending Rice two games before the issue and saying they did not see the video when other sources said they had. “Ray Rice should be reinstated because Goodell knew what was gonna be on that video. Rice knew what he did was wrong and he is looking to move on from it,” said Kote. After the Rice incident the

league introduced new domestic violence policies with longer bans and harsher punishments for players. “I think the change of rules for domestic violence is fair punishment. Everyone deserves a second chance,” said Kote. These issues are not only happening in the NFL though; they even happen here at South. “There’s a lot of families impacted by it, but it goes unnoticed so it’s hard to tell if we have a problem here at South,” said Hazell. As Social Worker at South, Hazell deals with problems like these and many others on a daily basis. “We can prevent it by learning about signs and keeping open communication with people,” said Hazell. Another group that deals with these kind of issues is Natural Helpers, where students can come to other students with problems and for help. “Most our issues are about drugs and alcohol and peer pressure. But we have a domestic violence issue every once in a while though,” said Natural Helper Donna Shabazi, junior. As the intense issue of domestic violence continues to grow through the NFL, the nation, and even South, there is hope to take actions and diminish it, and hopefully get rid of domestic violence for good.

HIDE An inside look at South’s teachers being able to have a concealed weapon or firearm, and student opinions on the topic by DESTINY ROGERS

Sandy Hook Elementary shooting was the biggest school shooting in recent history by impacting more than the 26 families left behind. From the East coast to the West coast schools are making big changes to make sure nothing like this happens again. “Each school district and charter school may train teachers and school employees on how to respond to students with information about a threatening situation and how to address a potentially dangerous or armed intruder or active shooter in the school or on school property,” Senate Bill 75 states. The real question is, how does this affect South? Over the summer, all teachers at South had to take a safety course. The safety course taught teachers to secure their doors, what to do if an armed intruder came in, and review of the safety regulations already in place. It was not about arming themselves. “Teachers having guns would be safer, but they are not properly trained, therefore mistakes can be made,”says Officer Matt Westrich. Should teachers be able to have a concealed weapon? Jim Irvine, a firearms trainer in Ohio, does seem to think so. “The community feels over all that their kids are safer in the district this school year,” he said to

the New York Times. “Missouri residents will be able to walk around openly showing their guns,”according to the New York Times. Is it just the streets in Missouri? As well as in Ohio, certain Missouri teachers can also carry a concealed weapon. “There’s room for error and wrong judgement on the teachers end. What would happen then?” says Linda Goss, one of South’s security officers. “Park Hill School district has yet to take a stance,” says Adrian Singletary, social studies teacher. With all the new laws passing in Missouri, Park Hill School District is just one tiny part . South is still undecided, and students aren’t too convinced on the idea of teachers being able to carry a weapon. “No I wouldn't, because anyone can do anything with a gun. I wouldn't feel safe at all; schools need no guns at all,” said D'Andre Cook, sophomore. These ‘changes’ have been no where near sudden. Since Goss has been at South, she said they didn’t have cameras, escorts or a card system. Though the changes are not always noticed, Park Hill School District is making every effort to advance South’s safety.

ISIS

NEWS FEAT OPIN SPORT

by HOPE MAYO

A look at who and what ISIS is What would you do if you lived in constant fear? For those in Syria and Iraq, this constant fear has become a reality. Where is this terror coming from? ISIS. Some may ask, what exactly is ISIS? Gabrielle Griffith, a senior, guesses that ISIS is, “the group of people that keep on capturing people and beheading them.” “ISIS is a huge group of terrorists stationed in Iraq,” said Erin McDaniel, senior. “ISIS is a terrorist regime,” said Kyle Sims, junior. These are all good answers but there is a lot more to ISIS than people know. Jared Gould, senior, elaborates. “It’s a group of radical Muslims who are seeking to form their own caliphate, a government state where all their laws are based on a strict interpretation of Sharia law. They go about this by killing and torturing anyone who doesn’t obey them,” he said. For those who are unaware, ISIS stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The main goal of this terrorist group is to turn the Sunni areas of Syria and Iraq into an Islamic state. According to CNN, ways that the group is going about this takeover are through: robbery and extortion, large-scale attacks meant to gain territory, killing multiple people at a time and carrying out public executions. On August 19, 2014 a US journalist named James Foley, missing in Syria since 2012, appeared in a Youtube video released by ISIS militants. During this Youtube video, the militants decapitated Foley and threatened to do the same to another captured US journalist. Shortly after, on Sept. 2, 2014, ISIS released another video that showed militants beheading their second captured US

