Have Your Say

Whether you’ve had a great flight or feel that we could improve our service, we’d like to know. Drop us a line at khuluma@picasso.co.za. Hello, This is an opportunity for me to acknowledge the amazing cabin crew on flight MN471, departing Lanseria Saturday 22 March 2014. I have a limitation, or ‘special need’ (lol), but I did not see the need to ask for assistance as I was travelling with a friend. One of the cabin crew members who assisted me while boarding the plane, I think his name is Jean or Jacques, needs to receive a ‘sweet’ award as he came to sit right next to me and explained all the safety rules in detail, and showed me exactly where the emergency doors, buttons and toilets were located, and also the place where the magazine and safety rule book was kept. He also arranged for assistance when we landed at Cape Town and I appreciated it so much. This being my return flight, I had to compare the service rendered as I had travelled internationally, and I rated the service as excellent! I also wish to thank the ground staff who assisted me in Cape Town. This was my very first flight with kulula and it sure was a pleasant one. Regards, Andrea Thomas

MY DAUGHTER HAS been learning about units of measure at school. Thank goodness for the Arabs and the decimal system, because if she still had to measure things in fractions of an inch, I would have given up on her homework long ago. The only practical benefit of measuring in inches is that an inch is about the length of the last joint of your thumb, so you always have a measuring device handy. Unless you have been caught shoplifting in Saudi Arabia – which is how we came to the decimal system. I can understand why a native Indian in Borneo who has never seen a measuring tape might describe his height as two lemurs, a pawpaw and a cicada beetle. But then you have the Americans, most of whom by now understand the concept of a measuring tape, who will describe their height as five feet, three and three-eighths of an inch, which is about one-and-three-quarter yards, or a third of a rod. And thanks to their burgers, they still measure weight in pounds. Obviously a ‘100-gram burger’ can never compete with a ‘super-sized quarter pounder with an ounce of cheese and one-eighth pint of tasty sauce of indeterminate origin’. Remarkably, the British have all but abandoned using the ‘imperial’ measures, except that they still weigh themselves in stones. Now I know that the average British house does not have any room large enough to fit a balancing scale where you can sit in one basket while filling the other basket with stones, which means that some 21st-century factory must still be manufacturing a bathroom scale that is calibrated in stones. Which is a bit like your bank providing an app that allows you to calculate the interest on your home loan in clams and beads. Because we like to keep you healthy, and so that you know what you are eating, all of our kulula snacks are weighed in modern measures. And I regret we do not accept payment in clams.

Diabetes, the Silent Killer Are you sure you don’t have diabetes? The diabetes epidemic It is believed that 7% of the population is diabetic. A quarter of this percentage is unaware that they have the disease. This, however, does not include people with pre-diabetes, a condition in which blood-glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes. The diabetes epidemic is spurred by the national trend toward unhealthy weight gain. The symptoms of diabetes may begin gradually and can be hard to identify at first. The warning signs may include fatigue, a sick feeling, excessive thirst, and frequent urination, especially at night, as a result of a surplus of glucose in the blood. Other symptoms may include sudden weight loss, blurred vision, urinary tract infections, genital itching, and slow healing of skin and gums. When to See a Doctor In addition to these typical symptoms, a doctor may also suspect a patient to be diabetic if the person has certain health problems. For instance, heart disease, changes in vision, numbness in the feet and legs, or sores that are slow to heal, may prompt a doctor to check for the disease. Although these symptoms do not necessarily mean that a person has diabetes, anyone who is affected by these problems should see a doctor to have their blood sugar levels tested. Keeping blood sugar levels under control is possibly the most important factor in the prevention or control of diabetes. How to Control Blood Sugar Levels and Prevent Diabetes A diabetes prevention study found that diet and exercise actually worked better than some medications in delaying the development of diabetes. Just 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day, coupled with a 5-10% reduction in body weight, produced a 58% reduction in diabetes. A Supplement to Help Prevent Diabetes Constant high blood sugar levels are the main cause of type 2 diabetes, Insulin Resistance and being Overweight. A Low G.I. diet can help to regulate blood sugar levels, control appetite, stop cravings, prevent type 2 diabetes and diabetes complications. Manna Blood Sugar Support is a Natural & Organic Dietary Supplement which helps to reduce the G.I. of the food you eat by up to 43%, thus helping to control blood sugar levels, which can help to control and even prevent type 2 diabetes.

Manna Blood Suger Support is available in pharmacies, Dis-Chem and Clicks, countrywide. Also visit www.mannaplus.co.za or call 086 111 4197.

ÜBER-EDITOR OF THE MONTH

Über-ed’s letter Oliver Booth

Do I have to grow up?

picture: morné van zyl

Hello passengers, my name is oliver Booth and I am a man-child. a manchild is basically a person who … oh, just go and google it once you land (classic man-child reaction). I live with my Boston Terrier, Johnny Cash, and my girlfriend – after I was asked to leave home by my mother. she told me to pack my bags and go, and I asked if she could pack them for me. she obliged. my mother is a chef, which meant she constantly had a wooden spoon in her hand just waiting to smack the silver spoon out of my mouth, and my father is a lawyer, which meant every time I told him a story it needed to be backed up with forests of paperwork and at least one witness before he would believe me. Frustratingly, he never let me put my imaginary friend Timmy on the stand. most men learn certain life skills from their dad, but I didn’t listen to anyone but Timmy, so I don’t even know how to pick up furniture properly; I try pick the couch up too quickly and I end up putting my back out. I’m sure while you sit here reading this, there is a(nother) baby somewhere on the plane crying. people judge me for being a man-child, but they don’t judge babies. They say how cute and cuddly they are, but to me, babies look like blobs wrapped in pink blankets Why do people just allow them to scream and shout on aeroplanes? If you started shouting and crying uncontrollably on this flight, you’d be locked in the toilet and placed under arrest upon arrival at your destination. When I fly, my well-behaved dog has to sit in the back of the plane while a baby vomits on the seat next to me. surely babies can also be placed in the hold? as a man-child, I feel I’m well equipped for this month’s theme: young @Heart. I interviewed the very trendy and super talented Toya Delazy. she is actually very de-hardworking and de-awesome, but calls herself Delazy because she lives in Cape Town and everyone there is an ironic hipster. I also spoke to stormers and springbok player siya ‘Khaleesi’ Kolisi. He’s one of my rugby heroes and could take down the Khaleesi’s entire army with one handoff – he’s that good. Have a good flight and remember: if you’re sitting in the middle seat, those two armrests either side of you are rightfully yours! Claim them, and then pretend to be sleeping for the rest of the flight. ■

Who will be our next ed?

South Africa’s a funny place. It’s got lots of funny people. And some are damn hilarious. Every month, khuluma chooses a particularly amusing individual to be our über-editor. This funny man or woman then interrogates prominent South Africans for us. So book your flight for next month or head over to www.khulumaonline.co.za to see who it’ll be.

Flying 101 Just like a lack of good road manners, inconsiderate drivers can cause untold frustration on our roads, so too do inconsiderate flyers (thankfully, road rage is an impossibility at 30 000 feet). so in case you weren’t aware that talking loudly to uncle Melvyn on your phone while boarding can ruffle a few feathers, here are a few friendly tips on how to mind your manners when up in the air. When walking down the aisle to your seat, hold your bag in front of you or wheel it along on the floor behind you to avoid bumping into your fellow passengers. if you happen to see your long-lost auntie along the way, instead of stopping for a chat and holding up the queue, rather call her after the flight to catch up on Melvyn’s latest hair-brained scheme. Once you have found your spot, quickly open the storage compartment above your own seat and load your bags. try not to crush fellow passengers with an avalanche of bags. Our planes are not avalanche-proof. Neither are your fellow passengers’ skulls. keep everything you may need for the flight handy and try pop to the loo before you board the plane so you don’t have to jump up and down during the flight. if you do need to get up and pass a fellow passenger, avoid awkward contact by politely asking them to get up instead of giving them an impromptu lap dance (unless you really fancy them).

12

JUNE 2014

Kulula Pages 9.indd 12

also consider your fellow passengers’ personal space. Not everyone is an avid reader, so when reading a newspaper, fold it in half so it doesn’t spill over to the person next to you, unless you’re willing to share the crossword. Don’t be an armrest hog either, and by all means make friends on the flight, but if the person next to you is trying to work, perhaps save the investment pitch for Melvyn’s scheme for another time.

When it’s time to disembark, wait your turn and let those in front of you exit first. You’ve already won the race by flying with kulula.com. if you have a lot of luggage to get down from the storage compartment, let those behind you off first instead of holding up the queue, and bear in mind that that avalanche warning still applies. say hi to Melvyn from us. Book your flight, car and hotel on kulula.com. Now that’s full-on-travel.

kiss and tell IN THE 10 years that my buddy Vusi’s been married, he hasn’t forgotten a single wedding anniversary. How impressive is that, hey? Sure, he’s the master of remembering anniversaries. But boy, does he suck at the gifting part. His wife got an exam pad after he read somewhere that paper is the symbol for the first anniversary, and she was equally unimpressed by his gifts of a fruit basket (fruit, fifth anniversary) and an orange jersey (wool, seventh anniversary). On his recent 10th anniversary, Vusi was about to give his wife a USB mug warmer, when I stepped in and suggested he take her on a romantic getaway to the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa in Cape Town. Well, he took my advice and finally aced an anniversary. His wife was absolutely blown away by the experience and Vusi couldn’t thank kulula enough for putting together the knockout holiday package that made the experience possible. If you want to go all out for someone special, this one’s for you. From only R6 469 per person sharing, you score two nights’ accommodation in the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, as well as return economy-class flights from Jo’burg or Lanseria to Cape Town, two days’ car rental and more.

You’ll be set for romance from the first night at the Twelve Apostles, with a complimentary three-course dinner at the renowned Azure restaurant, plus sparkling wine served to your room on arrival, and a candle-and-rose-petal turndown. Brekkie is on the house every morning, with a choice of either oysters and sparkling wine at the Azure restaurant or breakfast in bed. The experience gets ultra-luxurious after a visit to the Twelve Apostles Spa for a complimentary 60-minute mediumpressure, relaxing Swedish massage, plus free use of the spa’s hot jet, cold plunge pools and flotation pool. Your evening entertainment will also be sorted with the hotel’s private 16-seater cinema, where you can sit back in one of the plush chairs while you enjoy a classic movie and an assortment of snacks like popcorn and milkshakes. The adventurous can take a free morning helicopter transfer to the V&A Waterfront for a day of shopping, wining and dining, a visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium or a tour of the colourful Mother City. The hotel offers additional complimentary scheduled road transfers to Camps Bay and to and from the V&A Waterfront, between 8am and 9:30pm daily. Until next time, happy travelling. Trev

Less extra baggage, more extra cash So maybe you’ve noticed that the seat you’re in seems a bit snug, and the seat belt is working a little too hard. Where to eat in the Western Cape

Salty Sea Dog

Both big and little kids love fish and chips, so head to the Salty Sea Dog for harbour-side, firm, just-caught fish in cracklingly crisp batter. There are fat, salt-slaked chips that come from real potatoes (not that processed and reconstituted rubbish), with lashings of malt vinegar. It is quite a small venue, but don’t worry, the owners have a plan. The sign above the door: ‘Every seat counts. Dion Vengatass is the sous chef at the Mount Nelson Hotel, Cape Town. Originally from Actonville in Benoni, he is now the rising star of the Cape culinary scene. He says his granny inspired his interest in flavour because ‘she was always making curry powders’. But while she may have lit the spark, it was his uncle who fanned the flames of his foodie obsession. Says Dion: ‘None of it would have happened without my uncle, who runs a wholesaler in Komatipoort. He used to employ me in the school holidays and I would cook for him at night. Then

one day we were watching Top Billing on TV together and we saw a chef from the Swiss Hotel School doing a demonstration. And he said to me, ‘Would you like to go there?’ And the rest is history. I found my passion.’ 021 483 1000 or restaurantreservations@ mountnelson.co.za 1

How to dress in the Western Cape Ah, hipster central. Cape Town residents spend a lot of time and money looking borderline-homeless, but still perfectly on trend. It’s a fine art, but with a few key purchases you’ll have the hipster look mastered in no time. Just remember to pair everything with Apple gadgets. 1) If you love Cape Town (and who doesn’t?), show it with a local necklace from A Ring To It with your neighbourhood’s name on it. Whether it’s Woodstock or Camps Bay, Gardens or Green Point, you can proudly show off your hood. R470, Hellopretty.co.za 2) Backpacks are an absolute must in the Mother City, and that goes for

guys and girls. This striped backpack from Past Present is practical, but still looks enough like something your grandfather handed down to you. R350, Helloman.co.za 3) You want everything in your wardrobe to look vintage, even if it isn’t. This vintage-look leather belt will fool anyone (if your local hospice doesn’t have your size in stock, that is). WESTERN CAPE | GUIDE

Where to sleep in the Western Cape THE WHOLE VINE YARDS Anthony Sharpe escapes into a fairy tale at the Vineyard Hotel.

