UNIT1 PART 3 READING 3.1 Read the article. Then follow instructions. Before you read. 1. Write down three reasons why people travel abroad. Compare ideas with the class. Do you think traveling can become addictive? 2. Read the title and the introduction to the article. When do people usually have gap years? Why do you think it’s hard to come home after a year away?
Travel Addict Gap years are not just for young people. But before you give up your job, remember that coming home is the hardest part,’ says travel addict Ben Williams. My name is Ben. I am 32 years old and I am a travel addict. I’ve been back home now for almost six months, but I know that I will always be an addict. If I see just on travel brochure, I know I will want to go away again. Two years ago I was on an island in Fiji, at the start of a year-long break that took me and my girlfriend,
After you read. 3. Read about Ben and his friends. Underline the mistakes in the summaries.
Jane, to 14 countries. We watched fireworks over the Sydney Opera House at New Year, saw the sun rise over the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and spent my 3rd birthday on a Thai beach.
Ben Ben returned from his travels just three months ago and now he wants to go travelling again. He spent two years travelling with his girlfriend, Jane. They visited 31 countries, including Australia, Fiji and Vietnam and got married on a beach in Thailand. It was the best time of their lives but now they are happy to settle down back home. Sandie and Ian Ben met Sandie and her boyfriend, Ian, when he was in Syney. They are hoping to marry next year and spend a year travelling again on their honeymoon. They both have stressful jobs as lawyer but they enjoy their work. Rebecca Ben met Rebecca when she was working for a computer company in Australia. Now she’s back home and looking for work. She’s enjoying telling all her friends and family about her time abroad.
It was without doubt the best year of our lives. No work, no boss, no worries. No grey skies of Britain, just carefree months going into the distance. True, there wasn’t much money, but it didn’t matter. We loved having the freedom to go where we wanted, when we wanted. If we liked a place, we stayed. If not, we just got the next bus out. We only had worry in the world. We knew we had to return to Britain.
“We loved having the freedom but coming back was awful”
Coming back was awful. We had huge debts, and we had to find work. The routine of getting to work, going home, eating, sleeping, and getting up again is just about killing me. I’m finding it difficult to do what other people tell me to do.
12
Before I went travelling, I worried about earning more money, buying a bigger car, a house, etc. Now that I’m back, I don’t care about those things any more. I’m living like a student again, and saving all my money. As soon as I have enough, I’ll be off on my next trip round the world. Sandie & Ian’s story… While I was travelling, I met other people like me. Sandie, 28 and Ian,33, got married and spent a year travelling on their honeymoon. We met on a beach in Thailand. They were both IT consultants with stressful jobs. Now that they are home, they are making big changes to their lives. ‘Work just isn’t so important anymore,’ says Sandie. ‘But I suppose we’ll have to stay in these jobs Until we find a day to escape. Rebecca’s story… I met Rebecca,26, in Australia during her round-the-world trip. Now she’s back home, and she’s also having trouble readjusting to life. ‘It’s terrible,’ she says. ‘During the first couple of weeks back at work, I couldn’t sit at my computer. Nobody understands.
My
parents
and
friends just aren’t interested in my experiences. I don’t know why. It was such an important time in my life. I keep looking at my photos, so that I won’t forget’. For me too, I wonder if life back home will ever feel normal again. Next week I’m starting an evening course to learn Spanish. And when I’ve finished that, I’ll start Portuguese. They’ll be very useful languages in South America!
What do you think. 4. Why do people become travel addicts? Do you think they are looking for something or running away from something? 5. Why are travelers’ friends and family often not interested in their experiences?
Discussion 6. Make a list of five places in the world you’d like to go to. Say Why. 7. In groups compare your lists. Discuss as a class which are the most popular places.

UNIT2 PART 1
Customs Worldwide Obligation and Permission We use “must” to talk about something that is necessary or important.
Leaving some currency on a restaurant table is a common way of giving a tip to the serving staff.
“You must dress properly in a temple.” We use “should” to say something which is a good idea, or it is appropriate. “You should try this ice cream. It’s delicious.” * Should is weaker than Must. It is often used to give advices, suggestions and opinions because it sounds more polite.
We use “can” to talk about something

that is permitted. “In Latin America, you can kiss both men and women on their cheek.”
Gov. Ritter exchanges business cards with one of the Gifu University officials.