journalist, Steven Sotloff. “I think that ISIS could have made a statement in a different way, rather than beheading people,” said Jaylen Randle, junior. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS is named by his followers as, AlKhalifah Ibrahim. ISIS started as an al Qaeda splinter group. The CIA announced on Sept. 11 that ISIS now has anywhere between 20,000 and 31,500 fighters across Iraq and Syria. Middle East expert, Fawaz Gerges, told CNN that ISIS fighters are mainly former Iraqi soldiers, unable to serve under new Iraq government due to Saddam Hussein’s disbanded military. Many are left wondering, where does the United States come into action? People question if the United States should get involved in stopping ISIS. “The United States should get involved in fighting against ISIS if we don’t want Iraq to fall,” said Andy Keefer, current events. McDaniel agrees that the United States should assist in stopping ISIS but thinks that the U.S. should not fight in Iraq, in fear of another war. American airstrikes have been released on ISIS targets in Syria but U.S. troops have yet to engage in direct combat. During Obama’s address to this issue he said, “I won’t commit our troops to fighting another ground war in Iraq, or in Syria. It’s more effective to use our capabilities to help partners on the ground secure their own country’s futures.” ISIS has grown in power and size and it is unknown when the group will be stopped, however, actions are being taken to end the terror. Only time will tell to see the outcomes of our nation’s actions upon today’s biggest threat, ISIS.

At first, her parents influenced most of her love for traveling, but over time, Nelson has developed an interest of her own. “My parents got me into it at a young age,” said Nelson. “Australia was the first trip I took on my own.” Last spring, Nelson spent three weeks in Australia. the rise of

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS These drugs are becoming more popular and more dangerous

To abuse drugs can be dangerous. To abuse prescription drugs can have even worse effects. Two prescription drugs in particular have been sweeping schools across the nation and can be harmful and possibly life threatening. The first drug is Vicodin, a drug that acts as a pain reliever. It can mimic the effects of heroin and just like heroin can be very addictive. Around 2 million people in the United States are addicted to Vicodin, according to Rehab International’s website. Vicodin has become an abused drug because of the drowsy effect it has. It has become popular also because it is cheaper than heroin. “If a person takes any kind of drug not given a prescription for then it can have adverse effects on them,” said Officer Matt Westrich, SRO. Vicodin can be fatal if one overdoses on it. Overdose of the substance can also lead to liver

problems and risk liver failure. Vicodin is also very dangerous when combined with other drugs or alcohol. The other drug is Vyvanse. “Vyvanse helps me to focus, not only on my school work but everyday activities like driving,” said Chandler Adams, senior. Vyvanse is a stimulant that helps people with ADD or ADHD. It can help make it easier to concentrate for whoever is taking it. “For someone who doesn’t need Vyvanse it can cause rapid heart rate, tons of energy and make the user jittery,” said Kathy Cole, South nurse. Vyvanse can make the user feel very awake and as if they do not need any sleep. It can have very serious negative effects on people taking the drug without being diagnosed it by a doctor. “If you have an unknown heart problem Vyvanse can be unsafe and in most cases cause death,”

said Cole. This year, there has been only one incident of distribution of Vicodin, according to Westrich. Drug abuse is not only dangerous for a person’s health, but is also not allowed at school. Students in possession will be expelled from school. Drug distribution is a Class B felony and is punishable by up to a potential seven years in prison. “School is a place for learning, not for drugs,” said Westrich. Riverside has obtained a pharmaceutical dropbox to encourage people to discard unused narcotics instead of putting in trash or down toilet. This is a safe, environmentally friendly way of getting rid of drugs. People can report any drug distribution or possession by texting panthers to CRIMES.