pictures: supplied

CAPETONIANS KNOW THAT if it’s raining anywhere in the city, it’s pouring in Newlands. Such was the case when we pulled into the cobbled driveway of the Vineyard Hotel, nestled in the shadow of the south-eastern side of Table Mountain. The inclement weather made us only keener to tuck into dinner – one of the hotel’s bimonthly winter wine-paired dinner series, served up in the cavernous, but cosy, Square Restaurant. Our winery for the evening was Cederberg Private Cellar, with winemaker David Nieuwoudt waxing bluntly about his passion for Chenins and Cabernet Sauvignons, eschewing the usual flowery patois in favour of a funny, honest approach. After opening proceedings with the 2009 Brut, we sipped, nibbled, glugged and chewed our way through an intelligently constructed menu – pairing Cajun calamari with the 2013 Chenin Blanc; chicken-liver pâté and Parma ham with a surprising 2013 Bukettraube; sirloin steak with a rich 2011 Cab Sauv; and meringue, raspberry ice cream and chocolate torte with a 2011 MerlotShiraz blend. I knew things had taken a turn for the strange when I shared a shot of the sirloin’s blue-cheese sauce with the F&B duty manager, David Wibberley, but somehow everything

kulula.com

City_Guide_cape town .indd 21

makes sense when you’re quaffing great wine in great company (plus, it’s really good sauce). The dinners are R295 per person, and the hotel is running a special for two people, including a night’s stay, for R1 600. Check out the full schedule on the hotel’s website. Our room, on the third floor of one of the hotel’s many wings, was comfortable (especially after all that wine) and pretty roomy, with an enormous north-facing balcony, and a glorious view of the cloud-draped mountain and the lichen-draped roofs of the neighbourhood houses (seriously, it’s a damp part of the city). I could’ve spent a whole day up there, sipping on coffee brewed in the room’s Nespresso machine, but I sensed there was adventure to be had in the grounds beyond. One of the most intriguing things about the Vineyard is how much there is hidden behind its façade. Sprawling out from the main building lie acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, crisscrossed by paved paths, streams and footbridges, bordered on the far side by the bubbling Liesbeek River. We spent hours strolling in the cool autumn air, feeling like we’d stepped into the pages of The Secret Garden. For those seeking a little more activity, there’s a fully equipped onsite gym, a 20m outdoor pool, and a heated one indoors adjacent to the Angsana Spa, Splash Café, Imagenius store and hair salon. As for me, you’ll probably find me with my head down a tree stump somewhere down by the river, looking for fairies. Colinton Road, 021 657 4500, www.vineyard.co.za

Lugz: Canterbury Crossing Lots of kids say they don’t like curry – which is good, because it leaves more for the rest of us. The sign on the door says ‘Durban comes to Jo’burg’, and it does. Apparently, any Durbanite can tell you (but I didn’t know) that Lugz is KZN slang for Blue Lagoon, a beachfront hot spot favoured by South Africans of Indian origin. Lugz chef and owner Jacinta Naidu has caught the Durban mood without making her restaurant a theme park – Durban is on her plates, not in tourist photos of sand and sea. She makes marvellous Durbanstyle bean, mutton and chicken curries. As is to be expected from this South Indian-derived, diaspora food genre, the curries are searingly hot. My lamb bunny

Villa San Giovanni First there was French Women Don’t Get Fat; now there is French Children Don’t Throw Food. This parenting tome, written by Pamela Druckerman (an American mother of three who lives in Paris), looks at why French children eat adult food without complaint and don’t behave badly

How to dress in Gauteng It’s no secret that Jo’burg is where the money is. For this reason, Egoli’s fashion is a little more focused on bling and swag. Think sky-high stilettos, obvious labels and loads of accessories. ‘Understated’ and ‘pared-down’ are not terms that apply. 1) This eye-catching, locally made Afrigold piece can be worn as a necklace or a bracelet, making it a great addition to your wardrobe. Wear it to glam up a chic cocktail dress. in restaurants. Apparently it’s all to do with sending the little blighters to bed hungry with a smacked bottom if they don’t sit still and eat their tarte à l’oignon. If you’re not lucky enough to have French children, why not head for Villa San Giovanni, which has tables right next to the runway of Wonderboom airport? There’s plenty of deafening ‘broom broom weeeee’ as private planes take to the skies. Little boys, and quite a lot of bigger boys, think it’s fab, and no one expects them to sit still and shut up. You can’t go anywhere significant from Wonderboom, but the saltimbocca is delicious. Where to sleep in Gauteng YOU COULD BE IN NEW YORK Trevor Crighton escapes the Pretoria bustle at the Manhattan Hotel.

pictures: supplied

THE PHRASE ‘BUSINESS hotel’ doesn’t exactly conjure up images of glamour, luxury and calm, but the upmarket, three-star Manhattan Hotel in Pretoria ticks all of those boxes and more. From the moment you step off the Gautrain and into their on-demand hotel shuttle for the 250m journey, you can focus on the purpose of your trip, with distractions optional. The Manhattan is perfectly situated – in the heart of the Pretoria CBD – as a hub for meetings and training. Unisa, the University of Pretoria, and a variety of government departments and other training institutions are within a 5km radius, and are accessible via the hotel’s free shuttle service. After hours, the same shuttle can ferry you to some of Pretoria’s top leisure attractions, including Brooklyn Mall, Hatfield Square, the State Theatre, Freedom Park, the Union Buildings and

the National Zoological Gardens – at no charge. A welcome drink on arrival helps to make check-in a breeze, before you’re ushered to your choice of 213 plush, ensuite rooms, complete with flat-screen television and bar fridge. Catching up on emails is easy, thanks to free, high-speed wi-fi, accessible throughout the hotel. The Manhattan caters for special events and conferences of just about any size, with venues perfect for groups of less than 10, or up to 200. It can’t be all work and no play, though – and the Manhattan is geared for both. The on-site gym is open to ‘staying’ guests 24/7, and there’s also a full-service spa – the only hotel-based spa in the area – to help you to unwind or polish up ahead of closing that big business deal. The Bronx Bar is the perfect venue for a celebratory post-work drink, with daily live music accompaniment. That’s if you can make it past the Rockefeller Restaurant and its daunting 110-dish buffet dinners – you can famously stay at the Manhattan for three months without having the same dish twice. Choosing between the curry, seafood, braai, stir-fry and dessert stations may well be the toughest decision you make on your trip. Breakfasts are a similarly sumptuous affair, making visits to the inhouse gym mandatory. Visit for the convenient location, plethora of services and quality service – but stay for the great facilities, excellent food and stylish setting. 247 Scheiding Street, Pretoria, 012 392 0000, www.manhattanhotel.co.za

Where to eat in KwaZulu-Natal Daruma: Elangeni Hotel

Daruma was the first Japanese restaurant in South Africa and it is still one of the best. In recent years customers have been increasingly reluctant to eat at hotel restaurants, but such venues are experiencing a retrochic revival. Sit at a table (or even one of the private rooms) for business and romance, at the sushi counter for adult jolling and at the teppanyaki table if you come with kids – the chef’s performing seal-like knife and spatula skills will keep them happy for hours. 63 Snell Parade, Durban CBD, 031 362 1322

9th Avenue Bistro

When asked why customers rave about 9th Avenue Bistro, chef-patron Graham Neilson says: ‘It’s our great food, great service and our exquisite view of the car park.’ He’s right; the parking lot location is impressively dreadful, but everything else about the eatery is fantastic. Cooking is creative without being tricky and overly clever. Service is warm and welcoming, but never smothering. Whether you savour the quail breast and rillette melange with toasted potato bread and tomato chutney, explore the adventure of wild dagga flower-smoked kudu, or wipe the last of the roasted

white chocolate sauce from the yoghurt panna cotta plate, this is Durban’s finest restaurant. Shop 2, Avonmore Centre, 277 Avondale Road, Morningside, Durban, info@9thavenuebistro.co.za 2

How to dress in KwaZulu-Natal Durban is … how do we put this nicely … not too concerned with fashion. Here, it’s more about taking it easy and flitting from beach to bar. You don’t need much more than baggies and slops, but let’s try to do that as fashionably as we can, shall we? 1) On the rare occasion that you do wear long pants in Durban, go with something classic but still stylish, with good quality and fit. Chinos are always a good option for any occasion. R299, Woolworths 2) Forget about your faded baggies and denim cut-offs. If you’re going to wear shorts (and Durban weather allows for it pretty much year-round), opt for something soft and pretty, like these versatile, high-waisted navy shorts by Georgie.B. R480, Hellopretty.co.za

kulula.com

City_Guide_Durban .indd 31

3) No matter how laid back your city is, sometimes you may have to dress up just a tiny bit. This Posh Frock coral maxi dress is vibrant and super-chic, but easy to wear and great for dressing up or down. R1 600, Spree.co.za 4) Durban, we know you love headgear, but your Von Dutch caps need to be sent back to last decade, when DJ Sammy was a thing. Rather opt for something more modern and local, like this tartan cap by Grassbacks. R295, from Helloman.co.za 5) If Durban had official footwear, it would be flip-flops. Havaianas are really the only acceptable brand here, and with Soccer World Cup fever in the air once more, there’s never been a better time to get a Brazil-themed pair. R285, Zando.co.za

Where to sleep in KwaZulu-Natal NOT JUST ANOTHER GAME RESERVE Bridget McNulty ruins all other game parks in the country for herself at Phinda Private Game Reserve.

pictures: mark peddle

What makes the Phinda Private Game Reserve such an extraordinary place isn’t such an easy thing to pin down. Yes, it’s situated on a 23 000ha private game reserve in lush KwaZulu-Natal, with the Big Five and some of the best cheetah sightings in the world, but that’s not it – not exactly. Yes, it is the kind of luxury bush lodge that seems to exist only in the pages of exotic magazines, complete with decadent canopied beds looking out over free-roaming wildlife. But that’s not it, exactly. Perhaps what sets Phinda apart from so many other luxury bush escapes is the way the staff make you feel as if you’re the first guest they’ve ever had – and it feels like they really want to make your stay special. They do this in myriad ways. First, there are the truly superb game drives (morning and evening), where you are guaranteed some of the best wildlife stories you will ever hear, along with some of the best viewings you’re likely to see anywhere in South Africa. You can also go on a walking safari (highly recommended) or on a river cruise, because Phinda also offers river wildlife

kulula.com

City_Guide_Durban .indd 33

– a plethora of fabulous birds, hippos and crocs. It really does have it all. So what makes it different? The element of surprise. Most luxury game lodges will stop halfway through your game drive at a vantage point so that you can snack on tea and rusks (in the morning) or G&Ts and snacks (in the evening). It’s one of my favourite things about game drives, in fact: the juxtaposition of colonial culture with the wild. But when we stayed at Phinda, we were midway through our game drive when we turned a corner and there, underneath a tree, was a candlelit table, softly surrounded by flickering lanterns, set up with our sundowners for the evening (and thankfully no wild animals snacking on the biltong). It was a magical sight, and one I’ve never forgotten. Similarly, after a delicious threecourse meal on the vlei, with our hugely entertaining guide telling us dramatic wildlife escape stories, the last thing we expected when we returned to our suite was a candlelit bath with rose petals and a private chocolate fondue for two. Phinda offers these moments like unexpected gifts, peppered throughout your stay. It’s the little things that make a difference. Of course, it helps if all the big things are there – and at Phinda, they really are. You can choose from the romantic Phinda Vlei Lodge (where we stayed), or the Forest, Mountain, Rock or Zuka Lodge, all with their own special flavour, and all with the most exceptional service, food and suites. The only problem? Phinda is guaranteed to ruin you for any other game reserve experience, forever. St Lucia 011 809 4300, www.phinda.com

The festival is in support of The Kids of Kurland Project, which raises funds for the children of Kurland Village, an impoverished community some 20km to the east of Plett. Please note: This is not to be confused with the Storms River Fringe Festival – the most prestigious event on the Garden Route hairdressing calendar.

Where to eat in the Garden Route La Locanda

This old-style, family-run trattoria is perfect for a family outing. Even the fussiest of children will adore the perfect mozzarella-laden pizzas. Quick history lesson, kids: the margherita pizza is worthy of the woman after whom it was named – 19th century Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. Adults adore the al dente pastas. And everyone enjoys the best-ice cream selection in town. Décor snobs would be horrified by the Tuscan meets Alpine look, but who cares about the many old concrete garden urns when the food is this good? 124a York Street, George, 044 874 7803

Prana Lodge Private Beach Estate and Spa

Green goes gourmet at Prana Lodge Private Beach Estate and Spa. This Wild Coast haven has an organic herb and vegetable garden which serves up greeny-beeny beans and so much more. Organic lavender, pelargonium, aloe vera and violets are grown for the spa; eco-epicurean lemongrass, rocket, basil, mustard seed, beetroot, dill, horseradish, celery, peas (and of course the aforementioned beans) for the kitchen. Asian-French fusion is always the order of the day from chef Jaycee Ferreira and his talented team. Dishes change according to season and chef whim, but

expect the likes of two-way duck with raw herb salad and teriyaki glaze, and grilled sustainable line fish with lime-and-peanut soy butter. 043 704 5100, www.pranalodge.co.za 1

How to dress in the Garden Route The average outfit along the Garden Route is less ‘fashion’ and more ‘comfort is a style’. However, sensible outfits and clothing inspired by the earth needn’t be all hemp and tie-dye – there are more aesthetically appealing options out there. 1) Guys, your sensible, versatile T-shirts needn’t be cheap or boring. This classic version from Savior adds just a bit of visual interest to your chest area without putting you out of your comfort zone entirely – plus it’s affordable. R200, Helloman.co.za 2) Michelle Ludek’s designs are gorgeous and timeless, as well as being comfortable enough that you want to wear them all day, every day. This softwaisted pink dress is perfect for almost any occasion, and the colour is simply gorgeous. R595, Spree.co.za

3) Aztec is still in, so spruce up a casual outfit with a fun, vibrant print accessory, like this headband. Besides the fact that it’s totally practical for keeping your hair out of your face, the elasticated back means all-day comfort. R49.95, Woolworths 4) Antique Fusion Jewellery’s gorgeous silver twig ring is a modern, chic way of bringing a touch of nature into an outfit. This subtle piece is appropriate for daytime, work and evening functions, so you’ll get a lot of wear out of it. R580, Hellopretty.co.za 5) Practical handbags are a must, and this taupe Utopia boho bag is the perfect addition to any wardrobe. The colour means it will go with everything, and it’s large enough for you to carry most of your life around with you. R499, Zando.co.za

Where to sleep in the Garden Route OVER THE MOON Tony Mills finds magic at Emily Moon River Lodge.

pictures: supplied

Perched on a hill, rather like an eagle’s eyrie, Emily Moon River Lodge overlooks the winding Bitou River and wetlands below. This unique lodge is the brainchild of Mark Valentine, who nine years ago bought the rundown property from … wait for it … one Whiskey Wilson. With the help of his parents, Dianne and Simon, he painstakingly rebuilt this gem. Emily Moon derives its name from the story of a tumultuous love affair between Harry Mallard and Emily Moon. Both were intrepid adventurers and hunters in Africa. He lured her back from her adventures to this paradise of wetlands and the Bitou River, with love letters penned from the porch of his new home where he had set up a permanent camp.

kulula.com

City_Guide_gardenroute.indd 39

Mark, being a dealer of African and Indian artefacts, proceeded to bring into the lodge unique pieces of sculpture and exquisitely carved woodwork from across Africa and India. Around every corner of the lodge there is a surprise. An Elephant Gate from India, statuettes from Zambia, fish carvings perched on rooftops, all with their own tale to tell, make a visit to this lodge a unique experience. As a wedding destination, it spells romance, with magnificent views across the wetlands. There are two family lodges and eight double rooms, all overlooking the river. The dining room, Emily, seats 100 and is overseen by chef Alex Oliver, a Silwood Kitchen graduate. Evening meals are served by candlelight, creating the perfect ambience. It also boasts a well-stocked wine cellar to cater for every taste. Since the arrival of a sooty falcon, Falco concolor, a long way from home and spotted in a tree on the grounds, the lodge has become a destination for birdwatchers from across the world. With 126 species of birdlife in the area, it comes as no surprise that Simon Valentine is a fountain of ornithological knowledge. For the more adventurous outdoor types, there’s mountain-biking and canoeing, plus some of the finest hiking trails in the country. Legend has it that sometimes, on a clear, moonlit night, a woman dressed in white is seen drifting in a canoe on the river. After staying at Emily Moon, I’m willing to believe in a little magic. BARGAIN WINES | TOP TIPPLE

For what it’s worth...

