What our fans are saying... How do you avoid Holiday Weight Gain?
health+fitness | December 2011
Reader SnapShot:

Amy Rice By ignoring all national holidays...except my birthday. Margot McNeeley We have a “no weight gain” contest at my gym, InBalance. Weigh in before the holidays, weigh after holidays. If no weight was gained, you get back your $20 you put in plus a percentage of the money from the people who gained. Tim Brennan The Memphis area has unofficial training events that are a tradition. For example, the Parkway to Parkway run (15-ish miles) at 1pm on Christmas Eve and the New Year’s Eve run at Shelby farms (11 miles). Kevin Leathers No secret formula. The same way every month: eat less, exercise more.
Memphis Rugby Club “The Flamingos” won the South Championship which earned them entry in the National Division II Women’s Rugby Championship Tournament held in Virginia Beach, VA. They finished 7th overall. Spring season starts in January. For more information go to www.memphiswomensrugby.com
Janis Naramore Stewart The way to avoid holiday weight gain is to keep exercising daily even though life is hectic. When you sit down to eat your Christmas meal, wear snug pants not sweat pants. That way you won’t go for that second helping. Eat only the “special” food that is only served for that holiday. For example, pass up the mashed potatoes (we eat them all year), and eat some of the dressing. Most important, do not forego breakfast. You don’t want to come to the table starving. Write a comment...you might see it in the next issue!

