resident Benigno S. Aquino III called on the whole nation’s collective actions in pursuing the ideals of his late father, Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., as he led in the commemoration of the latter’s martyrdom that restored the peace and democracy to the nation 28 years ago. The exhibit features some of the most memorable photographs as well as illustrations of Ninoy highlighting the diverse aspects of his meaningful life. It will also illustrate a vibrant portrait of Filipino heroism; the sacrifices heroism entails and explains its importance to date in the nation’s history. Aquino extends condolences to families of Tiempo and Polotan-Tuvera
T
he Aquino administration mourns the deaths of National Artist Edith Tiempo and renowned fictionist and essayist Kerima Polotan Tuvera.
“It is a sad weekend for the Philippine literary community as two of its most eminent elders, National Artist for Literature Edith L. Tiempo and renowned fictionist and essayist Kerima Polotan Tuvera, passed away within a day of each other,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement. Tiempo died on Sunday while Tuvera passed away last Friday. Lacierda said the Aquino administration is “united in grief with a country that mourns their passing.” “Many of the country’s established literary practitioners, as well as its most promising young talents, trace their lineage from the Silliman National Writers Workshop which Mrs. Tiempo established with her late husband. Among those who served as a pillar of the workshop was Mrs. Polotan Tuvera, whose own body of work has been widely recognized as crucial to the development of Philippine Literary Fiction written from English,” Lacierda said. “Both stalwarts have influenced generations of writers through their mentoring and through their own works, inspiring countless to tread the same path. We are certain that coming generations of Filipinos
will likewise find a timeless vibrancy in the wealth that they contributed to our culture, our collective memory, and our nation’s story,” he added. Tiempo was born in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya on April 22, 1919. Together with her late husband, writer and critic Edilberto K. Tiempo, they founded (in 1962) and directed the Silliman National Writers Workshop in Dumaguete City, which has produced some of the country’s best writers. She was conferred the National Artist Award for Literature in 1999. She died at the age of 92 on August 21 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. Among her novels were A Blade of Fern (1978), His Native Coast (1979), The Alien Corn (1992), One, Tilting Leaves (1995) and The Builder (2003). She wrote a short fiction, Abide, Joshua, and Other Stories (1964) and poetries, The Tracks of Babylon and Other Poems (1966), The Charmer’s Box (1992), Beyond, Extensions (1993) and Marginal Annotations (2001). Tuvera, former editor in chief of Focus Philippines magazine and the Evening Post newspaper, died at the age of 85. She won four first prizes at the Palanca awards, and also garnered prizes in the 5

She was a regular panelist at the Silliman University Writers Workshop in the 1960s, and sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Patricia S. Torres. Among her books, as listed in the Umpil Directory of Filipino Writers, were the novel Hand of the Enemy (1962), Stories, a Collec-
tion (1966), Author’s Choice (1972, essays), and Adventures in a Forgotten Country (1975, essays). One of her last books was The True and the Plain (UP Press), a memoir of childhood. The City of Manila also conferred on her the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan award.
Malacañang cites quick response of Cost Guard and concerned groups in rescue of Fastcraft

alacañang cited on Monday the Philippine Coast Guard and concerned groups for their “immediate response” in rescuing the crew and passengers of the M/V Island Ferry Fastcraft I which sank near the port of Cebu on Sunday (August 21) due to faulty electrical wiring in its engine room. In a statement, Malacañang said that the quick actions of the PCG and commercial vessel M/ V Seajet which was passing by “rescued majority of the manifested 75 people on board.” “We recognize that more lives could have been lost were it not for the search and rescue team’s valiant efforts, the invaluable assistance extended by the passing passenger vessel, and the heroism of our fisherfolk who were among those first at the scene,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail
Valte said. Valte also cited Transportation and Communication Secretary Mar Roxas for immediately forming a crisis team that oversaw the rescue operations of the crew and passengers of the illfated ship. As of this writing, Roxas had ordered the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to ground, effective immediately, all vessels being operated by Island Express Shipping, owner and operator of the sunken ship. The DOTC chief said the directive was meant to
ensure that all vessels operated by Island Express Shipping are seaworthy. Roxas also instructed the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to convene the Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) and to subject the owners and operators of Island Express Shipping to a thorough investigation to determine whether the shipping company or its crew was at fault. Island Express Shipping has six vessels: one fastcraft and five RoRo vessels serving Hagnaya-Sta. Fe and Cebu-Tubigon routes.

