Robert Brandon Hankins

Robert Brandon Hankins, 27, of 927 Millsville L a n e , d i e d , Monday, June 8, 2015 at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital in Richmond, VA after a sudden decline in health. Brandon was born in Danville, VA on June 14, 1987, the son of Pennie Marie Mills and Robert Charles Hankins and wife Dawn. Brandon spent his life in Danville and Pittsylvania County where he graduated from Tunstall High School, Class of 2005. He worked as an Electrician and was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to his parents he is survived by a step-sister, Ashley Dunaway, of Keeling, VA and paternal grandfather Walter S. Hankins of Danville and maternal grandmother Eleanor “Dee Dee” Mills also of Danville. He was predeceased by a paternal grandmother Carol A. Hankins and maternal grandfather Fred R. “Jimmy” Mills. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 11:00 AM from the Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Homes Westover Chapel conducted by the Rev. Austin Merricks. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday night from 7:00-8:30 PM at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his father Robert C. Hankins and wife Dawn, 493 Robertson Lane, Danville, VA, 24540 and at the residence of his mother Pennie Mills, 889 Moorefield Bridge Rd., Danville, VA, 24540. Pauline Bray Davis

Pauline Bray Davis, 85, died on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after being in declining health for several months. She was born on November 27, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, VA, daughter of the late James Arthur Bray and the late Anna Myrtle Bray. She spent all of her life in

the Pittsylvania County and Danville areas where she was a homemaker. She loved flowers and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Mrs. Davis married William Clyde Davis, who died on March 25, 1987. Survivors include, two sons, Ronald Davis and wife Francine of Danville, VA and Roger Davis of Danville, VA; two daughters, Cindy Manley and Esther Poole and husband Larry, both of Myrtle Beach, SC; two brothers, Roy Bray and Charles Bray; a sister, Gracie B. Shelton; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, six step grandchildren, and seven step great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by a daughter, Shelia Elaine Davis, a son, Earl Victor Davis, and two brothers, Buck Bray and Oliver Bray. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Duane Blevins officiating. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday night from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Doris Irene Hutchinson Hankins

Mrs. Doris Irene Hutchinson Hankins, age 88 of 231 S o u t h R i d g e Street, A p t . # G 0 2 , d i e d Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for several months. Mrs. Hankins was born on October 5, 1926 in Guilford County, N.C., a daughter of the late Walter Hutchinson and the late Blanch Roberts Hutchinson. She had lived most of her life in Danville. She was a member of the Tabernacle. She was married to Gordon Stewart Hankins, who predeceased her on March 12, 2002. Karen Sue Cassell

Karen Sue Cassell, more commonly known as “Nana”, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 12, 2015. She and her husband of 42 years, Harley Mac Cassell Jr., resided at 1108 Greenwood Avenue in Danville, Virginia. Nana was born on January 11, 1946 in Somerset, Pennsylvania. She is preceded in death by her mother Pearl Marie Engleka and her father Jack Felix. She lived most of her life in Danville, VA. She was of the Christian Faith and used her gift of service to always help others. She enjoyed spending time with her family and close friends. Her immense compassion, deep dedication to family and comedic sense of humor will be greatly missed by all. Karen is also survived by two daughters, Tina Marie Will and partner Matt Box of Savannah, GA and Angela Sue Cassell and Jessica Mears of Charleston, SC, three sisters Donna L. Coleman of Danville, VA, Linda K. Rizak of Pennsylvania and Margaret A. Sage of Danville, VA, two grandchildren Ashley N. Will and Aaron C. Will , two great grandchildren Aiden Harley Branegan and Ashton Lee Roberson. Patsy Mae Brumfield McClanahan

