LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Halfway through the school year. Only one semester left to do all of the things you want to accomplish this year. At this point in the year is when it comes, something that everyone dreads, but can be difficult for students and staff to avoid: the flu (page 4). Halfway through the year. Coach Simcox only has one semester left to enjoy his time here at South (page 11). This time of year also means Red Carpet Season; learn more about one of this year’s top contenders, American Sniper (page 18). Only one semester for South athletes, artists, scholars and musicians to give it their all and hope for the best. Only one semester left to accomplish your goals for this year and try to make the best of it.

ACHOO YOU’VE GOT THE FLU!

A

Why did so many people get the flu? How to prevent and avoid getting infected. by MORGAN GREER and ADELE ROYLE

s many of you may know the flu virus (influenza A H3N2) was an epidemic this year in Kansas City. Mainly prominent among children, the virus spread widely from person to person keeping kids from our very own high school away from school. The disease was so prevalent that doctors and hospitals were turning people away, not only visitors but in some hospitals, even patients. By late December, 10 of 28 hospitals located in or near Kansas City were not accepting helicopters due to the overflow of influenza patients. Children’s Mercy Hospital in downtown Kansas City prohibited visitors under the age of 12 years (including siblings) to visit the inpatient unit. This was due to the fact that respiratory viruses are so easily spread, especially when

4

individuals do not take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and others. Such precautions include washing hands frequently, getting enough rest, and getting the influenza vaccination. Yet, many people who got the vaccination this year still got the flu. This is due to the fact that the companies making these vaccinations simply have to guess on deciding what strand of the flu they think will be prominent that year. This is year the flu shot just happened to not be the right strain to fight against the flu. But, doctors still say that it is a good idea to go ahead and still get the shot due to the fact that these guesses are educated guesses and can still protect you from that strain of flu. The flu affected many individuals

this year, as well at South. Many value good attendance, but nobody said it was easy. “It’s hurt our attendance,” said John Carr, assistant principal. “If you aren’t here then we can’t be productive, so when you don’t feel good it’s hard to do well in school.” Recovery takes time, which isn’t always a smooth process. No one imagines spending their break sickly for a good chunk of it. “It wasn’t fun because I couldn’t leave the house,” said Madelyn Male, sophomore. “It sucks.” The flu can easily be prevented, but is not always preventable. Taking action ahead of time can make a difference. Once individuals have been exposed there is not much that can be done, besides waiting for the storm to pass.

For once your alarm clock sounds and you don’t have to move. Instead you can stay warm under your blankets and all your school assignments are put on hold. This is all thanks to the fresh blanket of snow covering the roads. Some South students view snow days as a much needed chance to relax and enjoy a day off. Others can only think about the warm summer day that has just been thrown out the window. Almost everyone initially welcomes the chance to have a snow day, but is a day off worth spending time in the classroom during what was meant to be summer break? Caroline Stock, sophomore, thinks it is worth it. “It’s called procrastination. Why do now what I can do later?” she said. Many other students also hope for winter weather in order to enjoy a day off away from school. Taylor Mulligan, freshman, acknowledged the fact that snow days are always fun and compared them to a “mini

winter break.” Still, she said, “I would rather be off school when it is warm outside than when it is freezing cold.” Some students don’t have to worry about days getting tacked on to the end of the year. Seniors are the exception of having to make snow days up at the end of the school year. For this reason, many seniors hope for plenty of snow days. Tucker Melles, a senior, said, “I definitely care how many snow days we have. You care when you have four AP classes.” This winter season has so far been a letdown for those seniors hoping to take advantage of the no snow days for seniors rule. After all, the Park Hill School District has had only one snow day (as of press time). Other seniors are content with the amount of snow days that have been called so far this year. Allison Kelly, senior, explained, “I don’t really mind it. If we have enough they’ll have us make them up anyway.” If and when school is called off it’s important to take advantage of the day off. So how are some South students spending their snow days? One option is to simply stay warm, enjoy some hot chocolate, and watch Netflix. Stock said this is what you could find her doing on any given snow day. However, Mulligan plans to bundle up and brave the cold at the National’s best sledding hill. She said, “I usually go sledding. The National is my favorite spot.” Many students will also be at Snow Creek skiing and snowboarding on fresh snow. So far this winter season there has been an absence of large volumes of snow, but is there any significant winter weather coming our way the rest of this year? The long range weather forecast for the month of February shows only a few chances of light snowfall. So if you’re in need of a snow day, don’t forget to turn your pajamas inside out and tuck a spoon under your pillow! Instead of a being dragged to school you can ignore your alarm clock and sleep in.

