DOUBT (15) Director: John Patrick Shanley. Starring: Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams. USA 2008. 104 mins.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

27 - 31 MAR

The winds of change are sweeping through a tight-knit religious community, and charismatic priest Father Flynn is doing his best to adapt by revisiting the school's notoriously strict disciplinary practices. Unfortunately his progressive ideas stand in stark contrast to the longstanding beliefs of Sister Aloysius Beauvie. Into this tempestuous environment appears young Donald Muller, the school’s first black student. When Sister Beauvier hears that Father Flynn and Donald have been spending a lot of time together, she begins a merciless crusade to reveal the clergyman as a child molester. A powerful depiction of persecution.

THE CLASS (15) Director: Laurent Cantet. Starring: Juliette Demaille, François Bégaudeau, Wei Huang, Franck Keita. France 2008. 130 mins. French with English subtitles.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

27 MAR - 2 APR

Based on the bestselling novel Entre les Murs by former teacher François Bégaudeau, the latest film from Cantet demonstrates his social and ethical conscience and his mastery of compelling human dramas. François and his fellow teachers prepare for a new year at a high school in a tough Paris neighbourhood. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his teaching methods. One of the most deserving Palme d’Or winners in the history of the Cannes Film Festival, THE CLASS gently teases out tensions and issues within the classroom, examining without didacticism and with extreme objectivity the various challenges the pupils and teachers face. Absolutely enthralling and utterly essential.

TWO LOVERS (15) Director: James Gray. Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow, Vinessa Shaw. USA 2008. 110 mins.

Picturehouse Recommends

27 MAR - 9 APR

Gray’s fourth film takes place in the Brooklyn neighbourhoods that have characterised all of his work, but TWO LOVERS is more intimate than his crime movies such as THE YARDS and WE OWN THE NIGHT. Leonard has moved back in with his parents after a relationship ended in heartbreak. He is depressed and lonely, so his parents try to set him up with Sandra. But when he meets Michelle (Paltrow), a beautiful and volatile woman who has recently moved into the block, his head is turned. As Michelle begins to expose her secrets to him and Sandra reveals hidden depths, Leonard struggles with his conflicting emotions. With TWO LOVERS, Gray has delivered a credible and romantic drama of some distinction. Michael Hayden, The Times BFI London Film Festival

THE DAMNED UNITED (15) Director: Tom Hooper. Starring: Michael Sheen, Timothy Spall, Jim Broadbent, Colm Meaney. UK 2009. 98 mins.

Picturehouse Recommends

Peter Morgan’s (FROST/NIXON) brilliant adaptation of David Peace’s novel tells the confrontational and darkly humorous story of Brian Clough’s doomed 44-day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football in the 1970s, Leeds United. Previously managed by his bitter rival Don Revie, and on the back of their most successful period ever, Leeds had an aggressive and cynical style of football. This was anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Brian Clough, who had achieved astonishing success as manager of Hartlepool and Derby County building teams in his own vision with trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor. The performances are riveting, with Sheen and Meaney excellent as Clough and Revie respectively.

NOTORIOUS (U) Director: Alfred Hitchcock. Starring: Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Louis Calhern. USA 1946. 102 mins.

+ introduced screening 29 mar see page 11 for details.

From 1 Apr

Graced with passionate performances and featuring one of the greatest onscreen kisses in cinema history, this classic romantic espionage thriller is amongst Hitchcock’s very finest. At the end of World War II, American military intelligence drafts the alluring daughter (Bergman) of a convicted Nazi to infiltrate a band of nefarious Germans who have fled to Brazil. She is teamed with a dashing but chilly agent (Grant) with whom she falls deeply in love. Because of her past, however, the rigid and judgmental agent refuses to trust her - and their relationship falls apart completely when she agrees to marry the ringleader of the Germans in order to have better access to information. Suspenseful to the very end, the film has been beautifully restored by the British Film Institute.

THE BOAT THAT ROCKED (15) Director: Richard Curtis. Starring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost. UK 2009. 132 mins. The new comedy from Curtis (LOVE ACTUALLY), centred on the British pirate radio revolution of the '60s, largely takes place in a rusty fishing trawler moored off the coast of England. In 1966, arguably British pop music's finest era, the BBC played only two hours of rock and roll every week. But pirate radio blasted rock and pop from the high seas 24 hours a day. And 25 million people listened to these pirates every single day. An ensemble comedy in which the romance takes place between young people and pop music, the film also concerns a band of rogue DJs who captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and stood up to a government that, incomprehensibly, preferred jazz.