You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy good-quality vino. Ingrid Graham pokes around in the bargain bin. ‘SO YOU’VE JUST turned 30! You haven’t changed a bit. With your personality you’ll never get old!’ Reassuring words indeed when you think that just 15 years ago you were in the ‘bloom of youth’. Fifteen years from now they’ll call you middle-aged, and 15 years hence you’ll be pensionable! A wine that hasn’t changed a bit since its launch 30 years ago is Graca. A fun, celebratory wrap in blue, yellow and green remembers 30 years of good times and fun – from winning the Rugby World Cup twice to surviving Y2K, hosting FIFA 2010, the birth of democracy and much more. This limited edition is priced at around R35 per bottle. Graca is best enjoyed with fun-loving familinos, friendinos and langostinos. Looking for good quality at reasonable prices? You can bet Obikwa wines will fill your needs. Launched in 2002 for the international market, Obikwa appeared locally in 2009. Enjoyed in more than 43 countries, the

kulula.com

range offered in South Africa includes Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Pinotage Rosé, Merlot, Cabernet, Shiraz, Pinotage and Moscato. Testimony to the consistent quality of the product is the number of accolades and awards garnered over several years. These include silver and bronze medals from Veritas, Michelangelo, International Wine Challenge, Best Value, Decanter World Wine, International Wine and Spirit Competition, and many more. Pick up a bottle for less than R40 – you’ll be pleasantly surprised! If you’re becoming upwardly mobile, you may want to try Uitkyk Carlonet, priced at around R100 per bottle from the cellar. I opened the 2010 for a special occasion and found the Cabernet Sauvignon beautifully balanced with ripe tannins. Tones of dried fruit and spice made a perfect partner to spicy baked chicken with prunes, dried peaches and pears. Needless to say, one glass wasn’t enough. You may also want to add Bosman Family Vineyards in Wellington to your collection. I had the delight of sharing Optenhorst Chenin Blanc 2011 and Bosman Pinotage with good company, and delicious fare to match. The Chenin grapes, from bush vines planted in 1952, originated from a single vineyard site called Optenhorst, which means

‘perched on top of a hill’. Barrelfermented and matured in French oak, this medley of fruits, citrus, honey and vanilla proves that the combination of site, soil and skill can produce a Chenin Blanc of exceptional quality with good ageing potential. The juicy Bosman Pinotage 2011 with berry and toffee overtones does Professor Abraham Izak Perold (a descendant of Wellington and the progenitor of Pinotage) proud. Both wines available at R200 per bottle ex-cellar.

Watch this… Murder, mayhem and monsters – yup, it’s another month at the movies.

KILL YOUR DARLINGS

EDGE OF TOMORROW

Now he’s free from the yoke of the Harry Potter franchise, Daniel Radcliffe is pursuing some interesting projects, like this flick about the formation of the Beat Generation from first-time director John Krokidas. Radcliffe plays Allen Ginsberg, who strikes up a friendship with William S Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan) while at Columbia University. When a student is murdered, the three are arrested as potential suspects, and the investigation moulds the young men’s minds into the icons they remain today. Reviews have been positive, praising in particular the performance of DeHaan, and it promises a more probing look at the formation of the Beat Generation than 2012’s On the Road. Anticipatometer: 4/5 ■ ■ ■ ■

It’s another big, expensive sci-fi action flick starring the Cruise Missile, following 2013’s Oblivion, which performed pretty well at the international box office. Cruise plays Major William Cage, an officer who has never seen a day of combat, who is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop, forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying over and over. Each time, however, Cage learns to fight the aliens better, and he teams up with legendary soldier Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) to defeat them. It looks like good old-fashioned movie fun; here’s hoping it’s edge-ofyour-seat viewing, too. Anticipatometer: 4/5 ■ ■ ■ ■

Toothless, the most adorable dragon in movie history, is back, along with his somewhat less adorable rider, Hiccup (voiced by the distinctly not adorable Jay Baruchel), in an adventure set five years after the first film, with men and dragons living in harmony. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, then the two friends find themselves at the centre of a battle aganst Eret the Dragonknapper and Drago Bludvist to protect the peace. The first was far better than any film with a title like How to Train Your Dragon had any right to be, so expectations for this remain reasonably high, despite sequelphobia. So what is a management fee and what exactly should it get you? Re: How Phat utilises this fee to enhance your brand and where every cent is money well spent. Cut fat. Add Phat. We strive above all else to become a natural extension of your business and that means holding nothing back. Teams work together to achieve the best possible outcome. To succeed in today’s competitive business environment you have to give it your all. And that’s what we do.

We are a brand activation company – Uhm what is that exactly? Well that depends upon who you ask. The words “brand activation” have become repeated so often that they have begun to lose focus and meaning. “I love boerewors.” “I love you.” Two phrases separated by one different word but with an entire ocean of meaning. (Not that there is anything wrong with a perfectly done piece of wors - it’s just not the whole braai.) To many people “brand activation” has become synonomous with “event management” or occassionally with “promotion”. It is none of these things and all of them… and actually a whole lot more. For example imagine hosting an event where, perish the thought, someone falls down the stairs. If you were working with us, the unfortunate delegate would be whisked away in an ambulance which we had standing by just in case. It’s called attention to detail. Dumbed-down to its absolute essence, real

_To Check_fcp.indd 2

brand activation is the process of making each and every touch point serve the values of your brand. It is about auditing and managing every channel to harmonise, to work together in concert and exponentially increase the power, reach and memorability of each and every one. Dumbed-down to its absolute essence real brand activation is the process of making each and every touchpoint serve the values of your brand.

This is a deep and complex enterprise. It requires a uniquely flexible multi-disciplinary approach. For some, managing an event is no more than hanging up a few logos and handing out a couple of t-shirts. The Phat approach is just not that skinny. We interrogate every aspect from an experiential point of view: What will it feel like to be there? What food will we serve? What digital channels can we employ to amplify the experience? What music will we play? What colour carpet should we choose? And most importantly, how will every single element of the experience serve the values of your brand? When you can answer all these questions and more, you begin to approach mastery of the real art of moving a product or service towards your target market.

Mining for diamonds. We are constantly ‘mining’ for diamonds of talent to be recruited as part of your dedicated team. We believe strongly in both dedication and specialisation. While a stunning model may be appropriate to a beauty brand and be

pure poetry in motion on the catwalk, they may not be the ideal person to promote a piece of transformational software or have the technical expertise to sell a complex hi-tech gizmo.

How the experiential cycle builds brand muscle. It’s all about horses dedicated to the demands of very specific courses. It’s also about adhering to the strict discipline of communication strategy and considering it in the context of every phase of the customer’s experiential cycle. How do we welcome them? How do we want them to feel? How do we engage them? What journey do we take them on? How do we keep them engaged with the brand at the close of the cycle? How do we move them into an ongoing dialogue through social media?

Nothing influences people like people The most complex, powerful and flexible media channel on the planet is the thing under your nose. It’s called a mouth. We never stop searching for talented individuals with dedication, enthusiasm, eloquence and charisma to carry brand activation messages

into the marketplace. We have discovered an unexpected benefit of building a fantastic team of talented charismatic people. The quality of our people is our most powerful attractor of likeminded individuals into our fold. Every member of your dedicated team is inducted into the values and idiosyncrasies

Living Media and Variable media are like your left and right hands. They complement each other by working seamlessly together. At its core, Variable Media™ is the planning, coordination and simultaneous execution of variable elements that combine to deliver a single, sharply focused brand experience across every conceivable channel (especially digital and social media channels). Living Media™ enable brands to interact with their advocates on a more personal and intimate level than ever before. We are not in the business of trying to sell you anything you don’t need.

Bees deserve to make a little honey. Good businesses deserve to make a little money....but... of your brand. They become a living breathing brand property whose success is linked directly to yours. The people we employ give brands: Identities. Values. Personalities. When every act of every brand ambassador and every employee is driven by shared values, the whole becomes far greater than the sum of its parts. Your ROI goes supernova. Unlike our competitors, Phat pays promoters/brand activators before clients pay us. This is extremely motivating for energetic individuals with a fantastic variety of special talents and skills.

You can’t step up to the next level if you trip on the step before it. Every successful advance depends upon the completion of the one that came before it. Thanks to a unique proprietary system, Variable Media™, we are able to leverage the experiential potential of a brand and then turbocharge it through strategic incorporation of Living Media™ properties in the form of hostesses, ushers, dancers or whatever the brand requires.

...and it’s a huge BUT: A management fee that does not provide physical tangible benefits and access to skills and talent that delivers a competitive edge can be regarded as a liability to those unfortunate enough to find themselves paying it...and that can taste like anything but honey. We are not in the business of trying to sell you anything you don’t need. For example, we are not trying to peddle office space. But we have it, and your management fee makes it yours if you ever need it.

Think of it as a menu and your management fee buys you access to everything that’s on it. Brand Activation Creativity & Innovation

Wake Up Happy Every Day

On Route in South Africa Sunbird This is the latest edition of a book first published in 1995, but don’t let that put you off for a second. This is a big, beautiful, fact-filled celebration of South Africa’s natural and cultural diversity. Part history book, part travel guide, all coffee-table worthy, it offers a huge range and depth of information about the villages, towns and cities of Mzansi, as well as the intriguing stories they harbour. The book is arranged into 37 chapters, beginning with Cape Town and radiating outwards, each complemented by detailed regional maps, route directions, and more than 500 photographs. It’s the perfect book to gift, covet or throw in your car, along with a backpack and an adventurous travel buddy.

Oliver Strange and the Forest of Secrets Dianne Hofmeyr Tafelberg This is the third in the series of Oliver Strange stories about the adventures of a young boy, his herpetologist father and his friend, Zinzi. This story sees Oliver and co heading to the forests of Colombia, filled with dangerous creatures, drugtraffickers and guerrillas. In the village of the Embera people, he meets a mysterious boy called Fabio, who harbours a secret pertaining to a horde of ancient gold. Ollie and Zinzi find themselves tested when Fabio disappears, leading them further and further into danger. It’s a rollicking adventure for kids, with a conservation message, as well as interesting facts pertaining to the jungle.

Stephen May Bloomsbury Circus Nope, it’s not a self-help book, but rather the latest novel from award-winning Brit author Stephen May. Wake Up Happy Every Day tells the story of Nicky, whose wildly wealthy old friend, Russell, drops dead in his bathroom on his 50th birthday. In the spur of the moment, Nicky comes up with an uncharacteristically daring plan: to become Russell, giving him, his wife and his young daughter a new shot at life – the best that money can buy. But when the foundations of their glittering new existence start to crack, the impact of Nicky’s hasty decision begins to be felt by all of those around him. It’s a morality tale, laced with black humour, which explores the notion of the grass really being greener on the other side of the fence.

Warpaint

pictures: supplied

Warpaint Rough Trade Records Warpaint is not just a band of girls – not by a long shot. The indie rock duo is a force to be reckoned with and this self-titled number is one of the more popular albums to emerge during 2014. It demonstrates a remarkable change in audiences as we understand them. No longer prone to the garish and predictable, audiences can pride themselves on their newly awakened discernment, especially in the younger generation. Our parents may have had art rock and experimentation; we have indie music and electronic influences. Combine these well and background music should become foreground music. It works well in Warpaint, if not as often as we might like. The combination of 80s disco, a healthy dose of funk and an ethereal quality to the music allows Warpaint to produce something with presence. While there is an arresting restlessness coming from the vocal harmonies, more foreground music would have made this album their strongest yet.

kulula.com

Jeremy Messersmith Heart Murmurs Glassnote Entertainment This fourth full-length album from the American indie instrumentalist is what it says it is: a story about love and relationships. What the name and lyrics don’t tell you is that Jeremy Messersmith has produced a rather compelling album. It’s charismatic and layered, with a heavily intertwined melody line, giving every song a lovely atmosphere. In fact, this album deserves to be a soundtrack to a movie; it has that immense landscape quality. His music catches your ear, just as a lovely figure may catch your eye, and it was enjoyable getting to know its intricacies. Messersmith seems to borrow a little too much from various influences and, after a good many listens, gets a little dull about the edges, but you can’t deny he has remarkable songwriting skills. An album easy to love, perhaps too easy to break up with – but nevertheless something to learn from while in those loving moments.

