Welcome from Governor of Phuket
Sawadee krap and welcome to the 2011 Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship at Laguna Phuket, Thailand. Phuket is honored to host this prestigious event for the second year running. Last year we watched eagerly as more than 800 agegroup and professional athletes competed for this inaugural half Ironman title, and we hope this year’s race will prove just as challenging and rewarding as the first. To those who have travelled to Phuket to support the athletes, we hope your stay here is an enjoyable one. Our island province offers plenty to see and do, whether it’s relaxing on one of our beautiful beaches or exploring the historical streets of Phuket Town. And wherever you go, you’re bound to be greeted with a smile. Thank you to the numerous organisations and individuals who have made this event possible. We value your contribution and look forward to your involvement in this fantastic event in years to come. A race like the Ironman 70.3 requires strength of character, but most of all passion. In Thai we call this Long - Lai. Thank you for sharing your passion with us and we wish you all the best for a most successful race day.
Welcome to the 2011 Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship
On behalf of the team at Laguna Phuket, I would like to extend a warm welcome to this year’s contingent of Ironman 70.3 competitors and supporters. Last year was the first time we played host to this event and we are proud to say it was a resounding success. Every mile you swam, cycled and ran inspired us to once again deliver a race that encourages the very best out of each competitor. We have also harnessed your enthusiasm this year by launching our latest community initiative, the Laguna Phuket Survival Swim programme. With your help this programme will teach vital water-survival skills to thousands of children in our surrounding district over the next 12 months. Drowning remains the highest cause of death for Thai children under the age of 15, so this is an extremely meaningful project. Thank you to those who have already raised money through our online sponsorship channels. Phuket’s popularity as a holiday destination continues to soar in various overseas markets and at Laguna Phuket, we are thrilled to be able to provide our guests with a vibrant, integrated resort destination that is well worth the journey. Our week-long Tri-Fest – which concludes at the Awards Party on 4 December – has proven popular, with many athletes taking advantage of the practice sessions and social occasions on offer. This year we welcome back the 2011 Ironman 70.3 world champion Melissa Rollison to Phuket, along with last year’s Asia-Pacific winner Caroline Steffen. We’re also looking forward to seeing last year’s Laguna Phuket Triathlon winners Massimo Cigana and Belinda Granger compete for top honours. Our co-sponsors – the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Airways International, Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation and the Government of Phuket Province – are integral to keeping the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship on Phuket’s annual sporting calendar and we thank them for their continued support. To all the competing athletes, good luck and best wishes for the race. We will be cheering for you 100 percent of the way.
Welcome Athletes, Race day is here. On behalf of all of us in the Ironman family, I’d like to congratulate you on making it to the starting line here at the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship. We understand the importance of today’s race to you, and we stand ready to ensure you have the best experience possible. Your diligence in training and preparing for this race is something to be proud of, and simply being at the starting line is an accomplishment. We hope you have the race that you’ve trained for. This course and setting is unlike any other, as are the challenges and successes you will encounter along the way. Since its inception in 1978 on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, Ironman has made history with distinguished events and inspirational participants. Over time, we have developed as a sport and as a community. Introduced in 2006, the Ironman 70.3 Series has grown to include more than 50 events, offering exciting races around the world. Embrace the experience and unique memories this venue has to offer. On behalf of the entire Ironman team, we wish you the best of luck on race day. Sincerely,
Andrew Messick Chief Executive Officer World Triathlon Corporation

2011 IRONMAN 70.3 ASIA-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP 5
Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Series
Introduced in 2010, the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship series consists of seven events, including the Asia-Pacific Championship race held here at Laguna Phuket, Thailand. The series is part of a world-wide Ironman 70.3 programme, which has grown to include more than 50 events offering exciting race opportunities around the world. This year, the Asia-Pacific Championship event has scored a major coup by securing 30 qualifying slots from the World Triathlon Corporation for next year’s Ford Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Laguna is one of only a few worldwide Ironman 70.3 races offering 2012 Kona slots for winners of age group categories; and the only one in Asia-Pacific. Contested each October on a lava landscape course considered one of the world’s toughest, the legendary Ironman World Championship is regarded as the “Holy Grail” of triathlons and its entry slots are coveted by triathletes