3, 4 & 6 - 9 Apr

VALKYRIE (12A) Director: Bryan Singer. Starring: Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson. USA/Germany 2008. 121 mins. In a totalitarian state in the grips of evil where justice and honour have been subverted, a group of men inside the highest reaches of power decide to take action. Director Singer (SUPERMAN RETURNS) brings to life the true story of the men who tried to assassinate Hitler. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is a loyal officer who serves his country while hoping that someone will stop Hitler before Europe and Germany are destroyed. Realising that time is running out, he decides to take action himself and joins the German Resistance. With a cunning strategy to use Hitler’s own emergency plan against him, von Stauffenberg is thrust from being one of many who oppose Hitler to the one who must kill Hitler himself.

3 - 9 Apr

three monkeys (15) Director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Starring: Yavuz Bingöl, Hatice Aslan, Ercan Kesal, Yavuz Bingol. Turkey/France/Italy 2008. 109 mins. Turkish with English subtitles. THREE MONKEYS is a gripping and tightly wound psychological drama. Politician Servet has caused a car accident, and he persuades his driver, Eyüp, to assume responsibility in return for a considerable sum. While Eyüp is in prison, his wife becomes involved with Servet, and the couple’s teenage son must carry the weight of their secret. Eyüp’s release functions as an unleashing of past indiscretions and various family deceits, desires and anxieties. All too soon the fractured family find themselves entangled in an increasingly complex web of subterfuge. Weaving a carefully calibrated maelstrom of violence, moral decay and ruined lives, this is a potent, perfectly executed work.

GRAN TORINO (15) Director: Clint Eastwood. Starring: Clint Eastwood, Christopher Carley, Bee Vang. USA 200. 116 mins. Eastwood’s first acting performance since MILLION DOLLAR BABY, GRAN TORINO is another distinguished entry into the director’s series of films that ponder violence, its place and its cost. Decades after the Korean War, veteran Walt Kowalski is still haunted by the horrors he witnessed. The two objects that matter most to Kowalski are the classic Gran Torino that represents his happier days working in a Ford assembly plant, and the M-1 rifle that saved his life during combat. When his East Asian teenage neighbour attempts to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski discovers that the only way to lay his painful memories to rest is to face his own blinding prejudice head-on. Impeccably directed and performed, the film confirms Eastwood as perhaps the greatest living talent in American cinema.

MILK (15) Director: Gus Van Sant. Starring: Sean Penn, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna. USA 2008. 128 mins.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

10 - 16 Apr

In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into major public office in America. His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum. From senior citizens to union workers, he changed the very nature of what it meant to be a fighter for human rights before his assassination in 1978. MILK charts the last eight years of Harvey Milk’s life. Penn is on superlative form in the title role giving a nuanced, understated performance that perfectly captures the man’s humanity and humility.

PARIS 36 (Cert TBC) Director: Christophe Barratier. Starring: Gérard Jugnot, Clovis Cornillac, Kad Merad, Nora Arnezeder. France/Germany/Czech Republic 2008. 120 mins. French with English subtitles. From the director of THE CHORUS comes an equally charming musical comedy about a group of performers who stop at nothing to keep the magic of theatre alive. 1936, a suburb to the northeast of Paris. The springtime election of a left-wing government brings new hopes, but also sees the rise of extremist ideas. As the film opens, mounting debts at the neighbourhood music hall mean the proprietorship passes to the local mob boss, who promptly closes it down. Depressed and running out of money, newly-unemployed stagehand Pignoil and his friends Milou, a proud idealist, and Jacky (Merad), a flawed comedian, decide to stand up to the mobster, occupy the theatre and return it to its glory days.

BOTTLE SHOCK (12A) Director: Randall Miller. Starring: Alan Rickman, Bill Pullman, Chris Pine, Freddy Rodriguez. USA 2008. 109 mins.

+ wine tasting event thu 16 apr see page 19 for details.

In 1976, a small American winery bested the exalted French wines of the time and sent the wine industry into a tizzy - putting Californian wines on the map for good. Based on a true story, BOTTLE SHOCK chronicles the events leading up to the famous ‘Judgment of Paris’ tastings, told through the lives of father and son, Jim and Bo Barrett. Jim (Pullman) had sacrificed everything to realise his dream of creating the perfect hand-crafted chardonnay. His business, however, is struggling. Meanwhile in Paris, British wine shop owner Steven Spurrier (Rickman) hopes to revive his own failing business by sponsoring a competition to pit the traditional French powerhouses against the Californian upstarts. Little did the men know that they were on course to change the history of wine forever. Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex and drug references.