Pharrell Williams Girl RCA Records

Multi-Grammy Award-nominated Pharrell Williams has everything on his side, and 2013 seemed to pile on the good fortunes. Daft Punk, Robin Thicke, ‘Happy’ – he turned up in some unfamiliar places and garnered a fresh and ample following of fans. Unsurprisingly, then, reaction to his second album, Girl, has been legions apart. Strong reaction to the celebration of women which falls despairingly flat, versus an overwhelming love of his gorgeous voice and funky style, has pulled his followers in all directions. I guess it all depends on what matters. So let’s talk about the music. Girl seems completely dominated by the collaborating artists, which mixes up the dominant funk groove in interesting ways, but results in nothing speaking too loudly or clearly. It’s all very promising, but there seems very little worth listening to that hasn’t been heard before. The music is low-level repetitive and will probably be quickly forgotten in our mass-produced world.

Hair loss?

“Your hair becomes much heavier and thicker. You maintain your healthy hair.”

How a new pill can boost your hair – and your self-confidence Hair loss can be a nightmare for both men and women. It can make you look less attractive, lead to disadvantages within your career, and limit you in your partner choice. It can lead to depression, loss of self-confidence and even identity change. Scientists in Oxford promise that they can help to keep your hair thick and healthy. Their pill TRX2 is currently one of Europe’s best-selling hair supplements and is sold in over 90 countries. TRX2 is based on organic compounds and, compared to medicinal products for hair loss, has no side-effects. “Your hair will look much bigger; it becomes heavier and thicker. You maintain your healthy hair,” says Oxford Biolabs CEO Dr Thomas Whitfield. Hair-loss treatments often promise a lot without delivering, but TRX2 is backed by

Oxford Biolabs_Final_fcp.indd 1

cutting-edge science and has been thoroughly tested. According to a study, TRX2 works for 87% of men and women. The results can be impressive – hair thickness may increase by 22.5% after nine months and 38.7% after 18 months of treatment. Start TRX2 as early as possible in order to increase the chances of fully regaining your hair. At a cost of about R700 ($70), TRX2 is suitable for men and women of all ages. The crystalline white capsules come in a brown glass bottle, sufficient for one month of treatment. The manufacturer offers a money-back guaranty if ordered via TRX2’s official website, and ships worldwide. www.trx2.com, contact@trx2.com Oxford Biolabs Ltd, The Oxford Science Park, Oxford, UK

The third title in the Sniper Elite series is the first to grace the enhanced hardware of Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. The game transports players to the North Africa conflict of World War II, where Germany’s infamous Afrika Korps have Allied troops overwhelmed with their superior numbers and firepower. Rumour has it the Nazis are developing a superweapon in Africa that could bring the world to its knees. You must ensure that it never sees the light of day. It features enormous new environments that offer a multitude of choices in how to approach deadly situations. Be stealthy and use traps, distractions and more to silently dispatch foes. The new Relocate mechanic lets you vanish quickly into the shadows if you’re discovered. The entire campaign can be enjoyed cooperatively by two players. The slowmotion X-ray kill cam returns (and now applies to vehicle kills as well), and there’s a range of multiplayer modes to enjoy. Pre-order early from BT Games to get a free T-shirt.

lease New re EA Sports UFC EA has a reputation for putting together some of the best sports games in the industry, so when UFC head honcho Dana White announced that they’d teamed up with EA Sports to deliver a game based on the fighting franchise, people got pretty excited. They got even more excited when it was confirmed that the team behind the excellent Fight Night series of boxing games would be developing the game. EA Sports UFC is what people in the industry like to call ‘a truly next-gen game’, which is a fancy way of saying it looks gorgeous. Fighters are presented in a way that fully simulates their movements and animations, as though they were physically present, throwing punches, kicks and grappling manoeuvres in an incredibly realistic way. This is a serious sports simulation, but be prepared for a few touches of oddity, such as the inclusion of Bruce Lee on the roster of fighters. A pre-order from BT Games gets you the Bruce Lee Character and Royce Gracie day-one access!

Minecraft. Is there anyone left out there who hasn’t heard of it? The indie megahit makes millions of rands in sales every single day – and that’s just the PC version. In addition to mobile and Xbox 360 versions, late last year the PS3 version was released, offering up the same beloved mining and crafting goodness to owners of Sony’s console. What makes the game so popular? Well, it’s pure sandbox creation, like a digital version of LEGO. With zombies. And gardening. And protecting your precious gardens from nasty zombies. Meanwhile, Creative mode removes all danger and simply lets you build whatever your imagination desires.

GUIDE | TECH

Talking tech The latest gizmos and tech developments, brought to you by Steven Norris of Gearburn.com.

June means only one thing – to gamers, at least. E3’s the biggest, greatest gaming conference of the year, with the world’s top video gamemakers showing off their stuff. Want to know what the Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U games will be for 2014 and 2015? E3’s the place to be. Games on show include Destiny, Alien: Isolation, Below, The Evil Within, The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros, Battlefield 5 and lots more. We may even see a new console launch if we’re lucky. E3 takes place from 10 to 12 June in Los Angeles.

Samsung S5 mini-review Interested in owning what will soon be the most popular Android phone on earth? Then you’ll love Samsung’s Galaxy S5. With a beautiful 5.1-inch display and loads of processing power, there’s very little to fault the S5 – except for all of its pointless gimmicks, such as the fingerprint reader (rarely works), heart-rate monitor and Air Gestures. It’s also fairly expensive; when combined with Samsung’s Gear 2

56

tech 29.indd 56

smartwatch, the entire package could cost well over R12 000. But if you simply need the latest smartphone and have money to burn, the S5 may just be for you.

How to get noticed on Instagram For those new to Instagram, think of it as Facebook and Twitter combined, but minus the boring parts. It’s all just photos of stuff people like, such as food, their pets and the ever-changing Cape Town weather. So get your Instagram on and become that worldfamous online photographer you’ve always dreamed of being. Instagram, though, is just like most social networks – so how do you get people to like your photos? Like this: Use popular hashtags such as #instagood and #photooftheday. Hashtags help to categorise photos, making it easier for your friends to find them. Edit your photos well. Instagram is filled with filters and photo-editing tools, but don’t be limited by that. Download mobile photo apps such as Snapseed to take your Instagram shots even further.

Join an Instagram community. Whatever photos you love taking, there’s a community on Instagram for that. Love black-and-white photos? Join Streetphoto_BW. Or join the Ink361 group on Instagram for the community pick of photos of the day. For more insightful gadget and gaming news, visit gearburn.com.

Love your ears

In-flight or at home, decent headphones are a must. Here’s five of the best money can buy, as road-tested by Steven Norris of Gearburn.com.

Monster Diamond Tears Prepare yourself for the sparkliest, shiniest headphones ever made. The Monster Diamond Tears have the sound clarity of diamonds ... but are made for those with tiny heads. Yes, if your head is too big, the Monster Diamond Tears headphones will squash your skull like a grape. That R2 750 price tag, though ... beauty always comes at a price.

Razer Hammerhead Pro These are the only in-ear headphones on the list, but they’re so mind-blowing that they deserve a mention. The Razer Hammerhead Pros are lean, mean, green and drive sound directly into the brain. That’s, at least, how it sounds to us. They sound so incredible because of the surprising level of bass present in each ear. For gamers on the go, it would almost be impossible to find in-ear headphones at this price (RRP is R800) with this range of sound.

Monster Sports MVP Carbon Jabra Revo Wireless The award for the most stylish and useful headset should go to the Jabra Revo Wireless, a Bluetooth headset with a beautiful trick: control is gesture-based. Want to raise the volume? Run a finger around one of the headphones to increase the sound. Play, Stop, Pause and Skip are all present on the earcup, meaning that you never have to be removed from the music. There’s no fighting with buttons – just clean sound and innovative controls. RRP is R3 000.

Razer Kraken 7.1 Those who don’t know who Razer is are missing out. From one of the best gaming gadgetmakers around comes the Kraken 7.1, an extremely comfortable headset with seven channels of USB-powered noise. With a pull-out microphone and a nifty, glowing, luminous-green finish, the Razer Kraken 7.1 is design genius. Sound is fantastic too – these may even be the best-sounding headphones of the lot. Even the digital microphone is hard to beat. RRP is a reasonable R1 100. 58

EA and Monster teamed up to make one of the best gaming headsets around. Comfort is key and the Sports MVP Carbon headphones have inline controls (volume dials on the extremely long cord) to make life even easier. The headphones are also nice and cosy, making extended gaming sessions a pleasure. Sound is deep and bass-filled, with thumping tunes and gaming both made infinitely better when wearing the Monster Sports MVP Carbon. RRP is R2 450.

Oliver Booth: Hi Toya. Where are you at the moment? Toya Delazy: I’m at home in Mahlabathini, at my grandparents’ place. OB: Awesome. What have you been up to? TD: I landed two days ago, and I’m in a weird vibe because each time I’m here, I get this bad hayfever. So I slept till 12pm today; I was just knocked out. And now I’ve been chatting to my grandparents. I’m leaving on a flight at six tomorrow, so we’re just trying to catch up. Bonding. OB: That’s not ideal. How do you perform if you’ve got hayfever? TD: It’s been a crazy weekend! I had this show with the Philharmonic, and I hadn’t slept the night before because my friend was in an accident, then I had to be up to go through rehearsals. It’s just been a mad rush. I think only the musicians could hear during the performance that my voice was a bit tired. OB: Shame, man. Well, thanks for taking the time for the interview. First official question: is there a new album on the way? TD: Yes, there’s a new album on the way. That’s what I’m busy with. I travelled up to Durban to meet up with potential producers. There’s so much behind-thescenes work, it’s just insane, but yeah, the album’s gonna be out soon. OB: Have you set a date yet or is it still under wraps? TD: Probably by the end of winter. OB: Do you have a name yet or are you still deciding? TD: I can’t tell you that yet. OB: Aaah … But you can tell me off the record, huh? TD: Off the record, yes! [Laughs] OB: Only joking. I saw on Twitter earlier that your last album, Due Drop, has been certified gold. That is frikkin awesome.

kulula.com

Interview 1_1.indd 63

TD: Yeah, in this day, dude. Back in the day, you know people used to sell millions of albums, but in this age of downloading, to get gold is big! I’m super-amped. I never thought I’d do it. OB: That’s amazing. How does it work? Do you get a plaque? TD: Ja, it’s a big plaque from Sony, just to say, ‘Ja, dude, she’s sellable.’ OB: Have you got a space set aside for it at home? TD: Ag, I’m gonna have to get permission to drill into the walls, you know. OB: [Laughs] TD: So it’s still chilling in my studio. OB: Now how do you celebrate achievements like this? Do you just move onto the next thing or do you have a party? TD: I’m one of those people who have to celebrate. It may not be a huge celebration, but the peeps I care about and who care about me, we go down the road, and have some fun to remember the whole occasion and the journey. OB: So you live in Cape Town now? TD: Yeah, I’m Capetonian now, bru. OB: How’s that? TD: It’s super-chilled, hey. It’s so beautiful! OB: It is. But I find it’s quite distracting, actually. I should be working and then I’ll just find myself gazing out at the mountain. TD: Ja, dude! It started off like that, but I had to catch a wake-up. I told myself, if I moved down here, then I wouldn’t slip into the whole web of staring at the beach for an hour. I had to try to keep with the momentum of Jo’burg, because I moved down from there, and you know it’s a fast city. But this side, even when I’ve been working on my album, it hasn’t been as hectic as it was in Jo’burg. OB: I don’t know if you find this, but it changes people. My sister grew up in Cape Town and she was chilled,

but now that she lives in Jo’burg, she just can’t chill. A month in advance, everything is planned, and she’s just on it! TD: [Laughs] OB: Here in Cape Town, I’ll often find myself having, like, a meeting about a meeting. ‘Ja, next time we’ll chat about what we need to chat about, but right now let’s catch up over some coffee.’ TD: I know, dude. OB: Now, in terms of music, how do you find things in Cape Town? Better than Jozi, or does it not really matter, because you’re touring? TD: I find myself writing music everywhere that I’m at. Personally, I’m glad that I’m based in Cape Town for this album. For my previous album I was based in Durban, and I like the beach, I like chilled vibes. In Jo’burg you just end up talking about your new car and stuff like that. I needed to connect to myself, and being in Cape Town gave me that refuge, that time to think about the next journey. Because my music is about something. I’m not just flashing; I’ve got something to share. I actually find myself writing on the plane quite often, because I travel a lot. OB: And fashion-wise? You’ve got your label with Legit. My girlfriend’s actually got a pair of your shoes – not literally your shoes… TD: I was gonna be, like, ‘Hey, bring those back!’ [Laughs] OB: [Laughs] How’s that been for you? TD: Working with Legit gave me the experience that I need now that I’m planning to release my own label, Fried Dough. I called it that because when I was growing up, I ate a lot of magwinyas – they’re literally fried dough. So yeah, it’s fresh, it’s crispy. That’s what I’m up to right now: I’m putting all my ideas down on paper and I’m designing clothes. Let’s see where it goes. Right now I’m just

dressing myself, but hopefully with all the experience i gained from Legit. it was a wonderful foundation. OB: You’ve got an awesome personal style. Who inspired your fashion sense? TD: How can i say it? i could say i’m inspired by street wear and vintage wear. The combination of the two. When you have that combination, you can be funky and formal at the same time. it’s the same with my music. i guess that’s what inspires me: punk, goth, while at the same time princesses and elegance. OB: That’s awesome. And how do you find the fashion in Cape Town? TD: it’s quite hippy, and that’s super-cool. Hippies don’t wanna be controlled by nobody, you know? Whereas when i’m in Johannesburg, it’s very status-minded. You don’t see much individual creativity, and that’s what i feel fashion is about. it’s not about wearing Gucci; it’s about how you wear your clothes.

kulula.com

Interview 1_1.indd 65

OB: Okay, now do you have a specific pre-gig routine? I get very nervous before stand-up shows, so I like to pace and do breathing exercises to calm myself down. TD: Yeah, before every show i’ll obviously rehearse with the band. Then what i usually do is the whole mirror thing. You’re in front of the mirror, you’re trying to connect with your zen, and usually i say a prayer, just calling out to the universe. i get extremely nervous before shows. Especially if there’s chanting; once i hear ‘Toya! Toya!’ i’m like, ‘Oh my goodness, guys, i need the loo!’ OB: [Laughs] TD: And everyone’s like, ‘But you already went to the loo.’ Well, i need it again! so yeah, that’s what i get up to. OB: Sheesh. I see you were nominated for a BET Award. How was that experience? Do you see yourself moving overseas at any point?

