“A good time was had by all” was the way a great many Picton Gazette social columns would end. Look back through the pages of Canada's oldest community newspaper and a Betty Matthie or a Rose Simpson-penned missive might have wrapped up a pleasant evening among friends and family by using such a phrase. It's too bad the West Bloomfield News wasn't still in these pages because it could have aptly described the genuine good feelings surrounding the annual Farm Family Fun Night (formerly known as the Twilight Meeting) this past Thursday at Wilhome Farms. Close to 500 people were in attendance as the Williams family dutifully rolled out the red carpet for their friends, family, the Prince Edward County Agri-

The Prince Edward Community Centre bustled last Thursday as thousands of visitors poured into Picton for the Prince Edward District Women's Institute's annual art and craft sale. The yearly show celebrated 31 years in existence Thursday. The show helps the club support accessible transit in the county and a number of other Women's Institute initiatives each year. Past-president Nancy Wood said the crowds were great and everything was running smoothly late Thursday afternoon. “It's wonderful, just wonderful,” said Wood. “The crowds are great and everyone is carrying packages when they leave.” As is generally the case for such shows, the weather played an important role in Thursday's show. It was sunny with blue sky, but not too hot, said Wood. “It's always good weather, it's just not hot weather this year, which we're very thankful for.”. The craft show began as a way to raise funds for accessible transit in Prince Edward County. For about seven years now the show has been able to support an accessible bus on the strength of $115,000 worth of donations to that cause. “With this show we're

also able to give to numerous other causes – Reaching for Rainbows, the ROC (Recreation Outreach Centre), the backpack program, PEFAC and their children's program, the hospital – anything,” said Wood. “Every cent we make here gets turned right back to the community.” Wood said she believes the show is also a boost for the municipality as the show regularly draws thousands of visitors each year. Wood said this year the show attracted approximately 3,500 people. “People come and spend the weekend. The restaurants are certainly aware of this day and have extra staff on hand,” she said. “It's a win-win for everyone.” With more than 240 vendors there was no shortage of arts and crafts for visitors to check out. Everything from fibre art, photos, and jewelry were available. Wood said the vendors each brought items that were “very high quality.” “We appreciate the support from the community,” said Wood. “We don't have enough members to run this on our own, so we call on neighbours and friends and family and they turn up with their own friends with them. Without them we wouldn't be able to hold this.”

culture community and anyone interested in celebrating two centuries of farming on the same lands within the same family. The turnout was a record setter for the Prince Edward Holstein Club who organize the event and that's fitting as the night was a joint celebration of all things dairy and the Williams Family and their contribution as the coun-

High attendance suggests fun night is starting to catch on with non-farming families

FARM, from page 1

“We are ecstatic with the number of people that stopped by, Justin Williams told the Gazette. “We were expecting around 350 and that number sounds like an unofficial record for the twilight meeting. The stalls and stables were scrubbed, the flowers were in place and everything was neat as a pin Thursday and it took a team effort to prepare for the biggest evening in the county's dairy industry. “Any spare time, we were definitely working to get farm up and ready for visitors. One good thing about hosting the meeting, it gives you the extra incentive you need to get the little jobs done and not push them back. If the farm was the star of

the show Thursday, among the leading cast members were Bob and Helen Williams. Retired from the day-today rigours of agriculture, Prince Edward County's hall of fame members were greeted by many of the attendees who stopped by to have a chin wag with venerable veteran of local producing. Justin Williams said it was wonderful to see his grandparents reconnect with friends old and new. “There were a lot people that my grandparents have met through farming and Granada is still active in agriculture so a lot of people were taking time to see him. He was hard to find sometimes because there was so many people that wanted to see Bob. People still look up to him for what he's done in agriculture and it was very

cool to have the three different generations, myself, my dad and my grandfather there meeting with our friends, Williams added. Walter Miller, the president of the Prince Edward County Holstein Club, was complimentary is his words with regards to the Williams family and their hosting of the event- especially on the occasion of Wilhome's 200th

anniversary. “The grounds, the buildings and the cattle were all in excellent shape and all the club members appreciate the effort that went into hosting the event, Miller said. “200 years in the same family is quite an achievement and I will tell you a lot of people, both farmers and non-farmers, are awe inspired by that.

Miller agreed. “We are trying to keep them to the populated areas and it can be tough to find a host and a central location but in the past few years, we've had quite a few young families come out and that gets the children exposed to farming in a way they normally wouldn't, he said.

For the past few years, the club has attempted to inform the non-farming public that this event is open to them and the high attendance could be a sign that county residents — either newcomers or well removed from agriculture- are getting the message. “It's a good indication that it's starting to catch on,

If the unit scans a licence plate number that does not create a hit on the Ministry of Transportation database, the scan is deleted within minutes and this privacy by design measure drew praise by the Privacy Commissioner during the formal ALPR roll out late last year. “Ontario motorists expect to be protected from unsafe drivers, but also not to be tracked as they go about their daily lives. We are pleased to report that the OPP used a privacy-by-design approach in developing its automatic license plate recognition system, and that when a scanned license plate does not match the list of unsafe drivers, it will be deleted from the system within minutes, said Ann Cavoukian.

Whether they couldn’t find a renewal form, didn’t wish to pay the $90 or so to renew, or simply couldn’t make it to Service Ontario, many Ontario residents have likely driven without updated licence plates at some time. Alas, their scofflaw ways are about to be dealt a forced change. The Prince Edward OPP detachment is now using a technological breakthrough to read the licence plates on motor vehicles. The local police service is currently sharing a vehicle equipped with an Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) scanner. Community services officer Anthony Mann said the unit was first deployed in April of this year and is currently shared with the Quinte West OPP, the Centre Hastings OPP and the local detachment. “The East Region is the first areas in the province to have this technology and the OPP is one of the first police services in Canada to have ALPR, he told reporters Thursday. The unit has a pair of infra red cameras installed on the roof that are hard wired to a computer in the vehicle's console. The cameras are multidirectional and are capable of scanning multiple licence plates in the span of a few seconds both when the police car is stationary and in motion. “The licence plate is queried and the information attached to the licence plate is examined. If anything is afoul with the plate or the possible driver, it is passed to the officer behind the wheel, Mann explained. Those driving with a suspended licence, a stolen plate, a stolen vehicle and yes, an expired validation sticker, will cause for an alarm to ring inside the unit. The local detachment has had use of the vehicle since April 1 and Mann said that it has proven to be “a very effective tool. One way the local constabulary has used the unit is to place it in an inconspicuous place and position the camera to get vehicles coming and going. “One officer said that

scanned for those reasons, there is an alarm that goes of and we would pull that driver over to make them aware of the fact their plate was obscured and not readable, Mann added. More ALPR are expected to be added to OPP fleets across the province in the coming years.