STORIES OF SOUTH FACULTY AND STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN

AFFECTED BY THE BIG C by EMMA EHLERS

12

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them,” said Maya Angelou. Students and faculty that have been affected by cancer know this to be true. Some faculty and students at South have either lived through the fight of cancer or supported a family member who has beat the disease. Dr. Lora Ackerman, Communication Arts, was diagnosed with Differentiated Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, commonly known as breast cancer, in February of 2007. Dr. Ackerman struggled a lot while she was going through treatment. “I had surgeries and chemotherapy and then some serious neurological complications resulting from the chemotherapy,” said Dr. Ackerman. Eight months after her own diagnoses, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer as well. Although this was a tough time for Ackerman, she was able to persevere and create a new outlook on life. “Having this in my background has changed me in many ways,” said Dr. Ackerman. “I find it easier to rise above things and seek a better understanding and acceptance of things than I did prior to the illness.” She felt the need to give back the kindness shown to her during her own struggle. Dr. Ackerman is now a speaker and a volunteer for the Kansas City affiliate of the Komen for the Cure organization. She also has participated in the Komen for the Cure three- day walk and raised $78,000 for the organization. Lowell Messer, Communication Arts, and Marcy Messer, Communication Arts, have also been affected by cancer. Their son was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor. According to mayoclinic.com, this is called nephroblastoma, a rare kidney cancer that primarily affects children. The disease lowers the immune system so it is very easy to get infections. Having a child with a rare disease really taught Mr. Messer more about life. “Don’t take anything for granted,” said Messer. Mrs. Messer said that the school district, family and friends were really supportive the entire time.

At the time, Pam Jurgensmeyer was one of the many teachers who supported the Messer family. She was a part of a “social committee” made up of several South faculty. “I remember making chocolate chip cookies for Mr. and Mrs. Messer’s son. Soon after I delivered them to him, I received an email that their son believed he was beating the cancer because of the cookies,” said Jurgensmeyer. Their son is now doing much better and his immune system has drastically improved allowing him to enjoy time with friends. Another family in the South community has been affected by cancer. Kim Toigo, wife of Joe Toigo, business, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2013. While his wife was undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments, Toigo spent less time at South so he could have more time to help out his wife and daughter, Mia, at home. “[I wanted to] make sure Mia still felt important because she was no longer the number one priority in the family,” said Toigo. Toigo focused on making sure Mia understood that cancer was a survivable disease and her mother could live through this tough time. The soccer game played in Mrs. Toigo’s, and Park Hill senior Nick Hibbler’s, honor last year showed a lot of support that Toigo said he was proud to see. Support from others is very important to cancer patients. Collins Beatty, junior, knows a little bit about what it means to support cancer patients and survivors. He was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, which is a brain tumor, in October of 2001. “It was hard because the treatments caused me to lose my hearing and it damaged my cerebellum,” said Beatty. Yearly, Beatty goes to a summer camp to mentor kids who have had medulloblastoma and his family volunteers at Children’s Mercy. Also as a family, they participate in a motorcycle ride that raises money for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. South has and always will be a supportive community and even though these students and faculty were not able to control the events that happened to them, they decided to not be reduced by them.

“HAVING THIS IN MY BACKGROUND HAS CHANGED ME IN MANY WAYS.”

2014 NFL SUSPENSIONS

suspensions

A look at how NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has affected the game America loves, and whether or not he should step down Should he stay or should he Go(odell)? The question everyone has been asking: should NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell continue as commissioner or step down from his job in the most popular sports league in America? The NFL is getting less and less enjoyable for fans. Flags every single play, suspensions every single week; the madness just seems like it doesn’t stop. And who is the reason for all this? Good ole Goodell. Many have asked him to step down as commissioner because of the Ray Rice scandal. Goodell was criticized because he only gave a two game suspension to Rice even though sources said that he’d been given the tape from inside the elevator. Goodell should step down or be fired, period. Not only for the Ray Rice scandal, but for all the crap he implanted into the league making the fan experience less than great. Also for the way he has handled suspensions over the last year. You’re going to tell me that a guy who gets caught smoking weed should get a year long suspension, but a guy who knocks out his wife and drags her out of an elevator should just get suspended for only two games? He needs to get his head out of the gutter and think about what really matters. Yeah, I can see players getting

