SUMMER BUCKET LIST
“My most memorable freshman year memory was definitely basketball. The older girls always kind of messed with us but it was lots of fun and I remember it like it was yesterday.” Sydney Baska (12) “One of my favorite freshman year memories was the first time I did high jump. I went to stop, but instead ending up falling and scaring the right side of my body. It sucked at the time, but looking back on it it’s so funny.” Janae Hammond (12)

issue eight, volume 17 may 8, 2015
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR The school year is finally coming to a close, we've dealt with the all the pressures surrounding school for the past nine months and now it is time to celebrate. The summer days coming should be spent with friends and family doing as many things you can. You could go to a concert this summer (page 10) or you could just cross off every item on the summer bucket list we've created (page 15). You could spend a summer night enjoying a movie out at the theater, maybe see the new Avengers movie that is a part of the massive Marvel franchise (page 19). One of the best ways

GENERATION Apple releases their first wearable device, but will it be as successful as hoped? Take a look into the future, what do you see? Flying cars? Robots being a part of your everyday life? How about a computer that you strap on to your wrist? On April 24 Apple released its first generation of the Apple Watch. It was surprisingly not the first wearable device on the market, but it was the first to make it extremely compatible and unique for each user. With a price range that begins at $349 for a "Sport" styled watch all the way to $17,000 high end watch, made with precious 18-karat gold, Apple set out on a voyage to create a standing ground in such a new space. "I would never spend that much money on one, I think they are fun, but definitely not worth that much," said Chloe Urmacher, senior. But for some the watch is what they've been dreaming of. While the new device may not have hit South yet, it could in the very near future. "I'll probably get one at some point in the future. They just aren't really a trend yet," said Lewis Lundy, junior. The question is if the trend will ever hit South; is the wearable device a fad or is it really here to stay? According to Business Insider, the wearable device will grow 35 percent every year, making total devices shipped in the year 2019, 148 million, compared to this year’s 33 million. "I might eventually get one, but I think I will have to wait until they are more refined; this is just the first device that is sure to have some issues, that's why I think this round it is just a fad," said Urmacher. "But I think they will advance the technology and make a real comeback." The Apple Watch is a device of the future, and the consumer has yet to see how much the technology will affect the future. by KYLE VANICE

Understanding Anxiety
by SHELBY ERSKINE
A look into the serious effects of anxiety on teenagers Despite common misconceptions and stigmas associated with anxiety, it is in fact a real disease. It is the most common type of mental disorder in the United States. Feeling light headed, sweaty, short of breath, and having a pounding heart are just some of the many symptoms a person can experience while experiencing symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety comes in different types: social, phobia, panic attacks, and generalized. Those with generalized anxiety experience it for no apparent reason. Twice as many women are affected than men, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Phobias are strong irrational fears and social anxiety is the extreme fear of being judged by others in social situations. “With me, anxiety attacks come at random times. When it comes, feel like I need to leave wherever I’m at, but sometimes I can’t because I’ll be at school or work. My heart races and my breathing can’t keep up with how fast my heart rate is and it’s miserable,” said Kalie Jones, senior. While having some anxiety is a natural part of life, it becomes a problem when it starts to affect a person’s everyday routine and make them dread the simple things in life. CRC Health Group states that it is becoming a growing problem for people across the world, including teenagers. According to the National Institute of
Mental Health, only 18 percent of teenagers with anxiety are getting treatment to help cope with their anxiety. “I think anxiety is becoming more common, especially in teenagers. We are put under more pressure than teens 20-25 years ago to actually go to college. More jobs want you to have a degree and it’s so expensive to get,” said Justin Weymuth, senior. Nowadays there is more controversy being spread about medication being prescribed for people suffering with anxiety. It is hard to determine whether or not the person actually needs the medication or is using it for other purposes. Some of these medications also have negative side effects and people are likely to jump to conclusions and rush to get medication before seeking other alternatives, according to the Association for Behavior and Cognitive Therapies. “I definitely think that if the anxiety is bad enough that they need medication then go for it. But people should take it exactly as they’re supposed to and it maybe shouldn’t be as easy to get prescribed,” said Eliza Ellison, freshman. If a person is suffering from anxiety, there are many treatment options because each case is different. Seeing a counselor, getting medication, and even maintaining a healthy diet and exercise plan have all been proven to be very beneficial according to the Mayo Clinic’s website.

NEWS FEAT OPIN SPORT From one experience to another they all have something in common: adoption.
According to by MORGAN GREER Americanadoption. com nine out of every 10 adoptive couples said the relationship they share with their adoptive child is “very close”, and nearly half said that their relationship is “even better than expected”. This is the gift that just keeps on giving. Adoption gives individuals endless opportunities, provides chances, and long term happiness. “Adoption is a way to help kids who need families. But really it helped us more than it helped them, because it was a way for us to have a family when we weren’t able to do that on our own. I think it is just a way to help everyone,” said Mandy Brewington, social studies. Out of all of the endless possibilities that are provided, adoption is just one of the many that provides hope to those who truly deserve it, leading to positive impacts in people’s lives from all over the world. “A positive aspect of adoption is it gives a chance for a family to add another member and at the same time can take a child out of a terrible situation. For example, my sister Sadie is from a bad part of Guatemala and adopting her saved her from experiencing any more bad care and such,” said Seth Hudson, junior. Adoption may not be everyone’s first choice but the impact it leaves on lives can be incredible. It is a pretty broad topic, but makes everyone’s story and journey even more worthwhile.

A chance presented and an experience of a lifetime all wrapped up in one word: adoption. There are 1,527 students enrolled at South and there is a good handful that share this topic in common. Each individual has a different story and that is what makes South so unique. Students have been adopted themselves, have a sibling(s) who happened to be adopted, and even teachers are adopting. Adoption is becoming a more and more common thing, not only at South, but all over the world. Adoption is legal in all 50 states. Adoption is not just something that happens overnight. When, where, why, and how are the complications that can come along with adoption, making it a process. Each process is different depending on the situation and the circumstances. Which leads to making the outcome even more worthwhile, when everything is all said and done. “My parents adopted me and knew I was coming before I was born. My parents picked me up from St.Luke’s that day. I think it is really cool and it is a good experience, it helps a lot of people,” said Cydney Wuebben, sophomore. Adoption is worldwide, many individuals are from all over the world brought to new places and new cultures. “When I was a few months old I was adopted; I am from Shanghai China. My family and I are planning on taking a trip to China to see the culture in the near future,” said Mia Hackett, sophomore. Many are aware adoption does not make someone blood related to the family they become a part of, but family is family.