Zumbathons®: Shaking It for a Cause By now you’ve surely heard of Zumba®, the Latin dance-inspired workout that has helped 12 million people around the world stay active and fit simply by dancing and having fun. You may even be a Zumba regular yourself. If so, you’ve probably experienced that feeling of surprise when the hour is up — when you’ve had so much fun, you can’t believe you’ve been exercising for an hour! But have you ever heard of a Zumbathon, a two-hour Zumba party benefiting a charity? Participants make a standard donation at the door, which is typically comparable to what you’d normally pay to attend any Zumba class. Here’s the difference: at a Zumbathon, your participation fee buys you up to 15 different instructors instead of just one instructor. Each instructor teaches a few songs and then makes way for the next one. Because of this
exposure to many different teachers, a Zumbathon is perfect for both novices and old pros. Every Zumba instructor has a different style of teaching and dancing, so while you may get frustrated in one teacher’s class, you may really enjoy learning from another. A Zumbathon gives you the experience of all the different styles, so you can make a well-informed choice about whose class you might want to attend regularly. Most Zumbathons also offer free snacks and different vendor tables for shopping and browsing. There are often raffles with great prizes available, with all proceeds benefiting the chosen charity. Think of it like a charity 5K, but with dancing instead. At one upcoming Zumbathon, the best Zumba talent in the city will come together to benefit the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby
County, which rescues and rehabilitates injured and abused animals. Zumba for a Paws will take place Saturday, Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at Mullins United Methodist Church at 4 N. Mendenhall Road in the gymnasium. This Zumbathon will feature many different Zumba instructors—including Kimberly Hawkins, Deontario “Deejay” James, and more. Raffle prizes, healthy snacks, vendors and adoptable pets will also be on hand, plus a fun halftime performance by a talented Humane Society dog! A $10 donation gets you in the door at Zumba for a Paws, and raffle tickets start at just $1. Raffle prizes are being provided by The Wine Market, Hollywood Feed, Melanie’s Hallmark, Knick Knack Patty Whack Pet Services, the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County, Arbonne, Advocare and more.
health+fitness | December 2011
There’s one more way participants can help raise money for the Humane Society with Zumba for a Paws—get your family and friends to sponsor you for each minute of Zumba you do! You’ll be sweating for 90 minutes of Zumba, so if your friend gives 10 cents for each minute, she’ll have donated $9. If your boss gives 50 cents for each minute, he’ll have donated $45. And so on.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Competitor Group Launch Country Music Marathon Collaboration St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital announced as title partner for Country Music Marathon St. Jude Heroes becomes official charity training program for Tennessee’s largest running event More than 30,000 runners expected for Nashville’s 13th annual race on Saturday, April 28, 2012 Nashville, Tenn. – October 7, 2011 – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other deadly childhood diseases, and Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI), organizers of the Country Music Marathon, today announced a new title partnership as the official benefiting charity of the Country Music Marathon. The 2012 event will be rebranded as the St. Jude Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon presented by Nissan and will take place Saturday, April 28.
health+fitness | December 2011
“The St. Jude Country Music Marathon and 1/2 Marathon is the perfect match for St Jude’s rich history with the country music industry and our St. Jude Heroes program,” said Richard Shadyac Jr., CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising organization of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “The event is truly a marriage of fitness enthusiasts and country fans alike nationwide who want to do something meaningful in the fight against childhood cancer and other deadly diseases.”
10
Among the 30,000 runners and walkers who annually participate in Nashville’s 26.2-mile block party will be members of the St. Jude Heroes team who are Running For a Reason®, to support and save the lives of children as they go through some of the toughest times of their lives. Over the past 12 years, the St. Jude Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon has established itself as a Nashville institution, now bringing more than 30,000 runners to a city long known for its musical genius. Runners enjoy many of Nashville’s most historic sites like the Parthenon, worldrenowned Music Row and an expansive finish line festival outside the Tennessee Titan’s home, LP Field, located along the Cumberland River. “While I believe each and every event Competitor Group organizes is spectacular, the St. Jude Country Music Marathon is my
personal favorite,” said Tracy Sundlun, Senior Vice-President of CGI and a founder of the Nashville race. “We are excited to launch a new era of the marathon by partnering with St. Jude and their incredible national network of supporters and country music radio stations, which will take the promotion of this event and the City of Nashville to a whole new level, bringing many more participants and visitors to experience this great city on the last Saturday of each April.” Over its 12-year history, charity partners have raised more than $22.3 million through the Country Music Marathon, which has become one of the largest and most successful fundraising platforms in the state of Tennessee. For more information, or to register for the event, please visit Competitor.com. About St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering research and treatment of children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. World Class: The Opening of Tobey Skate Park For years Memphis skateboarders had to search for a place to ride. While skate parks popped up in other Mid-South cities (like Oxford and Little Rock), Memphis skaters watched and waited. Skaters took trips to other cities for the chance to ride public skate parks while backyard ramps, do-it-yourself spots and street skating around local businesses kept the scene alive for those who refused to give up.
There is one non-skater everyone mentions in getting this park accomplished. Mayor A.C. Wharton played a pivotal role in finally setting a timeline for the park to happen after it seemed it would never go beyond ideas and come to fruition. Wharton made appearances at both the ground breaking ceremony (where he picked up a shovel to signify the construction’s beginning) and at the grand opening ceremony where he spoke to the hundreds in attendance.
Finally, thanks to four years of hard work by skateboarding advocate Aaron Shafer and others, the wait is over for Memphis skaters. Shafer had a vision of an improved Memphis where the ever-growing community of skaters could have a safe place to gather together in the heart of the city. He wanted a park where beginners could learn while still offering advanced terrain for experienced riders.
At the opening ceremony Shafer urged parents and older skaters to teach the youth of our community to skate. As a father with two children who skate, Shafer knows skateboarding can be a great bonding activity, offering both a physical outlet and an opportunity for young people to set goals. What could be better than having a parent who joins in the sport and has goals of his own? Shafer also mentioned mentoring programs, and even plans to offer beginners classes at the park.
The skate park at Tobey Park offers just that. The 10,000 square foot park, which officially opened on Wednesday, November 9th, has a “micro mini” 1 ½ foot tall half pipe for children and beginners, while advanced skaters get to enjoy a bowl (which reaches eight feet at its highest point) and a snake run christened the “Shafe Run” by thankful skaters of the city.
health+fitness | December 2011
Local skaters even helped design the park. Longtime Memphis skater and ramp design/construction aficionado Mike Lasiter helped Shafer redesign the “Shafe Run” after visiting the Venice, California public skate park. Lasiter and Shafer saw where improvements could be made, drew up plans, and made them happen.
12
Skateboarders are a close-knit group. In the words of elder “skatesman” Edward Pidgeon, “It’s all about the tribe.” Memphis always lacked a public location where the community, young and old, could come together. But now, skateboarders finally have it. And as a skater who has traveled the country to skate different parks, I can say it’s a wonderful thing to finally have a park to call home. Tobey Park is located at 150 S Flicker Steet. Helmets and full pads are required for children under 12. Helmets are required for everyone. By David Thornton

