Sea of Mist City, Beautiful Flowers, The Southernmost of Thailand, Attractive Borderland

“Betong” can be saying that it a unique name with identity location. Betong is a Melayu language, meaning bamboo that grows abundantly in and around Betong District. That’s why sculpture of Bamboo has become a symbol of Betong that is outstanding in Betong Municipality Park in the form of real bamboo trees. It was built up with concrete at its size of 3 meters in diameter and 9 meters in height. The sculpture represents a distinguished landmark that attracts tourists to visit Betong and experience its existence and its history.

Signboard of Southernmost of Thailand

It is located before the immigration checkpoint of Betong District of Thailand to Perak State of Malaysia. The signboard of Southern most Point of Thailand was built up from marble that was inscribed into the map of Thailand with distinguish description texts.

Clock Tower It has been a building with Betong for a long time, It was built up with marble from Yala in the shape of creatures from Thai literatures in Thai arts style. A fascination of this Clock Tower is the flocking of thousands of swifts birds on electric wires only at this Clock Tower especially during the nights in September -March. Those swifts birds escape cold weather from Siberia. The strange view of swifs birds on the wires around the Clock Tower in Betong has been a very attractive sight that most tourist must see.

World ’s Largest Poxt Box

In the past, going to and fro to Betong was quite endured, so sending letter was the most easy channel of communication. Mr.Sa-nguan Jirajinda, (the Mayor of Betong in that period), made up the symbol of Betong’s correspondence in a red cylinder post in larger size than any other post box. About 140 cm in perimeter and 290 cm in height and 320 meter in height including its platform. Radio speakers were attached on the upper part of the post box in order to broadcast news to the public. The post box is still in use in the present day. However, Betong Municupality already built up a new post box with 3.5 time larger in sizes which is located at Sala Chalerm Phrakiet 80 Pansa Building. No matter the size, the post box is for sending letter. Tips. The unique post box of Betong is located on the corner of Sukhayang Road. Betong Museum

It is another landmark of Betong where is easily found. It is located on a high hill near Phiromtat Pavilion, above Betong Monkollit Tunnel. It is a center that collects many artifacts that can signify to the history of Betong. Betong Museum displays many utensils such as earthenwares, loom, ancient lamps, table, closet, bed, music instruments, vase, and old photos of Betong. Moreover, Betong Museum is a popular photogenic point too.

Chalerm Phra Kiet King Rama IX Waterfall

It is situated among the evergreen forest where the freshwater and pond is available all year round. Previously, the waterfall is called Wangweng or lyerkem but later in 1999 that was the auspicious occasion of 72nd Birthday Anniversary of HM King Bhumibhol, so Iyerweng Sub-district Administration Organization changed the name of the waterfall to “Chalerm Phra Kiet King Rama IX Waterfall”

Betong Flower Garden, (SuanMuenBuppa) It is locally know as “Betong Flowers Garden” where is covering over 35 Rais of land in the area of Piyamits Village that was established by members of the village. It is located in valley where is about 800 meters high from sea level with average temperature of 18 degree Celsius. All plants and flowers are grown under the project of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn who gave a Chinese name to this garden “Wan Hua Yuan” that meant garden of ten thousands flowers. It got developed as an attraction where tourists from Thailand and Malaysia visit to see the beautiful flowers such as carnation, lily, chrysanthemum, roses, aster, peacock, gerbera, gladiolus,

The hot springs of Naga

It is a natural hot spring source caused by geothermal heat with abundant minerals. Also, in the area next to the hot springs, there is a beautiful waterfall with cool water flowing. It has been developed as a health tourism destination. There are services such as foot bath or immersion in the hot spring . There is a separate well that can be soaked in hot water that is heated .


Betong Hot Spring

A large natural hot springs in rich with mineral The temperature of the hot springs is about 80 degree Celsius that can produce an hard-boiled egg in 7 minutes. A large pool keeps water from the hot spring for bathing and foot spa. Bath room are also provided. It is believed that mineral water from the hot spring is a good treatment to skin disease muscle pains and aches, beriberi, etc. Betong Hot Spring has been completely develop with facilities and become a popular attraction of Betong It is located in Tambon Tanoh Maeroh where is about 5 KM. before the town of Betong on Highway 410 with a noticeable signboard.