NEWS FEAT OPIN SPORT The Kansas City Royals made it to the playoffs in October for the first time since 1985. After a close extra innings American League wild card game with the Oakland Athletics, the Royals made an undefeated run to the World Series (a postseason history first), but ended up losing in game 7 of the championship series. The postseason run brought hope to South students and Royals fans all over. “Up until this past season, I’ve never really enjoyed watching the MLB. But after seeing the Royals incredible run this past season, I’m now looking forward to watching the Royals closely this season,” said Jordan Crawford, senior.

The summer of 2015 kicks off right in New York, where the Governor’s Ball is held. It is a festival consisting of all different types of music including Drake, The Black Keys, Lana Del Rey, Logic, and many, many more. This three day event is held at Randall’s Island Park on June 5-7. Tickets start at about $100, and go all the way up to $2,000. Never heard of them? It is Wiz Khalifa and Fall Out Boy touring throughout the summer. The unlikely duo is set for 30 different tour dates along with openers, Hoodie Allen and DJ Drama. “Sounds like a pretty crazy duo, which can only lead to a just as crazy concert,” said Kaitlyn Roos (sophomore). The show is on Tuesday, July 21, at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre in Kansas City, while tickets range from $60-$210. Next in the lineup of great shows this summer is the Grassroots Music Festival. It is a little bit closer to home than going all the way to New York and will be hosting acts like Logic, Mac Miller, and Kid Cudi on July 31. The festival will be held at Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park in Council Bluffs, IA. Tickets are from $50-$150. No matter if they travel cross-country or stay close to home at the Cricket Wireless Amphitheater, the summer is always the biggest time to spend nights seeing favorite artists perform live.

In high school, students gain loads of experience over the years, and here they pass on that experience in advice on how to choose a college.
by ADELE ROYLE No matter how prepared you think you are, deciding on where to go to college is a confusing and stressful process. With graduation and deadlines creeping in on South’s Seniors, they gave their best advice on just how they got there. Some say the most important thing about choosing a college is that it fits your criteria. Most students have a list of 5-10 things that are most important to them when choosing a college. “The top three things were that the school has a good field of study for what I want to go into, a good community surrounding the school, and then overall just how much I enjoy the school,” said Andrew Scott, Senior. This list cannot be generalized; you should make your list from what is good for you, not anyone else. “For me, the most important things were location, cost, and how much I liked the campus,” said Sarah Carney, Senior. Usually people have a few colleges to choose from. “My best advice is to start early and look everywhere you might
want to go, because you never know what’s out there,” said Carney. “If you even have the slightest thought about going to a college, go ahead and apply because even though you may think ‘Oh, I’ll never go there,’ you still may end up realizing that school was good for you down the road,” said Scott. Everyone is going to college with different motives; maybe you want to go to a school because of how good a certain program is, or maybe because of it’s location. But for some people, it’s because of a sport. “When you go through the recruiting process email a ton. Pick your top 5-10 colleges and contact them often. Go to their camps and send them your schedule. The best thing you can do is make sure they know who you are,” said Shay Jackson, Senior. No matter what, it is good to have a plan on how you are going to choose your college. Although it can be a stressful and confusing process, everyone has to go through it eventually, so do not be afraid to ask for advice.

VIEW STAFF EDITORIAL the next step In Kindergarten we walked across a small stage and were handed a diploma. We did it; we made it through our first year of school. 12 years later we are finally done, we are ready to be sent off and go down each of our individual paths. We are ready to walk across that stage and grasp the diploma in our hands. We are ready to set foot into the future and experience new things; go on new adventures. We are ready to mature and grow into being adults. We are ready to be independent. For many, this time will be the last time they live at home, becoming entirely independent from their parents and leaving home is an extremely huge step to take, making taking in every minute of it incredibly important. The time should be spent spending time with your family and all of your close friends. Embarking on the bright future will be sure to leave some of them in the dark. Not everyone in your life now will be here 10 years later which makes the time you spend with them now that much more precious.
For those staying closer to home and advancing directly into a career or deciding what they want their future to hold, it is still a big step for you too. It's finally the time for you to make all of your own decisions. You can move out, you can meet new people, you can decide exactly what you choose to do. The freedom we will experience after we walk across the stage will be strange; up until now almost everything has been decided for us when it comes to what we do every day. But now, it's our time to choose. Whether your future consists of four years at Mizzou, or some time spent at Maple Woods, or even starting a career, whatever you decide to do the summer should be spent relaxing and spending time with our peers before they head in all different directions. On Sunday, May 17, 2015 we will walk across stage, and we will grab that diploma in our hands, and we will throw our caps in the air and we will finally be done.

STUDENTS HAVE THE CHANCE TO TRAVEL THE WORLD THROUGH SOUTH
by LEXI MADDOX
MORE THAN JUST A FIELD TRIP From Italy and France to the Galapagos Islands, some South students will get the chance to travel across the globe this summer. Each summer, trips are offered through the school and this year these excursions will include a group traveling across Europe to Italy, France, and Switzerland and a separate trip to the Galapagos Islands. Lauren Fricke, junior, is looking forward to going to Switzerland and Italy this summer. She learned about the trip through Asian Culture Club and also saw posters up around the school. Fricke will also be participating in the German Stay, an optional part of the trip where students can visit the German exchange students. The goal is to enjoy the experience and also learn something along the way. Fricke said that she wants to learn some more German while she is there. “I’m really into the cultural stuff and I also want to try the food,” said Fricke. Along with trying some new cuisine, Fricke and other students on the trip will have the chance to visit famous landmarks and locations such as Pompeii and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Still, there is one landmark that Fricke said she really wants to see. “I’m hoping to see the Eiffel Tower; it’s thirty minutes from where I’ll be. How do you go and not see

the Eiffel Tower?!” she said. Another option for students who want to travel this summer is the trip to the Galapagos Islands from June 15 to the 25. The Galapagos Islands are home to one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. In fact, 20 percent of the marine life there cannot be found anywhere else in the world, according to Galapagos Conservancy. The trip is sure to be a once in a lifetime experience. “I got the note about the trip. I was excited, so I went to the meeting,”explained Morgan Greenfield, sophomore. Prior to learning of the trip to the Galapagos, Greenfield had also talked to her biology teacher about being interested in the opportunity to take part in an educational trip. “I know we are going to some of the different islands and also going to Ecuador,” said Greenfield. While in the Galapagos, the travelers will have the chance to visit several of the beautiful islands including San Cristobal and Isabela Island. At San Cristobal they will spend time on the beach and enjoy the wildlife that lives there. Later in the trip the students will hike the Sierra Negra Volcano. Though the destinations of these two school trips are very different, both will allow students to learn and further their knowledge in a hands on way.