Where does your back pack go after school? 3) Lol, I haven’t used a backpack since the first week of school. 2) In my car. It has been there majority of this year. 1) By the kitchen table, I bring it in every night for homework.

How many times do you find yourself muttering the phrase “I can’t wait for college!” 3) I’m almost positive I could work it into every single conversation I have. 2) I’ve probably said it a couple times. There are things I am totally looking forward to but yet there are things that I will miss as well. 1) College..? I have more than enough time to even start thinking about that. Your morning is running behind by… 3) Well...after 30 minutes I decided not to go. 2) Less than 15 minutes 1) No more than 5 minutes.

You do not want to be there, but you’ll tolerate it. 1) Start to wonder why everyone is complaining. School really isn’t that big of a deal. Describing your appearance in a few words, it would be… 3) I had full intentions on looking decent today, but I gave up. Yea I get it, I look awful but what’s it to ya? 2) I’ll just stick to my jeans and a sweatshirt. My outfit says, I’m comfy without saying I look like I just got hit by a bus. 1) Appearance is everything. I make sure I give myself enough time just so I look good. If someone asks you how many days are till Graduation, your response is... 3) Not soon enough, I’m really regretting not graduating at semester. 2) Yes! It’s exactly …. days away! Trust me I’m counting down the minutes till I walk across that stage. 1) No, I don’t really care. I’ve got some time left in high school and I want to enjoy every bit of it. As for snow days.. 3) Bring it on! Make those underclassmen go to school till June 3rd! 2) Snow days are snow days. A few here and there, thats perfect. 1) Not another one please, I don’t want to stay here all summer.

11-14 15-22 YOU’RE SLIGHTLY FEVERISH.

Just like what your mom would say when you think you have strep throat, “drink some fluids and you’ll be fine”. You aren’t really bothered about the whole going to school thing; it is a pain at times, but you know you have to deal with it... and even enjoy it sometimes.

You used to just tolerate it, but you are starting to tolerHATE it. Now, the little things about school are starting to make you cringe. You miss a school day every once and a while because staying in bed and watching Netflix sounds a whole lot better.

NAH, YOU’RE GOOD.

OFFICIAL DIAGNOSIS: SENIORITIS Considering the fact that I have my PhD, I am qualified to tell you that with the symptoms you have exhibited, you indeed have Senioritis. The zero work ethic, need to stay at home, and the over excitement of a possible snow day prove that this contagious disease is running deep in your veins. As for treatment, graduation day is the only option.

South prepares to send off Coach Mark Simcox

END OF AN

ERA

by CONNOR JONES

Whether he’s your coach on the football field, your coach in the weight room, or just a friendly face you see in the hallway, nearly everyone you ask will tell you that Coach Mark Simcox has had a positive effect on their lives. For the first time in five years though, Coach Simcox will not be seen on the sideline, in the weight room, or even in the hallway. After 30 years of coaching and teaching, Coach Simcox is officially retiring at the end of this school year. Coach Simcox began his career 30 years ago in 1985 coaching four different sports at class 1A Orrick High School near Fort Osage, where he became the head football coach in 1990. After five years at Orrick, he was hired as the defensive coordinator at Blue Springs High School, and stayed there until the end of the