TD: Yeah. When i was up there at the BETs, it was surreal, because i’m an African from KZN, and the whole journey there i was rubbing shoulders with and chatting to miguel. Wow, man! it filled me with inspiration and i know now that i can take south African music to the next level. so that’s definitely the dream: expanding and sharing the music with the rest of the world. it’s something i’d really love to do. OB: Well, good luck. Do you try to go over every now and then? Do you have any imminent plans to go over? TD: Yeah, definitely. if i don’t take the opportunity, i’ll never know. i’m at the point where i’ve travelled all of south Africa and i’m already gigging across the continent, so it’s time to see where i stand in the rest of the world. i’ve had a great response. OB: Musically, who or what inspires you? Do you sit down and say, right, today I’m gonna write as much as I can, or is

CHAT | music

it more about creativity hitting you and then writing it down? TD: It’s more spur-of-the-moment. This album that’s coming out is about real-life occurrences, things that hit me at the time. I’ll be hanging out and maybe someone will say something that triggers a thought, or I’ll just feel it. It’s all about the feeling and the journey. If the moment’s right and I feel it, my laptop and my mini piano are there; I just put it down, otherwise I forget it. I remember I wrote a song on the streets of Bangkok, and I took [my manager] Ally’s phone and just sang into it. Music has become my life; it’s very organic. OB: What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far? TD: Doing it. Taking the jump and doing it. Being in front of the continent with my art, with this thing that didn’t exist two years ago, and having it as a package that I’m sharing with the world. It was quite a highlight to have my first gold album, to perform at the BETs, to perform with legends like Oliver Mtukudzi from Zimbabwe and Baaba Maal – all those bands you hear growing up. It just brings such a relevance to what you do. OB: This being the Young @Heart issue, what would you like the youth to learn from you and your music? TD: I think I just want them to explore more and not limit themselves. Sometimes you get an idea and just because it hasn’t been done before, you close your mind to it. Basically, you’re as young as you let your mind be. I want the youth to try things. Youth isn’t there forever, so travel, put your ideas down, and believe in yourself to the point where you do something about what you’re thinking of. OB: Okay, cool. Thank you so much. It was awesome to chat to you. TD: Aw, man, Ollie, you’re chilled. Thanks so much for having me.

Oliver Booth: Hey there Siya, how’s it going? Siya Kolisi: Cool man, how are you? OB: Great, thanks. So the theme for this issue is Young @Heart. I heard you enjoy clowning around. What’s the funniest prank you’ve pulled on another player? SK: Ag I just like to joke around with all the guys. scarra is a guy who laughs all the time so I like to make him laugh, especially because he has such a contagious laugh. I don’t know if you watch Leon schuster films but if you know shorty, scarra laughs just like him. OB: [Laughs] That’s brilliant. Do you guys stay together? SK: We used to. We stayed together for three years. OB: Then did his laugh eventually become a bit too much for you? SK: Not too much. OB: Now I see you cite Bob Skinstad as one of your role-models. How come we don’t ever see you sticking your tongue out? Or do you keep that move for the ladies? SK: [Laughs] I’m too scared to injure it in contact. OB: I also see you drive a sponsored car with your name on it. Do you ever feel pressure while driving because people know who’s behind the wheel? Or do you just think, ‘Nah, I don’t care if I drive badly; I’m an international rugby star’? SK: I don’t feel too pressurised. Ag, it really annoys me when people drive badly. I wouldn’t want to do it to someone else. My name isn’t on the car anymore, but when it was there, I never really bothered to drive badly. I just want to make sure everyone’s safe on the roads.

Interview 2.indd 69

I was really scared to get behind the wheel. My legs would just be shaking from nerves OB: I wish more drivers had that attitude. Cape Town must have some of the worst drivers in the world. People just endanger others. SK: It’s not cool. OB: Speaking of driving, I don’t know if this is the case anymore, but Nick Köster said you used to struggle with changing gears. I can relate, because after leg day at gym, I really struggle with clutch control. SK: [Laughs] I actually couldn’t drive at all. Nick was trying to teach me, but I was probably the worst student ever. so many people tried to teach me and all of them failed, because I was really scared to get behind the wheel. My legs would just be shaking from nerves. OB: Nick actually taught me to drive too. The first time he tried to teach me I crashed his bakkie. I reversed into a wall on his farm. Nick also told me you drove over the physio in a golf cart. SK: oh yeah. We had fun in that golf cart. At that stage I still couldn’t drive; I didn’t have a licence. We were playing golf, and there was this little bridge, and I was trying not to go off the bridge, so I just went straight. And hit the physio. OB: [Laughs] I crashed a golf cart into this giant bush once and both of

If you have nothing or if you have everything, you should still believe and work the front tyres popped. We eventually had to get a tow-truck to pull it out. It would’ve been pretty great if you’d just walked away from that and said, ‘No one messes with Kolisi!’ SK: [Laughs] OB: How do you feel about Khaleesi on Game of Thrones? Would you ever consider marrying her? You could start a fashion label – call yourselves Khaleesi and Kolisi. The Dolce & Gabbana of rugby fashion. Do you like the association? SK: I actually like it, hey. A lot of people call me that. someone took a picture of me, with my face and her hair and a small dragon on my shoulder, and they put a stormers emblem on it. OB: People love those memes, man. SK: I think I look good with blonde hair. OB: [Laughs] Now a couple of serious questions. Sort of serious. What’s it like walking out of the tunnel into a packed Newlands stadium? Describe that feeling for me. SK: Sjoe, it’s nerve-wracking, but there’s a lot of excitement as well. And then when you’re tired, you use that energy from the crowd and your teammates – it’s amazing how that lifts you.

kulula.com

Interview 2.indd 71

OB: Awesome. And walking out at, say, Loftus or another local side’s packed stadium? Do you use their boos or their support for their home team to inspire you to go even harder? SK: When you play away from home, the motivation comes from your teammates. But we also have a lot of fans who come to watch wherever we play. OB: Obviously you were a successful young player, representing the Baby Boks, and now you’re a successful professional player. In any industry, some people who were successful as youths struggle making the step into adult leagues. What would you say was the key to making that step up? SK: I think it’s motivation. You’ve really got to want it and work hard for it. I was really hungry to succeed, so I had to work a lot harder than when I was a boy. You go through patches when you’re not doing so well, as I am now. But if you keep on working at it, it’ll come. OB: What would you like the youth to learn from you, from your approach to life? If there was one thing that kids could look up to and take from you, what would that be? SK: I think whatever background you come from, that shouldn’t be a problem. If you have nothing or if you have

everything, you should still believe and work. I didn’t have a lot, but I stayed active when I was a child. My family did everything they could to make me happy. I made my own dreams. I just kept on pushing, I kept on working, and I got to where I am today, and hopefully I’m going to achieve more. You can be

happy with what you have, but you must always know there is room for improvement, and always be willing to listen to other people’s advice. OB: So what has been the highlight of your career thus far? SK: Playing for the Springboks. OB: The first time you played for them, how did you contain your nerves? How did you keep yourself focused? Did you harness that nervous energy? Did it just happen naturally? SK: The coaches told me just to do what I was good at and what made me happy. And you know when you want

something so badly? I just thought: this is my chance. Even if it’s the only opportunity you get, you just do your best. OB: Yeah. Now tell me, what’s your secret to really big triceps? Is it gyming a lot or just wearing a really tight jersey? SK: [Laughs] Tight jersey. OB: [Laughs] I was watching some rugby clips on YouTube and I saw a clip where a guy got fined for peeing on the field. I’ve got a really weak bladder and I play five-a-side soccer, so even just 10 minutes in, I’ve got to wee.

What do you do if you’re stuck on the field, needing to wee? SK: Hold it in, my man. OB: But what happens if you take a big hit? You just go with it? SK: I’ve also got a weak bladder and I drink a lot of water, so when I’m on the bench, I go every 10 minutes. But when it happens on the field, you just gotta hold it. OB: Sheesh. Okay, well that’s pretty much it. Thanks so much, man. Good luck for the rest of the season. We’re rooting for you. SK: Thanks, man. Appreciate it.

The kids are

all right Ask ‘old’ people what young folk are like these days, and their reply will inevitably start with ‘In my day, kids had respect’ or ‘When I was young, we did our chores’. And their thesis statement is usually: ‘Youth is wasted on the young.’ I’ve been guilty of this kind of thinking myself. At braais, you may even have heard me arguing (with some

76

success, I might add) that it is morally defensible to hate teenagers. But then I think back to what I did with my time as a teenager and young adult: playing Starcraft in my cousin’s garage, watching bands and whining about them not being punk enough, and smashing my shins on various street obstacles on a skateboard sums up about 10 years of my life. I can’t think of one useful thing I did.

And what makes me feel even worse is young south Africans making a real difference. Whatever your thoughts about the future, it has to be at least a little brighter if we keep producing young people such as katleho Mohale, Angela larkan, kholofelo Moyaba and doug Hoernle. I, in the meantime, am going to go take a long, hard look in the mirror.

Katleho Mohale Not many 18-year-olds have founded their own non-profit organisation, but Katleho Mohale is not your average teenager. When he was 16, he was selected to attend a two-month leadership programme in New York. He saved his spending money while he was there, and on his return to Cape Town, heard about a soccer team in the Philippi Township in desperate need of gear. ‘I just felt it in my heart to help them, so I used the money to buy them soccer boots and shin guards.’ This, despite the fact that Katleho doesn’t come from money. ‘I grew up with my mother. It’s always been her and me. We are far from rich. Though we struggle financially, we always pull through. All glory to God for that.’ After making the donation, Katleho decided to found his own non-profit called Katleho’s Give2Talent. The idea is simple: Katleho tries to link needy sports teams with donations of cash or equipment. ‘I’ve continued to give to the team in Philippi, and I have also given soccer boots and soccer balls to a team in Klipheuwel Township. Right now I am working on getting exposure for my organisation, because I need donations. ‘I’m also working on building Klipheuwel soccer team a decent soccer field, and donating more equipment for them so they can have a good, solid season and many more ahead. My plans for the future are to donate to more teams in Cape Town across the sporting codes. I would also love to continue to donate to teams throughout South Africa and Africa. We are open to any type of help that people can offer.’ Katleho’s message for South Africa’s youth: ‘It is up to us to stand up and make

a difference, rather than sit and complain about other people not doing anything. We need to start taking responsibility for our nation, because if anybody is going to change it, it’s going to be the young people. Use your passion or talent to fuel it. Let’s step up and do something.’ Find out more at www.katlehosgive2talent.co.za.

Angela Larkan Angela Larkan is the founder of Thanda, a nonprofit that empowers children in disadvantaged rural communities to develop sustainable solutions, so they grow up to be active citizens who have concern for their community and the environment, and have the skills with

which they can gain or create employment. The project is a great success, supporting 450 children daily and reaching more than 3 000 children annually with education and life skills. It recently won the Mail & Guardian Investing in Life award. Angela started her first charity when she was 19, and it was around this time that she began researching the issue of orphans and Aids in KwaZulu-Natal. ‘I was studying overseas and there was a lot of attention about Aids, but I was concerned that no one was really worrying about the kids who would be left orphaned. I knew we didn’t have the resources or infrastructure to help so many children, so I started researching different models of care to see what could be scaled up.

LET’S TALK BUSINESS Kholofelo Moyaba encourages youth to add value, whatever their situation.

‘I saw school buildings, in even the most rural communities, empty every afternoon. I also saw overburdened households being run by grandmothers, children without role-models, and unemployed youth. If you put it all together, you have the Thanda model: previously unemployed youth running after-school programmes in the local school buildings every afternoon, to provide food, emotional support, education and life skills to children who are growing up in overburdened households. ‘It’s low-cost and particularly effective, because we take it even further – children at Thanda are finding a role for themselves in the community and within the bigger picture. They learn about care for the environment, rural development, entrepreneurship and active citizenship as they engage in community projects and start to see opportunities around them.’ With Thanda going strong and Angela looking to expand it in the future, she admits that it’s been a learning curve. ‘I have learned to stay flexible and adjust

kulula.com

Local Hero 29.indd 79

programmes as needed; to see the children and community as partners in change, rather than as beneficiaries; to fix broken bakkies and get out of sinking mud. I have learned that, above all, it’s important to stay true to your mission, even as projects change and develop.’ Angela’s message for South Africa’s youth: ‘History is being made right now. The future of South Africa is what we want it to be – so roll up your sleeves, get out there and stand up for what you believe in, to make the changes you want to see.’ Find out more at www.thanda.org.