FOOD MOOD BOOSTERS
Don’t let the holiday blues get you down. Try these healthy alternatives to fight depression, stress and irritability without a prescription. Oatmeal:
Oatmeal may help if you find yourself feeling irritable and cranky. It’s rich in soluble fiber, which helps smooth out blood sugar levels by slowing the absorption of sugar into the blood. Oatmeal is also a great food to help you stick with your diet plan, because the soluble fiber in oatmeal forms a gel that slows the emptying of your stomach so you don’t feel hungry quickly. Other foods high in soluble fiber include beans, peas, barley, citrus fruits, strawberries and apples.
Walnuts:
Walnuts have long been thought of as a “brain food” because of their wrinkled, bi-lobed (brainlike) appearance. But now we know that walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, a type of fat needed for brain cells and mood-lifting neurotransmitters to function properly and possibly help with depression. Other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, sardines, flaxseeds and omega-3 fortified eggs.
Tea:
Although caffeine has been shown to lead to a more positive mood and improved performance, it’s a fine line. Too much caffeine can make you dependent or bring on headaches, while also making you nervous, irritable and hypersensitive.
Salmon:
In the past few years, research has suggested that vitamin D may increase the levels of serotonin, one of the key neurotransmitters influencing our mood. It may also help relieve mood disorders. We get vitamin D mainly through exposure to sunlight and in lesser amounts, through food. But a recent study found that exposure to sunlight during the months of November through February does not produce any significant amounts of vitamin D in skin. Other foods high in vitamin D are fortified milk and fortified soymilk.
health+fitness | December 2011
Lentils:
16
Source: altmedicine.about.com
A member of the legume family, lentils are an excellent source of folate, a B-vitamin that appears to be essential for mood and proper nerve function in the brain. Low levels of folate have been linked to depression. In fact, a Harvard study showed that 38% of depressed women are deficient in folate. Although researchers don’t yet fully understand the connection, folate deficiency appears to impair the metabolism of neurotransmitters important for mood such as serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline. A cup of cooked lentils provides 90% of the recommended daily allowance of folic acid. A healthy bonus: lentils contain protein and fiber, which are filling and help stabilize blood sugar. Other sources of folate include fortified breakfast cereals, green vegetables (such as spinach and broccoli), liver and beans.
H+F FIT TIP The best way to be happy and elevate your mood? Get your body moving! According to a 2005 study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, getting active for 30 minutes a day, six days a week, can alleviate chronic sadness just as well as antidepressants. Even a brisk, 15-minute walk “can improve your mood and increase your energy for up to two hours,” says Robert Thayer, a professor of psychology at California State University and author of Calm Energy: How People Regulate Mood With Food and Exercise.

Kaitlyn Doyle, 12—a 6th grader
Why do you think it is important to be a healthy kid? If I’m healthy as a kid, then most likely I’ll be healthy as an adult. Being healthy allows me to play the sports I love, play with friends, and do fun things with my family.
at Sacred Heart School in Southaven, MS—is not one of the above statistics. Moving to Mississippi in 2003 came with many changes and challenges, including the ever so famous “Southern” cooking styles and foods found in restaurants, friends’ homes, and school lunchrooms. But because Kaitlyn continued to make healthy food choices and engage in an active lifestyle, she’s just as healthy now as when she arrived! Her consistent participation in sports and fitness activities, determination to stay healthy and active, along with her wellbalanced nutritional habits, is why she was chosen for this month’s Fit Kid.
What’s been your biggest fitness accomplishment? Flock Around the Block 5k in Hernando, MS, where I won 1st place in my age group. It was tough! If you could build your own fitness gym/center, what would you include in it? It would have an indoor/ outdoor soccer field and volleyball/basketball court, plus a room with a giant foam pit and trampolines!