1999 season. In 2000, Coach Simcox became the defensive coordinator at Park Hill, winning a state championship with the Trojans in 2003. After Park Hill, Simcox got his first head coaching nod, spending four years at William Chrisman, from 2006-2010. Finally, in 2010, Simcox was hired as the head football coach at South and has been here for five years. Life as a head football coach at a Class 5A high school can be grueling. During the season, Simcox says he is up before 4:30 a.m., and is at the school by 6:30 a.m., looking at film, injury reports, attendance reports, grades and planning out that day’s practice schedule. Once school gets out, though, that’s when Simcox’s day slows down for him. He gets to to do what he love: coach football. “I enjoy the grind,” said Simcox. “If you don’t like it, there is no way you can do this for 30 years. There’s just too much work.” By the time it’s all said and done, Coach Simcox puts in a 15 hour work day, Monday through Thursday. Game days can be even worse. If the game goes long enough, Simcox will spend the night in his office, watching and critiquing every single play. People that have spent a lot of time around Simcox know how much work he puts in, and they appreciate it. They will also miss it when he retires. Jake Saylor, junior, said “I’ll miss just his presence on the field. He knows how to command a team. He’s a great leader and he really took Park Hill South football to another level.” What nearly every answer centered around though wasn’t football, but rather how Simcox actually cared for his students and players. “He’s a great mentor and a genuinely nice person,” said Andrew Richards, senior. “You can tell he really cares about his players as people. You can go to him with anything and he’ll help you out.” “He always gives me advice about college and life in general” says Derrick Cook, senior. “He’s definitely the best coach I’ve ever had.” After five years of Coach Simcox being at South, it will be weird for a lot of people not seeing him here next year. He’s been a staple here for many students at South for their entire high school career, and has definitely made some memories for him to take to Kansas, where he hopes to continue his coaching career. “My favorite memory at South was probably beating Kearney in the District semifinals in 2012. We were an underdog and no one really thought twice about us, but we really handled them,” he said. Although he already has a State ring, Simcox wants another shot with his new school. “I’ve been there one time and I won it. I definitely would like to get back there one day before I’m done coaching for good,” he said. Although Simcox is moving on, South will always have a special place in his heart. “I wish I would have found this school 20 years ago,” he said. “This would have been a great place to spend my career at. I’m truly going to miss it.”

What Happened & Why

n Jan. 7, two masked gunmen entered the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine originated in Paris, France. The two men were brothers, Cherif and Said Kouachi. They first shot and killed a caretaker of the office, and a bodyguard, according to CNN. They then made their way to a meeting room, where they read from a list specifically asking for the editor of the magazine and four cartoonists. They executed all five, along with four other staff members that were present in the meeting. Finally, as the brothers made their escape, they shot and killed one French police officer. In all, 12 people were killed in the Charlie Hebdo offices attack.

Witnesses who gave information to CNN claimed to have heard the men shouting, “Allahu Akbar,” an arabic phrase which translates to “God is Great” in English. Witnesses also heard the men shouting the names of the deceased journalists. Charlie Hebdo (French for Charlie Weekly) is known for its sometimes controversial cartoons, reports and jokes on politics, culture and religion. The magazine’s provocative depictions of the Prophet Muhammad are allegedly what led to the recent attacks. In the Islamic faith, there is no established image of Muhammad, therefore Muslims believe that it is prohibited to depict the prophet in any way. Charlie Hebdo printed several cartoons in the past depicting the prophet, which incited the attack on Jan. 7..

The gunmen, Cherif and Said Kouachi, belonged to an al-Queda branch in Yemen, called al-Queda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP. On Jan. 14, one week after the massacre, Nasr al-Ansi, commander of AQAP, posted an online video claiming responsibility for the attack. Translated to English, Ansi said, “We, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, claim responsibility for this operation as vengeance for the messenger of Allah.” The video was 11 minutes long and called France a “party of Satan” and also made warnings for more “tragedies and terror.” “If the freedom of your speech is not restrained, then you should accept the freedom of our actions,” said Ansi.