glare, sunlight, darkness and even adverse weather conditions. And those of you that have snow or mud or a cover that might obscure your plate, that will be reason enough to meet and great one of your local OPP officers on the side of the road. “If the plate cannot be

From sunrise to sunset and even beyond, Consecon was the place to be Saturday — at least, that’s what visitors and locals seemed to indicate through fits of pouring rain and blazing heat. The activities on the fourth annual Consecon Community Day were spread throughout the entire village. The Masonic Lodge hosted a pancake breakfast. There was a car boot sale and other games at Emms Family Restaurant just off the Loyalist Parkway, garage sales throughout the town, a pig roast in front of the Legion downtown in the village, and a street dance with Little Bluff following. The OPP and Prince Edward County fire department showed off their vehicles, the Consecon library had its annual used book sale and there were kids crafts and healthy activity demonstrations throughout town. At Janet B’s Gallery, visitors could add their touch to a communal piece of art. Somewhere along the way, organizers even managed to

let loose Volunteers drop the gate at the start of the Consecon soap box derby as Lila

Ruan starts off the first run of the day. Ruan would end up winning the junior division as her run was fastest among the children aged 5 and 6 participating. (Adam Bramburger/Gazette staff) The biggest crowds of the day, however, were reserved for the main event on the Mill Street hill as people lined both sides in anticipation of the 1 p.m. soap box derby. A steady downpour right as the races were about to start didn’t scare away anyone, though some rushed back to their cars and homes to take cover. Within 15 minutes, registration continued and mayoral hopefuls Robert Quaiff and Jeff Goddard mingled

squeeze in a car wash to raise money to help combat muscular dystrophy. “There is something for everyone and the best part is it is bringing all kinds of people out to Consecon,” said Bill McMahon, one of the event’s organizers. “We’ve had events all throughout the village and everyone is having sales. Obviously, it’s better for them to have them all at the same time.”

Most racers and spectators stuck around through sweltering humidity as competitors took their turns getting two runs in on the course. The event had its share of scenes to marvel at. Some new design trends and some drivers doing their best to fit into their racers and be more aerodynamic led to some quick speeds and some new names atop the leaderboards, which had been held by some of the same people for several years. There were also some thrilling crashes on the course this year, starting with the first competitor barrelling into the hay bales at the end of the course. A few riders flipped over in their cars and another saw his axel come undone, but the St. John Ambulance was on seen to treat any minor injuries that occurred. n A young bather from Chicago almost drowned at the Sandbanks when a heavy wind and high waves pulled her off a sand bar. Luckily, George Cornish, of Belleville, saw the girl and jumped into the water fully dressed to save her. He instructed her to not let her mouth fill with water until he was able to bring her to shore. n Detroit police believe robbery was the motive for the people responsible for killing Picton native Ralph Pulver in his drug store. Rumours circulated that two men of suspicious appearance entered the store before it closed, while others suggested one man rushed away in a waiting automobile. More than $300 in post office money was missing from the store, leading police to believe he was shot to death for the money held on site. n After nine days in camp at the Picton Armouries, the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment was to break camp and about 200 men were ready to put the intensive training they received to use.

n A visiting Montreal airman suffered a tragic death while swimming near Wellington. LAC. DeCare became entangled in the weeds of West Lake and could not become free. Two doctors attempted to resuscitate the 22-year-old man, but they were unsuccessful. n Canadian troops in Italy, including those who came from Prince Edward County were able to enjoy tomato juice packed by Benson’s in Prince Edward County. Cpl. Arthur Still, one of the soldiers enjoying the product, wrote that he actually used to collect a paycheque from Benson’s and he indicated he hoped there would be a day when he’d again be on the canning company’s payroll. n Wilfred S. Lane, a guest speaker before the Picton Rotary club, told his audience Picton would greatly benefit from a community centre to discourage juvenile delinquency and to build up youth to look forward to productive lives ahead.

60 years ago — 1954

n A pleasure boater from Toronto was steering his boat across the Adolphus Reach when the steering mechanism failed to operate, leaving the boat in the path of the Quinte Loyalist ferry. One man jumped into the water as the boats collided, while the other stayed in the boat. The man who stayed suffered a dislocated shoulder. The boat was damaged but did not capsize in the collision. nPicton council approved the borrowing of $97,000 to allow the town to pay for the cost of the repairs and installation of its water system.

20 years ago — 1994

n PECI was slated to receive $40,916 from the province to upgrade computer technology and technological studies. The money was part of a $60-million envelope to be handed out to 600 schools over a five-year period. The funding required a commitment from the school toward ongoing community participation and mentorship in technology. n Dan Korchuk and Rick Kewin, two students working with the Prince Edward Conservation Authority were among the first to utilize a new Watershed Report Card template to study local waterways.

