POWER OF A POSITIVE ATTITUDE A balanced diet, exercise, genetics, and even certain medications can work in concert to make a person healthy. But a person’s demeanor also can factor into personal health. The Mayo Clinic says that whether or not a person is an optimist or a pessimist can affect many areas of his or her health and well-being, and those who see the glass as halffull may ultimately be healthier than those who see it as half-empty. Positive thinking can make it easier to manage stress. The body responds differently based on an individual’s mood, and it may produce stress hormones if a person’s outlook is negative. Such stress hormones can compromise the immune system, increase blood pressure and even reduce the body’s ability to burn fat effectively. Thinking negatively and being on edge also can increase a person’s risk for developing cardiovascular disease and aging prematurely. Conversely, maintaining a positive attitude can be good for your health. Studies have shown that thinking positively can lower rates of depression and anxiety, increase life expectancy and provide greater resistance to certain illnesses, such as the common cold. A 2012 preliminary study from researchers at Stanford University found that daughters of mothers suffering from depression were able to witness their own stress levels go down on a real-time brain scan as they switched from negative thoughts to happy ones. Researchers are unsure why positive thinking has such profound effects. But in addition to limiting stress-releasing hormones, positive thinking may inspire people to live healthier lifestyles that make them more likely to get routine physical activity and eat a healthy diet. Happy people also may be less likely to use tobacco products or alcohol as a coping mechanism when dealing with elevated stress levels, and such people will not have to deal with the side effects that can come with these unhealthy behaviors. Becoming a more positive thinker can take a little effort for those without a natural inclination for optimism. But because positive thinking boasts such significant health benefits, men and women might want to try the following methods to embrace their optimistic side. * Exercise. Start an exercise regimen, as physical activity naturally reduces stress and can improve mood. * Embrace humor. Surround yourself with others who bring a smile to your face. Look for ways to laugh as much as possible. Rather than go out to dinner or a bar with friends, head to a comedy club. Choose comedies at the movie theater and find humor in everyday happenings. * Identify areas that need change. Think about moments in life that may bring you down or inspire negative reactions. If work is problematic, figure out ways to make it better and work toward improving the situation. * Be supportive of yourself. Consider what you would say to others and then treat yourself the same way. Would you be overly negative or derogatory toward a complete stranger? Probably not, and there is no reason to be harsh with yourself, either. Push negative thoughts away. * Volunteer. One way to see the world in a more positive light is to help others who may be less fortunate than you. Volunteering not only helps others, but it also can help you put your own problems in perspective. Volunteering also helps you feel good about your efforts, which can translate into positive thinking. * Think like a child. Take a cue from youngsters and find joy in the little things. Let children be the leaders in activities and mimic what they do. You just may find yourself laughing more and enjoying yourself. Being silly for a little while is one way to recapture the feelings of youth. Positive thinking is more than the subject matter of self-help books. It’s a viable way to improve personal health and live longer.

Harvest Jubilee announces new concert series Danville Harvest Jubilee recently announced the creation of Covers at the Crossing, an all-new concert series. Slippery When Wet; the Ultimate Bon Jovi Tribute Band will headline the first show on May 2 at the Carrington Pavilion with special guest Dirt Road Scholars. All tickets cost $7 and will be available at the gate. The gates open at 6:30 p.m. Slippery When Wet was formed in 2003 by Jason Morey, who was often asked if he was Bon Jovi. Morey was even mistaken for the New Jersey icon at a Dave Chapelle show and was invited back stage. RUBY SLOAN Ruby Sloan went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 15, 2015, after a hard fought battle against declining health for several years. Mrs. Sloan will be remembered for her unconditional love as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all as well as for her faith, compassionate spirit and the joy she brought to others by her random acts of kindness. Known for her dedication to her faith she was a long time member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Mrs. Sloan was born on September 18, 1927 in Jackson County, NC, the daughter of Frank and Laura Hyatt. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Berkley “Buck” Sloan and was the beloved mother of three children: Millard Sloan and wife, Cheryl of Providence, NC; Brenda Jean Sloan