The survivors and relatives of the slain hostage victims arrived on Sunday from Hong Kong to seek justice and support from the Philippine government.

alacañang assured the families of Filipinos in Libya that the government has been exerting all the necessary efforts to ensure the safety of their relatives there and eventually bring them home.
In a press briefing at the Palace on Monday, Presidential Deputy Spokesperson Abigail Valte said that President Benigno S. Aquino III has directed all concerned government agencies to assess the situation of Filipinos in Libya and to ensure that not a single Filipino will be harmed in the heightened violence there. “On the situation in Libya, the President has given additional instructions to validate the situation and to see what else can be done to help the Filipinos who want to be repatriated,” Valte said. For the time being, Valte said, there are 86 Filipinos who have already manifested their desire to be repatriated. Heeding to the directives of President Aquino through DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario, Valte added that Foreign Affairs Undesecretary Rafael Seguis is currently in Libya to assess the needs of the Filipinos in the area.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has advised the officials of the Philippine Embassy in Libya to remain indoors due to the extreme danger caused by violence in the streets. “We have been advised by the IOM that our people in the embassy must remain in the embassy due to violence in the streets. We have been advised that it is highly and extremely unsafe for our people in the embassy to go out now and check the situation of our fellow Filipinos,” Valte said. Valte assured that the government is constantly monitoring the situation in Libya to ensure the safety of the Filipinos there. “The President has asked for the continuous update on the situation in Libya, so he asked the concerned officials to constantly keep him abreast of the developments there,” Valte said. quired the refurbished US Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton (WHEC-715) and commissioned it as BRP Gregorio del Pilar Pacific Fleet 15. The 378-foot vessel with a crew capacity of 180 is equipped with armament and weapons system, propulsion plant, electrical generation, helicopter hangar and flight deck, among others. It will be deployed to carry out the mission for drug interdiction, law enforcement, search and rescue operations, defense readiness and migrant interdiction. It will also perform tasks in protecting the country’s natural gas and oil exploration projects off Palawan amid reported incursions in the West Philippine Sea.