Field guide to butterflies long needed

The field guide was out of date before it was even launched! This frustrating experience happens to all authors of field guides and reference books when they deal with something as dynamic as wildlife. It even happened to me a year ago when I updated the checklist to the birds of Prince Edward County. After running off over 200 copies, not more than one week later, a new species was confirmed and added to the cumulative list of birds for this area. And, so it was for Dr. Paul Catling when he produced his Field Guide To Butterflies of Prince Edward County and Surrounding area. The intoxicating and unmistakable aroma of the freshly printed books had not even faded when a new butterfly species touched down on county vegetation. The little glassywing, a rather dark butterfly belonging to a group known as skippers was actually found by the author himself, at Macaulay Mountain. However, its omission wasn’t that serious. The uncommon butterfly was already in the book; it just hadn’t been seen in Prince Edward County. Dr. Catling likely had a feeling that such an omission might take place, given the way he designed the book. Although the book does focus on the county species as the name suggests, he structured

OUTDOOR RAMBLES TERRY SPRAGUE

the coverage area to include everything within a 100 km radius of Bloomfield. Roughly, from Gananoque, west to Port Hope, and from Bon Echo south to the south shore of Lake Ontario in the U.S. However, Prince Edward County remains the focus, and each species in the book is indicated as to whether or not it has been documented for Prince Edward County. A checklist at the back of the book simplifies the search for a species presence in the area by breaking down the occurrence of each one treated, into Prince Edward County, Ontario in general, or New York State. Catling says the county’s natural landscape is remarkable and that guides to some of what exists here are long overdue. Hence, the new

book on butterflies to accompany those already written on the birds, herptiles and wildflowers in response to the need for these guides, given the current interest in our flora and fauna. Catling acknowledges that only two field naturalists have done any previous work on the butterflies of the area. Yvette and David Bree, both Park Naturalists, have gathered records and sightings that are now in the data bases. Over 100 butterfly species are treated in this compact 63page full colour guide, but only 77 of those are attributed to Prince Edward County (78, if you count the glassywing). The author attributes the relatively low number to lack of study, but thanks to the Brees, the list is certainly higher than what it could have been had they not helped. The new book just doesn’t dive head first into the species account, but rather, devotes 15 pages to gently introducing the reader to the area covered, how to use the book, butterfly life history, food preferences, some information on recording sightings through the Internet’s Ontario Butterfly Atlas and Ebutterfly (much like eBird), as well as some key areas to look for butterflies. The book also includes a page on the metamorphosis of everyone’s favourite butterfly, the Monarch. There is also a section on current threats and

conservation measures. Included in the book, of course, is one of our more recent immigrants, the giant swallowtail, first arriving here some 15 years ago, and now widely spread. In more southern regions of its distribution, the larva feeds on citrus, where it has been given the unflattering nickname of "orange dog." This might explain the butterfly’s attraction to prickly ash which can also produce a citrusy smell. It comes by it quite honestly, since prickly ash is a member of the Rue family, along with oranges and lemons, etc. Prince Edward County Field Naturalists president Myrna Wood says that Catling prepared the book for the conservation of natural habitats, with all proceeds being directed to the naturalist group, founded in 1997. “Firstly, it is going toward the public education of all buyers of the book and, secondly, proceeds may be used to fund other activities that benefit conservation of the South Shore specifically.” Butterflies of Prince Edward County and the Surrounding Region is available at Books & Company, in Picton. Bonter joins the race to represent Conservatives in Bay of Quinte

Three men have now entered the race to represent the Conservative Party of Canada in the new Bay of Quinte riding. On Tuesday, longtime Ameliasburgh apple grower Don Bonter announced that he intends to seek the nomination to represent the party in the 2015 federal election. Bonter previously represented the Progressive Conservative Party provincially in the Prince Edward, Lennox and South Hastings riding and has been a riding association president at both the provincial and

federal levels. A former manager and owner of Bayview Orchards, Bonter also is a former vicechair of the Ontario Apple Marketing Commission, a former president of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and was a member of the Canadian Horticultural Council and the labour committee of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association. Bonter made his announcement to seek the nomination at an orchard in Quinte West.

John Smylie, the owner of Smylie’s Independent Grocer in Trenton, and a philanthropist made his intentions known in mid-July, while Belleville councillor and radio personality Jodie Jenkins was the first to declare his intention to seek the nomination in June. The position became open when incumbent Prince Edward-Hastings MP Daryl Kramp announced he would move to the new HastingsLennox and Addington riding in the next election. That riding encompasses a large base of

support in the northern parts of Hastings County. The Liberal Party of Canada has already elected Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis as its nominee for the upcoming election in the new riding as he defeated previous candidate Peter Tinsley in a constituency vote. Past Prince Edward-Hastings NDP candidate Michael McMahon had publicly said he’d consider running again, for the party if some younger candidates do not emerge. -Staff

Preserving the legacy of the Great War

ONE hundred years ago Monday, a simple telegram came from England telling Canada’s governor general that Great Britain was at war with Germany. Through that simple communication, a great many lives changed forever within this fledgling dominion. Though historians argue about the level of threat there may have been to the Americas at the time, the prevailing thoughts among Canadian politicians was that Canada was tied to the British and if they felt there was a threat brewing in Europe to the Empire, it was time to send troops and resources across the Atlantic Ocean to help with the war efforts. Over the next four years, some 600,000 Canadians would serve in the military, a number of those people going against their will as this country brought mandatory conscription into law in 1917 — amid much debate, particularly in Quebec, where citizens rioted and four people were actually left dead. The Canadian War Museum notes that about 424,000 Canadians served overseas during the Great War. About 60,000 of them died and another 172,000 were wounded in some way while they served. Many more Canadians sacrificed at home, through working, through supporting bond programs to raise funds for the war, and even through new forms of taxation. Some question whether Canada should have been involved in the First World War to the degree it was, particularly since the battles took place so far away and since this country had already started to take steps to form its independence from Britain. Regardless of that motive for supporting the war effort so strongly — first by volunteerism, then by the controversial conscription — there can be little doubt that involvement in the First World War helped shape the Canadian identity moving forward. In a nation that hadn’t been forged through a revolution, the war effort gave Canadians a reason to pull together and battle through something as a group. As Canadian units fought together at foreign fronts and won battles that established countries couldn’t win, there was also a sense of pride that went through the ranks of the military and, ultimately, came back home after the fighting ended. The war also pushed production on the home front and helped Canadians modernize. Great Britain obviously did take note of the way Canada came together at war as, despite being told it was going to war, it was able to sign the Treaty of Versailles itself and it wouldn’t be long before it would be granted freedom by statute to decide its own foreign policy. Had those many soldiers not sacrificed their lives, even for gains that seemed to fruitless at the time — barely noticeable to respective commanders back in London and Berlin — it is hard to say where this country would be today. It is also hard to say if different powers may have arisen in Europe and if, ultimately, more people would have been oppressed had history been rewritten. Unfortunately, as the Great War becomes more of a distant memory, it will be harder for people to fathom its importance and the amount of transition that occurred during those years — indeed, it’s difficult to look back now, when few Canadians experienced it. In Europe, stones and monuments make it impossible to forget. One hopes Canadians can find ways to still remember when the links become less tangible. We owe it to those who gave their lives for the cause.