Patsy Mae Brumfield McClanahan, 83, of 319 Cathy Drive, Danville, VA died Friday, June 12, 2015 at D u k e Hospital after a decline in health for the past three months. Mrs. McClanahan was born in Danville, VA on March 15, 1932 a daughter of the late Berkley Howard Brumfield and Callie Giles Brumfield. Mrs. McClanahan was a homemaker and was a member of the Saint Lukes United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working in her yard and flower garden which won City Beautiful Award seventeen times. On February 8, 1957, she married George Thomas McClanahan who survives. In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, Tim McClanahan, and wife, Brenda, and Rick McClanahan, and wife Tammy, both of Danville, VA; three grandchildren, Katie, Zach, and Tyler McClanahan; and a brother, B.H. Brumfield, Jr. She was predeceased by her brother, James Howard Brumfield, and a sister, Rebecca Crabtree. Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 15, 2015 at 11:00 AM from Highland Burial Park conducted by the Rev. Tilden Bridges. Tommy Kemp Thornton

Tommy Kemp Thornton, 80, of 7788 Kentuck Road, Ringgold, Virginia, died June 12, 2015, at his residence. He had been in declining health for several years. Mr. Thornton was born July 10, 1934, a son of the late Clyde Albert Thornton and Hilda Barker Thornton. He had spent his entire life in the Kentuck community, and was a rural letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and farmer prior to retirement, and enjoyed fishing. He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church, Kent Masonic Lodge # 305 A.F. & A.M., and Kentuck Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Thornton served his country in the U.S. Army. He was married to the former Betty Ann Myer. Surviving is his wife Betty Ann Myer Thornton of the residence, daughters, Sherry T. Miller, Charlotte, NC, Darryl T. Patterson and husband Ronnie of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Tommy Kemp Thornton and

wife Sharon, Ringgold, VA, two sisters, Melba T. Collie and husband John and Hilda T. Booth, of Ringgold, VA, grandchildren: Erica Looper, Scott Miller, Christina Coates, Nathaniel Merian, Shannon Merian, Marcus Thornton, Landis Thornton and Wesley Thornton and five greatgrandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers and sister: George Albert Thornton, Olin Corbin Thornton, Willie Lemuel Thornton, Eugene Lee Thornton, Lacey Melvin Thornton, and Anna Mae Thornton. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock from Kentuck Baptist Church, with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Naomi Gale Ricketts Kidd

Naomi Gale Ricketts Kidd, 73, of 4 7 0 0 M t . Cross Road, died on Friday, June 12, 2015 at her residence after being in declining health for several years. Mrs. Kidd was born on April 23, 1942, daughter of the late Harold Edward Ricketts and the late Della Mae Kirks Ricketts. She spent all of her life in the Danville area where she graduated high school from Whitmell Farm Life School; then she graduated from Averett University with a teaching degree and went on to continue her education by getting her master’s degree in teaching from Virginia Tech. While at Averett University she was in the Who’s Who of American Colleges. She then went to work at Dan River High School as a Chemistry and Biology teacher, until her retirement in 2008. She was a charter member of Timberlake Baptist Church and was a member of the Toastmasters International. Mrs. Kidd was married to the late Bob Kidd. Survivors include, a brother, Warren D. Ricketts of Danville, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special puppy “Mitzi”. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by a brother, Garland Ricketts. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Timberlake Baptist Church with the Reverend Walter Yancey and the Reverend Daniel Custer officiating. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park. Lawrence Alphonso Toller