by BRADY SMITH The assumptions of the religious freedom act have caused controversy throughout the country. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, or RFR, has actually been around for over two decades. The Act was originally created to allow Native Americans to perform religious ceremonies even if they involve illegal substances. RFR has also been used for many other purposes like allowing churches to feed the homeless, allowing Muslim women to wear scarves or veils to any event (like school), and allowing Amish buggies on the highway. Bill Clinton, democratic president at the time, signed the act on November 16, 1993 without questioning RFR’s intentions. 21 states currently have a bill similar
to RFR, including Missouri. The bill has not caused any problems until recently; people have thought it was flawed and could be used as discrimination. Some believe that the bill could be used to deny certain people service, specifically gays and lesbians, leading people to question RFR’s purpose. However, no one has used this bill to deny gay and lesbians thus far. In fact, people who have denied LGBT on claims of RFR have lost in court. The judges have claimed that antidiscrimination laws trumps anything similar to RFR. A judge in Washington state ruled against a florist, that attempted to deny a gay couple, in March saying that it was discrimination above religious freedom.
People believe that this act gives leeway for people against LGBT to discriminate. People also have been interpreting the bill in a way that anyone can deny LGBT service on claims of religious freedom. For example, if a gay couple went into an ice cream shop, the workers have the freedom to deny them. Does the bill actually contain this? A large portion of the controversy is how far is too far? Should a pastor be allowed to deny wedding people of another religion? Can a pastor deny wedding a gay or lesbian couple if it is against the pastor’s religion? Can a florist or a small business deny selling to a gay or lesbian couple? Many believe that RFR is too broad and needs to be specified to become successful. When people think about RFR, they jump straight to discrimination. However, many cases have proven that anti-discrimination laws trump RFR. This means that if a small businesses tried to deny a gay couple service, they could take it to court. Any time that this has happened, the business has lost due to anti-discrimination laws. Also, if the government were to completely eliminate the bill, it would get rid of protections of things that the public does not associate RFR with. Like preserving the rights of Native Americans, Muslims, Amish, and people of all religions. Fully eliminating the bill, would harm these people. The majority of the uprising controversy has taken place in Indiana. The writers of the law have
agreed that they will make changes and provisions of the law to make it more specific. They did not eliminate the law because it protects way more people than what people have recently focused on. Once they are done ratifying the bill, their intentions are that no one may be discriminated against using this law. It is mainly an Indiana issue that should be solved once they are done reforming the bill. Anyone can view both sides as discrimination when you take the time to look at other’s opinions. There is the side from a gay or lesbian, who is being discriminated against just for their sexuality. This breaks their basic human rights. However, there is discrimination on the other side too. Forcing someone to break their religious views to appease someone is breaking their first amendment rights, under certain circumstances. Both sides can be viewed as breaking their basic rights. There is one question that nobody seems to be able to answer, “How can someone pick whose rights are more important?” In order to not discriminate against either side, there has to be a compromise. Once the bill is specified, not eliminated, religious people will not have to appeal their rights and cannot discriminate against LGBT. In order to settle this issue, it must be understood that RFR protects a wide range of people. The controversy should cease once everyone takes the time to see it from the viewpoint of the other side.

The idea that everyone has equal rights and opportunities has always been a philosophy that the United States has withheld. But what happens when it isn’t possible for everyone to be equal? The Religious Freedom Act has been accused of being a catalyst for discrimination against gay and lesbian couples. However, if the bill were to be eliminated rights of religious people would be affected. This leaves the religious people unhappy with having to diminish part of their beliefs to indulge the rights of others while their rights aren’t being accommodated to. Now there is a fight for whose rights are right.

BETTERCall SAUL
If you are like me, finishing “Breaking Bad” was like having your heart and soul ripped out. For awhile I didn’t know what to do without my heart and soul. I made it through about a month of heartbreak and depression before I decided to watch the entire series again. (If you haven’t done this, I recommend it; it is somehow even better the second time). When I finished “Breaking Bad” for the second time it wasn’t as heartbreaking as the first, but a part of me was still missing. How does one fill this missing piece? On February 12, veteran “Bad” watchers finally found the answer: “Better Call Saul”. “Better Call Saul” is the prequel to “Breaking Bad”. It is a look into the life of Walter White’s lawyer, Saul Goodman. The show takes place in 2002, six years before Walter White met Saul Goodman in season two of “Bad”. In “Better Call Saul”, we found out that Saul Goodman’s real name is Jimmy McGill, played by Bob Odenkirk. Another familiar “Bad” face seen on the show is Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks). The first season focuses on Jimmy and Mike’s separate backstories. “Saul” is about a lawyer discovering himself, and figuring out what he is meant to do with his skills. In the beginning of season one, Jimmy is trying to prove he can hang with the big time, white collar lawyers like his brother, Chuck McGill (Michael McKean). Jimmy is turned down over and over, but never stops trying - until the season finale. The finale was one of the best moments of the season (as it should be), and made me very excited for season two. The honest, good-hearted Jimmy McGill is much different than the sleazy, greedy, criminal Saul Goodman

that “Bad” watchers grew to love. During “Bad”, Saul was one of my favorite characters. He once described Walter White’s taste in women and lawyers as “only the very best, with just the right amount of dirty.” Saul’s hilarious one liners and sleazy style were what made me fall in love with him. Now as the star of his own show, he has a similar personality and Odenkirk’s acting really carries the show. With a lot of exposition and a small amount of action, the first season of “Saul” was a bit slow. I found myself asking, where is this show going? When are we going to reach a set storyline? Will the exposition EVER end? Overall though, I enjoyed the show. My main disappointment was the lack of criminality. After the season finale, I now know that criminality is on its way, but I was still disappointed that this famous Vince Gilligan trend didn’t make some what of an appearance. There were several times when I was sure that Jimmy’s criminal side was going to come out, and a plot would actually start, but we never saw that in the first season. However, I’ve got a great feeling about the second season for this aspect of the show to come out. “Better Call Saul” and “Breaking Bad” are both created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. Many people feared that this show could never live up to “Bad” (the greatest show of all time). Bob Odenkirk said, ”We want to make sure the audience sees right away that it’s not a continuation of Breaking Bad, but rather its own thing that hopefully is going to be entertaining on its own terms.” “Saul” and “Bad” have their similarities like the slow moving scenes, artistic shots, and long impactful character speeches. However, Odenkirk is right; they are two very different shows, each with their own triumphs and faults. So far, “Saul” lacks in a few areas that “Bad” excelled in. The biggest one to me, but possibly the most irreplaceable one, is the Jesse & Walt relationship. That is the biggest thing missing in “Saul” so far. Jimmy and Chuck had somewhat of a strong relationship in season one, but nothing like Jesse and Walt’s love- hate relationship. This may be an unfair example because of the fact that Jesse and Walt’s strange, father-son love for each other could never be recreated, but it is one thing “Saul” is unfortunately missing. Another unfortunate thing about “Saul” is its missing the death threat factor. We know that Jimmy, Mike, and a few other characters live on to the Breaking Bad era. So if at any point during this show, Jimmy or Mike is put into a life threatening situation, we know that they will make it out alive. This creates a more difficult job for the writers of “Saul”, because they have to find a way to keep things interesting without relying on the audience’s suspense or fear of certain character’s deaths. The biggest similarity of these two shows, that is clearly a favorite trend for Vince Gilligan, is the main character’s decline into criminality. “Saul” and “Bad” are both focused on character’s who think they have their life set in place, but then come to realize their true calling is found in something much more exciting: crime.