by the numbers

in a little trouble for performance enhancing drugs, but getting in trouble for smoking pot shouldn’t even compare to domestic violence issues at all. Not only does he suspend half the dang league, but he also will give penalties for about anything you can think of. Let the players play the game. Instead of watching quality football now, we are watching an hour of refs huddling up and throwing flags and a few minutes of the quarterback actually throwing the football. The only thing just as good as seeing a touchdown is seeing the touchdown dance or celebration. We get to see the player show off, break out some moves, and actually celebrate. Goodell took most of that away from us as well. Now the players get flagged for about anything more than a salute to the crowd. I don’t know about you but I’d rather see Jimmy Graham dunk on a goal post then shoot free throws over one. And honestly I don’t see it getting any better from here, most likely he will imply some crappy new rules and throw out some stupid suspensions over the coming years. This not only is going to affect your fantasy football team but also the game we all grew up loving. It’s time to say no, Goodell.

TRIUMPH over the TROJANS by ALEX ROTHERS Athletes, coaches and fans reflect on what keeps the rivalry with Park Hill alive

The biggest game of the season, what most sports countdown the days to, what some may say defines the success of the season. The day South gets to play Park Hill. Why is this game so important? What makes it so much more special than playing other schools? Why do Park Hill South students want to beat Park Hill at everything we do? “It’s about bragging rights. We compete in everything we do; sports, academics, and debate,” says Coach Carr, athletic director. A rivalry is defined as a competition for superiority on the same field. However, when talking about the rivalry with Park Hill, many athletes at South can’t help but focus on the feelings of pressure and nerves. Each sports team at South is going to care about beating every single school they play, but the rest of the school only cares about the outcome of the Park Hill game. This adds much more pressure for athletes. Playing Park Hill has different meanings for different sports. As long as South has existed, the volleyball team has never lost to Park Hill. “I feel like the rivalry is getting more and more competitive. Park Hill wants to beat us more each time they play us, since

[

they never have. But we always show we want it more and we won’t accept losing.” says Allison Sadler, sophomore. The soccer rivalry is one sport that is much more competitive than friendly. “No matter how our seasons are going, it’s always a good competitive game,” said Matt Breen, senior. Until the year 1998, Park Hill South did not even exist, there was only Park Hill. The moment this school was created, a rivalry was born. Coach Carr believes that the rivalry has had the same amount of prominence ever since it began. Both teams desperately want to beat each other, and best efforts are always given. “With our rivalry, it doesn’t matter what the teams records are, they are going to come out and play hard,” said Carr. When any sport plays their rival, one team goes home heartbroken, while the other goes home celebrating. Win or lose on the night of Park Hill, the overall rivalry and competitiveness never goes away. After a big win, South’s pride soars. Coming off a loss, the desire to win the next time is what keeps this rivalry going.

“IT’S ABOUT BRAGGING RIGHTS.”

