Through Piccolo Spoleto, the festival experience is readily available to everyone, from return attendees to a child first discovering the arts . ABOUT JOHN CHITWOOD, 2017 PICCOLO SPOLETO POSTER ARTIST John Chitwood is a Charleston native – having grown up in West Ashley with his parents and two older sisters. He demonstrated artistic ability at an early age, often receiving honors in area art shows for his wildlife drawings. Always supported by his family, John has forged a life in Charleston as a graphic artist and member of the creative community. His hobbies include photography, woodworking, and travel. John married his wife Debbie in 2002. Exactly two years later, on their anniversary, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter Katie. Together, they enjoy spending time at Edisto, and traveling with friends. John opened Renaissart Graphic Design in 2000 in a space on upper King Street. Sharing the studio with an architect and a photographer actually inspired the company name. It was truly a Renaissance environment. Renaissart Design has recently relocated to Mt. ABOUT THE FESTIVAL The Piccolo Spoleto Festival annually presents a varied program that includes visual arts exhibitions, performances of classical music, jazz, dance, theater, and choral music, as well as cultural events and community celebrations, poetry readings, children’s activities, craft shows, and film screenings. Piccolo Spoleto prioritizes accessibility for both artists and performers, presenting professional work of the highest standard, while ensuring that nearly half of Piccolo’s events are admission-free, with the balance offered at affordable ticket prices. Piccolo Spoleto was launched in 1979 by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, which continues to work closely with an engaged group of volunteers from the Charleston arts community. The working group of arts professionals who serve as volunteer program coordinators for the Festival now numbers nearly forty, with each specializing in a particular discipline, genre, or period. These arts professionals and scholars devote significant time, energy, and expertise to help curate and plan the various series and presentations that comprise the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Their input and guidance is essential to framing this comprehensive multi-disciplinary arts festival program, which is produced and presented by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs. Thrilling audiences since 1974, The Seed & Feed Marching Abominable is Atlanta’s wildest community band. Explosive sound and colorful street theater electrify the audiences of this all-volunteer organization. The performers are famous for their highenergy music and fancifully costumed players. Piccolo Spoleto will host this group at two memorable performances at the US Custom House, in addition to their early afternoon performance at Family Day at Marion Square (see above). One thing that has remained consistent over almost forty years of Piccolo Spoleto is the Festival’s ability to seize every opportunity, while celebrating the spontaneous and the unexpected. The arts reside in every corner of Charleston, and part of Piccolo’s magic is its improbable knack in drawing out these hidden gems, new discoveries, and exceptional settings. Throughout the run of the Festival, Piccolo Spoleto will be working to extend the scope of its artistic and cultural offering, partnering with local neighborhood groups and the Charleston Parks Conservancy to create additional special performances and arts events throughout Charleston. Some of these events are listed below, and in the balance of this program guide; others are still taking shape and will be announced in the days immediately prior to the start of the Festival. Tyler Canonico earned a Master of Music in Organ Performance from the University of Alabama. He is currently organist and Assistant Director of Music at Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa, and in July, he will assume the position of Minister of Music and organist at Market Square Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg, PA. The ensemble presents The Last Great Impressionist, focused on the music of Maurice Duruflé. The program will include his suite: Prélude, Sicilienne, Toccata (Op. 5), Prélude et Fugue sur le nom d’Alain (Op. 7), Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens (Op. 10), and Fugue sur le theme du Carillon des Heures de la Cathédrale de Soissons (Op. 12). Acclaimed pianist, Dr. Charles Fugo, professor of piano from the University of South Carolina, will perform a solo recital including music of Schubert, Brahms and Chopin. Dr. Fugo received his Master of Music and Doctor of Music in Performance from Indiana University. The recipient of the 2008 Cantey Outstanding Faculty Award given by the School of Music, he was also a staff member of the Anderson (SC) Piano Performance Camp and the summer honors program of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, serving in the latter capacity for 13 years.

Alan Michael Parker
Poet, squeaky wheel, and raconteur, Alan Michael Parker is the author or editor of sixteen books, including eight collections of poems. Dameron is the author of Weary Kingdom (University of South Carolina Press, 2017) and her debut collection How God Ends Us (University of South Carolina Press, 2009), which was selected by Elizabeth Alexander for the 2008 South Carolina Poetry Book Prize. DéLana holds an MFA in Poetry from New York University where she was a Goldwater Hospital Writer’s workshop fellow. She currently resides in Brooklyn.

Ginger Murchison
Ginger Murchison will read from a scrap of linen, a bone (Press 53, 2016), honored by the endorsements of David Baker, Thomas Lux, and Eleanor Wilner and further honored by Garrison Keillor as well as by Ted Kooser. Whatever else it is, a scrap of linen, a bone is both dedicated to and a celebration of the craft of poetry. Twice a Pushcart nominee and a graduate of Warren Wilson’s MFA Program for Writers, Murchison has poems in Atlanta Review, The Chattahoochee Review, Horticulture, Terminus Magazine, and Poetry Kanto as well as several anthologies. Her first chapbook, Out Here, was published by Jeanne Duval Editions in 2008.

Benjamin Brandenburg is a former Columbia University graduate student and current bookstore clerk living in Charleston. His stories are sometimes published online, most recently at Hobart and Monkeybicycle.
Cinelle Barnes writes memoirs and
personal essays on trauma, growing up in Manila, Philippines, and being a mother and immigrant in America. In 2014, she was nominated for the AWP Journal Intro Award for Creative Non-Fiction. She has an MFA from Converse College and teaches writing workshops throughout the year, including Poses and Prose, a yoga + writing workshop. Her debut memoir, Monsoon Mansion (Little A Publishing, 2018), is set for an upcoming release.
Aaron Wood was born in Raleigh, NC. He and his wife moved to Charleston in 2013 to escape the winters of Appalachia. His fiction has been published in Charleston City Paper. A sous chef for a local caterer, when he’s not working on a collection of short stories, he spends time with his wife and dog or fishing the local waters.

2017 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition
The annual juried art exhibition highlights the recent work of artists across South Carolina featuring painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and photography. Artworks receiving prizes are presented alongside a limited selection of pieces identified by the juror as meriting display. This year’s juror is Charleston artist Becca Barnet, whose precision and passion for replicating textures and preserving animals has helped her create an array of museum displays including creating work for the American Museum of Natural History, the South Carolina Aquarium, and the Charleston Museum.