worldwide. The qualifying slots for Kailua-Kona will add fuel to the Asia-Pacific Championship race, which many athletes regard as a favourite due to its venue, organisation and tourism experience. The race once again incorporates its trademark two-bodies of water swim course, including a section in the Andaman Sea, a beach run-over and a section in a resort lagoon. The bike course is both challenging and spectacular with hilly sections and winding rural roads through rubber plantations and villages. The two-loop flat run includes Resort roads, paved paths and grass golf-course sections to challenge each competitor. This year’s race is bound to excite, with a 30-strong professional field, including Ironman 70.3 World Champion Melissa Rollison, reigning Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Champion Caroline Steffen and 2010 Laguna Phuket Triathlon winner Belinda Granger. The men’s race will feature top pros Michael Raelert, a two-time Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Chris Lieto, Faris Al-Sultan, and Cameron Brown who will battle it out for the Asia-Pacific title. Like last year, 45 qualifying slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, held on a challenging Las Vegas course in September, will also be on offer. 6 IRONMAN 70.3 ASIA-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP 2011

No swimmer shall return to the race if the official rendering assistance requests that the athlete withdraws from the race or receive medical assistance. 10. The swim course will be CLOSED 1 hour and 10 minutes after the athlete’s actual wave start time. After 1 hour and 10 minutes athletes will not be permitted to continue in the event. 11. 2011 has been a milestone year for the 31-year-old who, in October, became the first Thai triathlete to compete in back-toback Ironman 70.3 and Ironman World Championship races. Jaray’s Ironman World Championship debut in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii was all the more remarkable as it was his first-ever full Ironman challenge. He crossed the finishing line in a time of 11:04:35 after a swim of 1:04:35; bike time of 5:48:27; and run of 3:51:22. Jaray is an inspiration to his fellow Thai triathletes and colleagues at Laguna Phuket, where he works as a marketing executive for Laguna Holiday Club. Jaray says: “It was always my dream to take part in a full Ironman – I just didn’t expect my first one to be the World Championship in Kona alongside some of my biggest heroes. It was the toughest experience of my life and I’m so happy to have completed it. “Kona and the Las Vegas Ironman 70.3 were incredible experiences and I’m so grateful to Laguna Phuket for helping to make my dreams come true.” Jaray was sponsored by Laguna Phuket and Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club where he trains, to compete in Hawaii, Las Vegas and the Philippines 70.3, where he qualified for the two world championship events. He is now looking forward to an exciting 2012 race season, in which he hopes to achieve personal best performances and embark on his second Kona challenge. Good luck Jaray! 2011 IRONMAN 70.3 ASIA-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP 23
Phuket – an amazing part of
‘Amazing Thailand’
Phuket is a traveler’s dream destination. With plenty of sunshine, stunning beaches, mouth-watering food, fabulous shopping, fun festivals and world-class events, you’re bound to find everything you want – and more – on this tropical island paradise. History
In the early Christian era, the cape of Phuket was locally referred to as Jung Ceylon, while locals called it Thanlng, which evolved to Thalang, the name of the main town to the north of the island. As the perfect stopover sheltering traders from monsoons, Jung Ceylon welcomed merchants from India, Persia, Arabia, Burma, China and also Siam. During the 16th century, the island was also a popular trading port for tin. In 1785, Thalang town was surrounded by Burmese troops who invaded the coastal area. It was under the leadership of Chan, the widow of the governor, and her sister, Muk, who united the local residents and successfully fought and drove the invaders out of Phuket. It took over 30 days for the defending troops of Phuket, under the command of Chan and Muk, to claim their victory. As a result of such heroic deeds, noble titles were granted to Chan and Muk as ‘Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Sri Soonthorn, respectively. They are still highly respected by Phuket residents even today and commemorated at the Heroines monument. When the city was in a peaceful state, mining commenced. Chinese businessmen and miners migrated to Phuket and soon began to enjoy thriving wealth. The island’s long history has shaped the distinctive Phuket of the present with its diverse ethnic groups, culture, architectural influence, and fine cuisine. Phuket has a lot more to offer its visitors than its natural heritage of sea, sand, blue sky, forest, and world renowned diving sites. Sino-Portuguese architecture casts its spell delighting travellers to the city, while the Phuket style of hospitality has never failed to impress visitors from all walks of life.
Activities
As one of Thailand’s premier tourist destinations, Phuket has countless activities on offer and sights to explore, ensuring visitors are well entertained on their Phuket holiday. Here are some things to do in Phuket:
Buddha Temple or Wat Pra Yai
Situated atop Nag Gerd Hill in the south of the island the 25.45 meter wide and 4-meter tall Buddha temple faces 19 degrees northeast and is considered a landmark respected by both the people of Phuket and visitors alike.