DAVAO CITY, Aug. 22 (PIA) – “An ultra-mega success.” So says Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte describing the recently concluded Kadayawan thanksgiving festival held last weekend (August 19-20).
“The crowd turn-out was bigger this year, the weather cooperated and there was zero terror incident,” the Mayor said of the factors for the success of the festival which is held in the month of August. According to figures from the Davao City Police Office, crowd turn-out was estimated at around 50,000 people for the indak-indak (street dancing) event and 70,000 for the Pamulak sa Kadayawan (floral float parade). The past 2010 Kadayawan estimated 30,000 heads for Indak-indak and 50,000 for the floral float parade. The Mayor said she gave a grade of 8 to the event which was organized by a private sector organization, the Duaw Foundation.
Mayor Duterte said that one can see the difference between past events organized by the City Government and the current Kadayawan particularly in setting the mood and the over-all participation of the people. She however said that there could be room for improvements particularly in crowd control near the performance areas, the provision of areas where floral floats could be displayed and be seen by the people and more bleachers which could be used by spectators for better vantage point. Duterte is thankful that the event went on smoothly, she recounts several issues which had hounded the festival thanks in part to voracious
critics whom she called as “negastars”. Among these controversies include the new Kadayawan logo which many derided as lifeless and dull, the green colored theme of the festival and the fees for photographer’s among others. She said that all this are lessons which could be studied for future Kadayawan festivals. Kadayawan festival with its indigenous origins is a festival of thanksgiving to the supreme being Manama for abundant harvests, It is a much-anticipated annual event in Davao City whose grandiose festivities have earned its moniker as the Festival of Festival or the King of Festivals. A non-alcoholic drink which combines pomelo, calamansi and guava; its recipe and name are trademarked for use by the City of Davao. It is also a clever reference to the July 1 incident where the lady City Mayor punched a Court Sheriff after disobeying her orders to delay the demolition of several shanties. Mayor Duterte’s punches caught on video became an instant viral hit in the internet. “We have given the recipes to restaurants and
bars but that recipe is reserved they cannot develop that into another drink.” Duterte said. If they will add alcohol in the punch then they have to rename it. They could not use the name. The drink is targeted to be a trademark drink of the City similar to the Singapore Sling of Singapore. She said the City is exploring the tie-up with the Department of Science and Technology particularly in bottling the drink which then can be marketed. “They said it is difficult to bottle the punch, that is why we are partnering with
the DOST for the packaging.” According to the Mayor, once bottling is perfected and developed the manufacturing of the bottled punch will be given to the city’s women sector as a livelihood program. The farm demonstration area was divided into two farms: one farm was devoted to farmer’s practice in Marilog; while, the other farm was dedicated to the production system from Benguet. The farmer-members of Baganihan Agri-Eco Ventures Cooperative were grateful of the knowledge and skill they have gained during the said training. He asked them to work for the elusive peace in the countryside, side by side with development as he received two checks worth P14,216,000 from the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP). The amount will be used to finance various projects ranging from infra repairs to livelihood in their respective municipalities. Rebels torched down army’s unfinished detachment by Dandy Lapura
SURIGAO DEL NORTE, August 22 (PIA) - Another vicious act was recently committed by the Communist Terrorist CPP-NPA-NDF (CNN) last August 20, 2011 when they torched down the unfinished detachment of the 30th Infantry Battalion located in Brgy. Bunyasan, Malimono this province. A report from 30IB’s Civil Military Officer Capt. Tony Bugawan revealed that it was around 7:40 pm, Saturday when the incident happened. Bugawan said CNN rebels then fired shots to the nearby houses which caused the people to panic and psychological trauma to the children and elderly. In response, 30IB’s Bravo Company assigned in the area opened fire at the rebels. The firefight lasted
about 15minutes. Bugawan said no casualty was reported in the government side while undetermined number on the enemy side. Meantime, residents of Malimono praised the heroic act of the Philippine Army force. TThey also vowed to support to the government forces in suppressing the rebel group in the area. Earlier, panic also reigned in the residents of the neighboring municipality of San Francisco as they
received NPA threats spread over text messages such as bombing explosion, assault and kidnapping of San Francicso Mayor Simplicia Bacol. With these, classes were suspended on that day. Suyao AGUSAN DEL SUR, Aug. 22 (PIA) - Fourteen runners from Agusan del Sur went home bringing along awards after proving their capability in running and marathon during the recently conducted “Run for Humanity” dubbed as Red Cross run 2011 in Tagum City. Participated by some 4,000 runners from various groups and sectors from Davao del Norte and the neighboring provinces, all the 14 Agusan del Sur runners were decorated with awards after winning in various categories over their opponents. Ruby Joy Lopez grabbed the fifth place in the 12 years old and under category in their four-kilometer finisher run while Angelo Loyola, Nilo Nicolas and Anna Loren Lumimbay bagged the 7th, 5th and another 7th place in the Eight-kilometer finisher run respectively for boys and girls. ARMM’s DOLE, REZA execs laud Adiong’s legacy of instituted reforms ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Aug 21 (PIA) – Two top women executives in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have declared that initial reforms needed were already instituted in their respective offices during their brief stint under the administration of outgoing ARMM Acting Governor Ansaruddin Adiong. The Bureau of Public Information reveals, in a press release, that at least two key ARMM Cabinet members took pride of the 18-month Adiong regime and their respective leaderships, in general, and that they will bow out of office with good legacy. ARMM’s Labor and Employment Secretary Myra Alih and Regional Economic Zone Authority (REZA) Executive Director Rosslaini Sinarimbo both affirmed that the “greatest asset” of their regime is its “convergence” of efforts in administrative and operational functions under the principle of “consultation, transparency and moral governance.” “We are now ready to vacate our office honorably,” Alih said, adding that concrete reforms had been taking place long before proponents for appointment of officers-in-charge (OICs) began to espouse such. Malacañang-appointed OICs are set to assume the ARMM reins after Sept. 30. “We are hopeful that

MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon, August 22 (PIA) – Admitting there is an uncertain research result on the vaccine against dengue, the Department of Health (DOH) and the Provincial Health Office (PHO) here, has called for continuous active participation of the residents on anti-dengue drive largely based on prevention over treatment.
Dr. Teresita Damasco, Provincial Health Officer, said dengue is everyone’s concern and should do their share in cleanliness, since this is still the best weapon to fight the dreadful disease. In the latest report to Governor Alex Calingasan, PHO surveillance data shows there were only 275 cases from January until now, compared to 1,505 cases in the same months of 2010, hence a drop rate of more than 80 percent. Despite this, Damasco urged the people of Bukidnon to be more alert as dengue peaks during August to September, the perfect time it hits vulnerable areas. “Dengue is a manmade problem because mosquitoes that carry dengue need our containers, refrigerators, old tires, empty bottles and cans, drains, and solid wastes as ideal breeding sites,”

His other degrees include a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, in 1995 and an MA in Theology, Bachelor in Sacred Theology, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the Loyola School of Theology, ADMU, in 1992. Meanwhile, Fr. Yap said the competencies that XU supplies must match the demand of the private sector, civil society, government and civil service in Northern Mindanao, the Philippines
and the ASEAN region. These extra two (2) years will not only mean that our XU High School will have to offer two more years of pre-university college-bound training. It will, likewise, imply that XU will have to offer programs for the careerbound track. “We will strengthen and align the technical and vocational courses offered by our Center for Integrated Technologies (CIT). All our colleges, i.e., engineering, agriculture, nursing, computer studies, education, arts and sciences, business and management, may have to offer 2-year ladderized programs on the careerbound track for their respective fields,” he said. Further, he said, K+12 will also mean revisions of the tertiary General Education Curriculum that will be offered after Senior High School. And the courses that will be offered at the junior and senior years of the tertiary level will also have to be upgraded so these be-
come more research-oriented. When the laws are enacted and the rules and regulations are promulgated, XU will rise to the challenge of K+12 and will avail creatively of the opportunities it offers for making education better. He also said XU needs to develop a more professional organization saying “Our student population has grown from 14,000 in 2002 to 16,000, today. Our undergraduate tertiary level population is the biggest among the Ateneos with the most number of schools and colleges.” “And no matter at what level, whether careeror college- bound or ladderized or upgraded university programs, Ateneo de Cagayan will make sure that all are marked by the characteristics of Jesuit education, ‘en todo amar y servir,’ in all things to love and serve the Lord,” Fr. “The forum aims to institutionalize the organic sector industry and expect to come up with a vermi organic organization, by province and by municipality,” Professor Edgardo D. Layug, Chairperson of RAFC, said. It will also serve as a platform in discussing the implementing rules and regulation of Republic Act 10068, as well, as provide updates on the salient provision of the law, focusing, primarily, on accreditation, registration of organic food and input products, establishment of demo farms and the organic agricultural roadmap for year 2011-2016. Layug said all efforts
during the 2-day activity are geared towards the efficient implementation of RA 10068 and on the formulation of a regional organic roadmap, as it further intends to come up with a Mindanao vermi baseline information. Meanwhile, the forum will run from August 25-26 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant, this city, matched side by side with a whole day training/practicum on the basic principles and techniques in vermiculture on August 24. This will take place at the Manresa Farm in Upper Carmen where a step by step demonstration from identification and collection of materials,
pre-composting, feeding, maintenance, harvesting and quality analysis will be done. Layug explained that vermiculture is simply a way of composting, using earthworms to speed up the process and thereby utilizing the worm droppings or worm manure called vermicastings as its end-product that could be used or sold as organic fertilizers for plants or crops. Vermi is a first class compost product and preferred by most farmers as they can manufacture their own compost fertilizers right on their own backyard through the aid of vermi or earthworms, Layug said.