and fiancé Dan Smith of Raleigh, NC and Douglas Wayne Sloan of Ontario, Canada. She had three grandchildren: Brandon Sloan and wife, Andrea of Wendell, NC; Ryan Sloan of Raleigh, NC and Laura Sloan Stigall and husband, Matt of Lexington, KY. She also had two greatgranddaughters, Kelsey and Kiley Sloan. WILLIAM “BILL” MATTHEWS KIRBY William “Bill” Matthews Kirby, 89, of 2408 Ridge Road, Danville, died on Sunday, April 19, 2014 at Abington Place after being in declining health for the past couple months. Mr. Kirby was born in Bessemer City, NC on July 19, 1925 son of the late Roy Kirby and the late Janie Mauney Kirby. He spent most of his life in the Danville area where he worked as a postal clerk for the US Postal Service. He proudly served his country in WWII on the USS Otis in the US Navy. He was a charter member of United Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Gideons. Mr. Kirby was married to the late Gloria McCain Kirby. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, James Kirby and Ned Kirby. GARLAND WINFORD WEAVER On April 13, 2015, Garland Winford Weaver, Sr., age 89, of 408 Brentwood Dr. Danville, Va. went home to be with his Lord and Savior. Mr. Weaver was born February 18, 1926 in Spray, N.C. to the late Posey and Rosa Belle Hill Weaver. He was a faithful member of Tree Of Life church where he served as a Deacon, Head Usher and was on the Board of Trustees; he was also a member of the American Legion Post 325. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Jenks and participated in the historic capture of the German sub U505 on June 4, 1944. He worked for Pet Dairy for 33 years prior to his retirement and also sold refrigeration appliances for 20 years. Garland loved woodworking, gardening and riding Harley Davidson motorcycles and was active in missionary work and traveled abroad. Garland was never happier than when he was surrounded by his family. Sundays were extra special for him, as the family always gathered at his home to share a meal and time together. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 66 years, Loraine Ingram Weaver; his sons, Garland Winford Weaver, Jr. (Kathy); Ricky J. Weaver (Pam Kingery); and daughter-in-law, Terri N. BOBBY W. WATKINS Bobby W. Watkins departed this life peacefully surrounded by loving thoughts from his family near and far to go to walk with his immediate family, friends and dogs who had gone on before him. Watkins (Cheetah), his sister Pauline Roberts and a nephew James Compton. Bobby lived most of his life in Ringgold, VA and the last 12 years in Gretna, VA. He was employed by Disston in his younger years before starting his own businesses, S & W Drywall and S & W Apartments. He worked as a contractor doing home improvements until his retirement due to disability. He loved working with wood, spending time at Leesville Lake, and being with his dogs throughout the years. Myrtle enjoyed her home at Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach, SC which she graciously shared with her family for many years. She lived most of her life in the Vance Community where she was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and attended Cannan Primitive Baptist, the last few years she lived in Virginia. She was a weaver in Dan River Cotton Mills in her younger years and was later employed by the Pittsylvania County School System, where she worked until her retirement in

1982. Due to ill health Mr. and Mrs. Arnn moved to Leesburg in 2006 to live with their daughter and son-in-law. Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Smith (John); two grandchildren, Lynn Smith (Susan) and Laura Cloud (Tony); four great-grandchildren, Luke Smith (Heather), John Ashby Smith, Connor Cloud and Kyle Cloud all of Leesburg, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Betty A. Ward (Bobby) of Daniels, West Virginia and a Brother-inLaw, Gene Arnn (Maudie) of Biloxi, Mississippi. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a daughter, Connie Jo Arnn and two brothers, Irvin and P.D. Green. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tunstall Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 575, Danville, Virginia or to your favorite charity. No Bake Strawberry Cake 2 pounds fresh strawberries, washed 3 1/4 whipping cream, divided 1/3 cup confectioners suger 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon rosewater (optional) 4 sleeves (24-28 whole crackers) graham crackers 2 ounces dark chocolate, finely chopped.

Add the confectioners sugar, vanilla, and rosewater (if using) and whip to combine. Spread a small spoonful of whipped cream on the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking pan, or a similarly-sized platter. Lay down six graham crackers. Lightly cover the top of the graham crackers with more whipped cream, and then a single layer of strawberries. Repeat three times, until you have four layers of graham crackers. Spread the last of the whipped cream over the top and swirl it lightly with a spoon. Add a few more strawberries. To make the ganache, heat the remaining 1/4 cup cream until bubbles form around the edges, then pour over the chopped chocolate. Let it stand for a few minutes, then whisk until the mixture is thick and glossy. Drizzle this over the layered dessert with a spoon, or transfer to a squeeze bottle and use that to drizzle. Refrigerate for at least four hours, or until the crackers have softened completely. Garnish with additional berries.