Kholofelo Moyaba Innovation is in Kholofelo Moyaba’s blood. Born in Seshego, a township close to Polokwane in Limpopo, 21-year-old Kholofelo is that rare person with both artistic flair and a sharp mind for business. ‘I have always been into art. As I got more involved in technology, I started playing with graphics software and creating art digitally. From there I just

started accumulating more knowledge, using my creativity and finding new ways of applying it using computer software.’ Kholofelo freelanced as a designer while studying Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cape Town, and as his skills developed, so did his interest in software and app development. When GoMetro, a Cape Town-based startup, wanted to develop an app, Kholofelo was the guy they turned to. The app won a few awards, including overall third place in the international leg of the Vodafone Appstar 2013 contest held in Kenya. Kholofelo was awarded a Fellowship from the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation and is now an innovation specialist at the South African Reserve Bank. He plans to start his own company in the near future. ‘The youth of the country’s democracy is inspirational: it’s still malleable, so we have the opportunity to guide it the way we want it to go. I’m inspired by the possibilities that exist. Being young gives you a lot of freedom to try so many things. I’m inspired by people who believe in us as young Africans, and I’m inspired by African innovation, arguably the purest type of innovation, as it’s based on necessity, as opposed to convenience or luxury.’ Kholofelo’s message for South Africa’s youth: ‘Strive to be significant. In whichever situation you are in, think about what value you are adding and what value

RETHINKING EDUCATION Doug Hoernle is committed to bridging the gap between technology and curriculums.

is being added to you. Try things out; be comfortable with both failure and uncertainty. We young people are filled with promise and potential, but that, on its own, is not enough. We need to leave our comfort zones and be proactive.’

Doug Hoernle Two of South Africa’s hottest topics are supporting entrepreneurship and improving education. Doug Hoernle has combined the two in the most awesome way. At just 23, he is a Fellow of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation and already has a number of businesses under his belt, but it’s his latest creation, Rethink Education, which is gaining major traction. ‘Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” My personal mission is to do just that, so I decided to focus my time on providing as many learners as I can with an education. I realised that there was a great opportunity to create

kulula.com

Local Hero 29.indd 81

an online content platform for high schools in South Africa, as there wasn’t a lot of content available that was useful to students, aside from print content that publishers were digitising. ‘Many high schools in South Africa are spending huge amounts of capital making their schools “Wi-Fi zones” and equipping students with a computer, tablet or mobile phone. However, right now there is very little that a student can do with this technology that is aligned with the South African school curriculum. The technology is there, the curriculum is there, but the connection between them isn’t. Rethink Education bridges that gap. ‘The average high-school learner doesn’t engage with technology as one might expect. They are not interested in learning by means of traditional PCbased educational software. They don’t just want an electronic textbook. In their preferred use of technology, they interact;

they use “chat”-styled community platforms such as Mxit, WhatsApp, BBM, Facebook and Twitter. The Rethink Education platforms feed into this style preference by delivering educational content broken down into “bite-size bits” and presented through a chat interface. ‘Rethink’s platforms give learners access to high-school mathematics and science content in a chat-styled interface, via both mobile and web. To date we have over 250 000 high-school students on our various platforms, making us one of the largest education platforms in South Africa.’ Doug’s message for South Africa’s youth: ‘Take any and every opportunity that is given to you. The more opportunities you get involved in, the more likely it will be that you will find yourself starting a successful business. Most important, however: make sure you have fun doing it!’ Find out more at rethinkeducation.co.za.

The way of the wave There’s something about surfing. It’s simplicity in the extreme. It’s harnessing the power and beauty of nature with not much more than a piece of wood. It’s being that guy in the magazine, in that picture, inside the tube. In terms of getting away, it’s a lifetime pass to something new. There are few places on the planet better suited to learning than Muizenberg in Cape Town. The beach is home to temperate waters and perfectly shaped, easy-to-ride waves, all year round. To drive past that long bay and not see surfers bobbing in the breakers is rare. First-timers to pros are well looked after by a bunch of well-established schools along the beach. It’s as simple as pitching up and signing up. One 90-minute class, gear and teacher included, is all it takes to get hooked. Freefall! Orlando is in the heart of Soweto, which is in the heart of Johannesburg, which is the urban heart of modern africa. The Orlando Towers were once integral to providing power to a chunk of the city; today the factory is gone, but the towers and their knack for lighting a fire remains. a SCaD (Suspended Catch air Device) freefall is true falling, totally unattached. Terrified adventure-junkies are winched up to a height of 70m inside the core of the old tower, dangled there for an exquisite eternity (a few seconds), then dropped, screaming and free, to the web of SCaD nets below. a SCaD jump is a brush with living, a thrill to digest and relive forever. and there’s more. adventurers with a will get to bungee off the towers, take a mega-swing between them, hit some skin-stinging paintball in the abandoned factory beneath, or climb up and abseil down (even upside down). and finally, the ultimate. Been base-jumping lately? Do it. Contact: Orlando Towers, 071 674 4343, info@orlandotowers.co.za, www.orlandotowers.co.za

Step into the sky It was on a November morning in 1783 that Parisians became the first humans to witness a miracle made real. They saw a balloon, big and bright enough to fill the sky, make two men fly. Today, hot-air ballooning is the pursuit of kings. Some of the world’s finest ballooning can be had among the majestic Drakensberg and rolling, green hills of KwaZulu-Natal. Climb into a wicker basket and rise up to creation’s edge. Hang there like those first two lucky-fish Frenchmen, looking down at all the world below. But don’t stop there. KZN’s aerial playground invites you to take the drift further with a hanglide in the heavens or a microlight adventure. Raise terror levels a notch with a helicopter flip, or turn ballooning’s champagne civilisation all the way over with a skydive. All hail the zorb A zorb is exactly what it should be: a big, transparent, inflated plastic ball that you can climb right into and go rolling down a hill. While zorbs, zorbers and zorbing can be found in every major city, Durban is currently home to South Africa’s zorbing seat. In Cliffdale, adventurers can do just about anything one can with a giant ball-car thing. There’s the tornado ride down a twisting hillside, the kamikaze for full-thrill junkie satisfaction, and the aqua ball for total devolution to your eight-year-old you. Zorbing is simply a big ball of fun. Bring nothing but yourself, strap in, and get on with getting out. Contact: Groovy Balls, 084 330 3112, bookings@groovyballs.co.za www.groovyballs.co.za

Hang it from a tree, roll it down a hill, blow it up till it pops. now put an adult in it and throw him or her into the wild beauty of the Tsitsikamma’s Storms river, and you’ve got a young-at-heart adventure fit for the best of play-play kings. Storms river tubing takes place over a half or full day. Adventurers slip through real mountain river rapids, the deepest of tranquil pools and the wildest views as the crags of Tsitsikamma flow by overhead. Sightings of birds such as the half collard, pied and giant kingfishers, fish eagles and Knysna loeries are commonplace, and jolts of just the right hit of adrenalin are never far away. Guests get to swim in the river’s glorious pools, jump from the looming cliffs in kloofing adventures, and even abseil or boulder. Storms river tubing operates all year round, but is weatherdependent. Contact: Tube ’n Axe, 042 281 1757 info@tubenaxe.co.za, www.blackwatertubing.net

Dude, where’s my kombi? When you’re young and free and have wheels, that’s the time to set off. Keith Bain listened in on how one pair of Born Frees from Jo’burg pulled off their first road trip. He took notes on the bits they remembered.

Sibusiso: So, I told my ma, ‘Ma, don’t worry, we’ll be fine; we’re popping down to the coast for a couple of weeks. I’ll bring back five litres of sea water.’ But that didn’t stop her tears. She told me I was abandoning her at the coldest time of year and who would collect firewood to see her through the winter? That’s when I heard the kombi’s hooter. My ma finished her rant by saying, ‘That Michael has no business driving a second-hand taxi.’ Michael: Sbu’s super-cool, but his mom smaaks me min. She thinks I’m a slapgat whitey, just because I live in Sandton, which she says is soulless. She kicked up a fuss about our road trip, yelling and screaming in Zulu. I could only understand every fourth

word, which was either drugs or alcohol or sex. She still thinks it’s my fault Sbu got wasted on New Year’s Eve. Thing is, he just doesn’t know how to drink. Sbu: Eish. I’m surprised Mike’s rattling metal dinosaur made it out of Jozi. By the time we hit Durban, I was emotionally scarred – in worse shape than the kombi. Mike: I told him the kombi is cool, just a little rusty, but he’s a lank bad passenger. Sbu: Mike’s obviously obsessed with old things, so I was a bit worried when he announced we were staying in reconditioned ‘heritage bungalows’ near Florida Road. I thought people from Sandton only stayed in Umhlanga. But I was wrong. He booked this great

little spot: Concierge Bungalows. Very smart and not too expensive. I wasn’t too sure about the open-plan bathroom with the non-existent bathroom wall, though. I kinda got the feeling the guys at reception thought we were a couple. I mean, the bed’s gigantic and everything – but there’s only one. Mike: After Sbu had spent several hours titivating in the room, he came out dressed like he was hoping to get lucky. I told him no-one in Durbs wears long pants, but as always he ignored my fashion advice. Anyway, I was aching for a drink, so we went to the local temple of craft beer. Sbu: Mike took us to Unity Bar; he said it was the place to hang out. I understood what that meant

from the way he got stuck into the expensive beers with strange names like ‘Cowbell’. He had as many as he could sink before the barman told him to stop hassling the other customers. As for me: chicken-and-prawn curry. Someone had to drive. Mike: I woke up in my boxers and socks, Sbu snoring happily on the other side of the bed. My head hurt, my mouth was bone-dry, and I hadn’t a clue how we got back to the hotel. Like I explained to Sbu, alcohol affects me more at the coast. Sbu: What Mike doesn’t know won’t hurt him. While he was getting wasted on silly-sounding beers, I befriended a few classy ladies. I drove him back to the hotel, got him into bed, and then

hit the town with these girls. They took me to Tokio, this pumping club in Stamford Hill. Mike: Anyway, once I’m awake, I’m awake, so I kicked Sbu in the ribs to get him up. Sbu: Geez, man, Mike needs to slow down. The day had barely begun and he’d dragged us down to the beachfront. My eyes were still closed, and we were ordering coffees and hiring bicycles from Bike & Bean. While we were letting the caffeine sink in, I checked him eyeing out Moses Mabhida Stadium, and then he started hinting that we should do the bungee swing. I just jumped on my bike and set off towards uShaka. My ma would flip if I died at the end of a rubber band.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX? Concierge Bungalows’ restaurant, Freedom Café, spills out of a bright red refurbished shipping container. With pink flamingoes on guard duty.

UNITED WE DOP At Unity Bar, Mike got pumped up on his special beers, while I did my thang with the Durban babes.

Mike: Durban’s beaches were chock full of people checking out the heaving nets filled with sardines. After we’d cycled up and down the Golden Mile, we joined a tour by this crew called Street Scene. They promised to show us the real flavour of the city. When Sthembiso, our guide, mentioned the Bovine Head Market, I got a little nervous. Sbu’s always talking about walkie-talkies and strange animal parts that he eats with his family, but I don’t much like looking at the face of the thing I’m chewing on. Call it a cultural difference, but I’m sorry. Sbu: So we went on this brilliant walk through Warwick Junction, with all of these markets where you can buy

FREE ON THE RANGE Happy cows were everywhere on the Wild Coast. Chilling on the beach, plodding across the hills, wandering between the huts.

flipping anything – even muti made from herbs and animal parts and just about anything under the sun. Seeing cow’s heads being butchered with an axe brought a sudden end to Mike’s smugness. I could see him reeling at the thought of sucking back a little platter of cow cheeks. Mike: Finally, Sthembiso took us somewhere for some proper food: bunny chows. Sbu: That night, Sthembiso suggested we hit this underground-style bar called The Chairman, in the old red-light district at The Point. There were no signs and the place felt like a secret, but it was so cosy and comfortable inside, like lots of lounges done out with old furniture and full of smoking-hot ladies.

YOH! PARADISE It was a mission getting to Bulungula, but well worth the bumpy ride. Magic spilled out as far as the eye could see.

Mike: We had to make an early start for the Wild Coast. I handed him the kombi keys and let him drive. Sbu: I was born to pilot that kombi. No rattling when I’m at the wheel. It was like ripping through a tropical jungle all the way down the South Coast. Mike, fast asleep when he should have been making conversation, left Coldplay on repeat, so I was pretty depressed by the time we hit Qunu, where I stopped to pay respects at Madiba’s grave. Soon after that, we turned towards the coast, and then hit a nightmarish dirt road with no signs at all. Mike: I’d booked us a hut at Bulungula, this awesome backpacker’s at the end of a terrible road. The storm that night was bewildering. After it cleared, though, the sky turned clear and filled

up with a billion stars, many of them racing across the sky. What an epic place. It felt like we were at the end of the world, right on this big, empty beach where a river spilled into the ocean. Sbu: Bulungula Lodge is really an extension of a Xhosa village. The old folks love to sit outside their huts at these makeshift shebeens, passing their tubs of homemade beer around. That was seriously cool. Mike got carried away. He tried to do a little dance for the locals. They pretended not to mind, but made a few comments in Xhosa that would’ve shattered his ego. Mike: We could have stayed there forever. Totally chilled out. We went canoeing, fished with nets, and saw loads of dolphins popping out of the water whenever another swell

Besides, just as we were getting ready to leave, in pulls this Landcruiser with two cute student nurses from England. Mike: Our timing sucked. Sbu: Mike didn’t even ask if I wanted to drive. He took us to Jeffrey’s Bay, foot on the accelerator all the way through the old Transkei. Not sure why. Neither of us even knows the back end of a surfboard from the front. Still, he kept shouting, ‘Surf’s up, dude!’ Geez.

