Spruce up your garden for a quick home sale this spring If selling your home is on your agenda for spring, you’ll want to spruce up your garden before popping up a “for sale” sign. Landscaping and flowers can boost your home’s curb appeal and increase its saleability in turn. To help you kick-start your spring garden, the Ontario Real Estate Association and your local Realtor offer the following pointers.
CLEAN UP AND MAKE A PLAN
After a long winter, the first step will be to clean up your yard, planters and flowerbeds. Next, take the time to plan your garden before buying flowers and shrubs. Your local garden centre can help you choose a combination of perennials, shrubs and annuals that will provide continuous colour throughout the entire growing season and into the fall. Many will even provide landscape
design services free of charge provided you purchase the plants from them. Keep in mind that garden centres are busy at this time of year, so it’s a good idea to bring along a sketch of what you want your garden to look like. Consider sunny and shady areas of your yard and think about a colour scheme, varying heights and widths of plants and blooming schedules as well as where you might like to grow some vegetables or herbs. If you don’t consider yourself a green thumb, creating a colourful garden is still within reach. There are plenty of places to turn to for tips and advice. For example, your local library or bookstore will have a variety of gardening books and magazines filled with examples. The Internet is also a good place to check for gardening ideas. You’ll know it’s time to start on your spring garden once you see tulips and other spring bulbs come into bloom

leaves to replenish food reserves for next year’s flowers. • Plant summer flowering bulbs such as Freesia, Gladiolus, Dahlias, Lilies and Anemonies. • Plant annuals and vegetables once all risk of frost has passed. A well-planned and maintained landscape with beautiful spring flowers will beautify your home and increase its appeal with potential buyers.