THE UNROMANTIC TRUTH WITH CHRIS MILAM What does an average day look like for you on the road?
I hit the road sometime between 8 and 11 a.m. I like to get to the next city as early as possible. I usually find a coffeehouse near the venue to do some work and catch up on emails for the rest of the afternoon. Once evening hits, I typically get to the venue, load in, sound-check, drop off my guitar and merchandise, then warm up. I usually have a few hours to kill at this point. I might meet friends in town for dinner, or hang with the other artists backstage. Then I play the show, usually an hour, and chat with the crowd after the set and get everything squared with the venue, usually another few hours. I drive to wherever I’m staying that night, sleep a few hours, wake up and do it again. So, a day’s worth of planning and preparation goes into 50 minutes of music. There’s a lot of hurry-up-and-wait. By the time you actually play the show, you’re begging to play the show.
“It’s a huge challenge to stay vocally healthy and prevent exhaustion. I’m still learning how to do that. That’s all easy motivation to make smart, healthy decisions when I’m traveling.”
-Chris Milam
So you don’t go out and party it up?
No. There’s this idea of the touring rock star—every night’s a crazy party, every day’s a junk food buffet, everyone makes money, nobody gets sick, and if anything goes wrong, the label cleans up the mess. That might’ve been true 20 years ago. Because I’m an independent artist, I’m still my own booking agent, business manager, tour manager, web designer and social media person. If I get sick, the tour won’t be successful. But as any tour goes on, it’s a huge challenge to stay vocally healthy and prevent exhaustion. I’m still learning how to do that. That’s all easy motivation to make smart, healthy decisions when I’m traveling.
With nothing but fast food around, how do you eat healthy on the road?
Eating on the road is a little feast or famine. I carry some staples with me like Kashi cereal, trail mix, granola bars and local produce when I can find it. There are days when that’s all I eat. Then there are the days when friends insist on giving me a home-cooked meal. That’s one of my favorite parts about the road.
What do you do differently when on tour than when at home?
Everything is geared towards staying healthy, because if I get sick, I can’t sing. And then I don’t get paid. But because my hours are abnormal, I have to overcompensate. For example, a doctor might typically recommend three liters of water per day. To stay vocally healthy, I probably drink twice that. My meals aren’t always up to me, so I have to make sure I’m getting vitamins one way or another. The sad, unromantic truth is that there are a lot of touring artists out there taking vitamins, staying hydrated and getting to bed at a reasonable hour. WHY AM I DEPRESSED DURING THE HOLIDAYS? The holiday season brings a sense of good cheer, enjoyment, parties and celebration. For some people, the holiday season means added stress because of extra commitments to an already chaotic schedule. The disruption of daily life due to shopping and travel may lead to guilt and overspending. Financial difficulties may occur and complicate matters even more. In addition, some people are unable to afford the cost of travel to be with loved ones during the holidays, which leads to isolation and subsequent sadness. This emotional reaction does not reflect the joy of the season and is commonly referred to as the “holiday blues”. While these symptoms may be common, they should not be overlooked. They may be the start of a more serious anxiety or mood disorder.
How Can I Beat the Holiday Blues? Create a plan to help you cope with the added stress of the holidays: Practice moderation: Don’t overeat and make sure your plans include adequate rest. Food and sugar consumption can actually lead to fatigue. Avoid alcohol: Alcohol consumption can lead to disrupted sleep cycles, and because it’s a depressant, can also contribute to a depressed mood. Don’t overspend: Set up a reasonable budget and stick to it.
Time: It takes time to heal if you have lost a loved one. Try visiting a friend or planning to be with family members during the holidays. Reach out to others and choose not to isolate yourself. Exercise: During exercise, your body releases natural substances called endorphins which are thought to improve mood. Seek Help: If the “holiday blues” seem more severe, seek help from a mental health provider who can determine if you are experiencing depression or anxiety and offer support or treatment. My tennis serve causes me pain all day. Did I tear my rotator cuff?
health+fitness | December 2011
One of the top five injuries for tennis players occurs in the shoulder due to the repeated stresses put on the shoulder from strokes— particularly the overhead serve. These repeated stresses in the shoulder can lead to pain and restrict motion for playing and daily living. While shoulder pain can be attributed to several diagnoses, we will focus this article on rotator cuff injuries.
22
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that attach to the ball portion of the shoulder joint. Its two main functions are holding the ball in the socket and helping to lift and rotate the arm. Disorders of the rotator cuff can range from mild irritation (tendonitis) to large tears of the rotator cuff tendons. Persons with rotator cuff problems usually complain of pain in the side of the shoulder that can radiate down the arm toward the elbow or around the back toward the neck. These symptoms are often made worse with activity, especially overhead movements. As symptoms get worse, people can experience pain at night, crepitus (a crunchy sound in the shoulder), and even weakness. The treatment of rotator cuff disease consists primarily of activity modification, anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen, and physical therapy designed to improve the strength and function of the rotator cuff. Occasionally, when these techniques have failed to resolve the problem, surgery may be necessary. Through modern advances in surgery, the rotator cuff can almost always be treated through a series of small incisions and the use of a special camera called an arthroscope. People should know these key facts about their rotator cuff problem. First, they are very common and become more common with age. Second, there are many treatment options for rotator cuff problems. Surgery is not often needed. Third, there are several other problems that can have symptoms similar to a rotator cuff injury. So, it’s important to be evaluated and treated by a trained orthopaedic surgeon who will develop an optimal rapid recovery plan for you.

