Where is Siquijor on the literary map?
By Shane Jay G. Fabugais
Cebu has Cebu Writers’ Workshop, Negros Oriental has Silliman University National Writers Workshop, Bohol has Agi Creative Writing Workshop, while Siquijor has sparkling fireflies driving away the Spanish soldiers and missionaries plying the Visayan area. In the 28th Iligan National Writers’ Workshop, a 10-day workshop held in December 2021, a lone Siquijodnon became an official fellow for fiction in Cebuano. During the opening program, Erlinda Kintanar Alburo, professor of Literature and Anthropology at the University of San Carlos commented, “ngano kahang usa ra ang entry in Cebuano?” This is not a glorious statement that calls for a celebration. This is a disconcerting alarm on the imminence of the death of Cebuano literature. If the Cebuano people continue to disregard this warning, Cebuano literary pieces will succumb to as low, eventual demise. Siquijor endures the comfort of living their busy lives while keeping a blind eye on the dying. If the world is in danger, our culture and tradition are marching toward its grave. We a r e t o o f o c u s e d o n praising and flexing masterpieces of world literature yet foreign to our own language, historical events, and stories. Studying literature from across continents is vital to mirror significant events, but giving value to ours is a necessity. We become too dependent on textbooks and are lured into thinking of the high ideals they prescribe and often forget to contextualize these materials. Doing so not only buries our culture but also kills our sense of patriotism. With the concern of the rarity and the fret of the population in the writing field labeled as a small group, Christine Godinez-Ortega, director of the Iligan workshop challenged the Siquijodnon fellow: “Why don’t
you initiate a writing workshop in Siquijor?” The fellow replied, “Who am I?” “When I became director of the Iligan workshop, such question didn’t cross my mind. I was focused on continuing what had beens tarted”, said Christine. Siquijor has no known authors, poets, or fiction writers. If folk stories aren’t our thing, then we deprive our future generation of all these. It is disheartening that Siquijodnons to this day remain disinterested, inactive, and unconcerned with the development to four local libraries and disregard the enhancement of our national library. The island is known for its mysticism, which is a prominent aspect of Siquijodnon identity. For some time, it has also been named the “Land of Sorcery,” because of the verbal folklore, beliefs, ritual practices, personal experiences, and social realities experienced by the locals. The practice of voodoo, “paktol”, “barang”, “haplit”,” “angyaw sa santissimo”; the engagement of folk healing which includes “bulobulo”, “tapdas”, “tawal”, and “sigingsiging”; and the vibrance of our festival depiction sa wait to be heard. “Kayaman ng Siquijor sa mga kwento uy. We thirst for Siquijodnon stories and poems,” said Gerald Galindez, a teacher, poet, and song writer from Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat. If Christine continued what had been started, and if Gerald thirsts for our stories, how do we get comfortable just sitting around our unwritten stories? Merle Alunan, professor emeritus of the University of the Philippines, once said, “Siquijor is rich in culture. You are sitting on amine of gold.” If we have such power to dominate in the field of literature, then what hinders us to write and tell a story? Shane Jay Fabugais, a Siquijodnon and a fellow of the 28th Iligan National Writers’Workshop, bravely stood by the criticisms of the panelists to deliver a folk literary story and took a courageous step to bring Siquijor on the literary map. We may lag in technology and infrastructure, yet we lead with the abundance of our culture and tradition. Bring Siquijor to the literary map. The edge of tomorrow is in your hands.

DA7 distributes fertilizer subsidy to rice farmers in Siquijor By Mary Jane Banglos
Siquijor eyes increase in rice production thru CHRF
By Mary Jane Banglos
The Department of Agriculture Region 7 held a briefing on Community Hybrid Rice Farming (CHRF) in the Province of Siquijor to highlight the increase in rice production upon establishment of the project. Cecile Opada, CHRF focal person, said since there is only one cluster for Siquijor, the goal of the project is highly achievable given the yield record of rice for Siquijor at 3.55mt/ ha.
Last year, of the 554.34 hectares dedicated to rice farming, 209.75 hectares were planted with hybrid rice, 190.50 hectares during the dry season and 19.24 in the wet season. With the CHRF, inputs such as rice seeds, subsidy to fertilizers, and machineries will be provided to the cluster association with the Municipality of Maria as hybrid cluster. Farmers will also be equipped with the skills and knowledge to engage not just in rice production, but also in processing and trading. (PR)
One hundred thirty-two rice farmers from the Municipality of Maria, Siquijor received fertilizer subsidy from the Department of Agriculture 7. Distributed by the Provincial Agricultural Technology Coordinating Office Siquijor, the fertilizer subsidy amounting to P139,530 is expected to reduce the fertilizer expenses of the rice farmer beneficiaries. Based on DA Memorandum Circular 21, series of 2021 signed by then DA Secretary William Dar, the distribution was in the form of e-vouchers bearing the name of the rice farmer and other demographics, location of the farm, and total area dedicated for hybrid rice production. Governor Jake Vincent Villa and Provincial Agriculturist Emigdio Coritico both said the rising prices of fertilizers distressed the farmers, and they thanked DA for assisting the rice farmers in alleviating their burden on fertilizer cost. “Ang pagpabilin nga ubos ang presyo sa mga panginahanglanon sa pagpanguma - pinaagi man sa subsidyo o uban pang paagi sa tabang - importante kaayo kini sa atong mga mag-uuma ug mga konsumidor kay kini nagsiguro sa food security (It is important for the farmers and consumers that prices of farm inputs remain affordable, may it be through subsidy or any assistance, because it assures food security),” said Villa. The fertilizer amount received by the rice farmers was based on their declared area of rice production for hybrid seeds from the previous year under the Rice Resiliency Project II. (PR)