IN THE CITY OF SYLVIA (PG) Director: José Luis Guerín. Starring: Xavier Lafitte, Pilar López de Ayala, Laurence Cordier, Tanja Czichy. Spain 2007. 85 mins. French and Spanish with English subtitles. The pleasure of people-watching is raised to the level of high art in this dreamy, ravishing study of one man's pursuit of lost love, a delightful film whose apparent airiness is anchored by real substance. A pensive young writer (played by angel-faced Lafitte) glimpses a woman he once knew, and follows her, desperate to revive their liaison from years before. But does she remember him? Did he really know her at all? And is he really looking for her, or will any beautiful woman do...? Festooned with gorgeous faces, drenched in melancholy romance, and extraordinarily sophisticated in its visual and narrative style, this is a treat for all of the senses.

good (15) Director: Vicente Amorim. Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Jason Isaacs, Jodie Whittaker, Gemma Jones. USA 2008. 96 mins. GOOD, which is based on the acclaimed play by C. P. Taylor, stars Mortensen (APPALOOSA) in an extraordinary change-of-pace role as John Halder, a good, decent individual with family problems. A German literature professor in the 1930s, Halder explores his personal circumstances in a novel advocating compassionate euthanasia. When the book is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda, Halder finds his career rising in an optimistic current of nationalism and prosperity. Yet with his change in fortune, his seemingly inconsequential decisions potentially jeopardise the people in his life with devastating effects.

IN THE LOOP (15) Director: Armando Iannucci. Starring: James Gandolfini, Tom Hollander, Chris Addison, Anna Chlumsky. UK 2009. 106 mins.

Picturehouse Recommends

24 - 27 Apr

Directed by master satirist Iannucci and written by the team that brought you The Thick of It, IN THE LOOP is a razor-sharp political comedy. The US President and British Prime Minister fancy a war. The British Secretary of State for International Development, Simon Foster, disagrees. But when he accidentally backs military action on prime-time TV, he suddenly has a lot of friends in Washington. If he can get in with the right D.C. people, if his entourage of one can sleep with the right intern, and if he can stop the UN vote being rigged, he can halt the war. If he can’t... well, he can always sack his advisor, whom he never liked anyway. The film pulls no political punches and is both pertinent and wickedly funny.

ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL (15) Director: Sacha Gervasi. USA 2008. 80 mins. After the likes of Spinal Tap and Penelope Spheeris mined the world of heavy metal for comedy and insight so memorably, who would have bet that Canadian band Anvil would be the subject of a film that not only deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the metal movie greats, but also breaks new ground in this territory? Formed in Toronto by two school friends, Anvil drifted into obscurity following limited success in the early 1980s. Now in their 50s, the two men are still dedicated to following their rock dreams, even as each glimmer of encouragement they get is being snuffed out. Gervasi is allowed incredible access to the band, portraying their eccentricities, anxieties, confrontations and meltdowns with frankness, but never without affection. Michael Hayden and the London Film Festival

FLASH OF GENIUS (12A) Director: Marc Abraham. Starring: Greg Kinnear, Dermot Mulroney, Lauren Graham, Alan Alda. USA 2008. 119 mins. Kinnear stars in Abraham's man-against-the-system docudrama as inventor Robert Kearns, the visionary who developed the modern intermittent windshield wiper. Kearns submitted his invention to the big car companies, each of which promptly rejected it; they then turned around and put the device to use. The enraged inventor spent several decades attempting to collect on his patent, and mounting lawsuits that travelled all the way to the Supreme Court. Co-scripted by Scott Frank from an article that originally appeared in The New Yorker, FLASH OF GENIUS is an engrossing and beautifully performed David vs Goliath tale. Contains one use of strong language.

FLAME & CITRON (15) Director: Ole Christian Madsen. Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Thure Lindhardt, Stine Stengade. Denmark 2008. 136 mins. Danish and German with English subtitles. Copenhagen, 1944. Denmark is under Nazi occupation. Resistance fighters Flame and Citron work undercover for the Holger Danske group performing acts of sabotage and liquidating informers. Unified in their hatred of enemies of freedom, the younger, idealistic Flame dreams of openly taking up arms against the occupying power, whereas the more sensitive Citron is drawn to the politics of resistance. When Flame is commanded to execute his girlfriend Ketty, a courier, he questions his orders. The story is based on true events, with much of the plot and dialogue developed from eyewitness accounts. Avoiding the clichĂŠs of the genre, Madsen brings a piercing freshness of vision coupled with a real sense of history. Sarah Lutton, The Times bfi london film festival