he at hly l i v ing Dr. Leslie Smith I have suffered from depression for years and haven’t had much success from antidepressant medications. Is there anything else?
Neurostar TMS Therapy is groundbreaking new technology available for effective, non-invasive, and non-pill treatment for depression. Dr. Leslie E. Smith and the TMS Center of Memphis introduces to the Mid-South Neurostar TMS Therapy (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), a brain treatment which uses MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) energy pulses into a specific area in the brain that is crucial in mood regulation. The energy pulses stimulate the brain to heal. TMS is a FDA-approved and nonexperimental treatment for depression.
health+fitness | December 2011
In clinical trials, 1 in 2 patients suffering from depression reported significant improvement and 1 in 3 patients were completely free of depression symptoms after 6 weeks of treatment. Other applications are under study for treating Parkinson’s disease, post-stroke aphasia, pain syndromes, hallucinations and tinnitus. TMS has been studied for more than 20 years and has proven effective even for the most severely depressed person.
24
The procedure typically lasts less than one hour. During this time the patient is awake, alert and comfortable in a reclining chair with the option of listening to music, reading a magazine or simply relaxing during treatment session. There are no limitations on performing daily activities immediately before or after treatment. Equally important, there are no systemic or cognitive side-effects, such as memory loss, weight gain, fatigue, or sexual dysfunction. TMS treatment requires 30 sequential treatments.
More than 10,000 TMS treatments have been safely performed across the nation since 2008. Slight to moderate scalp discomfort during treatment sessions has been the most commonly noted side effect. Our clinic has seen remission in over 50% of local patients, and significant improvement in 70% of treated patients. An Early Start Helps Nick Rice Fit Everything In How does a divorce attorney with a thriving practice and 10-hour workdays find time for exercise and nutrition at all, much less on a regular basis? For Nick Rice, it all starts at 4:00 a.m., without hitting the snooze button. First up: supplements, green lemonade and whey protein. What is green lemonade, you ask? Nick tweaks the Raw Foods Diet version in his juicer with kale, cucumber, romaine, lemon, lime, ginger and apple. This detox cocktail gives the body a rush of enzymes that helps make up for years of eating overly processed food. Next on his early morning ritual is the 6:00 CrossFit class at Faction Strength and Conditioning, home of CrossFit Memphis. After the warm-up and strength/skill exercise comes Nick’s favorite part, the MetCon, multiple exercises done at high intensity for a set amount of time or a set rep range. This is where all the competition occurs. Scores are posted on Facebook for all classes throughout the day, giving Nick instant gratification as he sees how he measures up to the group, along with measuring his effectiveness. For him, it’s a daily reaffirmation that all the nutrition, supplements, strength training and endurance training is paying dividends. After a post-workout shake, Nick heads home to shower and grab his pre-packed food for the day, then it’s off to the office. Why does he do this, and how does he make it work?
How did you get into CrossFit?
A friend told me about his CrossFit program in North Carolina for months before I investigated CrossFit Memphis. After years of the typical gym-rat 3 sets of 20 reps, I fell in love with this program because of the functional movements and also the competition with everyone else at the gym. Even in this competitive environment, everyone is friendly and welcoming—whatever your fitness level, age or ability.
But 4:00 a.m.?
This early start allows me to get up and get my “hobby” out of the way before I start my job. I’m often at the office late and can’t have a late afternoon exercise session looming over my head, so 4 a.m. allows me to get going while everyone else is asleep. This kind of workout is more of a shock to the system than I’ve ever gotten from a cup of coffee. With this accomplishment under my belt at the start of the day, I’m alert and ready for whatever comes my way. Exercise regulates your mood, and with my nutrition regime I’m sharper and more deliberate for the work to be done and decisions to be made during the day.
Nick trains on the rings at CrossFit Memphis
So, do you think CrossFit fits your personality?
health+fitness | December 2011
I like structure. The same way with work. When I’m in the office, it’s time to work. I don’t take hour and a half lunches—I take ten minutes to go to the kitchen and down a small meal, then get back to my desk. The attention to detail that I bring to my hobby is much more acute in the office because this is my profession, my passion, my livelihood. In law and in CrossFit, the attention to detail and the ability to be at the top of my game makes all the difference.
26
Is CrossFit your only source of exercise?
Attorney Nick Rice’s work ethic parallels his work-out ethic
No, twice a week I do my distance run. Lately I’m clocking anywhere from six to ten miles. For me, the runs are separate from CrossFit because they’re more of an exercise-induced meditation. I get some of my best ideas for cases when I’m running and there’s a free flow of thought. My cases are always on my mind. During my runs, there is a free flow of thought and I find myself thinking with a fresher perspective that might not occur while in the office.
Whether you’re in the gym or on a distance run, what music gets you going?
Well, that’s constantly changing, from new bands to old favorites. Right now for CrossFit, it’s the Misfits. For running, it’s the Clash or rap. At the gym, it depends on how aggressive I want to get during the workout, which is another thing I like about CrossFit. The coaches have allowed me to become the de facto DJ for the 6 a.m. class, by allowing me to plug in my iPod and regulate what we hear. I’ve only received minimal complaints. I might suggest for CrossFiters some High on Fire, Dead Kennedys, Motorhead, Danzig, Rammstein, Henry Rollins, The Sword or some Memphis flavor with Neighborhood Texture Jam.
Do you see yourself CrossFiting for life?
Definitely. I’m sure there will come a point in my life where I’ll have to slow down, but I have no faith I’ll be able to recognize when that point comes. By H+F Staff