READING 1.1 Read the following text and check your comprehension with True or False. People who travel to the United States quite often forget to tip. It is usual to tip porters, taxi drivers, and waiters. Waiters expect to get a 15% tip on the cost of your meal. Taxi drivers expect about the same amount. In England, make sure to stand in line (‘queue’) even if there are only two including you. It’s important to respect lines there. It’s a good idea to talk about the weather. It’s a favorite subject of conversation with the British. In Spain, it’s advisable to have a light snack in the afternoon if someone invites you for dinner. People eat meals very late, and restaurants do not generally open until after 9 P.M. In Arab countries, men kiss one another on the cheek. Your host may welcome you with a kiss on both cheeks. It is polite to do the same. In Japan, you should be prepared to exchange personal or business cards. When a person gives you a card, don’t keep it into your pocket right away. The person expects you to read it and even comment on it. It is impolite not to do so. In most Asian countries, people do not touch, or show any sign of affection in public. For example, remember not to pat a child on the head to show your affection or appreciation. Don’t forget to be careful of your hand gestures or other body language to express something in conversation. A gesture that is acceptable in one culture may be offensive in another. _____ 1. You should always remember to tip in the United States. _____ 2. You must not discuss the weather in England. _____ 3. You cannot kiss a person in public in Asia. _____ 4. You should go out to dinner early in Spain. _____ 5. You should carry business cards with you in Japan.

and children dress up in funny clothes and masks. They go round the house, ring the door-bells and say: “Trick or Treat”. People give them some candies, fruits, money or they play a trick, like writing on windows with soap, ringing the door-bell, spraying shaving cream on cars, dumping garbage cans. People make faces out of large pumpkins and put candles inside: this is called Jack O’ lantern. They cut out ghosts, specters and even skeletons and hang them on their windows. Teenagers in middle school and high school have a Halloween party and dance all together. The party is in the evening in the school gymnasium. Typical Halloween foods are nuts, popcorns, pumpkin pies, liquorices, sweets and candied apples. The Halloween drink is apple cider. After the school party, everyone helps to clean up.

Participants of the festival dress up like ghosts and monsters wearing huge masks made carved coconut-tree trunks, topped with a wicker-work sticky-rice steamer. The procession is marked by a lot of music and dancing. The precise origin of the Phi Ta Khon is unclear. However, it can be traced back to a traditional Buddhist folklore. In the Buddha's next to last life, he was the beloved Prince Vessandorn. The prince was said to go on a long trip for such a long time that his

When he suddenly returned, his people were overjoyed. They welcomed him back with a celebration so loud that it even awoke the dead who then joined in all the fun. From that time onward the faithful came to commemorate spirit masks. The reasons behind all the events is probably due to the fact that it was held to evoke the annual rains from the heavens by farmers and to bless crops. On the second day, the villagers dance their way to the temple and fire off the usual bamboo rockets to signal the end of the procession. The festival organizers also hold contests for the best masks, costumes and dancers, and brass plaques are awarded to the winners in each age group. The most popular is the dancing

Then comes the last day of the event, the villagers then gather at the local temple, Wat Ponchai, to listen to the message of the thirteen sermons of the Lord Buddha recited by the local monks. Then it is time for the travelers to put away their ghostly masks and costumes for another year. From now on, they must again return to the paddy fields to eke out their living through as their forefathers did.