Ingredients: per baking sheet: approx. 1/2 bunch kale leaves 1/2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil or melted coconut oil 1.5 tablespoons nutritional yeast 1 teaspoon garlic powder 3/4 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 1/4 teaspoon fine grain sea salt or pink Himalayan sea salt 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 300F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Remove leaves from the stems of the kale and roughly tear it up into large pieces. Compost the stems (or freeze for smoothies). Wash and spin the leaves until thoroughly dry. 3. Add kale leaves into a large bowl. Massage in the oil until all the nooks and crannies are coated in oil. Now sprinkle on the spices/seasonings and toss to combine. 4. Spread out the kale onto the prepared baking sheet into a single layer, being sure not to overcrowd the kale. 5. Bake for 10 minutes, rotate the pan, and bake for another 12-15 minutes more until the kale begins to firm up. The kale will look shrunken, but this is normal. I bake for 25 mins. total in my oven. 6. Cool the kale on the sheet for 3 minutes before digging in! This really makes all the difference! Enjoy immediately as they lose their crispiness with time. Repeat this process for the other half of the bunch. Note: Feel free to make these in a dehydrator if you have one. You can also experiment with the convection or dehydrator setting on your oven (if applicable).

VEATIN’ story of a vegan eating teen by ALIZA RUSSELL I have been interested in veganism since I first read an article about it last fall. Since then, I have slowly transitioned myself into following a vegan diet. Physically and mentally, I have never felt better. A lot of people, especially high schoolers, are oblivious to the rules of veganism or even the word vegan itself. By definition, a vegan is a vegetarian who omits all animal products from their diet. Now, the range of vegans throughout the world is broad and motley. Another definition states a vegan is a person who does not use any animal products. This is why I avoid calling myself a vegan, and instead say I follow a vegan diet. Extremists will refuse to purchase wool or leather clothing/accessories, and even abstain from sitting on leather couches. I don’t mind sitting on a cow couch; it’s the eating part I am abstaining from. If I would’ve come across this idea a year ago, I’m not sure I’d want anything to do with it. It is definitely more of a mental than a physical challenge. Many will argue avoiding the consumption of animal products is unhealthy, and that eating meat and dairy are the best sources of protein and other essential nutrients. I agree that these are good sources, but not that they are the best. Protein from plant-based foods, such as soy and quinoa, is classified as complete protein because it contains all the essential amino acids found in meat. You can consume the same amount of protein from plants
without the high amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol you’d receive from meats. Vegans (who are smart about planning) get all the nutrients they need to be healthy. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vegans are less likely to develop diabetes, heart disease, cancer or high blood pressure than meat eaters are. I won’t ramble on about anymore health statistics because most of you are eating cafeteria pizza for lunch, but if you’re actually interested I recommend attempting to read “The Kind Diet” by Alicia Silverstone- a vegan cookbook/guide to becoming vegan. There are reasons other than nutritional facts (it also gives you great skin) that are influential enough to convert even the biggest carnivores to vegans. Some will say they decided to make the change out of care for animals and the environment. Others say it is helping to feed the world. I personally made the switch for multiple reasons, but mostly because of the challenge. Being a dancer, I am persistently cautious of my appearance, and following this strict of a food lifestyle is only inflicting smarter and healthier decisions. Now, I feel stronger both mentally and physically and the list will only grow from here. I encourage everyone to look further into vegans, vegetarians, or even just the foods they are consuming and receiving energy from. You’d be surprised the way foods are being processed nowadays! Michelle Obama knows.

MOVIE
A look back on some of the movies I’ve seen in my four years of high school. As a tiny little freshman walking into C200, a class filled with upperclassman, I wasn’t exactly sure how I’d fit in. The only thing I really knew was that I was good at writing movie reviews. A lot has changed since then, and I’ve seen a lot of movies. Here’s a look at some of the most interesting (both good and bad) movies that I’ve seen since I was a freshman.
MADNESS: WORST MOVIE A REFLECTION by CALEB FENNER
BEST MOVIE
DJANGO UNCHAINED (2012) My man crush on Quentin Tarantino is well known. The only movie he’s released while I’ve been in high school is “Django Unchained”. Tarantino’s ultra-violent western is a near masterpiece. Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson give remarkable performances. The music, cinematography and plot are all fantastic. It’s not Tarantino’s best movie, but it is definitely up there.
IT GREW ON ME
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012) I had such high expectations for “TDKR” that I think it was impossible for it to live up to the hype. I’ve gone on record as saying “The Dark Knight” is far and away the best superhero movie ever made. I expected the last film in Christopher Nolan’s incredible trilogy to be a masterpiece, as was its predecessor. It clearly wasn’t. And I was so upset that the series didn’t end how I wanted it to. After much thought, I decided to rewatch the film, and give it a fair shot. Coming out the second time, with no expectations, I was much more impressed. Tom Hardy is no Heath Ledger, but he’s very good as Bane. All the returning members of the cast did a good job, and although I’ll never ever like Anne Hathaway, she’s tolerable as Cat-Woman. Nolan is a genius, but my standards were too high. Going back, the movie is actually pretty good.