>>DISTRICTS CROSS COUNTRY MEET IS OCTOBER 25TH

A look at how Cross Country’s team bonding has improved their performance

by ADELE ROYLE

Run For Your Life

Who better to play a game of speed and intensity than the Park Hill South Cross Country team? As a way of team bonding the captains of the team created the idea to play a friendly game... of assassin. For those who may not know, assassin is a game in which you get assigned to “assassinate” someone with a water gun. Once you “assassinate” the person you are assigned, you get whomever that person was assigned to and so on. You cannot “assassinate” someone at work, church, or any school function. The game has no official affiliation with the school or Cross Country program--it was just an idea some of the runners came up with after the school-wide assassin game last fall was so successful. Senior Matthew Robbins was tricked by his teammates when they told him something was in his mailbox for him, when in reality Claire Butcher, junior, was waiting right outside to “attack.” Although these tricks were good, apparently there is one “killer” that’s better than the rest. Many of her teammates are calling junior, Charlie McFarlane the “murderer,” and are convinced she is going to win. “She ‘killed’ around four people in just two days,” said Butcher. Besides all the fun they are having, the team is also growing closer to each other. “You have to know everything about the person you have because you’re basically stalking them, so in the end you get to know the person better,” says senior, Erica Guzman. On a team with both girls and guys, it is easy to be split up by gender, but this year McFarlane said that the two teams have been closer this year than any of the previous years she has done Cross Country. It seems as if the bonding they have done outside of meets has shown up during competition. “My coach told me that this is the fastest team she has ever coached,” said McFarlane. So far the Cross Country team placed first at Districts in girls and third overall in boys. The Varsity team’s goal is to make it all the way to State. “We want to send a full team to state and if not then just as many runners as we can,” said McFarlane. Through team bonding and intense training, the Cross Country team is prepared to take on whatever attacks them, on and off the trails.

Positive spirits lead girls’ tennis to many accomplishments in the past 30 days

FLIPPING THE STANDARDS You could say the 2014 Park Hill South boys soccer team has fought through adversity this season. From graduating a key senior class in the last two years and having to move on with a young team for this season, most people doubted them. However, throughout this season they have flipped the standard for young teams struggling and having to go through a rebuilding year... and put together so far one of the best seasons that South soccer has had in a while. “I was not that surprised on how this season has gone, so far. We established season goals and we worked all off season and continued working during the season to fulfill them,” said junior team captain Seth Hudson. What exactly are these team goals they established, you might ask. “State. That is our goal. We will not settle for anything less. We established it early on before the season and we worked and will continue working on the field in order to achieve it. We owe it to the seniors for all they have done and been

Party at the net this previous month. Such a short season comes with its advantages and disadvantages. The pressure of only 30 days to compete can be overwhelming for players. “It has been kind of crazy, because we have had up to four matches a week,” said Chandler Hedrick, sophomore. The girls’ schedule has been hectic, though they persevered with positive spirits. “We have our matches all in a row, so practice is a lot like our matches,” said Adele Royle, senior. “When we do have practices we have to stay focused, but when we play our matches we have to stay positive.” The girls’ hard work has shown. Some of their very best matches were against Staley and Blue Springs, resulting in a score of 9-0 for both. Even better was winning 8-1 against their rival, Park Hill. “We were all really happy about it. Let’s go South! It was a friendly rivalry, nice to beat Park Hill as usual,” said Royle. The JV girls have won every match they have been involved in this season. Team captain, Royle, shared her thoughts on JV overall. “I have never been so proud of our JV team before, yes they are on JV, but many are very talented. It shows in their performances,” said Royle. The team spirit for girls’ tennis this year truly shines when hearing from others individually and their positive outlook on the team as a whole. “It has been one of the better years for girls’ tennis... pretty cohesive, they work together, they are starting to support each other. All those are good things,” said Ian Cunliff, tennis coach. Their season has almost come to an end, but the best is yet to come. The team placed first at Districts and Royle qualified to compete at State, which starts today.

Aganist the odds, boys’ soccer has had a successful season

through for this team, it’s the least we can do,” said Tyler Pisoni, sophomore. Obviously high expectations are expected by the team and it does not look to disappoint any of the players, coaches, or the fans. With a strong sophomore class stepping up to the standards for this season, who knows what it will be like for the boys in years to come. “I feel like it was a nice surprise to all of us. We knew that this season might have been rough, purely because of the lack of experience and age throughout the team, but we’re proud of our boys. They have proved us wrong,” said Eli Moss, junior. This South squad has the full support from everyone around them that is for sure. The next game the boys are going to be suiting up for is against Park Hill on October 22 at 6:30 p.m. up on the turf at South. Everyone go out and support the boys on continuing their successful season even more.

TAKE 3 spooky series

Halloween is right around the corner and with that comes all things creepy. Fall shows always have a frightening factor to them. Three shows that come to my mind are the Vampire Diaries, American Horror Story, and Castle. These shows are all very different and scary in their by BRADY SMITH own way.