UNIT4 PART 1 READING 1.1 Before you read. Discuss the picture in small groups. •
Name the places, things, and people.
•
Describe the picture. Where is the place? Where are the people from? What do they do?
1.2 Think about the answers to these questions. The reading answers them. •
What are international students? What are institutions of higher learning?
•
Where do most international students go to college or university?
•
Why do students want to attend colleges or universities far from home?
•
Why do institutions of higher learning want students from other countries?
70
1.3 Read the passage and find definitions of the underlined terms.
International Students All around the world, there are international students at institutions of higher learning. The definition of an international student is “a postsecondary student from another country.” The meaning of postsecondary is “after high school.” Another phrase for international student is “foreign students”. The word foreign means “of a different country or culture”. Even so, some people don’t like the foreign, so they use the phrase “international students.” For institution of higher learning, they usually say “university,” “college,” or “school.” International students leave their home countries and go to school abroad. One meaning of the word abroad is “in a foreign place.” By far, the country with the most students from abroad is the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and some European countries also have a lot of students from other countries. But more and more, students from around the world attend colleges and universities in the developing nations of Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Developing nations don’t yet have a high level of industrialization or technology. Why do high school and college graduates go to colleges and universities far from their homes? Undergraduates are postsecondary students without college degrees. Often, undergraduates want the experience of life in new cultures. Maybe they want to learn another language well, in school and in real life. Many older students want degrees in business, engineering, or technology. These subjects are not always available in their home countries. Some governments and companies send their best graduate students and workers to other countries for new knowledge and skills. And some students from expensive private schools at home save money through study abroad, especially in developing nations. Why do institutions of higher learning want international students? Of course, students from other countries bring internationalism to the classroom or campus. They bring different languages, customs, ideas, and opinions from many places around the world. Usually, they study hard. Also, educational institutes need money. Tuition is the fee or charge for instruction, and private schools everywhere charge high tuition. One definition of citizens and immigrants is “legal members of a nation or country.” International students are not citizens or immigrants, so they pay full tuition and fees to state or government schools. And all students away from home spend money for housing, food, recreation, and other things. For these reasons, many schools and groups of schools want students from other countries.

I am therefore enclosing my resume with a recent photograph for your consideration. I feel that I am well-qualified for the position. I am a Thai male, of 23 years old. UNIT5 PART 2 Application Letter address, date, salutation, complimentary close, signature and envelope 1. The address When writing the address, it is now customary not to use punctuation at the end of the lines. Only punctuate when you abbreviate (eg. St. instead of ‘Street’ or Ltd. instead of ‘Limited’). Eg.
33 Soi 2 Nimmanheimin Rd. Tambon Suthep Chiang Mai 50200
If you have an e-mail address, add it under the postal address. 2. The date There are several ways of writing the date: June 1 2008 or June 1st 2008 1 June 2008 or 1st June 2008 1/6/2008(UK) or 6/1/2008(US) To avoid confusion, avoid writing the month in numbers. 3. The salutation If you know the receiver’s name, you should write it: (eg. Dear Mr Black, Dear Ms Smith). If you are sure a woman is married, you may use Mrs, if sure she’s unmarried, Miss, but both are old-fashioned & considered sexist by many people, so Ms is usually preferred. If you do not know the receiver’s name, and you are not sure whether the receiver is male or female, the salutations Sir or Madam are used, as follows: Dear Sir or Madam
=
man or woman, if name not known
Dear Sir
=
man, name not known
Dear Madam
=
woman, name not known
4. Complimentary Close In British English the complementary close (signature) appears on the left, not the right, and when the saluting is Dear Sir, (ie. without a name) the complimentary close must be Yours faithfully. However, this is not obligatory in American English. Other formal complimentary closes are: Yours sincerely, Sincerely (yours), Respectfully (yours), Truly yours, etc. Like the salutation, the complimentary close is traditionally followed by a comma, but this is now optional.
102
5. Signature Beneath your signature in a formal letter you should type your name in case your signature is not legible. If you hold a position in a company, you should also include your title. Eg.
David Mann
N K Borer
David Mann
Ms N K Borer
Sales Manager
Assistant Manager
When writing the address, it is now customary not to use punctuation at the end of the lines.
6. Envelope Note that the envelope carries the receiver’s address, as in the letter itself, written in the center of the plain side. The sender’s address may also be written on the envelope, in the corner or on the back, as long as the two are not confusing. The typing should always be single spaced.