24 -30 Apr

GENOvA (15) Director: Michael Winterbottom. Starring: Colin Firth, Catherine Keener, Hope Davis, Willa Holland. UK 2008. 94 mins. GENOVA has an immediacy and truthfulness that draws us into the story of a family trying to rebuild itself after a tragic event. Firth plays Joe, a lecturer who takes a job in the Italian town of Genova, seeing it as a fresh start for him and his daughters following the death of his wife. Sixteen-year-old Kelly starts to explore her new world. Meanwhile her younger sister Mary is haunted by nightmares and she begins to see her mother walking in the streets. Winterbottom shoots the film largely hand-held, using real locations and available light. The lack of artifice shines through, not least in the wholly believable performances. Martin McGartland is a small-time hustler working in late-Eighties Belfast. He is recruited by a complex, wily intelligence agent to feed information about Irish Republican Army activities to the British. With every success, he intensifies the danger posed to himself and his family. The IRA is ruthless in its retribution once it learns of an infiltrator: he becomes a “dead man walking”. But McGartland finds the grip of his relationship with the agent both hard to shake and secretly comforting. Inspired by McGartland and Nicholas Davies' book, Kari Skogland captures the character of Northern Ireland in the Eighties with great sensitivity and precision, reflecting both the despair and the personal toll of the conflict.

From 1 May

A fragile, anxious boy, 12-year-old Oskar is regularly bullied by his classmates. His wish for a friend comes true when Eli moves in next door. A pale, serious girl, she only comes out at night and doesn’t seem affected by the freezing temperatures. Coinciding with her arrival is a series of inexplicable disappearances and murders. For Oskar, who is fascinated by gruesome stories, it doesn’t take long for his imagination to take flight. But by then a subtle romance has blossomed between the two, and she gives him the strength to stand up to his aggressors. Alfredson weaves friendship, rejection and loyalty into a disturbing yet poetic and unexpectedly tender tableau of adolescence.

IS ANYBODY THERE? (12A) Director: John Crowley. Starring: Michael Caine, Bill Milner, Anne-Marie Duff, David Morrissey. UK 2008. 95 mins. Edward lives in a rambling hospice for the aged, where his parents are the managers. Surrounded by the elderly, he is fascinated by death and what happens afterwards. With the arrival of the bitter, burned-out Clarence, Edward's interests take on an entirely different dimension. An ex-magician who has stopped practising, he is barely able to tolerate the young whippersnapper. But soon they are drawn together as outsiders trying to make sense of the world. Full of wit and wisdom, this film confronts death and the hereafter with humour and honesty. Contains one use of strong language and suicide references.

THE GENESIS OF CONTEMPORAY CHINESE CINEMA, BY CHRIS RODDEN

Rarely has a nation’s cinema had to operate under so many political and cultural restraints as that of mainland China. Yet, since 1984, Chinese films have exploded onto the international scene. In this illustrated talk Rodden traces the influences, both political and artistic, that have determined its path. Ideas of tradition, identity, censorship and Western influence are considered as we examine the cinematic image China presents to the world as it imposes itself upon the global economy. Chris Rodden is the Film Programmer for Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

Spring is upon us, the evenings are drawing out and our covered medieval courtyard is open. To celebrate, on Sunday 3 May we will be showing off our new selection of fantastic wines and offering complimentary nibbles in the courtyard and The Bar. We will have live music in the courtyard and in Screen Two we will screen the classic comedy SOME LIKE IT HOT, starring Marilyn Monroe (see page 11). BOTTLE SHOCK WINE TASTING EVENT Our series of wine and film evenings continues on Thursday 16 April at 7.00 with an evening dedicated to one of the landmark events in the history of wine! The evening will consist of a screening of the award-winning BOTTLE SHOCK (12A), which tells the story of the famous Paris tasting of 1976, when wines from the then little-known Napa Valley in California were pitted against some of the titans of French wine in a blind tasting. The Californian wines won! (See page 5 for film review). Preceding the film will be a re-enactment of that famous tasting, using a range of carefully selected modern wines from both regions, in which guests will be able to make their own decisions about who makes the best wines! Tickets cost ÂŁ20 for Members and ÂŁ22 for non-Members, and are available from the Box Office.

SPECIAL OFFER On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings throughout April we are offering a free glass (175ml) of house red or house white wine, or a soft drink, to any customer ordering a main course from The Dining Rooms Menu* after 8pm. Please bring this voucher with you. *Offer does not apply to pre/post theatre menu or to bar snack menu.