DiscARTed show will take place this October

DiscARTed, the County of Prince Edward Public Library’s popular art show and sale of creations from discarded books, is happening again this year from Monday, Oct. 20 to Saturday, Oct. 25. All artists and creative people to invited to participate. Launched two years ago in celebration of Ontario Public Library Week, past shows have featured wonderful works that delighted and even surprised visitors in their breadth of talent and originality. There were imaginative collages, sculptures - both miniature and gigantic, paintings, furniture, and many other inspired pieces. This year, we are pleased to have artist Vanessa Pandos curating the show and helping with organization. Pandos, a well known and respected glass artist in the community, is owner of Shattered, a studio in Wellington, and a member of the Arts on Main artist co-operative in Picton. The library is fortunate to have persuaded her to get involved with this year’s show. The exhibit and sale will take place, as in past years, upstairs in the Lipson room at Books and Company in Picton. Artists and members of the public interested in taking part in this year’s DiscARTed show are invited to register by e-mail with their name, contact information (both phone number and email) as well as the intended medium and number of pieces to be entered to: crenaud@peclibrary.org. The deadline to register is Oct. 15, but we would appreciate anyone who knows that they would like to enter pieces to please register as soon as possible so we can best prepare. Artworks are to be dropped off in person upstairs at Books and Company on Friday, Oct. 17. Details on times will be available closer to the date. Opening night is Monday, October 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The show

InsIde the lIbrary CHRISTINE RENAUD

continues for one week, until Oct. 25. Participants can collect discarded books now from the library’s used bookstore for free to create their artwork. Simply leave your name with a staff member and tell them that you are taking books for DiscARTed. The artworks are created from books that are beyond selling or are damaged. The library receives a large number of donated books, some of which the library cannot sell. With little space at the library to keep unsellable or damaged books, this is a positive way to extend their life when they might otherwise be destined for the recycling bin. DiscARTed is a joint fundraiser for the library and the PEC Authors Festival with a portion retained by the artist. We are also looking for volunteers to work short shifts at the show and to help in other ways. If you require more information about the show, or would like to get involved, please e-mail me at crenaud@peclibary.org or call 613-476-5962. You may also wish to join the Facebook page for the 2014 DiscARTed Art sho w - creations from discarded books”.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Roads projects are electioneering at work

It seems like County roads are all the rage these days...in more ways than one. My concern is County Road 24...on which an expensive and ultimately botched reconstruction was completed four or five short years ago, around—wouldn’t you know—the time of last municipal election. In fact, the job was done so badly that within a season or so, the road began to disintegrate and its devolution has continued to this day. Which was why I was so pleased to discover, a month or so ago, County Rd. 24 was slated for a rebuild from County Rd. 10 to Army Reserve Road. Few roads in the county need attention more. So, fast-forwarding to today, where do we stand with this reconstruction project? Sadly, we are watching history repeat itself. The whole of what was left of County Rd. 24 needed to be torn up, appropriately banked to funnel water to the road’s shoulders, have a

solid base laid down, and paved...properly...so that it would not have to be attended to in any repetitive or costly way for at least two decades. But this is not what is happening. Perhaps three kilometers of the eight have been ground up and regravelled. Proper banking seems to have been overlooked. At the moment, the new gravel is being pounded flat by traffic. Then, as I have it, the road builders will return and lay down—over the regravelled areas as well as those stretches of pavement that have not been prepped in any way— exactly the same type of road that was laid down last time. So, what’s council’s plan here? Given the timing, it looks like something transparently diabolical. It’s an election year and road work—very visible council-related business—is happening all over the county. Come October, many areas are going to have stretches of brand spanking

new roadway on which voters can drive to the polling stations to vote for the incumbent councillors. Then, the winter will come and, because this roadwork has been done with no eye on the long term, the roads will disintegrate once more and we will be back where we were: enriching the purveyors of alignment and wheel balancing services every four to six months because the potholes are proliferating like rabbits. Athol’s councillor, Jamie Forrester, should have advocated for a different approach to County Rd. 24, where the volume of traffic seems to be increasing each year. Yet he has failed to do so, and his constituents will pay for this failure until the next illstarred rebuild when all County taxpayers will pay...undoubtedly just before the next municipal election. And I gather that what is unfolding on County Rd. 24 is not unique. However, if things work

out as seemingly planned by council, all the hoping-to-bere-elected councillors will be re-elected and installed at Shire Hall for four more years, years during which no substantive roadwork to speak of will be done on County Rd. 24 (or any other such road) save for the filling of numberless potholes. Dare I suggest that this is not planning with the betterment of the County’s road infrastructure in mind. Nor is this good money management. Rather, this is electioneering at work and the optics are horrible. It’s just the wrong way to go about dealing with the roads. So, here’s the thing...have none of our councillors, Forrester included, ever had the benefit of their mothers telling them that it’s wise to think ahead, opt for the best available, and that by investing in quality one gets lasting satisfaction? Youth will indeed be served in the 2014 season of Prince Edward County Festival Players. All For Beaver Hats! is a mad-cap musical comedy romp through the history of the Canadian fur trade featuring the talents of five up and coming performers. An outdoor, one- act performance taking place in several different locations throughout Prince Edward County this month brings recreations of famous characters and places in a time in history when Hudson's Bay Company wasn't just a place to buy a winter coat. Directed by five-year festival players veteran Eliza-Jane Scott, All for Beaver Hats! Provides an important production in a bustling local theatre season where the Festival Players Young Company grow and develop in front of live audiences. “Our cast is comprised of five incredibly versatile actors who do it all‌.including set up and tear down of the set everyday,â€? Scott said. “Three of our members (Rose Boomhower, Brianna Gorsline and Braelyn Guppy) are from the County with two additional actors from Ottawa (James King) and Toronto (Jeremie Cyr-Cooke). They all play a variety of characters and have many costume changes, which can be harrowing at times, given the small truck they perform in and the always muggy weather this summer.â€?

