At 4:00 a.m. today, Tropical Storm “Pedring” was estimated, based on satellite and surface data, at 260 kilometers East Northeast of Virac, Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour. As it gained more strength, “Pedring” was upgraded into a typhoon threatening the provinces of Isabela-Aurora area. On September 26, 2009, the country was devastated by typhoon “Ondoy” leaving over 300 casualties all over the country and massive destruction to properties and livelihood amounting to billions of pesos. Aquino III takes a hands-on approach, just like in the past, on the situation in the Philippines, which is presently battered by Typhoon Pedring.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma made this statement when asked about the reaction of President Aquino on Typhoon Pedring during a press briefing at the Tokyo Kaikan here. Coloma said that the President is closely monitoring the typhoon back home and he is doing this during breaks or in-between his meetings with key Japanese businessmen which are part of his official working visit to Japan. While attending

the Philippine Economic Forum at the Tokyo, Kaikan Hotel here, President Aquino apologized for not having answered the added questions supposed to be fielded to him during the Q and A portion saying that “there is a typhoon visiting the Philippines right now and we are monitoring the situation to ensure that our people are safe.” “We will apologize for the time constraint. There is a typhoon visiting the Philippines right now and we are monitoring the situation to

ensure that our people are safe. Thank you,” the President said. “We are getting timely, even more frequent updates from the Department of Science and Technology. As of yesterday, Coloma said, all of the government agencies have already been mobilized through the Office of Civil Defense and NDRRMC headed by Gen. Benito Ramos. They are hands on, they are on the job, even while the President is abroad, the entire government machinery is in place and very much in control of the situation. Coloma noted that during a stormy weather, like in the case of Typhoon Pedring, adequate warning is given in terms of time and also the proper evacuation facilities or temporary relocation facilities have been set

up. “So, you can be certain that these are well in place and the people are properly informed,” he added. “I think what we would like to emphasize is that we are giving our citizens adequate information, and we are also keeping them out of harm’s way through measures like suspension of classes, suspension of work and if they are already in harm’s way we would like to give them direct assistance, such as those who are stranded or those who may have to be evacuated or relocated, that they are in properly provided evacuation or relocation centers.” Confirming the President’s being at the forefront of the typhoon in the Philippines, Coloma said : “As we sit in the busi-

Barangay Sta Cruz received assistance for its vermiculture - vermicomposting livelihood project while Barangay Buto is being assisted for the repair and rehabilitation of its water sytem. Just recently, South Cotabato Gov. Arthur Y. Pingoy Jr. signed a memorandum of agreement with the barangay councils of the

two barangays for the immediate implementation of the project. Barangay Chairmen Reynaldo F. Estanislao of Sta. Cruz and Efren E. Batiao of Buto represented their respective barangay councils in the signing ceremony of the Project Proposal and the Trust Account Management Agreement (TAMA). SCCM Project

Bayugan City conducts VAW desk orientation

BUTUAN CITY, Sept. 27 (PIA) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Local Government Unit of Bayugan City, through the Office of the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) conducted an Orientation on Violence Against Women (VAW) Desk for the officials of the covered barangays held recently at the Lope A. Asis Memorial Gymnasium, Bayugan City. 12 Punong Barangays and 42 Barangay Kagawads who are Chaired the Women and Children Committee attended the activity. The orientation aims to ensure the establishment of a VAW Desk in every barangay of the City as provided in Republic Act 9710 or the Magna Carta of Women to ensure that violence against women cases are fully addressed in a gendersensitive manner. In his message, Hon. Kirk A. Asis, Sangguniang Panlungsod member and IACAT-VAWC Co-Chairman, emphasized that 20

the issue on violence against women should be responded by concerned LGUs since it affects the family especially the children. He also added that barangays should come up with programs and projects geared towards strengthening family relations and youth development. DILG Provincial Director Arleen Ann R. Sanchez provided inputs on the DILG, DSWD, DepEd, DOH, and PCWâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2010-2 dated December 9, 2010 which is the Guidelines in the Establishment of a VAW Desk

in every barangay while Mrs. Flordeliza C. Obani of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office discussed the salient features of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act. At the end of the activity, it was agreed that every barangay in Bayugan City will establish a VAW Desk and designate a VAW Desk Officer before October 2011 ends. BUTUAN CITY, Sept. 27 (PIA) – The Agusan del Norte Electric Cooperative, Inc. (ANECO) under the leadership of Board of Director President Dioscoro P. Boco and General Manager Arch. Horacio T. Santos fully supports the priority program of His Excellency President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III which aims to fully energize the 31,000 sitios and puroks in the entire country during his term of office. Dubbed as the “Barangay Line Enhancement and Sitio Energization Program,” this priority program will start this year and will run up to 2016 with a budget of P31 billion. During the workshop organized by the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the National Electrification Administration (NEA) at the PDA, Toledo City last September 21 to 24, 2011, the said priority program was hatched. Participated by 277 delegates from Re-

gions VI to XII, ARMM and the Caraga, the workshop aims to discuss new critical issues and concerns, strategies and initiatives to ensure smooth program implementation and to comply with the requirements of the Office of the President and the Commission on Audit (COA). The delegates composed of General Managers, Finance, Institutional and Technical Managers were very enthusiastic in supporting the said program. Initial project cost is pegged at P1.5 billion with a target of 1,410 sitios and

puroks with a target date of completion at the end of this year. An initial budget of P814 million will be released to start the program. Spearheaded by ANECO General Manager Santos, the entire ECs (Electric Cooperatives) of Caraga region is committed to energize some 102 puroks and sitios by the end or before the end of December 2011. AGUSAN DEL SUR, Sept. 27 (PIA) – Some 67 agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) received land titles or certificate of land ownership awards (CLOA) as proof of ownership of the land they till from the Department of Agrarian Reform, Agusan del Sur provincial office in Barangay Katipunan, Bayugan City that highlighted the celebration of the Araw ng Barangay Katipunan. The 67 land titles are portions of 460.6553 hectares located in Brgy. Katipunan, Bayugan City, subject for distribution to some 282 identified ARBs who are members of Katipunan Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Association (KARBA) organized last April 2011. According to SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation Vice President for sales and marketing Lourdes Macalindong, the facility aims to boost local tourism as it can attract large conventions and

exhibitions. The City has been unable to snatch the hosting of premiere conventions and other large events like the much-coveted Ad Congress because of the lack of a sufficient convention facility in the City. Jason Magnaye, chief of the Davao City and investment Promotions Center and the City Tourism Operations Office says that they will be promoting these convention facilities as the city sets to woo the Meetings Incentives Conventions and Exhibit (MICE) market. He bared that another development, the Davao International Exhibition and

Convention Center is also being constructed also in Lanang. The facility can accommodate 3,000 to 4,000 people. Magnaye said that the two convention centers will be open by the time the City hosts MICE convention in March 2013. The SMX is touted to become a one-stop convention complex with a nearby hotel being put up in the area. The 204room Park Inn Hotel under the Raddisson brand aims to complement the SMX and will be connected by a series of foot bridges. The P800million hotel the first of its brand in Southeast Asia is expected to open by 2013.