CLOUD ATLAS (2012)
Just thinking about this movie makes me want to throw up. Tom Hanks and Halle Berry star in one of the worst movies I have ever seen. What makes it worse was that I walked in thinking the movie could be really good. The plot is terribly confusing, the acting is atrocious, and the movie runs for 172 minutes. I don’t wanna watch a good movie for 172 minutes, let alone this piece of crap excuse for one. It’s still to this day the only movie I have ever walked out of.
MOST DISAPPOINTING LOOPER (2012)
I think this was the most let down I’ve been after seeing a movie. I had such high expectations, and how could you not? A cast that feature Joseph Gordon Levitt (JGL is one of my favorites), Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, an extremely interesting plot, and the movie had been extremely hyped up. And I left the movie not just disappointed, but angry. The acting was awful, JGL didn’t even really look like Willis (kind of a big deal) and the ending was awful. Disappointed was an understatement.
WORST OSCAR WIN THE ARTIST (2011)
It’s not that “The Artist” is bad, it’s just that there is no way it should have won best picture. Absolutely no way. “Midnight in Paris”, “Moneyball”, “The Help”, and “The Descendants” were all better. Significantly. Jean Dujardin is fantastic, but the rest of the movie felt flat. I understand the purpose behind the film, but to be honest, it’s harder to enjoy a movie without sound. That’s why we don’t make those movies anymore. Again, I’m not saying that “The Artist” is bad, I just don’t think it was the best picture that year.

THE AGE OF MARVEL With three movies coming out this year and even more coming out next year, Marvel comics has created an empire that can do no wrong, while competitor DC is having a little trouble getting its franchise off the ground.
I
by PATRICK ROBEY
n 2008, Marvel took a gamble by making “Iron Man”, a movie that could lead into an interconnected web of superhero films. Marvel wanted to make this without the help of Sony or 20th Century Fox, which meant that all money came out of pocket and they had to tweak the stories to not include characters they had already sold the rights to. This was worth it though, Marvel has been able to make over a billion dollars at the box office, have created three live action shows (Daredevil, Agent Carter, and Agents of Shield), have been able to get the rights back to Spider-Man from Sony, and have become the better comics company. DC, Marvel’s ultimate rival, has not been doing as well as Marvel. DC is trying to start up a series of superhero movies with “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice”, which based on the first trailer looks like it has the potential to be good. However, DC has a lot of work to make their series as good as The Avengers series, and is so far behind Marvel that next year “Dawn of Justice” won’t do as well “Captain America: Civil War”. Marvel’s newest show Daredevil is better than any other show that Marvel or DC has made. Because it is on Netflix Daredevil doesn’t have the restrictions that shows like Arrow, Gotham, and Agents of Shield have to work around. It is fairly gory and is more R-rated
than any other superhero show which makes it perfect to portray the origin story of Daredevil. I would suggest that anyone who has Netflix, likes Superhero movies or shows, and has a semi-strong stomach should give the show a shot. Daredevil is also great because it too is connected with not only the other shows they own, but also with the Marvel film series. Daredevil is just the first Netflix/Marvel show, with scheduled shows: Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and A.K.A. Jessica Jones to come out in 2015 and 2016. This year, Marvel has two movies (The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man) and one movie made with 20th Century Fox (The Fantastic Four). “Age of Ultron” will be way better than the first Avengers, possibly the best Marvel film so far, because it will be darker, the villain is better, and the addition of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will add powers that involve more than just fists. “Ant-Man” will most likely not be good, there are a lot of red flags including that many people originally dropped out of the project most likely because they didn’t think it would be good, they aren’t using Hank Pym as AntMan, and so far based on the trailers it looks like a drama, which aren’t really Paul Rudd’s strong suit. And as for the remake of “The Fantastic Four”, I think it will be good and way better than the original, which isn’t that hard, because they have a very skilled cast, it will show more of the character’s origin before they acquired their powers than the original did, and I think Fox knows their mistakes from the original and will not repeat them. While this year may have amazing superhero movies coming out, Marvel has even more in store with “Captain America: Civil War”, “X-Men Apocalypse”, “Doctor Strange”, “Gambit”, and the highly anticipated and long awaited “Deadpool” coming out next year. Marvel making a film universe was an amazing idea that has made billions of dollars and will only keep making money and has put them far ahead of DC. To catch up with Marvel, DC can’t have a single movie fail. DC needs to not make any more bad casting choices, they need to make superhero films without needing Superman and Batman in them, and they need to stop remaking their films and make a series. Marvel is pretty set for the next 4 years all they need to do is get the rights to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four back from 20th Century Fox to make the ultimate Avengers film. Marvel has done amazing, going from being behind DC for more than 20 years to becoming the makers of some of the highest grossing movies of all time.

A new season for the Royals brings lots of questions to be answered and many big time predictions Baseball is back in Kansas City and the streets are flooded with blue once again. The time has come where Royals fans can finally start looking forward to a new season instead of looking back and thinking about the 90 feet between the Royals and a potential World Series title. The goal is the same, a championship, but yet it seems much less distant than the beginning of last season. Although the Royals proved their worth in the 2014 playoffs many skeptics say it was all luck and say the Royals don’t have what it takes to even make the playoffs this year. The Royals are always somehow an underdog, but they feed off it and ignites them. The Royals
1. Moose Loose
Despite a disappointing regular season with a batting average of .212, third baseman Mike Moustakas showed up big in the postseason for the Royals with a walk off home run and many big hits and defensive plays. Although once again analysts believe that he will be a Royal flop. I think Moose will find his new rhythm and step up as a big hitter for the Royals at his new spot as second in the batting order. I believe he will have his best season yet and record a high number of homeruns as well.
3. Infante in Trouble
Second baseman Omar Infante has struggled in the past seasons with elbow injuries and on and off hitting. Infante is one of few Royals players I do not expect to excel this season, and I think will be replaced this summer by Christian Colon. Although young, Colon has shown promise in Spring Training and also had one of the biggest hits of the postseason last year with a huge bunt in the Wild Card game. Although there is a chance that Infante may have an average season at the plate, recurring injuries for him is something to look out for. It may take a little while for Colon to fit it, but it could be the right fit in the long run for the Royals at second base.
were ranked 25/30 in the Fox Sports MLB preseason rankings. It seems like the only people who didn’t think the Royals would not be a flop in 2015 were the great fans of KC and the Royals team themselves. The Royals proved their worth, coming out hot in the first couple weeks of the season, but continue to be compared down to their division rivals the Detroit Tigers. How can you already count out a team with the best bullpen in the league, some of the fastest players in the league, and debatably the best defense in the league? There is a long way to go though, and as we saw last year anything could happen. Here are my five bold predictions for the Royals 2015 season.
2. Dingers for Days One of the biggest problems for the Royals last regular season was home runs. It was a stun for many to see the team with the least homeruns in the whole league to make the World Series. The Royals relied on stealing, bunting, and good defense and pitching to win games instead. This season I believe the Royals will start hitting home runs, aka dingers, quite often and will just add dramatically to their ability to win games.
4. Big Game Ventura?
A new season for the Royals means a new pitching rotation, and a mix of new and young pitchers looking to step up into the spotlight. One of the Royals big leaders last year was pitcher James Shields who was not resigned to a contract last offseason. Analysts expected his loss to put a big dent in the Royals pitching, but I’m here to tell you there is no need to worry. “Big Game James” did not end up coming up so big in the postseason at all, but the Royals seemed to get by just fine. This year will be no different. Expect good numbers from Danny Duffy, new pitcher Edinson Volquez, and as always the deadliest bullpen in the league.
5. Race to the Finish
Despite what “great MLB analysts” predict about the Royals finishing third or fourth in their division and not making the playoffs, I believe along with all other KC fans that the Royals will in fact make the playoffs. Now I’m not saying it’s going to be easy just because we went to the World Series last year. It is going to be a tough race between the Tigers for the division title, and also a possibly good Cleveland team. Just like last year it will be close, but I think the playoffs will be in the team’s future whether it is a wild card spot or a division title. The Tigers are a good team with one of the best left handed hitters in the game, but I still believe as long as the Royals stay healthy that a division title could also be likely.