Islam is a religion of peace. Through the multiple Islamic extremist attacks from 9/11 to Charlie Hebdo, that is one thing to keep in mind: the majority of Muslims do not support violence. According to EncounteringIslam.org, 93 percent of Muslims do not support extremist views of terrorism. However, a great number of Muslims did indeed support this attack. According to Inquisitr, 800,000 Muslim protesters marched through the Chechnya region of Russia in support of the attacks. Many carried signs saying, “Hands off our beloved Prophet,” and “Europe has only united us.” This is because of the fact that when the prophet is made fun of, certain Muslims feel that actions must be taken, which are sometimes violent.

NEWS FEAT OPIN SPORT It is the worst time of year in Kansas City. I am not talking about the cold weather. I am talking about the offseason. No Chiefs, no Royals, no Sporting. It may be KC fans’ least favorite time of year, but it is one of the most important, nevertheless. because of free agency.

the fifth quarter

The Chiefs have just started their offseason and are due for some big decisions. This might include the release of Tamba Hali in order to save money. This would hurt the team definitely, but not as much because of the performance of Justin Houston in the past couple years. Also, there’s a good chance there will be competition for backup quarterbacks. After recently signing Terrelle Pryor, they are now up to 5 quarterbacks and some are questioning if the Chiefs will keep Chase Daniel. Although they might need to cut Daniel, I don’t think they should because he is the one of the best backups you can get if Alex Smith gets hurt. He proved that in the San Diego game last season. The biggest need for the Chiefs this offseason is at WR. After a season with ZERO wide receiver touchdowns, the team is desperate for a someone other than a RB and TE that Smith can throw to. The other big need for the Chiefs is at the offensive line spot. Both positions are likely to be filled in the NFL draft. The only thing that is for sure is the team must have a productive draft or free agency to have a shot at the playoffs and Super Bowl 50 next season. For a small market team in a small city made mostly of small town players from the farm system, the Royals had a hell of a year. A small market team coming off a World Series seems like it has the potential for their dream offseason and free agency. The Royals fell short of those expectations but picked up some average players that could go either way. I think the way the players they picked up end up playing will determine whether the Royals will be a one and done team or not. It was necessary to not resign Shields in order to save some money, but the young pitchers like Ventura and Duffy will have to step up big time. The only regret I have is the Royals not resigning Billy Butler. Everyone has their opinion on Butler, but at the end of the season, Butler came through when he needed to and was a crucial part of the team. I think it was worth the extra money to resign him for at least another year or two. Kendrys Morales is the man the Royals signed to replace Butler, but he leaves a huge question mark for everyone. He could either be a huge bust or maybe even more of a player than what they paid for.

Sporting fans held their breath this offseason as it looked like a powerhouse team could turn into a nobody within days. With the relocation draft, expansion draft, and free agency, Sporting was forced to lose many of their contributing players to the teamalthough no one too huge. This included the release of their first and second string goalies: Eric Kronberg and Andy Gruenebaum. Notable players lost in the offseason also include Soony Saad, Sal Zizzo, Claudio Bieler, and even former MLS Cup MVP Aurelien Collin. Sporting was quick to turn things around, however; recently earning Bleacher Report’s best MLS offseason out of many other great offseasons for MLS teams. Many thought Sporting would lose Dom Dwyer to a European team after his breakout season, but surprisingly he stayed in the U.S. and resigned (maybe we have to thank his new USWNT girlfriend Sydney Leroux). Sporting also picked up many small players to fill in spots that look like they will perform well. The most notable was the homecoming of midfielder Roger Espinosa. With this Honduras national team elite player and his aggressiveness, Sporting is in a good position to become a top team once again.

Although it may not be the most exciting time of these hometown teams’ year, it will be interesting to see how their offseason and free agencies pan out. Kansas City sports will be back in play soon enough--KC fans will all just have to struggle through this hard time together.