Job Interview Typical Interview Questions & Answers There are usually four types of question topics the interviewer may ask you about: - Yourself - Your qualifications/abilities/experience - How much you know about the company and the job - Your on-the-job skills –for example, solving a problem 1. Questions about yourself -Tell me something about yourself. -Please introduce yourself -Have you traveled much? -How do you usually spend your free time? -Which part of Thailand are you from? How to answer: This type of question is usually asked at the beginning. The interviewer just wants to help you feel less nervous. So smile and try to look relaxed. Don’t speak too quickly, and at the same time don’t speak for too long. Do not simply repeat obvious details about yourself that the interviewer already knows, such as “My name is...” “I am… years old”. Possible answer: “I’ve just graduated from university with a degree in English, and I’m keen to start work in a suitable job. I enjoy speaking English, and I’ve had a lot of experience dealing with foreigners, so I hope I can find a job where I can use my English language ability.” 2. Questions asking about your qualifications/abilities -What makes you think you’d be suitable for this job? -How will you contribute to our company? -Why should we hire you? -How confident do you feel about your English? How to answer: Do not simply give direct statements about your personality, such as “I am a friendly, hard working person,” as the interviewer has no way of knowing If these statements are correct, and they sound rather boastful. Mention your strengths and achievements and give examples as to how they have contributed to your success. Possible answers: (management trainee) “I’m very interested in business. I took several courses in business administration at university. I’d like to work in management, and this seems like a very good opportunity to be trained in this field.” (secretary) “I’m quite confident of my English. I’ve been speaking English in my classes at university, and to American exchange students there, so I’m sure I can communicate well. And I’ve taken several courses in Business English, so I feel confident in handling correspondence where I will need to write in English for your company.”
107
UNIT5 PART 3 3. Questions asking how much you know about the company -Why do you want to work in our company? -Why are you interested in this position? -What interests you most about this job? -What do you know about us/our competitors? How to answer: This is rather a popular question nowadays since the interviewer would like to test how much you know about the company and whether your interests match their needs. Make sure you research well about the company. Answer the questions using the strong points of the company eg. the company’s policies, working environment etc. Possible answer: “I know that you produce high quality porcelain and bone china tableware, and that you export about 60% of your products. I know that the company uses a lot of Japanese technology and that you maintain very high standards.” 4. Questions checking your on-the-job skills -What are some of the problems you faced and how did you handle them? -How would you tackle this problem?(situation will be given by interviewer) How to answer: First paraphrase the problem, then explain the steps to solve it. Most importantly, give the result of your steps. Remember not to criticize people. Eg. “Well, if the employees did not follow the company guidelines, which affected production, first I would hold a meeting to listen to their opinions, then I would make it clear to them why the company’s guidelines are necessary.” 5. Other possible questions 5.1 about your personality: -What are your strengths/strong points? (Be realistic & modest. Don’t be overconfident.) -What are your weaknesses/weak points? (Don’t mention any weak points that are required for the job!) -How would you rate yourself on a scale from one to ten? (Rate yourself logically. Don’t underestimate yourself. Give reasons to support your answer.) -What type of boss do you like? -What type of people make you angry? (Tell the truth, but do not criticize people.) -Would you be willing to start at the bottom? (Generally, ‘yes’, but it varies from case to case.) 5.2 about your future plans: -What are your future plans? -Where do you see yourself in five years? -What single factor do you think determines a person’s progress in their professional career? 5.3 others: -What is your salary expectation? What salary do you have in mind? (Avoid giving a direct figure. You may say, “the salary is negotiable and I’m quite flexible,” or “I’m looking for a salary that matches my skills and experience.” However, if forced to give a figure, answer reasonably. You should research the salary scheme of that company beforehand). -What difficulties do you think you might have when working for our company? (It is not a wise idea to say that you will have no difficulties at all. A possible answer might be, “Well, I think when a person starts a new job there are always some difficulties. I can’t predict exactly what they will be, but of course I’ll do my best to deal with them.” Better still, talk about getting to know your new colleagues & the organization and ‘culture’ of the company.