Phang Nga Bay
Spectacular Phang Nga Bay is best explored by kayak and is known for its giant stalactites, caves and limestone cliffs. Visit the Laguna Tours sales desk at your hotel for more information on Phang Nga Bay day trips. 24 IRONMAN 70.3 ASIA-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP 2011
Old Phuket Town
Famed for its Sino-Portuguese architecture, Phuket Town offers visitors a unique slice of Phuket history along with quaint cafes, art galleries, tailors, local delicacies and more.
Promthep Cape
This peninsula, at the southern edge of Phuket, is the largest cliff on the island and a beautiful place to watch the sun set.
Chaofa Variety Market – Phuket Town
The Chaofa Variety Market held from 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays is Phuket’s largest outdoor market featuring local street food, clothing, arts and crafts, accessories, home ware and even pets.
Food & Drink
Most restaurants on Phuket serve a variety of cuisines, including Thai and international foods. Most guesthouses and resorts have restaurants that serve both, while in the more popular beaches, such as Patong, there are restaurants specialising in various international cuisines, such as Italian and German. Beachside, seafood barbeque restaurants are also common, as dining on fresh seafood is certainly a Phuket attraction. Thanks to the diversity of visitors to Phuket and the variety of restaurants established to cater to them, tourists are hardly starved for choice when dining on Phuket. Even vegetarians are in for a treat as Phuket’s local residents celebrate a vegetarian festival around September/October each year.
Shopping
As in most other Thai tourist destinations, Phuket features outstanding shopping opportunities, from street markets to shopping malls, and visitors can buy souvenir products from all over Thailand, such as Thai silk and chopstick sets, or essential beach supplies, such as swimwear, sun block, and
children’s beach toys. Locally produced handicrafts that are popular with visitors to Phuket include cultured pearls, nielloware, pewterware, and dried seafood. Specialist shops dealing in souvenir products can be found in and around Phuket Town and at the more popular beaches of Patong, Kata, Karon, and Rawai. There are various other shopping districts in isolated inland areas of Phuket as well. Jung Ceylon Shopping Centre, set in the heart of Patong, is home to more than 300 shops organised in zones for fashion, entertainment and dining. Central Festival Phuket is the second major shopping complex on the island, bursting with world-class fashion labels, entertainment, and a variety of sumptuous international cuisine.
International Events
Every year Phuket plays host to a number of international sporting and cultural events. Along with the Laguna Phuket Triathlon, Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship and the Laguna Phuket International Marathon all held at Laguna Phuket, Phuket also attracts visitors from all over the world for the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour at Karon Beach in November and Asia’s biggest and most popular sailing event, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta. The weeklong regatta has been held every year during the first week of December since it was inaugurated in 1987 to mark the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand. Held in November, the Phuket International Sportfishing Tournament at Chalong Bay in Southern Phuket is also a popular event among both locals and visitors. And for music lovers, the annual Phuket International Blues Rock Festival, which will be held at Laguna Phuket in February 2012, is a must-see.
SURVIVAL SWIM: Giving Phuket children the tools to survive Survival floating, back floating and treading water are all types of water flotation techniques designed to help you relax and survive in water. Sadly, many Thai children do not get an opportunity to learn these essential life skills, which is why drowning remains the major cause of death of Thais under the age of 15*. At Laguna Phuket, we want this to change. We’re situated in a coastal region and as Phuket’s largest employer, it’s important that our local community feels confident and safe in the water. That’s why we’ve launched our Survival Swim programme. Over the next 12 months, we hope to teach more than 2,600 Thai children the crucial water skills they need to survive a life-threatening situation. Through sponsorship of both the Laguna Phuket Triathlon and Ironman 70.3 competitors, we are aiming to raise THB 600,000 to fund over 70 survival swim lessons for children aged 12 to 15 in Thalang district schools – the district around Laguna Phuket. Any extra money raised will be used to teach additional, younger children. The lessons will take place in the waters of Bang Tao bay, Cherngtalay Municipality swimming pools and at Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club. The programme is being implemented with support from the Phuket Lifeguard Club, the Government of Phuket Province, Phuket Public Health Office, Secondary Educational Service Area Office 14, Phuket Primary Educational Service Area Office, Cherngtalay Municipality, Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club, and Laguna Holiday Club.