Mike: We spent that night at Island Vibe, a neat, friendly backpacker’s right there on the dunes, at a surf spot known as ‘Kitchen Windows’. It wasn’t just surfers showing off in the breakers – there were dolphins zipping around, too. But we didn’t hang around. Sbu: Mike’s been raving about the Garden Route ever since losing his virginity on the beach at Nature’s Valley. Claims he could hear the stars twinkling. Whatevs! Mike: Sedgefield, just past Knysna, is like the international headquarters for paragliding, and I knew Sbu would get into it if he just gave it a shot. We wanted to be near the beach, so we stayed at Afrovibe, this funky backpacker’s above the Pili Pili Xtreme Sports Centre. Best of all was the bar – basically an extension of the beach. Sbu: Mike kept apologising for the weather, like it was his fault. We went hiking (in the wet) through some awesome forests with massive trees hundreds of years old, and we swam in the vlei and jolled in the sea. Who the hell needs to jump off bridges or going flying off mountain cliffs? Mike: Then, it happened… Sbu: We were devouring pizzas, hiding from the downpour, at this kiff familyowned Italian trattoria called Da Vinci, when they arrived. We both recognised them instantly. The Bulungula nurses. Mike: We invited them to join us and they told us they’d just checked into our backpacker’s. Sbu’s a real charmer – had those ladies eating out of his hand. And, miraculously, they seemed to like me too. Sbu: It was a long night of good food and conversation, and outside, the rain had cleared. There was some serious magic in the air. Mike: Oh, yes … Sbu and I both heard the stars that night.

wiTH SoUTH africa having failed miserably in their attempt to qualify for the 2014 world cup in Brazil, Bafana Bafana fans are left wondering just whom to support. Backing our fellow african sides is definitely the way to go, and Ghana – or BaGhana BaGhana, as they were fondly renamed – would be most people’s first choice, after their heroics in South africa four years ago. However, the Black Stars have had the misfortune of being drawn in the toughest group at the tournament; they will have to battle Germany, portugal and the USa for a place in the knockout stages. They overcame tough group draws in 2006 and 2010, but will have to be even better this year to advance. it’s the same story for cameroon, who have hosts Brazil, croatia and Mexico in their group. The indomitable lions haven’t scaled the same heights at the tournament since becoming the first african side to reach the quarterfinals, in 1990, and it’s going to be quite a task for them to advance this year. cote d’ivoire, on paper, have arguably the strongest squad of any of the african teams, although this is their ‘Golden Generation’s’ last chance to make an impression at a major tournament. fortunately, they have

kulula.com

Travel 29.indd 97

a relatively kind group – colombia, Greece and Japan are teams that the Elephants need not fear, and they should have a good chance of progressing into the knockout stages for the first time. Nigeria, the reigning african champions, have mighty argentina in their group, but their other opponents are Bosnia-Herzegovina and iran. The Super Eagles should have a good chance of progressing, something they haven’t achieved since 1998. finally, algeria have Belgium, russia and South Korea in their pool. The North africans are very much the outsiders, but will be determined to improve on their 2010 showing, when they failed to win any games or even score a goal.

Favourites, outsiders and dark horses Hosts Brazil are considered the favourites because of the massive home support and the fact that, in the past four years, they have managed to assemble a pretty formidable squad. They’ve proven to be strong defensively with players such as dante holding the fort, while the likes of Neymar and oscar possess the attacking flair that is associated with the Seleção.

YES, WE GHANA Ghana carry many of Africa’s hopes on their shoulder this year.

Argentina are also listed as favourites should their neighbours slip up, as the tournament is likely to be won by a South American team. The Albiceleste have been pretty inconsistent over the years, but have one of the best players in the world in one Lionel Messi, who is capable of lighting up the tournament and inspiring his team. Defending champions Spain had a good run during the qualifying stages and are still considered to have an outside chance. They have already had experience of playing against Brazil, in the finals of the FIFA

Confederations Cup last year, and will know what to expect. Germany have not won the World Cup since 1990, but they have come close on a number of occasions since lifting the trophy in Italy, and this could well be their year. They have no shortage of talent, with players such as Phillip Lahm, Sebastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gotze. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal are also regarded as dark horses for the tournament, alongside Uruguay, who finished fourth in the previous World Cup, as well as Belgium, who also have a strong squad for this tournament.

Reliving the memories Before the 1998 World Cup in France, South African football fans were used to the idea of backing another country at the World Cup, but qualifying for back-to-back World Cups in 1998 and 2002 meant that local fans expected South Africa to be part of the tournament. While a lot of South Africans were disappointed with Bafana Bafana’s failure to qualify for the World Cup in 2006, there was still a lot of interest when the tournament kicked off, and it should be the case with this year’s event in Brazil.

WHEEEEEE! Brazil always take time out to have some fun, which is why they are never short of fans.

The memories of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which happened on South African shores four years ago, are still vivid, and that excitement should carry through to this year’s tournament, even though Bafana Bafana are not part of it. As it was before 1998, most South Africans are likely to rally behind African teams as well as Brazil, who will be hosting the event and are also

the most successful country, with five World Cup victories, while others will be backing various European countries.

Samba time There are similarities between South Africa and Brazil in terms of ethnic diversity and socioeconomic challenges. Host cities such as Rio de Janeiro have a mix of luxurious beaches and informal settlements,

which are known as favelas, and the Brazilian lifestyle is quite similar to the South African way of living. The 12 host cities have varying weather conditions, with cities such as Rio and Recife enjoying warm climates between June and July, while the temperature in cities such as Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre can fall below freezing in winter. This is similar to what was experienced during the 2010

JUNE 2014

The opening ceremony of the 1994 World Cup in the USA featured a scene where famous singer Diana Ross had simply to tap the ball into an empty net from the penalty spot … and she duly missed, demonstrating perhaps the most terribly executed kick in the history of football. Only Roberto Baggio’s miss in the penalty shootout in the final against Brazil is more infamous. Basic addition isn’t that difficult … unless your name is Graham Poll and you’re a referee at the 2006 World Cup. During Croatia’s 2-2 draw with Australia, he showed the same player – defender Josip Simunic – three yellow cards before finally sending him off. Goalkeeping errors are generally pretty funny, and England’s Rob Green provided a proper howler in 2010. In a group stage match against the USA in Rustenburg, he somehow allowed a tame, long-range shot from Clint Dempsey to squirm under his body and creep over the line for a goal. The match ended 1-1 and ultimately cost England the top spot in their group. It’s generally frowned upon to defend a free kick by rushing up to the dead ball and kicking it away before your opponents can cross or shoot, but that’s exactly what Zaire defender Mwepu Ilunga did against Brazil in a group-stage match in 1974. He was booked by the referee and later claimed he was trying to force a red card in protest against Zaire’s government. Either way, it was a comedy classic. Football players generally like to think of themselves as being versatile – having multiple skills. Jimmy Greaves demonstrated this to perfection in 1962 when, during England’s match against eventual winners Brazil, he took to his hands and knees in a successful effort to detain a stray dog that had wandered onto the pitch. The legendary Brazilian attacker Garrincha was apparently so amused by the incident that he adopted the dog as a pet. Football players are often accused of play acting and Brazil’s Rivaldo took it to a whole new level in the 2002 World Cup against Turkey. Hakan Unsal kicked the ball towards Rivaldo at the corner flag and it struck the Brazilian on the leg. He collapsed, holding his face as if he had been sucker-punched, and his amateur dramatics succeeded in getting the Turkish defender sent off.

I DID WHAT? Italy’s Roberto Baggio misses his spot kick in 1994, handing Brazil the title.

It also happens to be the first in southern africa, joining nairobi, accra and Cairo on the continent. dinika and her friend Gareth Pearson started the Cape Town Hub after a friend and member of the Paris Hub, introduced Gareth to the concept. sandbox Cape Town currently has 14 members, including fine artists, a documentary filmmaker, a published chef, a game developer and an educator. ‘This first class of sandboxers was recruited and invited to apply through various means,’ explains dinika, ‘from scouring the media for eligible applicants to approaching leaders in different industries and organisations for personal recommendations. The social network certainly helped to amplify this search, helping us to find applicants that we, as ambassadors, probably also would not have met otherwise.’ ‘What we’ve discovered in our brief time as the ambassadors of the first hub in southern africa is that sandbox is not another network built on business cards, or a soapbox set up for more talk. It is a global family interested in learning, building and growing together by seeing the world together, taking risks together, and inspiring each other to achieve more. We want to share that, starting by sowing the seeds of unlikely innovation. ‘We are firm advocates of the power of curiosity and diversity combined to transform, to challenge and to create. but, we’ve also sensed that this

Young, ambitious, hard-working people get from Sandbox what young, ambitious, hard-working people put into Sandbox: shared experiences, advice, deep friendships and the most precious resource in this digital age: attention. – Dinika Govender, Sandbox Cape Town Hub ambassador power is not nearly as democratised as it should be in a society that tends to pigeonhole people according to professional, academic and social status. Unsurprisingly, there’s keen interest in Sandbox from young Jo’burgers. ‘A Sandbox Johannesburg Hub is

something we’re eager to help kickstart. We think there’s a lot of synergy to be created from the sibling rivalry that Capetonians and Jo’burgers so often build up,’ says Dinika.

Taking South Africa’s young minds forward The world is in a state of rapid change, and there’s a great opportunity for young South Africans to play a part in developing a better future. ‘The foundations we were raised on are buckling under greed and corruption; the social divisions we’re only beginning to heal are being strained by growing digital divides; and consumption-driven definitions of happiness are not really leading to more happiness, for anyone. So while many are focused on trying to fix broken systems, there’s a generation of creative thinkers – of Sandboxers – busy deconstructing, innovating and inventing with today’s resources and global playing field,’ says Dinika. ‘South African youth have an incredible, but easily overlooked, resilience that came with growing up in this country’s shift from apartheid to a constitutional democracy, from isolation to internationalism. The result is an existence defined by transition. South African youth are built for it – and in it lies an incredible opportunity to remake the rules: to be fiercely, creatively and competitively present in building global citizenship, for more and more South Africans. Dave Fall test-drives three of the coolest ways to get around on two wheels.

Let’s be honest, every youngster needs transport of one kind or another once they’ve reached an age where they can legally get their own ‘wheels’. Cars will always remain expensive to buy and maintain, and the exorbitant running costs (such as spiralling petrol prices) are no joke. but there’s hope in the form of the humble scooter. today they are totally reliable, smart, ultra-cheap to run, offer maximum levels of independence and, above all, are perpetually cool, so there’s no need be embarrassed arriving at your destination by shank’s pony or, God forbid, being dropped off by your parents. on the other hand, you might simply be a frustrated commuter who never wants to hear the word ‘gridlock’ ever again, and would love to be able to park safely just about anywhere without the need to feed a parking meter or trouble a well-meaning car guard – I know I do.

kulula.com

Cars 29.indd 111

there are many choices when it comes to scooters, so to make things a little easier, we’re taking a look at three of the current options in the south African market: entry-level models such as those in the big boy range; the evergreen Vespa; and an all-new arrival in the exciting world of electric-powered scooters.

eWizz ‘Ride electric, drive the future’ is the corporate slogan of the eWizz electric Company, headed up by Andy le May in Cape town. With four ‘green’ models available now, and more to come, he may have a point. Prices start at R24 500 for the entry-level spark version, which offers a potential range of 45-50km per charge. silent, eerie transport of this kind for the masses could well be the future – it certainly is in China, with 125 million lowpowered electric vehicles already on their roads. there’s no fuel bill, and there are no parts to wear out on the spark, Volt,

thunder and Lightning models (except tyres and brake pads, that is). there’s no clutch, gears, carburettor or conventional engine innards or exhaust system, while regenerative braking puts plenty of charge back in the battery (lithium ion battery warranted for 50 000km), similar to Formula one KeRs (kinetic energy recovery system) technology. Full battery power is easily restored to the eWizz by simply plugging it into a household wall socket via a conventional three-pin plug: cost estimated at R4 per charge – so dad shouldn’t get grumpy. PASTEL PRINCESS The Vespa is iconic. This colour? We’re not so sure.

WHO YOU CALLIN’ BOY? Big Boy scooters are big more in terms of value than stature.

Vespa While there are many different brands of conventional scooters to choose from, there’s really only one out there if you want the real McCoy. First manufactured in Italy in 1946, the Vespa, like all good things in life, doesn’t come cheap, but it’s well-made. It wasn’t the first scooter ever produced (the Americans probably got there first over a century ago, with a machine that was little more than a motorised bicycle), but the Italian Vespa was the first designed effectively to be a scooter. Check out www.vespa.co.za for more info.

Big Boy There’s a nice range of 125cc-300cc scooters on offer, all Chinese-sourced (and there’s nothing wrong with that). With sticker prices starting at R8 999, they are cost effective and cool to ride – especially something from the Revival range. There are more than 80 dealerships to be found up and down the country, and they’ll also happily kit you up and train you to ride properly. Bear in mind that strict servicing intervals need to be observed. Check out www.bigboyscooters.co.za for more info.

Ferrari LaFerrari embargo

Investment bonus

In an absurd scenario, Ferrari threatened to fine journalists up to $70 000 for releasing reviews of the new Ferrari LaFerrari early. Journalists were forced to sign the document saying their reviews from the launch event wouldn’t go live before a set date. Goodness knows what the thinking behind this was…

It’s known that desirable sports cars generally appreciate in value over time. A prime example of this is the iconic McLaren F1. One of these ultra-rare exotics was recently sold for almost R109-million in May 2014. Not a bad investment, considering these cars were valued around the R88-million mark in 2013.

JUNE 2014

Everyone knows Porsche is a sports-car manufacturer, and the 911 has been an all-time classic for the brand. When the announcement came many years back that Porsche would be creating an SUV, there was a massive outcry. Who would buy a Porsche SUV, as it looks hideous? Clearly many people ignored the looks, as the Cayenne is one of its most popular models.

1

3

5

I haven’t driven this yet, but what exactly is the point of the BMW X4? There’s already an X1 and X3, which is loved by estate agents and moms on the school run, and there’s the brilliant X5, which everyone likes. The X6 is a strangely successful offroad four-door coupe, so where exactly does this fit in? It’ll be arriving in South Africa soon enough, so you can make your own mind up.