NEWS FEAT OPIN SPORT The Battle f The Sexes
This battle between men and women has been going on since the beginning of time: who has it harder? As you probably already guessed I will be informing (yes informing, not persuading) you as to why there is no doubt in my mind that guys have it harder. There are countless reasons why I believe this, but possibly the main reason is that the only thing girls have on guys is the two P’s; periods and pregnancy. Now don’t get me wrong, these are quite significant, but they are not enough to trump all that guys have to go through. Let’s start with work. Before I get into it in order to avoid being labeled as a sexist pig, yes I know women work and yes, I know there are women that do just about every type of job at the same level as men; and this is not an attack on women. It is a 100% fact that more men work. According to the United States Department of Labor: 75% of men work as opposed to only 57% of women, that is an 18% or 57.4 million person difference. Females like to say this is because they were discriminated against and didn’t get the job, but the fact of the matter is that the women are just not trying to get the jobs. While the men are at work a good amount of the women may be raising and taking care of their kids, but the rest are doing something along the lines of getting their nails done, having lunch with their BFF, lounging by the pool, or laying in bed watching entire seasons of their newest Netflix obsession. So much more is expected from men, and if we don’t live up to these unrealistic expectations we are called inconsiderate and selfish. Men are expected to open every door for a woman, pay for all the food and entertainment, be the breadwinners, text/call first, be “tough” and not show emotions, come up with a new cute and original way to ask you to every dance, play sports, and be ripped. But the most ridiculous expectation? Be over six foot tall. Now being 6’1” this doesn’t personally affect me, but still really makes me mad. Girls are just automatically ruling out guys under six foot and that really pisses me off. I mean can you imagine the reaction if guys all said something like “I would never date a girl that weighs more than 120 pounds.”? I’m confident that the sky might actually fall if guys did that. So how about next time you think about how you would feel if you were rejected because of something you had no control over. We aren’t the emotionless monsters you think we are. Guys have it harder, plain and simple. To throw you a curveball though I don’t mind it. I think men should do almost everything you needy girls expect from us, and I sure don’t want to bleed every month or birth a child. I give you girls a ton of respect for that. Both sexes have it hard, and even though guys may have it harder; life isn’t easy for anyone.
Being a girl is hard. From the pressure of looking good, to the fact that we have to birth babies. All in all girls suffer a harder life than guys. Society also sees women as weak and expects us to let the men be the one in power. Women have a harder time proving themselves to the world. The most obvious of them all would be the fact that women have to deal with having a baby. Bless us women for keeping the human race going. Not only is childbirth known to be one of the most painful things but there is also many risks to having kids. Women have to spend 9 months of their lives dealing with morning sickness, swollen ankles, and (every girl’s worst nightmare) seeing the numbers on the scale increase. All in all the pregnancy is difficult but the reminder that you aren’t sucks as well. During your period girls have to deal with cramps, the mood swings, and the just hassle of having it. We only get a 3 week break every month before the excruciating pain and extreme mood swings come right back. Boys taunt us for our quick mood changes and the constant complaining about the pain but they have no idea what we are going through. We go through that pain without even recognition. The double standard guys have baffles me. Guys call girls “sluts” if they have fun with different guys but they can have fun with any girl they want. The sexual double standard is alive and well. Guys can be involved with more than one girl and get high fived from his friends and is thought as is “cool” because he could manage to “bang a chick”. On the flip side when girls do the same its known to be “whorish”. This idea proves feminism is still an important issue that still needs to be addressed. Society makes us believe that we as girls must look and act like supermodels and any other body type isn’t accepted. The thought of a tiny waist, big boobs, flat stomach, long hair, and perfect skin, all while making it look natural and look like there was little to no effort put in is painful to think about. Yes there are societal norms for boys but they tend to be less emphasized. Girls are more likely to be ridiculed about their body than boys and they take it more seriously. A lot goes into getting ready for girls, from washing our long hair and actually having to fix it, to make up, to shaving, girls can’t just hop out of the shower and go. Guys also don’t have to shave as much. With the time, cost of products, and the mess it makes girls are the real champ for living the hairless lifestyle. So take the time to appreciate these women and understand what they do for men, just to impress them every day. Guys need to appreciate what girls have to go through and realize we have it harder than they think. We have periods, were viewed to be weaker than guys and we have the pressure to feel we need to be perfect. Once boys miraculously survive in our shoes then you can complain that you got it worse.

Tori Beeler, junior, has qualified for State in swim every year and has been a top swimmer for South. However, swim wasn’t always her passion. She started out as a gymnast, but after breaking her wrist and ankle, Beeler was told she couldn’t play high-impact sports anymore. “I didn’t like it at first,” said Beeler. “I don’t like to do things I’m not good at, but then I started getting better and I really like the people.” Before long, Beeler was a two-time State champion in the 200 IM, as well as a State champion in the medley relay and 100 backstoke. She was also named the Metro North Swimmer of the Year two years in a row and MSHSAA swimmer of the year for the 2014-2015 season. “I lift weights every morning to train and have two-a-day workouts,” said Beeler. Beeler’s dedication to training has led her to her many accomplishments, and will continue to in future years. She plans to swim in college, but she’s not sure where yet. “I’ve heard [swimming in college] gives you a set group of friends and it’s fun,” she said. Beeler has certainly found her place with swimming and with one more year to go, who knows what Beeler will accomplish in the pool.

