MARYHILL COMMUNTY GARDEN Pidgin Perfect worked with Maryhill Integration Network to develop a design strategy and garden structure for the Maryhill Community Garden space. This is an aesthetically pleasing, ambitious and aspirational community garden space designed through conversation with the end users and local groups, including those who use the Maryhill Community Centre as a base. The strategic design was developed as a masterplan for the community garden to be grown over phases in line with funding access, ensuring continual community involvement in the process of design and production. The garden design creates a high quality permanent, mobile and adaptable planting, seating and storage elements that have a clear and simple aesthetic drawn from, and clearly identifiable as Maryhill. Planting includes a wide variety of flora, including sensory elements: smell, taste, sight and touch. The garden introduces seasonal and year round planting elements, enabling an annual programme of workshops and skill sharing as well as an interesting and pleasant outdoor space all year round. This will help promote the local urban ecology including birds, urban animals and a wide variety of insects and other creepy crawlies.

GATEWAY : MERCHANT CITY ART PROJECT Pidgin Perfect were shortlisted for the Merchant City Public Art Lighting Project from a highly competitive list of architects and public artists. Our proposal, on which we collaborated with our good friends Icecream Architecture, highlights Glasgow Cross as a ‘gateway’ between the Merchant City and the East End of Glasgow. The site on which the railway bridges traverse the Gallowgate and London Load at Glasgow Cross has been a gateway to the city since medieval times. Our Gateway celebrates that transition from East End/Merchant City and Merchant City/East End. Glasgow Cross has been an epicentre of Glasgow life since the sixteenth century, it marks the original heart of the city. In bygone times, it was a meeting point for trade, civic duty, municipal welcome, onward journey and social importance. It was centre stage in the hosting of major civic events and was regularly shrouded in colour and opulence to highlight its significance. Gateway proposes to attach large neon signs to the railway bridge to highlight the history, flavour and character of the area through the use of the Glaswegian colloquialism. Gateway echo’s the tongue in cheek signposting which is found in the area and signposts what is now a key gateway to the current Merchant City. Using the railway bridges that cross both London Road and Gallowgate the proposal will blur the boundary and celebrate the meeting of a diverse group of communities.

PIGEON HOLES : MERCHANT CITY ART PROJECT Pidgin Perfect were shortlisted for the Merchant City Medieval Garden Art Fence Project from a highly competitive list of architects and public artists. Our proposal, on which we collaborated with our good friends Icecream Architecture, centred around a ‘living fence’ which promoted relationships and interactions . Medieval trade often consisted of people exchanging goods rather than paying money, to the extent that trust enabled people to leave items to be collected at a specified location without ever having to meet face to face. Pigeon Holes is an interactive addition to the planned Medieval Garden at George Street that enables people to interact with others in the city in a way inspired by medieval trade; becoming a self regulating swap shop, public notice board showcase for public art, as well as providing a comfortable vantage point on the garden. Pigeon Holes is intended to be a focal point for the community so there will be integrated seating within the lattice grid catering for the scale of children and adults making the ‘living wall’ suitable to all ages. In addition the overhang of the living wall will provide some shelter making the garden habitable even in the rain.

THE SHILLING GROUND Pidgin Perfect were asked by Glasgow Housing Association to develop an artistic response to The Shilling Ground, a public space in Pollokshaws, Glasgow. Originally used for ‘winnowing’ - sorting the wheat from the chaff - The Shilling Ground is a key location in the changing community of Pollokshaws as it reminds many residents of the historical context of their environment as it goes through a process of regeneration. Pidgin Perfect have, over the last eighteen months been developing relationships and an in depth understanding of the area through previous consultation projects, and felt that a public realm artwork on this site would have to respond to the built and remembered heritage context within Pollokshaws. The ‘Pollokshaws Compass’ highlights and connects the viewer to their surroundings providing information about local heritage landmarks, with further information in the existing Pollokshaws Heritage Trail. The design is currently under consulation in the wider community of Pollokshaws.