Betong Monkollit It’s title “the first tunnel through mountain of Thailand” made the tunnel looked great with its dimension of 273 meters in length, 9 meter in width, 7 meters in height. The tunnel’s 7 meters road surface provides 1 meter wide walk way. The tunnel has been assisting in easy traffic and transportation of Betong from the town to its new town. Betong Mongkollit Tunnel has been a popular attraction among tourists from Thailand and Malaysia since it was launched in service.

Wat Buddhadhiwas (Royal Temple) It was formerly named “Wat Betong” which was built up in 1917 with cooperations of Phra Pitakthani, Mr.Pum Kotcharit (District Chief Officer), Mr.Kumsui Fungsathien, and Mr.Pol Supap. The temple got the royal granted Visungkhamsima on 13 February 1953. The major attractions of the temple are Phra Mahathart Chedi Phra Buddha Dharmma Prakart, Phra Buddha Dharmmakaya Mongkol Prayoon Kesanonda Supapithan, Viharn Luang Pu Thuart, Viharn Phra Khru Pisit Atthakarn, including the ubosoth and sermon hall.


Guan Yin Temple and 7-level Chedi This a place of faith where is related to Chinese descendants. It was established in 1966 with donations from faithful followers to build up Guan Yin Temple with distinguished 7-level chedi. A lot of tourists visit the temple and pay respect to and ask for blessings from Guan Yin.

Hala-Bala Rain Forest Research & Development Center. This Center was established regarding to the project of HM Queen Sirikit of forest conservation campaign to keep the fertile forest of Thailand. The environment of this center has been one of the most fertile forest of Thailand that is now the Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is the habitat of many species of wildlife such as

Sumatran rhinoceros, Siamang, Rhinoceros hornbill, Helmeted hornbill, as well as rare plants such as Johannesteijsmannia altifrons, tree fern, etc It also provides a boat trip to see the fertile forest and wildlife along waterside lands such as gaur, hornbill and the amazing colorful forest.


Piyamit Tunnel

The tunnel was dug in 1976 that was used as an operation base and the escape place from air strike, as well as a provision station. It is locate on a hill surrounded by thick forest. The tunnel is about 1 KM long tunnel was built to shelter a group of communist guerillas in Malaya after the World War 2. The tunnel is 50-60 feet wide and can hold up to 200 people. Inside the tunnel is still intact in the original format, almost all. There bedrooms, dining room radio communications and medical service. Also the tunnel inside is cool and well installed with electricity. The area around the tunnel showcasing the lifestyle of the native people and interesting history of place, and outside here has led to the most sacred trees near the tunnel. Where the Malaysian often come to pray and walk through the trees as they believed that it will help strengthen a pass to themselves. Betong-Yala 31



Iyerweng Morning Mist (Mount Microwave) It has been a very top morning mist view of Thailand, a new landmark of Betong, located on the peak of Mount Microwave where is also the situation of TV Transmission Station. It is about 612 meters high from sea level. Every early morning, there will be a lot of both Thai and foreign tourists especially Malaysian tourists that visit the place for a beautiful morning mist

covering over mountain ranges. Such a beautiful view can be admired 360 among morning cool air that makes everyone happy for each visit. Iyerweng Morning Mist is located far 40 KM. from Betong town along Highway 410 (Yala-Betong), and take the way to the peak for 7 KM. Betong-Yala 33


Kunung Silipat Moring Mist

360 View of Morning Mist at Kunung Silipat Peak Mount Kunung Silipat (Mount KM21) is distinguished peak surrounding by morning mist all around. It is 607 meters high from sea level. It need to take a drive and drop off in a rubber estate before walking for 3 KM and stay overnight near the peak. Walking further for 200 meters along

mountain ridge on nature track with holding rope to the peak where is about 80 square meters offering 360 panoramic view. Mount Kunung Silipat is located about 21 KM from Betong town along Highway 410 (Yala – Betong). It is accessible by 2 ways : from Tambon Iyerweng and from Tambon Tanoh Maeroh.


Sea of Mist, Kapae Hulu – Gunung Pa Long Sea of Mist “Ka Pae Hu Lu”, a viewpoint The sea of mists of two countries has a height of 712 meters. From the sea level is the highest among the sea mist viewpoints in Betong District, near the border between Thailand and Malaysia so it can be called the sea of mist of two countries.