Lawrence Alphonso Toller was born M a r c h 21, 1949 in Pittsylvania County, VA, a son of the late Houston B. Toller and Geneva Carnese Toller, who survives. He was married to Ella W. Toller, who survives. Lawrence was educated in Pittsylvania and Henry County School system, upon graduation from Southside High School in 1966 he attended Danville Community College. Lawrence joined the Bethel United Way of the Cross Church under the pastorate of Apostle Joseph H. Adams. He was instrumental in setting up the sound room and worked in this ministry as long as his health allowed. Lawrence and his wife, Ella resided in Lynchburg, VA. They were the first AfricanAmericans to purchase a radio station programmed to service the African-American audience in the Danville area. Lawrence was affiliated with the following organizations and groups; Past Board Member of Danville Community Improvement Council, Former Chairman of the Danville Housing Board of Appeals Housing and Adjustments, Past Board Member of Danville Salvation Army, Past Board Member of Goodwill Industries of Danville and Halifax County, Former member of River View Rotary, Former member and Past President of the Optimist Club of Danville Served on Committee of African-American Council to President of Danville Community College and Executive Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of City of Danville. He is survived by his wife, Ella W. Toller; his mother, Geneva Toller of Chatham, VA; daughter, Dynelle Lunsford of Portsmouth, VA; brother, Bennett Toller (Rozenia) of Danville, VA; two sisters, Kathleen Toller of Danville, VA and Paulette Toller of Chatham, VA; two stepchildren; Maurice Williams and Sharon Williams; five grandchildren; Marchelle Patterson, Ajiona Lunsford, Alonzo Lunsford, Mia Williams and Justin Spears; three great grandchildren: Markelle Patterson, Toni Patterson and Mason Spears; father-inlaw, Bishop Alon Coleman; sister-in-law, Dee Toller and a host of other relatives and friends. In additio to his father, he was predeceased by two brothers, Leon Toller and Jeffrey Toller. Thomas Mabin, Jr.

Thomas Mabin, Jr., 69, of 2514 Bennie Dr., Ringgold, VA, died, Monday, June 8, 2015 at the Danville Regional Medical Center. Born May 22, 1946 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Thomas Mabin, Sr. and the late Margaret Lockett Smith. He was married to Mary Wilson Mabin, who survives. In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Jackie Mabin of Roanoke, VA; three sons, Thomas Mabin, III (Kellie) of MN, Jimmie Mabin (Monica) and Darryl Mabin (Tarsha), both of Danville, VA; one sister, Margie Miller (Charles) of NJ; one brother, Murray Smith of NJ and a host of other relatives and friends. Annie Laura DeShazor, 81, of 135 C o l e man St., Danville, VA, died, Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the Danville Regional Medical Center. Born September 2, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Annie Adams Beck. She was married to the late Ozonie DeShazor. She was the last survivor of her generation. Survivors include five daughters, Hilda DeShazor, Nancy Beck, Blanch DeShazor, Freda DeShazor and Sandra Wilson all of Danville ,VA; two sons, Willie DeShazor and Leon DeShazor, both of Danville, VA and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one son, Curtis DeShazor; five siblings, Louise Beck, Juanita Hamm, Lassie Fitzgerald, Estelle Smith and Edward Beck. Mr. John “Lenwood” Jones, age 75 of 135 Sutherlin Avenue died Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past year. He was born in Pittsylvania County, VA on April 8, 1940, a son of the late John Robertson Jones and Annie Elder Jones.

Howard Douglas “Doug” Gravely, 58, passed away at his residence, Tuesday, June 09, 2015. He was born on April 11, 1957 in Pulaski, VA to Elizabeth Faye Gravely and the late Howard Gravely. He is predeceased by two brothers, Franky Gravely and Randy Gravely. Doug attended Wayside Pentecostal Holiness Church and was an employee of Asplundh Tree Company. He worked in construction for many years. Mr. Gravely is survived by his wife, Gloria “GG” Gravely of the home. Linda Alice Trueblood