RENAULT FLUENCE

Renault does hot hatches and small stylish city cars really well, so why does it have to interfere in the commuter sedan market? Everything would be okay if the Fluence was really good, but in truth it’s just adequate. In terms of sales, the Toyota Corolla outsells it around 50 to one.

AUDI A3 SEDAN

2

4

R

Yes, it’s one of the finest Audi products to emerge over the past year or so, but where does it fit in? The Audi A3 was always regarded as a hatchback, while the A4 was the sedan. Don’t get me started on the Audi A5 Sportback either, which is marketed as a four-door coupé… Confused? Don’t worry, I am too.

MINI COUNTRYMAN

MINIs are generally funky and stylish fashionmobiles, but that’s not a license to create a four-wheel drive, two-ton, four-door SUV. The MINI Countryman is a bloated and overweight example of a brand going too far. The problem is it’s quite nice to drive and surprisingly spacious, plus every Countryman owner I’ve come across is quite smitten with it. kulula.com

champion She’s just started school and barely reaches the average adult’s waist, but eight-year-old superhero Alyssa Carter has already done more for South Africa’s conservation efforts than most people five times her age, writes an impressed Dale Hes. ALYSSA CARTER, A pocket-rocket grade two pupil from Jo’burg, has raised a whopping R20 000 in just over a year, and is well on her way to achieving her dream of buying a trained sniffer dog to assist in the war against rhino poaching. ‘After we learnt about endangered animals at school and I heard about the rhinos being killed, I actually cried. They are such beautiful animals and I just don’t want them to be killed,’ Alyssa says about her favourite animal.

gogreen29 1.indd 116

While many of us react to rhino poaching with nothing more than horrified gasps and a derisive shake of the head, the precocious Alyssa purposefully set out to raise money for the SANParks Honorary Rangers, the preferred channel for counter-poaching operations in Kruger. With a helping hand from her parents, Alyssa formed her own mini-NGO called Alyssa’s Save the Rhinos, and started making and selling chocolates and stickers in May 2013.

Each chocolate has a hand-drawn picture of a rhino created by Alyssa. She sells her sweets at market days, church and at school every Friday for R10 each, and is often invited to other schools to share her cause. This year, she added biscuits fashioned into the shape of rhinos to her life-saving product range. Buying and taking care of a sniffer dog costs in the region of R100 000 – the goal on which Alyssa has set

her sights. ‘I love dogs and know that they help to stop the poaching,’ she shyly explains. ‘I will try to sell lots of chocolates so I can help to save the rhinos and see them in the wild. If lots of people buy chocolates, we can all help to save the rhinos by getting a dog. Then I can give the dog a name, and go there to visit too.’ This little eco-warrior has become somewhat sought-after by the media, having already been a guest on eNCA, Talk Radio 702, Cape Talk and Radio Today. Alyssa’s father, Brian, says he has been astounded by the passionate and enterprising character of his daughter. ‘We are exceptionally proud of her,’ he says. ‘This was all her own idea. She has done everything virtually by herself, and all we’ve done is to support her where she needs it.’ In 2013, Alyssa became the youngest ever winner of a prestigious SANParks Kudu Award for Corporate Contribution to Conservation, and has also been named a SANParks Rhino Champion.

‘Her awards are in recognition of her entrepreneurial spirit and acknowledging that the fight against rhino poaching requires funding,’ says Janssen Davies, national chairperson of the SANParks Honorary Rangers, an organisation of 1 200 volunteer members, which has contributed more than R17-million in counter-poaching support over the past four years. ‘What she is doing is a triumph for her generation and we are proud to have her as a supporter,’ says Janssen. The funds raised have already been deposited into an account specifically earmarked for Alyssa’s cause. Brian is helping his little girl to register Alyssa’s Save the Rhinos as a nonprofit organisation, and after reaching the first target of buying the sniffer hound, Alyssa aims to continue with further fundraising projects. To donate to Alyssa’s Save the Rhinos campaign, visit www.savetherhinos.co.za or www.sanparksvolunteers.org, or call Brian Carter on 082 855 3281.

Get a head start in your career According to psychologist and author Meg Jay, 30 is not the new 20. Forget about having an identity crisis and lounging around your parents’ house, she says in her book Defining

Decade: How to Make the Most of Your Twenties. It’s time to get off your butt and take yourself seriously. Responsibility makes you happier Many 20-somethings fear being tied down to a nine-to-five job, but Meg says this is nonsense. Having a job makes you happier and gives you a sense of purpose, she believes. She also cautions that not making a choice is a choice: ‘These 20-somethings think they are keeping their options open [by not getting a job], but they are actually closing doors.’ Get the best job you can It’s going to take a while to get good at your profession (10 000 hours or five years, to be exact), says Meg, so get the best job you can early on. That way your career will advance more quickly. And cut yourself a bit of slack when you’re feeling nervous on the job. Meg says 20-somethings are more sensitive to criticism because their brains’ frontal lobes, which help to

override emotion with reason, are still developing. So take a step back and get some perspective, she urges. Just because your boss is angry with you, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be fired.

It’s going to take a while to get good at your profession (10 000 hours or five years, to be exact), so get the best job you can early on

Getting a student loan

Quality education doesn’t come cheap, so if your parents haven’t saved up for your degree, you may need to apply for a student loan. What do you need to be eligible? ‘Student loans are granted in the name of the person responsible for paying the account,’ says Pieter du Toit, CEO of FNB Loans. This person must be an SA resident aged 18 to 65, be full-time employed for the past year, earn a regular minimum salary of R6 000 a month and have an existing credit history. How much can I get? Student loans typically range from R4 000 to R150 000, but you’ll need to give the lending institution a breakdown of the money you’ve spent, as well as proof of registration every year. ‘The loan is intended to cover the study fees, campus accommodation and textbooks,’ says Du Toit, and in some cases the cost of a laptop or tablet as well. How will I repay the loan? ‘While the student is studying, the bank requires that only the interest, fees and charges are repaid until graduation,’ explains Du Toit. Six months thereafter, you’ll need to start chipping away at the capital itself, which will take 60 months or five years. ‘Customers can make additional repayments at any time or settle the loan early without any penalties,’ adds Du Toit. Other lenders, such as Eduloan, require you to pay back the loan via debit order while you’re studying. This is a good option if you’re working and studying at the same time, because it means you won’t be saddled with paying off debt once you’ve finished your degree.

Driven to succeed Coffee enthusiast, a former Mr South Africa finalist, a nuts-and-bolts manager, a shy socialite – there are many ways of looking at Dale Horne, operational director of Durban-based firm Whistle Blowers. Katherine Graham caught up with him.

What does your job involve? I interact daily with my clients and staff to ensure we are providing the best-quality service in our field. Companies that subscribe to Whistle Blowers give their employees the opportunity to ‘blow the whistle’ on fraud, criminal activity and other irregularities in the workplace. How did you get to where you are today? I was fortunate enough to grow up in a sporting and business environment, which I guess taught me leadership and teamwork. I knew what line of work I wanted to get involved in, and would like to think that hard work and a strong work ethic helped me to get to where I am today. What makes you tick? A challenge. Let’s also not forget when the Sharks or Springboks run onto the field! Where is your favourite coffee spot? I love my coffee! The best place to get my caffeine fix would have to be Tasha’s in Morningside, Jo’burg. Are you an early bird or a night owl? A bit of both, I think. My day always starts off relatively early. However, I’m always up for a social dinner or night out. Describe a typical working day. This is one of the things I love most about what I do. There is no such thing as a typical day at work. The one constant is that it always starts off in the gym at 6am. Your ultimate holiday destination? Anywhere that provides a beach and good fishing.

Child’s play (or not) Kids have a tough deal. They have to go to school, everything fun is kept out of their reach and, quite frequently in fact, they are beset with lurgies so gruesome it seems miraculous that anyone survives beyond childhood. Here are some of the most common childhood diseases: Chicken pox Symptoms: Yucky, itchy red rash/ blisters and mild flu-like symptoms. Treatment: It can’t be cured, so you’re

going to have to wait this one out. Avoid scratching and treat symptoms with painkillers and calamine lotion. Whooping cough Symptoms: Yucky coughing fits with wheezing and even vomiting, snottiness (not the bratty variety) and fever. Symptoms are often worse at night. Treatment: Antibiotics. Hand, foot and mouth disease (and you thought this one was just for livestock)

Symptoms: Yucky spots and blisters, typically on the hands, feet and mouth, as well as a fever and sore throat. Treatment: This usually clears up on its own, so just treat symptomatically. How old is your heart anyway? You may feel young at heart, but an unhealthy lifestyle could mean that your poor ol’ ticker is practically ageing in dog years. The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa and the World Heart Federation’s Heart Age Test, which can be found at www.heartage.co.za, is calculated using validated scientific research from the Framingham Heart Study in Boston. It’s as simple as plugging in some personal info, including your height and weight, whether you smoke and your actual age (not your deepest, darkest secrets), and this nifty test will tell you if your heart is ticking along nicely or if it’s years ahead of its time, in the worst way possible. Their mission is to motivate 100 million people worldwide to take the Heart Age test by 2020, and to help them to adopt healthier diets and lifestyles.

17 Percentage of South African children under the age of nine who are obese. Next time your kids complain about mowing the lawn, cleaning the pool or some other physical chore, just remind them you’re only making them do it because you love them. Clever, nê?

Get your heart pumping; it is a muscle, after all Laughter keeps you young. No, really Corny as it sounds, the secret to beating age-related memory loss may be no more difficult than enjoying a good chuckle. The stress hormone cortisol not only makes you feel about 100 years older than you are, but it can contribute to the problems that plague us as we get older, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. It can damage neurons in the brain, and negatively affect memory and learning. Researchers at Loma Linda University decided to put the theory that ‘laughter is the best medicine’ to the test by seeing if it can lessen the harmful effects of cortisol. They found that elderly people who watched a 20-minute laughter-inducing video had lower cortisol concentrations and performed better on a memory assessment test than those who hadn’t been placed in the guffawing group. So go on and have a giggle – it really will do you good.

36 Percentage of children in a major study living with a step-parent or single parent who report that they are ‘happy all the time’. The remarkable thing? Children living with both biological parents had exactly the same happiness levels, indicating that kids living with one parent are as happy as those with two.

Monday and Tuesday The days on which, according to data analysed between 2005 and 2012, the greatest number of healthrelated Google searches – for example, ‘healthy diet’ – occur. Unsurprisingly perhaps, Saturdays yielded the lowest average.

Mind your heart Want to do your bit for your brain function in later life? Well, then be sure to take care of your heart while you’re still young. Studies have found that young adults with healthy blood pressure – that’s 120/80 or less – go on to have better cognitive skills in midlife than their peers with higher blood pressure. The researchers from the University of California insist that this is just more evidence that we start mapping out our future health even earlier than we initially realised, meaning it’s never too soon to adopt good habits. Keep your blood-pressure levels in check by ensuring that you: Remain within a healthy weight range; Exercise regularly (that’s right, get your heart pumping; it is a muscle, after all) – experts recommend at least 150 minutes of exercise (that’s five sessions of half an hour each) per week; Limit your sodium (salt) intake by avoiding processed foods and increasing your intake of fresh fruits and veggies; Avoid or quit smoking; and Limit or cut down on your alcohol intake.

No country for old men Damn. I swore the day would never come. Like a retired cowboy wielding a flaccid lasso, I’ve started flinging my age around like a lame excuse. whether it’s sleeping late, getting to bed early, anti-social mumblings, unapologetic grumpiness, snubbing fashion, ignoring trends, or ranting about the latest social media ‘innovation’, I regularly catch myself pulling the age card. It’s slightly irresistible, because I’ve realised that when you tell people you’re getting old, they immediately reassure you that it’s not true, and that satisfies a pang of longing for the old days. ‘sorry, man, I just can’t party like I used to – I’m getting old, you know?’ ‘what? never! You’re still young; you just have a lot on your plate these days.’ In one sense, it’s a valid argument. I do have my hands full. mostly it’s just keeping up with all of these modern marvels, a ceaseless avalanche of high-tech innovations designed to make life easier, faster, more enjoyable. supposedly keeping us connected. I’m endlessly navigating a non-stop info-stream as my cellphone beeps with the arrival of messages and emails and reminders. mostly it’s spam advertising nonsense I don’t have the energy for. I’m getting old, remember? Tell someone who cares. while in my optimistic heart I’m eternally 22, I can’t deny some longing for the ‘good old days’. I remember

life before we relied on smartphones for everything. when you had to be home to take a phone call. and when you made plans to meet friends, you showed up on time because you couldn’t blithely whatsapp to say you’re running late. Growing up, in fact, I recall little of electronic gadgets. I remember playing in the ocean, not surfing the Internet. my only possession requiring an electrical socket was a turntable, and buying an album back in the eighties was some kind of emotional ritual. You handled records carefully, because the slightest scratch made a big difference. You didn’t leave vinyl lying around; you looked after those babies. You kept them in their sleeves, made sure they were dust-free. I realise I’m lucky to have lived through an era of momentous change. To see records evolve into digital files, dusty books transformed into electronic tablets, and seats on a plane bookable at the click of a button. But there’s a price to pay. nowadays, a song downloads in seconds, and after a week in my iTunes library, it’s lost in cyber-chaos. so much

these days seems disposable and quickly forgotten. which is possibly a good thing, because one hideous side-effect of ageing is the undeniable loss of memory. Perhaps that’s why there are so many places online for people to spill their hearts these days – on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and in obscene videos all over the Internet. everyone’s busy cataloguing their existence, making the smallest details of their lives part of a virtual museum. Too bad, though. I always thought the real world was a lot more fun. and accessing it doesn’t require a password involving a mix of letters, numbers and special characters. nor does the real world require a hashtag, right?