American Horror Story: Freakshow “American Horror Story” is the epiphany of all things creepy crawly. If this show doesn’t keep you up at night, then I don’t know what will. Each season is a different storyline with the same cast playing different roles so we don’t know what to expect for season four. This newest season is called Freak Show and takes place at a carnival with wacky characters that include a bearded lady, the world’s smallest woman, and a two-headed girl. When watching “American Horror Story”, you have to go in without expectations because it gets wild. I personally thought that the premiere was a little much for my taste. There was so much going on that it almost made it hectic. There was a murderous clown throughout the story along with the stories happening in the Freak Show. It got to the point where it got too weird to relate to. The story

Castle

“Castle” is a show where a famous author, Richard Castle, fulfills his dream of living out his murder mystery books by tagging along with the NYPD’s finest homicide investigator, Kate Beckett. At first, Beckett despised Castle and his ego but as the six seasons have rolled by, Castle and Beckett planned their wedding in the last season. The finale ended at Castle driving to the Hampton’s for the wedding and someone purposely crashing his car and it catching on fire. Castle never fails to leave us hanging. In the beginning of the new season, Beckett just stares at the burning car in despair. The wedding is then, of course, called off and Beckett does what she does best, she investigates.

The Vampire Diaries

20

This show is something interesting and new. The show starts out with a group of law students in the woods trying to figure out what to do with the body they just killed. Then, it flashes back to them all being in a class called ‘How To Get Away With Murder.’ This plot has many twists and turns involved. It will be a show that will be sure to keep you on your toes.

HAPPYLAND

The viewers have waited six seasons for this wedding, so I was a little hurt when it didn’t go through. However, the plot twist kept me on my toes. Castle was found in a boat in the middle of the ocean. The NYPD found footage of Castle walking around during the two months he was missing but he doesn’t remember anything. I hope that they don’t drop this issue like they do with some points That is the only downfall about Castle. They often leave things unanswered. I can tell that this season of Castle has potential to be the best one yet, but it’s up to them to do so. I rate Castle 3 stars because of this.

Elena at college and Stefan working at an auto shop. I didn’t like this plot twist, but I don’t think anyone did. You would think that after Damon died, the most important person in Stefan and Elena’s lives, that they would have stuck together. The fact that the deaths pulled the other characters apart breaks my heart. I would have hoped that the curious bunch would be desperate to find a way to bring their friends back but I was disappointed. We find out that Elena is the mysterious vampire murderer. The mixture of the potions and Damon makes her go off the rails. At the very end of the episode, it shows a short clip of Damon and Bonnie eating breakfast in a cabin. This gives the viewers hope that they will be coming back. However, it leaves us hanging, curiously more than ever. I rate the “Vampire Diaries” 4 stars because it has something for everyone and is perfect for a frightening October.

Happyland is about a group of people that work and live in an amusement park together. Although on stage their lives are a fairy tale, there is a lot of drama that goes on behind the scenes. If you are a fan of goofy, dramatic shows like Awkward, you will love Happyland.

MANHATTEN LOVE STORY

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER

“The Vampire Diaries” has been on since 2009 and has carried many fans with them through now six full seasons. It is a perfect mixture of action, love, and fright. The fifth season left us hanging when Damon and Bonnie went into the light after the other side was demolished. We then had to wait all summer for the premiere this October. The sixth season’s excitement lives up to the fifth. The first episode opens with a spooky scene where two kids camping get murdered by a mysterious vampire. After all the drama of season five, Mystic Falls put up a spell to cast all the supernatural out. This is why these mysterious murders have bee happening to anyone on the outside border of Mystic Falls. The show then skips to showing where everyone has picked up on their lives a few months after Bonnie and Damon died. It shows

became so unrealistic. It’s always scarier when what’s going on could actually happen to you. If I were to rate these stories on what is the scariest, “American Horror Story” would take the cake. This season they have strayed away from the paranormal stuff and gone gory. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t miss how “American Horror Story” was in season one. Back in season one, they focused on the drama-filled plot that pulled all of us viewers into the story. This season, I feel like it they have changed their objective. The point was just to scare you and they succeeded. However, all the different stories didn’t relate well and they didn’t tie them altogether like they normally do. I gave “American Horror Story” 3 stars because even though it was horrifying, they could have made the plot more intriguing.