Jarokanga, Sea of Mist Jarokanga, Sea of Mist was covered in a sea of mist. A new tourist attraction and a place to witness the nearest sea of mist to the city, as well as the sea of mist that spans both Thailand and Malaysia. The first light of the day may be seen through the mist. The district may be seen in the late morning. In the whole city, there is betong.

Fruits & Local Food

of Betong

Betong Chopped Chicken Betong Chopped Chicken, a delicious and famous food of Betong. It is a special menu which the tourists should not miss.It is also can be prepared to any styles of cook such as boiled chicken with Chinese herb or fermented lemon, chicken tomyam, and boiled chicken with soy sauce. Betong chicken is saoft and sweet , but different from others.The distinction of Betong Chicken is ; male has light yellow mouth, but female has dark brown. It has bright swell eyes, broad chest, big leg, round hard face, and yellow grey nails. Besides, it is a symbol of Betong. Betong-Yala 37


Kao Yok Kao Yok is a famous food of Betong. It made from pork and taro root. The process of making Kao Yok is being with boil pork, drain, stab its skin by fork and let its oil flow. Then, mix it with salt and fry it in boiled oil. When its skin become inflate, we drain and boil it again. After that, we have to make it cool suddenly for increase its crisp. Then, cut it in small pieces and ferment with Chinese herb. Later, arrange pork and taro root alternately. Before serve, we have to steam it again.

Hill Frog Betong shill Flog is lives in mixed forest. It has the bigger size than other frogs. Its weight is 0.5 – 1.0 kilogram per one. Betong people likes to fried it with garlic and pepper. Sometimes, they put it in boiled rice instead of pork. Its taste is very good. If you try it, you will fascinated.


Pak Nam (Watercress) Pak Nam is similar to aplum and grow like morning glory, but is has smaller leaves. Its stem looks like full of water. It likes to grow in a cold place and well grow in rainy and winter with the temperature is not over 25 cc. and a tide flowing from the hill all the time, especially from stone crack. Betong people like to cook every kind of Pak Nam menu such as fried Pak Nam, soup, boiled and served with chili sauce. Also, its taste is good and it is a medicinal to cure aphthous ulcer.

Chao Kuay (Grass Jelly) Chao Kuay or Grass Jelly is famous at Ban 4th kilometer because it has the real taste of grass jelly. The important composition of Chao Kuay is black jelly grass from China, it cause jelly black and soft. The process of making Chao Kuay is boiled black jelly grass with water, then filter for separate black jelly grass from water. Water would became black, pour cassavas while water still hot, mix it and water will becomes jelly for a few minutes. After that, cut it in small pieces, serve with syrup and ice or fill sala aroma. It taste is good and it can be cure internal heat and fever, too. Betong-Yala 39


Shogun Oranges It is a kind of orange that consists of many outstanding tastes: sweet smell, sour-sweet, soft meat and thin husk. Each orange produces more orange juice than other do. It generally looks like tangerine and mandarin orange from China which its taste is better than others.

Jee Chong Fun Jee Chong Fun is one local food of Betong. Some calls White noodles or Thang Taek noodles It is same as Chinese noodles but lighter than Chinese noodles. It made from rice, milled to be flour, mix with water, and take to steam in a sheeting steamer. When they are already cooked, they cut it in small pieces not over 1 centimeter. Then, cooked it with soy sauce, fill white sesame and fried garlic.


Durain It is a major economic plant of Betong which is popular for both Thai and foreigners. Because of the abundance of mineral in the soil, warm and humid and plentiful water resource, it makes the durain has a good taste for all strains such as Monthong, Kanyao, Chani, Puangmani and Moosungking (Moa Sa King).

Betong Vermicelli Noodle Tough and soft are the distinct qualifications of Betong Noodle. Betong people mix wheat flour with water and salt, take it in roll machine and press it to be sheet. After that, slice it as thread and steam it for two hours. When it is already ripe, they lump and take it to sundried, last packed it in plastic bag. Betong Noodle are not to be torn easily, because of this, it is popular to cooked in many kinds of food. Betong-Yala 41