UNIT6 PART 2 Body After the introduction, it is time to start presenting the body of your talk. There are two components of the body of an oral presentation: the opening sentences and the content.
The opening sentences You can get the audience’s interest by using the following simple techniques to present the opening sentences of the body of your presentation:
Giving an amazing fact: Surprise the audience with a fact about the topic. The data be in statistics numbers or just general information. However, it is necessary to make sure that all the information is correct and comes from valid sources. Asking for some solutions: Describe a problem about the topic and ask the audience to think of some solutions. This will get them involved in the presentation and make it more interesting. Using an anecdote: Draw the attention of the audience by telling them a short story related to the topic.
2.1 Match the following sentences with the techniques above. 1. Giving an amazing fact 2. Asking for some solutions 3. Using an anecdote __________ 1. The world population increased from 3 billion in 1959 to 6 billion by 1999, a doubling that occurred over 40 years. The Census Bureau's latest projections imply that population growth will continue into the 21st century, although more slowly. The world population is projected to grow from 6 billion in 1999 to 9 billion by 2040, an increase of 50 percent is expected to require 41 years. Today I will show you the effects of over population. __________ 2. Do you have a problem with stress during staying in a completely different culture? If your answer is “Yes, how do you cope with it. There are many ways to deal with culture shocks and my presentation will let you know more about it. __________ 3. Do you know how bad the air pollution in Chiang Mai is? There are 5,000 people suffering from respiratory problems every year. Do you think there is anything we can do to solve this problem?
122
__________ 4. Have you ever heard the saying “You are what you eat”? I have two friends whose eating habits are totally different. One loves eating junk food, while the other is a vegetarian. I think there is no need to tell you who is healthier. The story I have just told you is the example of how food affects us. __________ 5. One of my friends living in Bangkok told me the other day that she spent around 3 hours every working day on the road. If you were my friend, what would you do? … Thank you for your answer. Now I will tell you more about the solution of traffic problem.
The content What information should you give in your presentation? All your information should support your purpose. In most cases you will have to limit the content, as time is usually precious! Just as when you are driving along a road that you don't know very well, you depend on signs to guide you, you need to guide the listener by using expressions to tell him/her where you are going. Listing information Lists are often a necessary evil. Vary your language whenever possible and avoid reading directly. There are three things we have to consider: one, two, and three. Now let us look at the first aspect which is... First of all,… In the first place… Linking ideas, sections/making transitions Indicate the end of one section and the beginning of the next. That's all I would like to say about... (subject of part A) and now let us turn to.... Now that we've seen... let us turn to…

To refer to what you have said previously: As I have already said earlier... As we saw in part one... To repeat what I've said already…
To summarize: To summarize To sum up, Let me summarize by saying So that concludes my overview In conclusion Briefly said In short, What I've tried to show in this part... To recap what we've seen so far...
To refer to what an expert says: I quote the words of... In the words of… According to... Here I'd like to quote… As Mr. X says in his book... There is a famous quotation that goes…

125
UNIT6 PART 3 Conclusion 3.1 Read the conclusion part below and brainstorm four important components of a conclusion.
Finally, let me come back to the key point of my talk. I told you that in the first quarter, more than half, or 52%, of our revenues comes from overseas. This is in line with the targets we set out in 2004 when we decided we wanted to continue to rely on overseas markets, especially China. To keep growing, in the past three months, we’ve added more new customers in China than in any other country. Now what are our targets for the next few months? The first major step will be the introduction of our PayPal payment service in China. And then we will focus on finding customers in existing markets, such as the US and Germany, who haven’t tried buying from our website yet... O.K. that’s everything I wanted to say. We just have time for a few questions.

3.2 Write a conclusion based on a given article. Air pollution in Chiang Mai has become a big problem. It is rising to a dangerous level. The maximum level of suspended particles of pollution is 120 micron/cubic meter, but after March 13, 2005, the dust level has increased up to 151.2 microns/cubic meter in Chiang Mai, which means that the pollution is 20.6% above the healthy level. When there is too much pollution in the air, it is very dangerous for the people’s health, because it can irritate their air passages and their lungs. The pollution often remains in the lungs and can worsen such respiratory problems, such as asthma and bronchitis. People produce most of the wastes that cause air pollution by driving everywhere and using Tuk Tuks, which create a lot of air pollution. A lot of people in Chiang Mai burn their garbage. For those who don’t know, burning garbage creates a lot of air pollution. All that black smoke that comes out is very bad for the air pollution and your health. Pollution is VERY DANGEROUS. In 2001, the pollution in Bangkok caused 3,300 premature deaths, and led to almost 17,000 hospital admissions, at a total health care of up to 6.3 billion dollars. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________