Jordan Hammond, senior, has ran track all four years after being told in basketball that she was fast. Her accomplishments in track certainly show this to be true--she competes in a number of diverse events including: the 400, 200, and 800 meter runs as well as the 300 meter hurdles. “My favorite part of track is the adrenaline rush from competing,” said Hammond. “I’m really competitive.” She plans to take her competitive spirit and energetic personality to the collegiate level next year at Northwest Missouri State. “I like track and I’m just not done yet,” said Hammond. After qualifying for State last year in the 400 meter dash, Hammond ran summer track and indoor track over the winter to get ready for the next season. Hammond looks forward to making the best of her senior track season, hopefully qualifying for State again.

NEWS FEAT OPIN SPORT Imagine eleven 18-year-old men trying their best to hit a 14-year-old kid as hard as possible. That’s assault right? No. That’s the life of Shaefer Schuetz four years ago, when he started for the Panthers as quarterback five games into his freshman season. “It was tough to earn respect as a freshman starter,” said Shaefer Schuetz, senior. “I stayed reserved at first, and tried to earn respect through examples and working hard. I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes.” At first, Schuetz got some garbage time here and there, but Raytown South was the first time he was given the reigns to the offense. “I remember I was dry heaving in the locker room before the game. I barely had facial hair and these guys had full grown beards,” said Schuetz. But once the game started, he put the nerves to the side and trusted his instincts. In five games, Schuetz threw seven touchdown passes, establishing himself as the future of the team. That was the start of a prolific four years for Schuetz, where he broke nearly every school passing record, was voted all-conference and all-district QB numerous times, and even got an honorable mention nod for his punting prowess senior year. He plans to continue his football career at Bendictine College next year. Despite all these accomplishments, Schuetz said that his proudest moment as a Panther was how the team conducted themselves during a tough senior season. “It’s easy to be winners, and when you are so close to winning so many times and you just don’t, you’re labeled as losers, even though you’re just so close. I was extremely proud of how the guys took it and never made excuses. We handled it well,” said Schuetz.

Decent. That’s how Ryan Welty described his shooting skills this season, where he lead the Panthers to a second place finish in the class 5A State playoffs. “People always told me I was a good shooter, and I was like alright thanks, and I felt like I was a pretty decent shooter,” said Welty. Decent isn’t the word. This season, Welty shot 41% from behind the arc, sinking 74 3-pointers, none more important than the streak he went on in the elite 8 game against Rockhurst, where Welty made 4 straight 3’s in a span of 6 possessions. “That was pretty crazy because it was only like a two point game, and then we were suddenly up by like 12. I was pretty locked in,” said Welty. For Welty, if he has an opportunity, he’s going to take it. “If I’m open, shoot the ball. If you miss a couple, keep shooting. Once you hit a few, you’re gonna hit more and more. That’s a shooter’s mentality,” said Welty. Although Welty is deadly from deep, shooting 3’s isn’t his favorite part of the game. “Blocking. I don’t block too often, but when I do, it’s pretty enjoyable,” said Welty. After the playoffs, Welty was voted first team all-State...and he’s only a junior. There are plenty of words to describe Welty’s basketball skills, but decent just doesn’t do him justice.

veryone is different in their own way, whether it be their interests or their appearances. Each person has their own way to express themselves. Some people may do art, while others write. They may do sports or something to show their interests as well. People like Domonic Sarmiento, junior, use art as their outlet. He’s currently enrolled in an art class so he shows his passion for art every day. He said he enjoys it because you can “create what you imagine.” Since he’s in art, he says that the assignments can just help and give him ideas in general. Even so, he thinks that not everyone finds it fun. “I like the creativity [the most]... people can have the same interests, but can make things different,” Sarmiento said. It helps him express himself such as when he’s down, upset, or just with any mood and emotion in general. “I can make something based on my mood, like I made the Grim Reaper,” he said. Katherine Herrera, freshman, also chooses to express herself using art. She said she enjoys it because it’s a way to express herself. “I get to create whatever I want with no boundaries,” Herrera said. Grant Pace, junior, feels art helps him show what he feels. “[I enjoy art] because it changed the world around me. I really enjoy it,” he said. Pace feels that it changed his views on life, and that you can draw inspiration from normal things in the world. “[My favorite part is] the ability to portray a message,” he said. He likes that every piece has a meaning, but that everyone can have a different interpretation of it. Like the others, he believes it helps him express himself. In times when he’s stressed, he said that he’ll start a project, regardless of what he’s got going on. “It helps my mental sanity and helps pull my thoughts together,” Pace said. While some people like art as their outlet for expression, people like Hunyee Choi do sports to

express themselves. “[I enjoy sports], it’s fun to do.” Choi said. She doesn’t really have a favorite part, she just likes it. Choi feels it helps her express herself, but she said, “I can’t explain it, but it does.” While Choi may like sports and people like Pace, Herrera and Sarmiento like art, everyone expresses themselves in some way or another. It paints the personalities of everyone as individuals, and help them show how they feel in a way they enjoy.

Still deciding
The question every high schooler faces: is what we learn in school going to help us with our future career choice? “We learn a broad range of things so that we can have a good base for when we figure out what we want to do in college. The stuff we learn is more the foundation,” said Liam Dai, freshman. There are lots of different ways to prepare for future careers. Dai has personally been investing money in the stocks. He said he finds such things interesting and is helping prepare himself for a career in business finance. Lauren Bryant, sophomore, is hoping to find a career in art engineering. It all started with a little inspiration from her father. “I’ve always wanted a hands-on job and my dad was into construction and I wanted to incorporate art, so I decided to be an art engineer,” said Bryant. But with a career like that in mind, there is a variety of challenges Bryant will have to overcome. “One of the biggest obstacles I have faced in my career choice is probably being a girl,” said Bryant. In a country with countless career options, it can be hard to choose just one. Alexa Bowman, junior, has two careers on her mind. “I either want to be a pharmacist or a graphic designer. I like doing graphic design, but I don’t know if it would be a good job or if I would make enough money,” Bowman said. In high school, there are very few classes that will give you all of the information to go out and start a career. Bowman has found a few classes that have helped prepare her. Sometimes there are a few bumps in the road. “I’ve taken yearbook and a graphic design class,
and I was going to take printmaking but that got canceled because there weren’t enough people signed up,” Bowman said. Much like Bowman, Ryan Callahan, junior, is facing the challenge of choosing an uncommon career path. “I wanted to take a marketing class next year but there weren’t enough people wanting to take the class so they canceled it,” said Callahan. If the minimum amount of students that have to be enrolled in a class isn’t reached, students hoping to take that particular course will either have to wait or do so at a different time. However, this can be a major setback for students who are approaching their final semesters of high school, or just don’t have room in their schedule to take it at another time. Diversity is another important piece of a job. Callahan hopes to fulfill that aspect of the workforce. Callahan plans on going into sports marketing, where knowing more than one language and being knowledgeable about different cultures can be a huge advantage when dealing with athletes. He said he is currently taking Spanish classes and trying to become fluent as well as marketing classes. High school is all about figuring out what it is that interests you and what you’re good at. Although some students face challenges in their personal journeys through high school, overall it provides a platform of real-life struggles and experiences to hesitant teenage students. Everyone’s high school experience is different and hopefully you’ll leave high school with a solid foundation to get you through college and then go onto your career choice.