"A good laugh makes any interview, or any conversation, so much better," television journalist Barbara Walters once quipped. Perhaps that’s why David S. Craig’s All For Beaver Hats! contains so many jokes, after all, it is dealing with a pretty ruthless subject in the colonization of Canada. The Festival Players of Prince Edward County Young Company revived the 1981 telling of the fur trade and all of the crazy things people did just to get their hands on fur to make money. The story starts with the tale of Ross and Martin, a member of the English aristocracy and a working class French Canadian guide, who not surprisingly didn’t see eye-to-eye about much, including their canoe passage inland to take Ross to his new trading port.

Interrupting that portrayal of a peculiar odd couple by James King and Jeremie Cyr-Cooke, the cast members move into a fastpaced laugh-a minute highlight show to bring their audience up to speed about the back-and-forth efforts of the French and English to gain prosperity while trading with the natives. It starts with the enthusiastic Champlain (Braelyn Guppy), who didn’t find a route to China and wasn’t the first to find New France, but the one who did manage to get a monopoly to start the fur trade. They also talk about how French Canadian traders Radisson and Groseilliers turned their backs on their own country to help the English form the Hudson Bay company with funds from the King.

The municipality issued a public notice this week advising that construction will be taking place along the Millennium Trail throughout the remainder of the summer. The construction kicks off today and is expected to be completed by mid-September. The construction will involve several different sections of the trail throughout the next few weeks and is part of the larger Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) initiative that will improve and expand high-speed internet access throughout Prince Edward County and eastern Ontario. The project is being managed by Cogeco Cable Canada LP and will enable the installation of fibre optic cable along the trail, bringing with it access to high-speed internet services for residents, visitors, and the businesses of Prince Edward County. Residents will be advised of the ongoing construction through signage placed at the entrance to the affected areas of the trail — whether a notice of the construction or a closure of the trail. Play on Brockville native Shayna Merriam was in town on vacation last week and used the Regent Theatre’s grand piano to ensure her skills were honed leading up to a piano exam this week. (Chad Ibboton/Gazette staff)

Regent Theatre ensures piano student stays in good practice Visiting musician given access to grand instrument to practice for Grade 5 exam Chad Ibbotson

Staff writer

When Shayna Merriam found she'd be on vacation in Prince Edward County the week before an important piano exam, she realized she had a problem. With no piano to practice on in the week leading up to the exam, the Brockville resident said she didn't feel she'd be ready to take on the challenge. “A week without practice without practice would have cost me my exam,” she said. Merriam, who will be entering Grade 11 in September, said she was preparing to take her Grade 5 piano exam. Her mother Elaine said the family was scrambling to get in contact with local music schools who might be able to accommodate the student, but came up with nothing. Without a piano while on vacation, she said a local piano tuner suggested they get in touch with the Regent Theatre, which has a grand piano. The family contacted Regent general manager Bob Schroen and were delighted when Merriam was granted access to the piano for her daily practice. “We've been coming every morning, they even had some tours on and she was playing,” said Elaine. “It was pretty gracious of him to allow us to do this.” Merriam said she's been playing piano most of her life – since about Grade 2. With the exam approaching, she said it was a critical week of practice for her. “It's very important, my exam is next week and I

wasn't ready at the point I was when we came on vacation,” said Merriam. “I needed to prepare myself more.” She said it was nice to play on a grand piano, which she described as “amazing” and said the Regent was provided a great atmosphere in which to play. “It was really great, you could hear it throughout the whole theatre,” she said. “It was a really good place to see how it sounds in different places and to get a feel for playing on different pianos. You don't know what you're going into when you go for an exam, so it's nice to have some different rooms and see what it sounds like.” While Merriam said she wasn't sure if she would pursue music as a full-time career, she said it was definitely a great skill to have. “It'll definitely help me out in the future,” she said. “I'll probably teach lessons on the side.” She said this would be her first piano exam and said it would be good experience toward that goal. “I've taken a violin exam before, but this is my first one for piano, so it's good to get into the experience of exams because I'll need that if I want to be a teacher at some point in time,” said Merriam. She thanked the Regent for their hospitality and for accommodating her practice time, which was about 45 minutes to an hour every day last week. “They were really open and basically allowed us to fit it into our schedule,” she said.

Vines can add vertical appeal to any gardening situation

There are vines for nearly every gardening situation, even for shady spaces. As you think about what you would like to add to your garden next year, I invite you to think about adding a vertical interest by using vines. Boston ivy, Parthenocissus tricuspidata, is a common deciduous vine that we often see growing on masonry structures. It has large green leaves in the summertime and glorious red leaves in the fall. It can grow to 100 feet. It likes partial shade to full sun in a well-drained soil. This plant is a true climber, secreting calcium carbonate which creates holdfast that attache themselves to masonry and wood. These holdfasts will damage mortar and wood and are only removed easily if the plant is severed at the root. For that reason I would only use Boston ivy to cover a chain link fence or a concrete retaining wall (think Wrigley Field). Virginia creeper, parthenocissus quinquefolia, is a relative of the Boston ivy but with differently shaped leaves and a shorter growth habit of up to 80 feet. Less seen but very beautiful is the Ornamental Kiwi, Actinidia kolomikta, v. Arctic Beauty. This is a deciduous, woody vine with variegated large oval leaves of green splotched in white and occasional pink tips. This is a twining type of vine so it needs a trellis for support. The stems are woody and can become very strong so be sure your trellis is a reasonably strong one. This vine grows to 20 feet with a spread of 24 inches. It grows in part sun to full sun and can even do well in a fair amount of shade. If you have a shady spot and are looking for a flowering vine, try climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea anomala. This is a deciduous vine that can grow to 50 feet. In early summer, they produce fragrant lace-cap flat topped white flower heads that can be up to 5 inches in diameter. Climbing hydrangea

climbs via holdfasts so to avoid damage to your structure, construct a trellis a few inches out from the structure for the holdfasts to attach. The stems can become quite large so a sturdy trellis is in order here. This is a slow grower to begin with but when mature can grow quite vigorously and may need occasional summer pruning to keep it in bounds. Plant in well drained slightly acidic soil. The leaves on climbing

hydrangea turn yellowish in the fall. The exfoliating bark is very interesting in the winter landscape. Dutchman ’s pipe, Aristolochia macrophylla is a very large leaved plant that can blanket an arbor or pergola. It produces small flowers shaped like curved pipes that are tinged plum with speckles. Because the flowers are generally found inside the foliage they are not conspicuous. This plant grows in sun, shade and part sun to a height of 8-10 feet and under ideal conditions will grow to 20 feet. It is a host plant to the swallowtail butterfly, attracts birds and is a habitat for beneficial insects. Plant Dutchman’s pipe in moist, well-drained soil and do not let the soil dry out. Fertilize annually in the spring. Dutchman’s pipe can be severely pruned if necessary and will re-grow even more vigorously than before. It is a twining climber and needs the support of an arbor, pergola or fence. A vertical plant in an otherwise flat vista adds interest and pulls the eye upward. Fall is a great time