If you are looking for a short, fun show to watch this fall, look no further. Manhattan Love Story is about a girl that just moved to New York is her friend sets her up on a blind date that goes terribly wrong. It’s a cute 30 minute show that’s perfect for the romantics.

MANY PEOPLE IN OUR SCHOOL WON’T READ THIS ARTICLE. THEY MIGHT THINK THAT FEMINISM DOESN’T APPLY TO THEM. BUT WHY SHOULD THEY CARE ABOUT IT?

SOCIETY’S VIEW OF FEMINISM

EDITORIAL

Kids our age might not realize that it is everyone’s problem, and that more people are needed to play an active role in supporting feminism and in educating this generation on what it is all about. Feminism, by definition, is the equality of all persons. Today’s society has created a new meaning of the word and the true meaning has been filtered and changed to seem like it something that men can’t support. Emma Watson has taken initiative to tear down that stereotype. She spoke in front of the UN on Sept. 20 and launched the HeForShe campaign, which encourages men to join the voices of many women across the world. But what about us? How does our generation play a role in this big issue? Well, it breaks down into many issues. They may not seem like a big deal, but they have a deeper level of importance that many can not comprehend. A girl showing her shoulders, a guy sagging his pants, shorts that are deemed “too short”... These ideas are drilled into student bodies across the nation, making everyone believe that it’s okay for other to tell them how to dress or act. It’s not.

Every person has been granted the liberties of free will, and just because we attend school doesn’t mean that those basic rights should disappear because administration feels that “it isn’t what school is supposed to be about” or that “some male students could be distracted by the way girls dress”. Equality should be spread everywhere, and not just fade as we walk into the doors of our schools; equality should be taught in every aspect possible, and no argument can knock down the idea that everyone’s mind should be open to the philosophy of feminism and equal gender rights. The entire purpose of the HeForShe campaign is to bring awareness to the issue of feminism, and to promote the same rights for women that men have come to expect and think they deserve. Many more steps should be taken to educate the youth of today on the issue of gender equality, starting in schools. Our school has speakers every year, so why not start there, in educating the entire student body on the HeForShe campaign and then we can begin to enact change and support gender equality where we can.

“ FIGHTING FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS HAS OFTEN BECOME SYNONYMOUS WITH MAN-HATING. IF THERE IS ONE THING I KNOW FOR CERTAIN, IT IS THAT THIS HAS TO STOP.” -EMMA WATSON >>IT’S TIME THAT WE SEE GENDER AS A SPECTRUM INSTEAD OF TWO SETS OF OPPOSING IDEALS.” -EMMA WATSON

NEWS FEAT OPIN SPORT Gone Girl is an exciting thriller with good performances and one fatal flaw Imagine you come home one day and you discover that your significant other is missing. Picture frames are knocked over, glass is shattered and there is blood by the fireplace. Panic is the first thought, and you have a bunch of ideas running through your mind. This is the basis for the film, “Gone Girl”, a thriller directed by David Fincher. Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, the husband of Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike). He comes home and has the same experience that I described earlier. And so the story begins of Nick and Amy’s complicated love affair and marriage. We go through a series of flashbacks and present day sequences as we learn more about the disappearance and their marriage. The movie is excellent during these scenes, led by a cast that does a good job of portraying a vast array of people. The supporting cast includes Tyler Perry as Nick’s lawyer, Carrie Coon as Nick’s sister, Neil Patrick Harris as Amy’s former boyfriend, and Kim Dickens as the detective in charge of the

investigation. The characters they portray seem authentic. Perry is especially good as Tanner Bolt, who makes his character interesting by adding a mix of hilarity and protectiveness. Affleck and Pike are exceptional as they experience the highs and lows of being a happily (or not) married couple. Where the film struggled for me was the ending. Everything was extremely exciting and dramatic up until that point. I’m pretty sure I yelled “WHAT???” as the credits rolled. It was extremely frustrating because the movie had been fantastic up until that point. My only other flaw is that the movie runs 25 minutes too long at 150 minutes. That’s a long time to be sitting there, but I was entertained for most of it. Had the ending not left me wanting something entirely different, “Gone Girl” would have been a near flawless movie. Although it has an awesome cast, and a fresh and interesting story, I can’t get over how Fincher-and author Gillian Flynn-left it.