Linda Alice Trueblood, 61, of Martinsville, VA passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born on September 4, 1953 in Washington, DC “Adopted By” the late Jesse Paul Trueblood and Marie Meyers Trueblood. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Howie Trueblood. Linda graduated from James Madison University and Pinecrest Bible Training Center. She was a teacher at Marc Workshop and later taught Special Ed in Henry County. She was also an ordained minister. Ms. Trueblood was a founding member of Martinsville Christian Fellowship (Later named Wellspring Fellowship). She went on several overseas mission trips. One of her most memorable experiences was smuggling bibles into China. member of Trinity Baptist Church, Martinsville, VA and was very active in church affairs. She retired from E.I. DuPont after forty years of service. Lisa Gail Harris, 53, of 597 Childress R o a d , Ringgold, Va. died Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Lynchb u r g General Hospital, Lynchburg, Va. She was born July 15, 1961 in Danville, Va. to the late Zelma Reid Harris and the late Bobby J. Harris. Ms. Harris was a graduate of Danville Christian School in 1979 and was a member of Central Blvd. Church of God where she worked with the Kidz Quake Ministries and was co-director of the Dream Team and Children’s Ministries. She was “Ninnie” to many children and friends. Left to cherish her memory are nephew Daryle Wayne Harris, Jr. and wife Cynthia, niece Shauna H. Adkins and husband Jason, greatnephew, Andrew R. Adkins, sister-in-love Wanda H. Compton, and an uncle, Rev. Arthur Harris and wife Judy, all of Danville. She will also be remembered by a number of special cousins, God-daughters Nikki Spencer, Ashley Spencer and Meredith Spencer, as well as special friends Pam Spencer, Kay Morris, Scott and Wanda Spencer, Sandra Adams, Mike and Joy Bates and Jerry and Dawn Anderson. Joel Andrew Marlowe

Joel Andrew Marlowe, 66 of Danville, Va., died Sunday, June 14, 2015 at his residence w i t h his loving family at his side. Mr. Marlowe was born August 11, 1948 in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County, Va. to the late Frances Johnston Marlowe and the late Andrew Marlowe. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Holder Marlowe of the residence. Mr. Marlowe graduated from Chatham High School and was a member of County Line Christian Church and a past member of the Moose Lodge, Elk Lodge, Woodmen of the World and Sertoma Club. Prior to his retirement he worked with Piedmont Automotive as the General Manager. He distinguished himself by coaching Mickey Mantle and Connie Mack baseball in the mid-1970’s. After the retirement of Loose Wells, he assumed the position of Commissioner of American Amateur Baseball Congress, representing the State of Virginia. During the 1980’s, Mr. Marlowe was elected to serve as President of Pittsylvania County Youth Baseball and served as East Zone Director for Pony League Baseball until the mid1990’s. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, DeDe Turner of Mebane, NC; Kimberly Jones Cerwonka and husband Nathan of Pampa, TX; Haley Elizabeth Marlowe of the residence; and Andrea Jones of Danville. He is also survived by a sister, Brenda Marlowe Wade of Floyd, Va., two brothers, Gerald Marlowe of Dry Fork, Va. and Wesley Marlowe of Chatham, Va., and a father-in-law, Eugene Holder of Danville. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 2500 Westover Drive, Danville, Va. at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, June 16, 2015 with Minister Hershel Stone and Pastor David Bell officiating. Mrs. Eanes was born on May 18, 1918 in Franklin County to the late Bessie Davis Wingfield, and Thomas Otis Wingfield. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Haley Eanes, sisters, Della Barbour, Henrietta Cooper and Fairy Wingfield Reynolds Smith, brothers, Fred Wingfield, Louis Wingfield and Russell Wingfield. Surviving is her sister, Nancy Wingfield of Snow Creek, VA, nephew, David Reynolds and wife Phyllis of Martinsville, VA. Also many other nieces and nephews. Lottie was a member of Clear View Baptist Church. She retired from Tultex after twenty years of service. After retirement she worked at Clear View Wesley Church Day Care. He was born in Patrick County on December 11, 1940 to the late George Chaney and the late Callie Hall Chaney. He was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Hallie Chaney, Doris c. Foley, Christine Dodson, James Dillard Chaney, Harold Chaney, Lacy Chaney and Rosabelle Chaney. Haywood was a former employee of Stanley Furniture, was of the Baptist faith, enjoyed playing and listening to bluegrass music and loved his dog, Jake. He is survived by his special friend and companion of 36 years, Maxine Chaney; two daughters, Janet Lee Chaney Brown and fiancé, Chris Williamson and Hallie Marie Chaney Deane and husband, Michael all of Danville; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Estelle Cannaday of Martinsville; his favorite nephew, Kenny Foley.