Tune Your Ride cyclists to roll back into county to perform Four artists plan ride from Brockville to Toronto, stops to sing outdoors chad ibboTson

Staff writer

For a second year a group of cycling musicians will bring their pedal-powered concert to Prince Edward County. The second annual Tune Your Ride Tour travelling music show will cruise through Prince Edward County this month, stopping to perform a show in Picton. The music show takes four artists on a nearly 400kilometre ride from Brockville to Toronto, and kicks off on Aug. 22. The entirety of the tour's travel will be by bicycle with no support vehicle and all the instruments and sound system will be towed by the riders. The tour includes eight bike-powered outdoor concerts in towns along the route, including stops in Kingston, Brighton, and Port Hope. Tour director and Toronto Bicycle Music Festival (BMF) founder James Davis said in a release the performers will be teaming up with arts organizations with similar goals and businesses to bring such events to regions across the province. “We can't wait to hit the road again,” said Davis. “Cycling the Waterfront Trail up the St. Lawrence River and then along the

Lake Ontario shoreline is a great way to explore eastern Ontario.” The tour stops in Prince Edward County on Wednesday, Aug. 27 for a show in Picton's Benson Park from 6–8 p.m. Each of the concerts are free and family-friendly and are powered entirely by bicycle-generated electricity. The performers will ask for volunteer audience members to ride to power the show using a bespoke P.A. Speaker system. Tune Your Ride is an arts collective which presents Toronto's annual Bicycle Music Festival. The 2014 tour showcases four Toronto indie-folk artists and cycling enthusiasts — Abigail Lapell, Jessica Moore, Ben Hermann, and children's entertainer Great James. Lapell is described on the Tune Your Ride website as a folk-noir singer-songwriter, “with a rare talent for evocative songwriting and addictive melodies — along with a crowd-hushing voice, rich in emotional colour.” She has toured across the United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada and has played festivals such as NXNE, Sappy Fest, and Pop Montreal. Hermann is a described as a musician, composer, and audio engineer. He composes and engineers audio for theatre productions and is involved in several different projects. Moore, another singersongwriter, can also play banjo, piano, guitar, and body percussion. She

released a solo album called Beautiful in Red in 2013 and previously released a folk-duo album Charms in 2010. Moore has played across Canada as well as in Texas where part of her album was recorded. James is a Toronto-based acoustic singer and independent recording artist who has performed familyfriendly songs across the country and in Asia. He is described as having been influenced by Pete Seeger, Gord Downie, and Raffi. The musicians will player in Toronto's Dufferin Grove Park on Aug. 22 before heading to Brockville. They will then play in Brockville on Aug. 23, Gananoque on Aug. 24, Kingston on Aug. 26, Picton on Aug. 27, Brighton on Aug. 28, Grafton Aug. 29–31, and finally Port Hope on Aug. 31 For more information on locations and times visit www.tuneyourride.com.

Pirates pick up Storm’s starting goalie Picton acquires Tufts, 16-year-old card from Deseronto for Van Vlack, McCann Chad Ibbotson

Staff writer

The Picton Pirates continued to reshape their club throughout the last week in the lead-up to the 20142015 Empire B Junior C Hockey League season. The club started by filling a hole in net, sending forwards Nolan Van Vlack and Devin McCann to the Deseronto Storm for goaltender Brock Tufts and a 1998 card. A 2013 draft pick of the Belleville Bulls, Tufts played 29 games for Deseronto last season. Picton coach and general manager Ryan Woodward said he sees Tufts coming into the organization and sharing the net in a 1/1A scenario with Andrew Pearson. “We're making an effort here to get younger. Brock is a talented goalie and it's an opportunity for him to continue his pursuit to try to make the Wellington Dukes,” said Woodward. “… It gives us a great onetwo punch in net, more of a 1/1A.” He said coming to the Pirates would give Tufts an opportunity to play with a solid team in front of him and help him continue his development. Woodward said the 1998 card would allow the team to pursue a talented 16year-old player that will help the club with its goal of getting younger. Heading to Deseronto are Van Vlack and McCann. Van Vlack scored five goals and 11 assists for 16 points in 39 games with the Pirates last season. McCann tallied six goals and 11 assists for 17 points in 39 games in 2013-2014. “They're two older player that we want to thank for all of their hard work and commitment to the organization,” said Woodward. “It's an opportunity for both of them to take on bigger roles with Deseronto.” He said Van Vlack and McCann have work commitments in the coming season that may have been an issue for the Pirates, but he said heading to Deseronto will allow them to fill

ComIng south Former Deseronto Storm goaltender Brock Tufts makes a save during a clash with the Picton Pirates last season in Picton. Tufts will be sharing the Picton net with Andrew Pearson this season as the club sent veteran forwards Nolan Van Vlack and Devin McCann to the Storm. The Pirates also added a 1998 card in the deal. leadership roles with that club. “It's an opportunity for them to go to a team that needs some veteran help and some veteran leadership and I expect them both to have big seasons in Deseronto,” said Woodward. Woodward said the pair have been solid teammates for the last couple of years and have accepted any role that's been asked of them, usually providing energy shifts for a talented Pirates

lineup. “(In Deseronto) I think they're going to be leaned on more as scorers,” he said. The club also announced the signing of 1997-born forward Calum Kennelly, who played 19 games for the Pirates last season as an affiliate player. “Calum is a big, strong kid. He's a hard-working blue-collar player and we're expecting him to bring a solid two-way game,” Woodward said.