Riding around in our “homeland” was extremely moving and sentimental. Why Bike: Of all the exercise I’ve done, cycling covers the most ground in the shortest amount of time. Going downhill is awesome, and makes those uphills worthwhile! Motivation: My husband, Brad, inspires me because he turned his physical life around in the past few years. He used to be a couch potato, playing video games for hours on end, eating potato chips dipped in ketchup. One day after waking up and deciding to be healthy, he completely changed, turning into an avid triathlete and ironman! WW Gear: I wear a skirt for religious reasons. There is definitely no upside to wearing a skirt while working out. It’s just the way I was brought up as an orthodox Jew—that some orthodox women do not wear pants or shorts in public. I do wear the typical biking shorts under my skirt. I do wear the skirt when I race as well. Training Tips: Work hard. Follow through. Obstacle Course: Two days before the Ironman I had a bike wreck a resulting in a brief blackout. It ripped me up really bad. I laid in bed for two days, bleeding onto the sheets, put on compression everywhere, and pounded out an Ironman with a respectable time. I had trained half a year for that and wasn’t going to back down. I suffered for weeks afterwards with serious wound healing issues, a huge muscle hematoma and an infection, but all that’s over now and the pride will always stay with me. Pre-Race Rituals: Prayer, coffee, a little breakfast and then psych myself up Gym Time: I work out at the Jewish Community Center which is awesome. I also train outside and workout at my house as well.

Sabbath: I do miss some good races and great group rides with friends on Saturday. But I make up for it the rest of the week. I will do a long run very early Friday morning. I would run the first hour myself and then hook up with a group run for the rest. Same concept for long rides on Sunday. Truthfully, in Ironman training, once you start getting in the long runs and long rides, you’re on your own a lot of the time. There aren’t too many people that crazy.