Do we shed our First Amendment rights at the schoolhouse gate? The Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines decided that it would be unconstitutional to take away student's right to freedom of speech or expression. But over time this idea has become more and more limited. With other landmark cases like Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier that installed the ability in schools to regulate the printing of what can go in in a school's publication based on any sort of concern. While a phrase like,"Bong hits for Jesus", may be inappropriate, it did more than offend school

19

administrators. In the case Morse v. Frederick, the school confiscated a banner with those words and suspended Frederick, but did not violate his First Amendment right because they were protecting other student in the school from pro-drug use propaganda. What is the problem with these decisions? Over the course of less than 50 years since the Tinker v. Des Moines decision our rights and schools have been shrunk by almost every court decision made, allowing schools to decide what is okay to print in all school publications, saying it’s

okay to limit freedom of speech if there is some reasoning behind it, taking away things that the First Amendment of the constitution deems our right as citizens of the United States. Obviously one editorial isn’t going to be able to make big changes in the way schools are administered or the way government controls schools, but whether it is a terrorist attack in Paris or a battle over dress code, something needs to spark a conversation to make everyone appreciate and fight for the First Amendment rights we so often take for granted.

VALENTINE’S DATE NIGHTS by BRADY SMITH Winsteads

If you are like me, you don’t like it when your date has to spend too much money on you. You can make a simple date a lot of fun by going to Winsteads. I think that this is also a good place for a couple that just started talking but feel like they still want to celebrate Valentine’s Day together. It’s simple but you can still make a night out of it. It’s a ‘50s diner that takes you back to a time period that was known for cute, casual dates. You can never go wrong with burgers, fries and a milkshake. Their meals are an ultimate low at around $5.00. Winstead’s skyscraper milkshake can be shared with two people and it’s one of their most popular items. It is one of the more expensive things on the menu at $7.99 but its enormous size and great taste are well

worth it. Winsteads is also close to AMC Barrywoods 24 movie theater. You can add that to your date night, because only a small amount of money would be spent for dinner. The only downside to going to Winsteads is that you lose the glamorous side of Valentine’s Day. Also, the service isn’t extraordinary either. They are fast, but they treat you like you are at McDonald’s. The quality of the food is low, but the taste of the food is great. Overall, it’s an easygoing place and you will leave with your belly satisfied. I rate Winstead’s four hearts because it’s a cute, pleasing place but might not live up to Valentine’s expectations.

This is a little step up if you are looking for something different. Blue Koi is located on 39th Street and serves authentic asian food. It has a great location and you can pair the food with almost any activity downtown. When walking around 39th street, you can go to the record store, book store, or later get Miami Ice. It is for someone that wants to do something special but isn’t wanting to spend a lot of money. The average meal is around $10.00-$15.00. They are known for their Chicken Dumplings and I can honestly say that they are the best I have ever had.

The portion size is larger and you can share a meal with the person you go with. Their service is mediocre. They treat you well, but not exceptionally. You can expect a chill, friendly waiter or waitress. If I was going to Blue Koi I would wear something comfy cute. For instance, girls might wear a sweater and jeans and guys could wear a simple shirt and jeans. Blue Koi is a nice place to go if you are looking for a simple night filled with fun. However, it’s still not what I call the perfect date and for this reason I rate Blue Koi four hearts.

Blue Koi

Brio

Brio is somewhere you want to go if you plan on going above and beyond. If you are trying to make a bigger gesture, this is the one you should pick out of the three options. Brio is located on the Plaza and you can do many things paired with this dinner. You can go shopping, go to the movies, or even go ice skating down in Crown Center. The menu is obviously more expensive. If you are looking to save money then you are looking at the wrong place. The average meal at Brio is around $20.00-$30.00. The service at Brio is above all else. They are looking to impress you and of course they are looking for the tips as well. If you are going here, I would dress nice. Girls

should wear a dress and guys should wear a button up and nice pants. The pasta at Brio is what they are known for. You can tell that it is made with high quality, natural products. The taste never disappoints either. If you don’t want your date to spend too much money on you, I wouldn’t go here. This isn’t a very laid back date and the pressure might be higher than normal. This place is for a couple that have been dating awhile and are comfortable with one another. I wouldn’t say that this is a good first date spot. Brio will be high quality in every department there is. However, since I’m more of a down-to-earth girl, I would prefer something more chill. I give Brio three hearts for these reasons.