He said Kennelly has the benefit of having already played some games in the league, and should bring a lot to the club. “He plays physical, drives the net hard, is strong along the wall, and is a great teammate — he brings a lot of attributes we look for in players who come to Picton and I expect him to fit in without any issues,” he said. The Pirates will host their main camp at the Wellington and District

Community Centre on Aug. 17, 19, and 20. Woodward said team is looking for a balance between veteran leaders and young players with skill to fill out the lineup. “We're active, we're looking to get better every day,” he said. “We should probably be announcing one or two more signings here within the week and hopefully more as we head to camp and into preseason.”

The Terra Vista Rockies couldn't quite put it together on Tyendinaga Tuesday night to climb into a first place tie with Danford Contracting in Prince Edward County Men's Fastball League action. A game back of the Frankford-based league leaders, the Rockies put up a good fight against the Enterprise A's in the interlocking portion of the their schedule with the Loughborough Fastball League ultimately falling 6-3. Josh Lockridge was the winning pitcher for the A's while Dale Dowdell took the loss for the Rox. On the B diamond, Whitepine Watershed put the breaks on a three game losing streak, blanking Roblin's Family Plumbing 7-0. Dan Anthony got the win for Whitepine, picking up a five inning shutout while Jamie Thompson had a hit and a run in a three run first inning for the hosts. In the late game, Sydenham had the bats working against the Warren's Excavating Ameliasburgh A's as the visitors blanked the Athletics 6-0. Danford has a one game edge on the pack, leading the league with a 7-4-1 mark. The Rockies are in second place with a 6-5-1 mark. Whitepine's win helped right the ship, pushing them a 6-7 record and within striking distance of both second and first place In fourth, the A's are at 4-4-1 while the Roblin's Family Plumbing Copperheads are in fifth at 3-11-1. Beatty Seeds trail by a single point at 3-10. It should be good action tonight in Picton as Whitepine visits Beatty Seeds in the early game while first place is up for grabs as Danford takes on the Rockies at 8:30 p.m.

Clippers look to put three rep teams on court this fall

If all goes according to plan this fall, Prince Edward County will have three entries in Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) rep ball. “The Under-14 boys was a great success, so we are going to add an Under-12 girls and an U-12 boys team,” said County Clippers coach Rob Garden. The teams will play a season from October to March that will include league play and a number of OBA-sanctioned tournaments. Besides games, the team will typically practice twice a week during the year. The Clippers will be holding tryouts for the

three teams this September at PECI. The Under-14 boys will try out Sept. 10 from 5-7 p.m. and Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. The Under-12 girls and boys will try out Sept. 17 and 28 from 5-7 p.m. and 10 a.m. to noon. Players who successfully make the teams will be required to raise some of their own sponsorship money to play. Registration is also now open for the Clippers’ fall house league for players from Kindergarten to Grade 8. For more details, please see countyclippers.ca. -Staff

Developing artists

YOUTH, from page 9

This weekend, the production takes place at the Henry Leavens Millpond Park in Bloomfield and while these outdoor locations might be a far cry from the Mirvish Theatre, they are the training grounds needed for young thespians to grow. “I am very proud to be a part of this incredible initiative developed by (Festival Players artistic director) Sarah Phillips. Giving young actors and students an opportunity to learn from great artists (they participate in many workshops lead by industry experts at the same time they are performing in the show) and to get paid and develop their vision as artists is incredible,” she said. King said he enjoyed himself so much last year that he wanted to come back to experience all that the county and the company had to offer. “I had an amazing time last year. Eliza-Jane Scott, our director, directed the show last year and it was an amazing experience. She was part of the reason I wanted to come back.” King said he had some concern that it may be different with three new cast members, but that was quickly put to rest. “They’re fantastic,” he said. “We’ve created a bond and it has been wonderful.” Following the summer, King will return to the audition trail in Toronto with a bit more experience to offer. Guppy, a Moira grad, isn’t about to go into theatre as a career, but she said knowing cast members last year, she couldn’t pass up the chance to be involved. “I know people who had a blast. They recommended I send in a resume and do an audition and here we go. It’s amazing people with amazing direction... it’s just a great company. We all get along so well.” For ticket information and showtimes, visit festivalplayers.ca/2014-season. -With files from Adam Bramburger

The Picton Gazette Words cannot express appreciation for the all the thoughtfulness from family, friends, neighbours, Women’s Institute family who have helped us out after my accident. Cards, phone calls, visits, flowers, food delivered to our house, housecleaning, Quinte Access, Bayshore Homecare, for looking after me. Thanks Dick for everything, thanks from the bottom of my heart, Joan Williams.

With Heartfelt Thanks

Although we are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear wife and mother, we the family of the late Isabel Mowbray realize that we have so very much to be thankful for. To the healthcare professionals, who were responsive to Isabel’s changing needs over the last few months and guided us through each new challenge; to the CCAC and Red Cross staff who made it possible for Mom to stay at home with her caring husband Roy in the place that she loved the most and to her family, friends and neighbours who responded in so many wonderful ways to bring joy to Isabel as she bravely accepted each new hurdle. To the nurses at QHC, Belleville and Picton who provided compassionate care after her fall and to the entire staff at Hospice Prince Edward who brough such comfort and care to our entire family during Mom’s final journey here on earth. We are forever changed by Mom’s end of life experience and we are very grateful to live in a community that so generously supports this compassionate service to its residents. As well, our thanks to the dedicated and caring staff at Whattam Funeral Home who assisted and supported us in providing a special celebration of Isabel’s life. We also wish to thank Rev. Kirby and Leslie Breithaupt for their continuous support to our family through prayers, food and friendship, and specifically for Rev. Kirby’s part in the funeral service. A special thank you to Rev. Jim Cullen and our dear Lori Burke for their kind words and participation in the service as well. And to the Demorestville Women’s Institute, Isabel’s dear friends and fellow sandwich and cookie makers for the past sixty years; our sincere thanks for the exceptional luncheon provided after the service. It was wonderful to have your special touch added to the day. The overwhelming number of cards, emails, phone calls, visits, food delivered to us with warm hugs and the generous charitable donations, all reminded us that Mom had touched many lives over her lifetime and her efforts to nurture those friendships and serve her community came back to us tenfold during this time. We will miss Isabel so very much as she gave unconditional love and support to so many and brought such joy to our lives. We would ask in memory of Mom that whenever you think of her, that you pass one a kind word or deed to someone who might need a helping hand. The Mowbray and Camp family