FLIPSIDE:Breakups The good, the bad and the ugly

I

t is almost a given that girls are more emotional than guys. It’s not that guys don’t have feelings, it is just that we like to make sure everyone knows about how we are feeling. Especially when we are going through a breakup. There are the nonchalant girls; these girls are the ones who say “We can still be friends” and the ones that were more like one of “the guys” while you were dating. Of course there were times when she was definitely your female partner, but overall she was really laid-back about everything and wasn’t very picky or expressive about what she wanted to do--a pushover. They will definitely be feeling something when you guys officially call it quits, but will she be feeling upset about not being with you anymore or will she be excited for being able to have a night with just her and her dog? Then there are the girls that act like they are getting murdered. She will say things like “OH MY GOD WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITHOUT HIM?” or “I DON’T EVEN WANT TO LIVE ANYMORE.” Usually these are really dramatic ladies who over exaggerate about everything. I think it is safe to say that you WILL survive without him, you WILL be okay, and you WILL be

able to move on, eventually. Just take a chill pill and wait. But you can’t forget about the girls who spend every second obsessing over the guy and trying to figure out ways to get back together with her “soul mate.” These are the worst kind of girls, in my opinion. He broke up with you for a reason. Second chances, third chances, etc… they never work. People don’t change. When he broke up with you the first time for something specific, it is almost guaranteed that he will break up with you for the same thing the next time(s). Girl, if he doesn’t think you are absolutely perfect and worship the ground you walk on, you don’t want to be with him anyway. Whether it has to do with the grade you got on your math test this morning, what you had for lunch the day before, or the shirt you saw your ex-best friend wearing the other day, we all have something that makes us feel some type of way. In high school, practically everyone goes through breakups. Whether we can label them as “good” or “bad”, it is up to the individuals involved, but any way it is done, there is always feelings being thrown around. Everyone has them, we girls usually just like to be more open with ours.

by SHELBY THOMPSON

B

reakups. They can go any number of ways. You can have the gradual one where you are not really sure when it happened, the angry one with a lot of yelling, the “let’s just be friends” one, or the most annoying one: the breakup and get back together. Anyway it happens, breakups are pretty common in high school. So I would say just save yourself the trouble and don’t get into a relationship in the first place so you won’t have to worry about the breakup. One thing that annoys me is when people say it was a “good breakup”. What is a “good breakup”? I do not think that it is possible. If you are not mad or upset you were not really dating in the first place. That is the thing that gets to me, people putting a label on it for no reason if they’re not really into each other. In that case it’s a good thing that they “broke up”. The easiest breakup is the angry one, maybe because I’ve had my share of these, but when you get in a fight or someone is mad at the other obviously something happened. It’s easy to deal with because you have a reason to be mad or you know

you did something wrong. With other breakups when they say “feelings changed” it just makes you wonder what happened or what you did. So if I had to break up with someone i would like them to have done something so I have a reason to be mad. Now to the MOST AGGRAVATING one: the break up and get back together. I absolutely hate couples who do this. If you’re going to break up, then don’t go right back to the same person. Obviously you aren’t good for each other and if you didn’t think you should be together last week you shouldn’t be together this week. Also, these tend to happen with girls that just assume things without even asking you and use that as a reason to break up. That really gets me heated. So guys, just save yourself the trouble and avoid the whole relationship thing. I’m not saying you should disassociate yourself with girls or anything, but I would honestly just keep out of getting into something really committed. You’re 14-18 years old you don’t need to and probably won’t find the love of your life so why waste your time and deal with the drama?
