Introduction to Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients

API- active Pharmaceutical ingredient is an active part of pharmaceutical drug or pesticide. In most of drugs, there are usually two different kind of chemical ingredients, One is inert part of drug called excepient and another is active ingredient called API. For any disease, the remedy is chosen based upon the type of active ingredient used in it. Sometimes active pharmaceutical ingredients need cofactors in order to achieve particular effects on body. In such cases, ingredients need to be combined with other active ingredients as they are efficient only when combined with some particular elements. Sometimes the mixing up of multiple different APIs can create unwanted conflicts and side-effects on patients body too. In herbal medicines, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients are made up by combining several different substances which work as an API when mixed perfectly together. There are several different & standard methods for calculating relative strength of various APIs inside the drug. These methods vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Unless & untill the proper amount of active pharmaceutical ingredients in mixed up within medicine, it won't be as efficient as it was supposed to be ideally. Chlorhexidine digluconate solution, Cetylpyridinium chloride & cetrimide are most popularly used Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients which you will know about in the further portion of this document.

Cetrimides: Cetrimides have great antiseptic properties which makes them widely used in skin injuries like minor burns, cuts, grazes, nappy rash etc. Having effective anti-fungal & anti bacterial characteristics, it is used in anti-infection creams & powders. However cetrimide doesn't produce side effects on patients, patients with allergic nature can suffer from hypersensitivity reactions due to it. Cetrimide is also used as an ingredient of shampoo and antiseptics to treat

psoriasis & seborrhoea. For sore gums, you can apply a very dilute solution of cetrimide to soothe it. Cetrimide is used in forms of sprays, creams, liquids etc and also used as disinfectant solution to clean surgical instruments. It provides an efficient antiseptic cover by destroying cellular structure of many microorganisms. In comparison to other acidic agents, Cetrimide causes much less skin irritation when topically applied.

Chlorhexidine digluconate solution: Chlorhexidine digluconate solution is transparent, water-like liquid with odours like menthol & peppermint. It can be used as active pharmaceutical ingredient in combination with excipients like Hydrogenated Polyoxyl Castor Oil, Ethanol(96%), Aspartame E951, Menthol, Peppermint oil & purified water. Chlorhexidine digluconate solution is widely used in antiseptics & disinfectants. It is effective against a wide range of bacteria, some fungi & some viruses too. In commercial ophthalmic products, it is used as antibacterial agent as replacement of thimerosal which is a mercury-containing bacteriostat. In recent years, it has been replaced in ophthalmic preparations by methyl phydroxybenzoate/ methyl paraben or other paraben esters due to sensitivity on skin. Its use as a dental disinfectant has led to discoloration of teeth and gums.

Cetylpyridinium chloride: Cetylpyridinium chloride is disinfectant or antiseptic agent . It is used widely in dental care products like mouth fresheners, throat sprays, breath sprays, nosal sprays, lozenges , mouth wash, toothpastes etc. It is clinically proven to prevent plaques and reduce gingivitis . Due to its antibacterial properties , it is also used in some pesticides