Brewery ad collectors meet in Kingston Food Not Bombs offers three free meals The community is invited to share in free community meals at Benson Park in Picton on three occasions this month. On Aug. 10 at noon, Aug. 13 at 5:30 p.m. and again on Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m., Food Not Bombs will be serving tasty meals made from our local harvests. Anyone with extra produce in their garden is also invited to bring it for “crop sharing” as part of The Really, Really Free Market. “This is a time of year when many have more produce than they can use in their gardens, so this is a chance to share the bounty and bring it for others to take home,” says one of the Food Not Bombs crew, Christine Renaud. Hri Neil of Ombudsman

Have you been holding onto some old, limited edition beer bottles thinking they may be worth something some day? Maybe you have a bottle cap collection, or some posters from when Labatt or Molson sponsored Gold Cup races sitting in your basement. If so, you could be in luck this weekend. The Collectors of Canadian Brewery Advertising (CCBA) are having their 35th annual conference at Kingston’s Ambassador Hotel this week and Saturday, the public will be invited to swap and sell products. “It’s not about the beer itself, it’s about the label,” said Allan Dodd, president of the Limestone Brewerianist Club, which is hosting the event for the third time this year. “If people have stuff in their basement they want to trade, sell, or find out about, this is the place to be,” Dodd said. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, there will be a buy, sell, and trade session. Oodd indicated he’s seen a wide range of activity from the sale of a small individual article, to the liquidations of whole collections for thousands of dollars. He indicated that if a collector isn’t sure about the value of the branded pieces they have, the members may

Sound, who has been providing great music to the meals since last summer, will be on hand for the first two meals. On Aug. 27, food will be served prior to the free Tune Your Ride Concert. The family-friendly show starts at 6 p.m. All meals are weather permitting. Food Not Bombs works to build community, raise awareness of food insecurity and share vegetarian meals in public spaces in a welcoming, all inclusive atmosphere. The events are made possible by a loose and changing collective of individuals. Anyone interested can help organize, cooking, serving, setting up and cleaning up. The group also welcomes donations. Spreading the word about the meals is

something everyone can do. “The meal on Sunday, August 10 will mark one year, almost to the day, since the first PEC Food Not Bombs meals,” says Renaud. “Our first meal was August 11, 2013 and we’ve served almost 40 meals since, many of which were Free Soup Fridays at the Picton Library over the winter.” Everyone is encouraged to come out, bring a friend, a blanket and, if possible, a plate, cup and cutlery, though these are provided. Anyone interested in helping out or with any questions can e-mail: pec.foodnotbombs@gmail.com or join the Facebook group “Food Not Bombs in PEC”. -Contributed

start an auction to ensure they get fair value. While Dodd himself is a regular visitor to Prince Edward County, he notes local connections to the national conference do run fairly deep. He said his chapter has several members from the area, including a West Lake resident who has been collecting for more than 25 years. There is also a connection between the conference and the Barley Days Brewery, west of Picton. Twice, the CCBA has recognized the craft brewery

with label of the year honours for its promotion of local history and art. Barley Days won for its Royal George Brown Ale label depicting a Peter Rindlisbacher painting of an 1812 battle on Lake Ontario at last year’s convention in Winnipeg and it also claimed the prize in 2009 for its seasonal May Bock, featuring a Manly MacDonald painting of a horse-drawn work wagon. Barley Days is also involved with the conference again this year, serving its products at a hospitality suite for CCBA members.

Cast uses many comedic devices in story HISTORY, from page 9

ESSO Fuels new tools Early trading made for some uncomfortable moments when the Hurons, like Jeremie Cyr-Cooke, learned about guns from the likes of Samuel de Champlain (Braelyn Guppy) (Adam Bramburger/Gazette staff)

who didn’t understand her and had to learn of his death through one of the men applying to work in the fur trade (Rose Boomhower). King said he enjoyed the script because through those highlights the cast could rely on a shared understanding of history to be able to communicate and have some fun with the audience. “Some of the humour is almost Vaudevillian, you can be tongue-in-cheek toward the audience,” he said. “The last part is more earnest, but a lot of it was high-energy and cartoony.” Ultimately, the show came back to the tale of Ross, Martin, and Martin’s native wife for some reflection about how the English, French, and Natives viewed their roles in the fur trade and how their attitudes

might have changed. The hard attitudes faded — almost melodramatically — and an uneasy peace carried forward through the show. It also provides some great physical comedy aboard a fictional canoe. It was just enough to be poignant, yet still keep the laughter the playwright and the company worked so hard to fit into the show. King said he believes the show represents a good way to teach or review history. “When we were first reading the script, I was saying ‘I remember this’ or ‘I remember that.’ It brings us back to our roots. It’s fun to remind kids of that and more of a fun way to learn than a history class.” Ultimately, it all comes back to the comedy and pacing bringing the story to life.

Renamed as Gooseberries and Radishes by a rather effeminate king, they built a very successful company. The back-and-forth continued as the French developed the concept of voyageurs to meet the native traders before they got to Hudson Bay, and the English ultimately gained control by force as Quebec City fell. Some of the comedic highlights also show the lethargic work of some of the British left at trading posts when Governor George Simpson came on board. A strong ensemble cast, the members of the Young Company pulled off the fast pace and the stream of different characters with ease. Through comedy, including some slap stick positioning, thick accents, costume changes (which were difficult in sweltering heat), and musical interludes — some narrated by a singing, dancing beaver — the cast was able to show the differences very effectively. They also allowed time for some tender and solemn moments, coloured over by the comedy. In some instances, the men noted to their wives they’d return home in a short time of just a few years. In one instance, a pregnant girlfriend actually went trading with her beau, showing off some peculiar traits for her commander. In another touching scene, a baker (Cyr-Cooke) went off to join the militia to defend Quebec, leaving his wife (Brianna Gorsline) behind. Eventually, the wife began working for an Englishman