NEWS FEAT OPIN SPORT Friend zone: What you attain after you fail to impress a woman/man you’re attracted to. Friend zoning someone can be difficult sometimes. It usually happens when the guy gets the wrong idea about your intentions and you put him in the penalty box of dating. I think guys take being friend zoned too personally. Guys are fine with going from your best friend and strictly it being that and then switching to having a serious relationship with you. With girls, it isn’t exactly the same. Don’t get me wrong; plenty of good relationships start as a friendship and feelings start to develop from there. Though things can’t evolve if the girl doesn’t feel those deep feelings that the guy might have. Friend zoning a guy is nothing to feel bad about. Just because a girl friend zones a guy doesn’t mean that they think they’re not attractive; they just might not be her type. Unreturned feelings suck, and yes, this may cause you to feel bad, but you can’t force it. If it’s meant to be, it will be. It makes friend zoning a little more difficult when the guy isn’t picking up the hints. If you clearly have made it obvious that your intentions are to be nothing more than friends and he’s still dropping hints that he likes you, then that’s when friend zoning gets a little bit awkward. Saying things like, “you’re such a good friend!” or “I hope I find a guy just like you,” and doing things like pointing out other guys that are hot when you guys are together should get the job done. If not, be straight up. It’s not as bad as most think it is. No one likes a girl who talks bad about a guy to everyone else about how annoying it is that this guy won’t leave you alone, but then turn around go and flirt with him and lead him on when all her other boys are gone. If you’re trying to friend zone a guy don’t use him as your go to. This will mess with their feelings which is everything you want to avoid in these situations. Every girl has that one guy that watches you go from guy to guy, one bad relationship to another and is always there in the end. If you’re this guy, it’s more than likely that you’re in the friend zone. The worst case is when you are trying to friend zone a guy and he puts you in this ultimatum of; you either have to date me or we’re not going to be friends. People assume that just because a girl values a guy as a friend that they should be attracted to or date that guy. I’m not saying it’s bad to have a crush on a friend, but sitting around waiting around for her to realize that she should be with you and not the idiot who causes her to cry on your shoulder every other weekend isn’t the way to go about it. In the end yes, it does suck to have to friend zone a guy. Every girl tries to avoid it as much as they can but somehow every one of us are still put in this sticky situation. Sometimes guys just need to remember not to settle for that “friend zone” situation that makes both of the people in the friendship uncomfortable. Ladies, it’s not as bad as people make it. Have confidence! If you like a guy, go for it. If not then don’t force those feelings. In the end everything seems to work their way out.