C rost ini It’s the holiday season, and the over-indulgence began at Thanksgiving and is going strong by now… it is hard to avoid the constant stream of Christmas cookies and candy at the office, never mind the cocktail parties featuring tables laden with cheesy dips, buttery rolls, and fatty meats. Even the crudite is served with a mayonnaisey dip that is guaranteed to pack on the pounds this Christmas! It’s nice to offer folks some snacks that provide a nice base for the poinsettias and champagne punch without giving them a guilty food hangover to deal with after the party. These three crostinis can be served already assembled by the host, or as a crostini bar with a pile of grilled or

toasted bread, and bowls of toppings. Each one is light but still hardy enough to fill bellies. To make crostini, I like to use my Panini grill. It makes nice grill marks and I don’t have to add any fat to the bread. If you don’t have a Panini grill, you can toast slices of baguette brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with salt and pepper in the oven at 325 for about 10 minutes, until they just begin to brown. Do this just a couple of hours, no more, before your party. You don’t want them to dry out too much. One baguette makes about twenty toasts.

Crostini with Minty Edamame
This beet hummus is earthy and warmly satisfying while being healthful and beautiful- the deep fuschia color of the beets is striking served against a white background.
This edamame spread, like the beet hummus, is a lovely and light appetizer that is as satisfying as a slice of cheese, but without the guilt. And with just four ingredients, it couldn’t be easier!

2 beets, trimmed and peeled 4 tablespoons olive oil salt and pepper to taste 2 cloves garlic 1 can chickpeas, drained 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar
For the beets, place them on a baking pan lined with foil. Drizzle with a tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Roast for 30 minutes in a 425 degree oven and set aside. When they are cool enough to handle, cut the beets into quarters and toss them into the bowl of a food processor. Add the garlic, chickpeas, remaining three tablespoons of olive oil and the white wine vinegar and process until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with crostini.
– – – – –
2 cups shelled edamame 1 teaspoon dried mint 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar salt and pepper to taste
Place all ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth. Season as needed with salt and pepper. Serve with crostini.

Holiday Cranberry Chutney Recipe... Cranberry sauce has never been a hit with my family. We always had it on the Thanksgiving table, but it was solely a matter of tradition. Nobody actually liked or ate the stuff. Who wants to eat something that still has the indentations from the can even after it is sliced and set on the table? At the end of the meal when all the turkey, dressing, and mashed potatoes were gone, rest assured, the cranberry sauce remained. The year I began cooking seriously, we decided to host my family’s holiday meal, and I started looking for an alternative to the canned cranberry sauce of previous years. I wanted something that wasn’t out of a can and wouldn’t be left sitting on the table after all the good stuff was gone.
– 1/2 cup cider vinegar – 1/4 cup water
The following recipe is my current version of cranberry chutney. It is simplified and single family sized. Try it for your next holiday meal and enjoy the antioxidant benefits of cranberry with this delicious alternative. Plus, you get to listen to the cranberries ‘pop’ as they cook.

– 1 stick of cinnamon – 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger – 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves – 1 /4 teaspoon red pepper flakes – 1 cup raisins Place all ingredients in saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring often. Reduce heat and cook until the cranberries have stopped bursting. Chill until ready to serve.
Holiday Cocktails
Be Good for Goodness Sake! ‘Tis the season NOT to eat and drink like you have a permanent residence at the North Pole. H+F has made a list (and checked it twice) of holiday cocktails that are not so nice.
OH! You better watch out, better not cry, better not pout, I’m telling you why, gulp these down and 10 more pounds are coming to town!
– 2 Granny Smith apples, chopped
– 2 cups light brown sugar
I quickly became a fan of chutney—any chutney. Peach, pear, mango, cranberry, you name it. I love it, and it’s so easy to make. Don’t be intimidated by the name. Think of chutney like a relish or jam with a few different spices. Most chutney is made with fruit, sugar, raisins and vinegar. It takes on a spicy yet sweet flavor thanks to ingredients such as ginger, cloves and cumin. I prefer to use brown sugar because of the rich color it provides.
Diss It
Ingredients: – 2 packages fresh (or frozen) cranberries
We found a recipe for Cranberry Chutney. At this point my only experience with chutney was Major Grey’s out of a jar, and I wasn’t exactly sure how this cranberry version would taste. After gathering the necessary ingredients, we made it, and it was a hit. Even the pickiest members of the family (the kids) gave it a try, and liked it. Now, I admit there were leftovers, but I attribute that to the sheer amount we made because we had far more than any one family could eat.

