PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
Welcome to the 2023 Connecticut Convention in the insurance capital of the world. Do we have a great event in store for you. Thank you to everyone—the sponsors, exhibitors, advertisers—and you for contributing to the convention’s success. We have all the hallmarks that you’ve come to expect from a PIACT event— education that leads to knowledge, and networking that leads to connections. Enjoy your face-to-face time.
LEARNING
New this year: We are offering you the chance to witness a cyberattack without having to experience it yourself. Representatives from TAG Solutions will run through what happens when an agency experiences a cyberattack, starting at the day of the attack. Don’t forget to pick up your comprehensive, step-by-step cyber security playbook and agency self-assessment to take back to your agency.
For those who need continuing-education credits, join John Fear, CPIA, CISR, for two informative sessions. In Thursday’s class, Fear will offer an introduction to the insurance-issues related to national changes in marijuana possession and usage laws. Additionally, he will cover errors-and-omissions knowledge on how to help your clients avoid coverage gaps on Friday. Attend both classes and earn 4 CE credits.
Additionally, during the convention there will be several InsurTech demonstrations scheduled during the day. And, other businesses will demonstrate their products and services in our sold-out trade show.
NETWORKING
Thank you to the Connecticut Young Insurance Professionals for hosting Happy Hour Wednesday night. There are plenty of other opportunities to network, including at the networking luncheon Thursday afternoon and the networking reception later that night. Get ready to dance to the music spun by DJ Michael Nigretti.
I’ve just touched on a few of Connecticut Convention’s offerings. More details about the event can be found in this program book. I hope you enjoy your Connecticut Convention. Thank you for being here.

EDUCATION SESSIONS
Thursday, March 23
9:30–11 a.m.
Before the Attack: A Mock Cyber Event
Presented by TAG Solutions
Sponsored by: RT Specialty
Cybercrime is growing at an alarming rate. The average cost of a data breach now sits at $4.24 million, with 60% of all companies experiencing a breach in 2021. Most cybersecurity insurance policy costs have tripled in the past couple of years. The threat of ransomware attacks, data breaches, or major IT outages worry companies even more than business and supply-chain disruption, natural disasters, or the COVID-19 pandemic.
Want to learn how to protect your organization? This session will point out any gaps you have in your current program, as well as ensure what you’re doing today is protecting you.
A comprehensive, step-by-step cybersecurity playbook and agency self-assessment is yours to take back to your agency.
2:30–3:30 p.m.
Cannabis Insurance: The 360 on 420
John Fear, CPIA, CISR
Approved for 1 CTPC credit. (6000137058)
Sponsored by: NLC Insurance Cos.
Designed to be an introduction to the insurance-issues related to national changes in marijuana possession and usage laws, this course has a particular emphasis on examining the commercial risks, but also addresses the personal-lines homeowners insurance issues. We also will examine the various risks in the cannabis supply chain and what their unique needs to be addressed are, and how Connecticut’s Social Equity Council affects the establishment of those businesses. Finally, we will look at how the forms and supplemental applications will impact the risk assessment of this growing industry segment.
Friday, March 24
9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Errors & Omissions-Avoiding Coverage Gaps
John Fear, CPIA, CISR
Approved for 3 CTPC credits. (6000137232)
Sponsored by: Quincy Mutual Group
The insurance industry’s greatest obstacle to overcome is the ignorance of consumers as to how their insurance coverage protects them in case a claim needs to be filed. The recognition of this issue—and the opportunity it presents for agents to update client information and add value to individual accounts through a thoughtful and methodical review process—is critical to overcoming that knowledge gap. We will examine the most common exposures and how a systematic process can help agents respond to possible gaps in coverage changes and minimize your agency’s errors-andomissions exposure(s). We will discuss some of the most effective methods in both uncovering these issues, as well as how to position solutions to meet the clients’ needs.
^UN^FF–This course has been approved for E&O loss-prevention credit by Utica National & Fireman’s Fund. Call the PIA E&O Department for details.