AWKWARD MOMENTS

chool can be a great time, but it can also be a very awkward time considering how many people surround you every single day. You don’t always have to be an awkward person to have an awkward moment... sometimes they will just sneak up on you. Or you will create them on purpose, either way. So what are the most awkward moments for students at South? Christian Holferty’s most awkward moment was in kindergarten. One fateful day he was waiting to use the bathroom. Unfortunately, the person ahead of him was taking too long. And by the time the person ahead of him was done it was too late. Holferty believes that silence is always a defining factor in an awkward moment. “Silence is killer,” he said. Although Holferty does not describe himself as an awkward person he admits that he does encounter a lot of awkward moments because his eccentric personality can sometimes be enigmatic to people. “Yeah, I’ve got a lot of awkward moments because people don’t always get me,” he said. Unlike Christian, Ben Becker says that he is an awkward person. “I make things awkward for humor,” he said.
page by AIDAN BEAN, NOAH GARRETT, CLAIRE RIDDELL and MCKENNA WEBSTER
He doesn’t try to stop awkward moments-- he creates them. But despite his mastery of awkwardness, even he has fallen victim to the clutches of an awkward moment. One day he was doing the morning announcements. Prom was nearing and some of his fellow anchors decided to play a prank on him. They asked him if he was going to go Prom (since he is a freshman he cannot go to Prom) and he had to adlib his way out of the situation which wasn’t a very easy task. Becker thinks that age has a lot to do with the quantity of awkward moments. “The older you get the more awkward moments you have because you don’t know what you’re saying,” he said. Jake Evans’ most awkward moment is actually a compilation of moments. He says that his most awkward moments occur whenever his girlfriend’s dad tries to start a conversation with him. He doesn’t believe this makes him an awkward person, but his girlfriend disagrees. Even if you aren’t an awkward person don’t expect to escape an awkward moment because they are always lurking somewhere beneath the surface.
“THE OLDER YOU GET THE MORE AWKWARD MOMENTS YOU HAVE BECAUSE YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE SAYING.”

110,140,000 is just a number to most people. To baseball fans, however, that is the 2015 Kansas City Royals. Baseball is evolving, much like everything else in the world, and it is becoming more and more of a business. In MLB ballparks, center field used to be a blank canvas. As the amount of money players are being paid is increasing, the need for extra income is a necessity. Advertisements by major corporations are a big factor in making sure that there is enough money to run the team. Ben Eason (freshman) said, “Advertisements make MLB teams money, and that is the way they stay MLB teams.” Another way that teams continue to make money throughout the season is, of course, selling tickets. The average ticket to a Major League Baseball game last year was $27.83. Collin Brougham (freshman) said, “I would spend around $40 to $50 on a ticket, depending on how good the seats are.” This is normally the case, as people are willing to spend a bigger chunk of change to get a little bit closer to the action. Lauren Powers (senior) said, “It depends on the game. I would spend a nice chunk if the seats were close.” Selling tickets isn’t always as easy as it sounds. That’s why the team’s stadium and
location is such an important factor. The better the stadium and location, the more tickets a team is going to sell. “Arizona is the best location because there is no rain, and it is usually warm, so they can play a lot of games and fans want to go,” said Eason. A lot of major sports teams’ owners are scared away by the few amount of people living in those places, so they locate their team closer to a big city. Brougham says, “Downtown in a big city is the best location, because there are a lot of people that are willing to buy tickets.” The Los Angeles
Who is your favorite MLB team other than the Royals?
Dodgers had the top total attendance rating in the MLB last year. The Tampa Bay Rays had the worst total attendance in 2014. Both teams are located in places with warm climates, but Los Angeles is a much bigger city than Tampa Bay. Teams are constantly updating and rebuilding their baseball stadiums. Paying fans want the best experience that can be offered, so the quality of the stadium
can play a big impact on the amount of tickets sold, as well as the amount of fans willing to pay to go to another game. The Kansas City Royals just did a $250 million renovation of Kauffman Stadium. In 2014, the Royals averaged a 24,154 attendance rate at home games. That is 7,208 more people than the Royals’ attendance rate in 2006. Eason said, “The stadium definitely plays an impact. You have to have a good environment otherwise people aren’t gonna go.” Baseball players are notoriously extremely highly paid individuals. Of course, there are mixed opinions on this. Some think that they are worth it, some think they should be paid a tiny fraction of what they are. Brougham said, “The more money you spend, the better record you are going to have.” However, he also said that baseball players are overpaid because the amount of money they are paid is just way too expensive. Baseball, disagrees however, and the Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera will still make his $28 million next year, regardless of what fans think. Baseball is still a game. It’s still played by people who love it. It is just turning into a business that people can make money off of.

ummer is a time full of excitement, good weather, and eventually boredom. Everybody likes to have fun and summer is the time to do it, but nobody likes to spend too much money on what they are doing, especially high school students. There are tons of things to do from picnics in the park to Royals games or even drive in movies. Emily Ditto (sophomore) said, “Royals games are a ton of fun with friends (and watching Hosmer), even when you get the cheap $20 tickets.” If you aren’t one for baseball there is always Sporting Kansas City games to attend. Spencer Denney (sophomore) said, “The environment and the fans in cauldron is my favorite part. It’s like one huge family at Sporting.” Being outside is also another big part about summer. For some people the summer goal

Hiking also is just a great way to get in shape during the break,” said Cali Gadd (freshman). The classic summer activity is going to the pool. “I like going with my friends and

getting tan and swimming. I also love getting the curly fries from National’s pool,” said Abby Waller (freshman). Being outside all the time isn’t for some people and it can’t be sunny all the time during the summer so knowing what to do on rainy days or days you want to stay inside is a good plan. You could read a book at the library, go bowling, see a movie, or binge watch something on Netflix. Michaela Santana (Freshman) said, “I like reading because books are more interesting than my own life and I like the environment of the library because no one talks to me. It’s quiet and I can pick my books out in peace.” So if your summer ends up not being full of excitement, but is instead full of boredom, then think back to these helpful tips, and enjoy your summer!