Drink the Stars this Holiday Season! The simple act of popping a bottle of sparkling wine or champagne is the aural equivalent of yelling, “Let the games begin!” Nothing else sets the mood or welcomes a celebration like a bottle of bubbly, and during the holiday season it allows us to imbibe while avoiding the guilt (and calories!) of dairy and sugar-laden cocktails. A glass of champagne averages 100 calories with barely over a gram of carbohydrates. And what other drink looks so great in your hand? As my friends know, I am never far away from a flute of happiness. If there are 49 million bubbles in one bottle of champagne, then my body has housed at least a trillion! True Champagne is born in the Champagne area of France, just north of Paris. It can only be made from three grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. I’ve roamed the hallowed region twice in my life, trying my best to get lost in the underground caves that house the precious bottles, only to be scolded by the tour guide to “Come along! Come along!” But if you’re under the impression that outstanding sparklers must come from this region, you need to branch out! Almost every country produces some sort of sparkling wine, usually made from indigenous grapes that may otherwise go unknown. Red grape makes up one of my favorite cavas, or Spanish sparkling wine. California produces some of the world’s highest rated sparkling wine, such as Schramsberg from Napa Valley, the only sparkling wine served at White House dinners since Nixon. As difficult as it is, I have narrowed my recommendations to these wonderful wines. I encourage you to explore the exciting world of sparklers! Cheers! Happy Holidays!
Segura Viudas Rose (Spain)
I keep a couple of bottles of each of the cavas from this producer around the house for any occasion—like Sunday afternoon. Made from 90% Trepat (a grape that grows only in this region) and 10% Garnacha, it boasts beautiful deep pink with tiny bubbles, along with aromas and flavors of strawberry and currant. $8.99
Korbel Brut Extra Dry (California)
Founded in the mid-1800s by a trio of Bohemian-born Czech brothers, F. Korbel & Brothers produces this country’s most recognized sparkler. The Extra Dry is a refreshing blend of Chenin Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and French Colombard which offers up flavors of citrus and spice. $12.99
La Marca Prosecco (Italy)
A place and a grape, Prosecco is known for producing delightful sparklers that are light and clean with sprightly acidity. Pretty honeysuckle and floral aromas give way to ripe pear, crisp green apple and citrus flavors—perfect for brunch or fruit tart desserts. $13.99
Saint-Meyland Brut (France)
A bubbly made from the usual Burgundian suspects: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Aligote and Gamay. Sparkling gold like a glittered ornament with toasty aromas of vanilla and spice, it is aged 18 months in the bottle and pairs well with baked brie or the ubiquitous hot crab dip. $16.99
Gruet Brut Rose (New Mexico)
This 100% Pinot Noir sparkler comes from the most unlikely place just south of Albuquerque. French-born Gilbert Gruet and family produced sparkling wines in their home country before planting vineyards here at 4,300 ft. (some of the highest regions in the country). Its deeply colored garnet, zesty acidity and essence of strawberry make it beautiful as an aperitif or nightcap. $18.99

Roederer Estate Brut (California)
38
Fashioned in California by the company who brings us Roederer Cristal, one of the most expensive champagnes in the world! A staple at my house, this blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is aged a minimum of two years on the yeast. This truly elegant wine is crisp and complex with notes of baked fruit, grilled pineapple and nuts. $21.99
Moet & Chandon Imperial (France)
A true Champagne from one of the top houses. Founded in 1743, Moet & Chandon have remained true to their deep roots, but currently have revamped their best-selling, non-vintage sparkler. It’s a bit drier than in years past, revealing more lemon-lime notes along with yeastiness of fresh baked brioche. $54.99
Veuve Clicquot ‘Yellow Label’ Brut (France)
A class act all the way. The widow (veuve) Clicquot took over this house upon the death of her husband in 1805, making her the first woman to run a winery in France. Deep flavors of baked apples, biscuits, spice and citrus meld together in a magical bubbly world of happiness. $56.99 By Angela Moon