The friendzone. Once you are put here, it is game over. You become a complete nonsexual entity to her, like her brother, or a lamp. This is the worst possible place a man can be put, it is actually somewhat of a blow to the ego when you learn that you have been put there... like a failed conquest, and now you are forced to go back to your friends and admit you have been defeated. Now many of you may find this hard to believe, but I myself--that’s right, Colby Horstmann-- have been friendzoned on multiple occasions. So that’s why I’m writing this month’s column, to tell you how to avoid this fate and what to do if you have fallen victim to the dreaded friendzone. I’ll start off with some tips on how to recognize that you have been friendzoned because it can be pretty hard sometimes. First, you have to know how to recognize subtle things, like the things that they tell you. If a girl tells you how she likes another guy, that is basically her waving a giant flag around that says “You’re in the friendzone.” Also, if she says how attractive other guys are to you, this is a pretty big indicator that you have been friendzoned. But of all the things that can be said, the most obvious one is “I wish I could find a guy just like you.” If you hear this, abort mission. You’re screwed. Secondly, you need to be able to pick up on how a girl feels about you without asking (this saves you the embarrassment of having to be told you are in the friendzone). You can tell that you have been friendzoned by how a girl acts with you. If a girl burps around you and seems proud of it, you’re definitely in the friendzone. Also, if she comes over to hang out and sits on the other side of the couch, this should raise some red flags. One way to for sure tell you are deep in friendzone is if she changes with you in the room. In fact, if she does that, you have entered a whole new level of the friendzone that is completely inescapable. This is known as the brother zone. Now for the tricky part. This is the very complicated and largely unsuccessful process of getting out of the friendzone. First, you have to break the “nice guy” stereotype. Most guys that find themselves in the friendzone fit under the “nice guy” stereotype. When you are always putting the other person’s feelings before your own, you are unconsciously communicating that your own feelings don’t matter. This makes them think that you have a low self esteem, which is the opposite of what you want to portray: confidence. Now I’m not saying to go out and start acting like a Tanner McClaran, but be confident and straight forward and tell them how you really feel. Next, don’t be afraid to touch them. I’m not telling you to come right out and just go for it all, but if you are terrified to even make physical contact with someone, you are never going to be anything more than friends with that person. A half hug when you’re leaving their house doesn’t count either. MAKE A MOVE. Put your hand on their leg, or put your arm around them, or if you’re really feeling bold go in for a kiss (probably not the first time you make contact with them though because you are more than likely to get rejected/slapped and that’s just embarrassing). In the end, no guy wants to be friendzoned. In fact, no guy really wants to just be friends with a girl. Even if it’s the slightest little thought in the back of his head, he’ll always have a thought about being more than friends. Yet, sometimes you have to accept the fact that you are in the friendzone and be mature about it. It’s better than nothing right?

ancers TAKE isney So you think you can dance? The South Side Girls sure think they can. South’s dance team headed down to Orlando on January 30 to strut their stuff and represent South in the ultimate competition, dance team Nationals. “I’m most excited to walk on the stage with my dance family knowing that we worked so hard to perform our best we ever have,” said Hope Mayo, senior. Dance Nationals were held at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., where the girls of South had the chance not only to compete but have a good time as well. “The team gets to stay in the park, go to some good restaurants and walk around Disney World after our competition,” said Sydney Lowe, junior. Although it may seem like fun and games, Dance team planned to get down to business. They competed against 80 other top teams from around the nation who had also gone through continuous rounds of qualifying. “Our goals are obviously to do well in the competition, but mostly we just want to feel proud of ourselves and know that we gave it 110 percent every step of the way,” said Mayo. Nationals didn’t come easy for the team, though. The team had to qualify and reach certain scores in competition earlier in the year as well as practice continuously. “I think we have a

The team made a solid showing at Nationals, making it to semi-finals in hip hop and jazz. “We wanted to go to Nationals in the first place to compete against amazing teams and show our talent and to learn and grow as a team from the experience,” said Mayo. Not only did the Southside Girls have to qualify, but they also had to fundraise in order to get enough money to get them to Nationals. The team did six big fundraisers and tried to make money however possible. “We funded nationals with lots of car washes, Chipotle fundraisers, and a fashion show,” said Lowe. Up next for the team is State where they will compete against local teams and continue to use their practice and experience from Nationals to compete for top spots in the State. “I think we have a good chance of placing top three in the State looking atwhat we’ve done so far,” said Webster. Just making it to Nationals proved the SSG were living up to the hype. With lots of dances to go, the team plans to continue to shake their way straight to the top.

black varsity letter: one of the most prestigious awards at South. A black letter indicates that you have won a Missouri State Championship, and this year, the South girl’s swim and dive team has their hearts set on black letters. The South girl’s swim and dive team is finishing their season as strong as they started. They were honored as the first Hy-Vee Team of the Week of 2015 and have an outstanding record of 14-0. Along with those accomplishments, nine of the swimmers and one diver have already qualified for State. To get to State as a swimmer, they must get a specific time or faster. To qualify as a diver, they must have a high degree of difficulty and score. The girls only have to make State cuts in one event to make it to state. Swimmers can swim in up to two events and relays, and the diver will be participating in 11 dives. Danielle Proffitt, junior, is the first diver to make it to State in five years from South. “I’m proud of myself because this is my first year diving,” she said. “I just did it for something to do. I didn’t expect to get this far. I just kept getting better.” Having a team as successful as the girls have been is difficult. They have to participate in morning and afternoon practices, along with keeping up with their school work and maintaining good grades. According to the competitors, State is an important event to make and the competition takes a lot of hard work and dedication, inside and outside of the water. “I’ve been swimming since I could start, about age

six. I wanted to get State cuts this year since my sister did as a freshman, so I didn’t goof around. I just swam,” said Paige Riekhof, freshman. Going to State in the past has taught some of the girls what to expect and more about each other. The girls participating say that it is important for them to keep a close bond so they can stick together and support one another at the competition. It is a lot of pressure, considering the team got third place last year. This year, they are aiming for first. “Last year, I learned about how to be a team and represent our school in a good and respectful way. The girls are really nice and we cheer each other on. It’s a close environment,” said Allison Garrett, sophomore, who has achieved State cuts in every single event. The pressure is intensified for some of the girls because this is their last shot. Being a senior on the team has a different feel since it is the last time they will be swimming with their team. “It’s weird thinking this will be one of my last major swim meets. I will do my best or else I’ll never know how good I can be. The hardest thing for me isn’t waking up or going to practice, it’s when I don’t perform as well. I have to forgive myself and accept everyone has bad meets and it doesn’t define me as a swimmer,” said Helen Yeater, senior. On February 20 and 21, the South swim and dive girls who qualified will be in St. Louis to give their all in state to see how their hard work will pay off--hopefully with a black letter.

HIGH H PS, HIGHER H PES South’s Lady Panthers are maintaining a good attitude with a difficult season New year. New team. New obstacles. Butterflies swarm the athletes’ stomachs when the clock hits game time. Girls basketball looked to get the year off to a great start. The Lady Panthers started off with some challenges but as the season progressed, the players are looking up. They are currently 7-9. “Around Christmas time we were 4-4. We lost a couple here in January but everyone is maintaining a good attitude,” said Coach Jenny Orlowski. Every sports team has struggles to overcome. Everyone handles their battles differently but some things cannot change. Even the best of athletes come across problems or struggles at one point or another in their career. “We have a severe height disadvantage. We have to do well on defense, double team them and not let it get to us,” said Sydney Baska, senior. The great thing about this year’s team of lady panthers is that everyone is especially close. Team atmosphere and team relationships are important to the overall success of winning the game, according to players and coaches. Most people excel in environments in which they feel needed and have a sense of belonging.

“My favorite part is hanging out with the team. We do a lot of bonding stuff together, we all hang out outside of school also. It is like one big family when we’re together,” said Mackenzie Stout, senior. When players are standing on the basketball court their goals differ from position to position. The Lady Panthers have high hopes for the season, and are ready to put forth the effort. “We definitely want to beat Staley in districts. We want to win districts and the Oak Park tournament,” said Erica Timmerman, senior. With their final season beginning to come to a close, the senior lady panthers have to show their coach, teammates, and fans all they’ve got to give. For most of them it will be their last time competitively playing basketball and want to make themselves known in the halls of South. It is their last chance. “I am going to miss the girls and the few seniors on the team, and just being really close with them all this year,” said Timmerman. These South athletes completely dedicate themselves to their sport. It is all about their perseverance, attitude and memories made of the game they loved.

“EVERY SPORTS TEAM HAS STRUGGLES TO OVERCOME. EVERYONE HANDLES THEIR BATTLES DIFFERENTLY.”
