Fun Facts About America’s National Anthem July 4, 2015 marks the 239th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Fireworks will illuminate the night sky, the rich smell of barbecue will be in the air, and the country will be awash in red, white and blue splendor. Chances are the swelling melody of “The Star Spangled Banner” will be broadcast over the radio and on various firework display telecasts. The national anthem is synonymous with the United States America, and its notes very well may be the patriotic glue that binds the country together. Although the lyrics and music of the song are widely known, many may be unfamiliar with the rich history behind the beloved tune. A poem is born America began its fight for independence from Great Britain in 1775, and the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776 to identify the 13 colonies that succeeded in winning their independence from Britain. However, the battles with Britain stretched on. Fights over territories kept disputes between the British Empire and the newly formed United States raging on, and it was during one such fight, and not during the Revolutionary War as some may think, that “The Star Spangled Banner” was written. The War of 1812 was declared by the United States to set right some of the issues that were not resolved after the Revolutionary War. Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer at the time of this war, negotiating for the release of an American hostage being held by the British. Although Key won the hostage’s release, he was not able to leave the British fleet where the negotiations took place until the British completed their attack on Baltimore. Key witnessed the British fiery bombs on Ft. McHenry at Chesapeake Bay. Just before dawn on the morning of September 14, 1814, Key was said to have noticed a huge American flag still waving above Ft. McHenry in defiance to the British attack. This imagery helped inspire the words of a poem that eventually would become the national anthem. Key penned the poem on the back of a letter he held in his pocket. After the battle was over and Key was released, he completed the poem at the Indian Queen Hotel, where he was staying. The poem was titled, “Defense of Fort M’Henry.” The poem was put to music to fit the popular melody “The Anacreonic Song” by English composer John Stafford Smith. Key’s brother-in-law, Judge Joseph H. Nicholson, anonymously made the first printing of the lyrics to the melody, and the song was printed in two newspapers. The song quickly became popular, and soon after, Thomas Carr of the Carr Music Store in Baltimore, Maryland published the words and music under a new title, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

EMAIL A woman is sitting at a bar enjoying a drink with her girlfriends when an exceptionally tall, handsome man enters. He is so striking that the woman can not take her eyes off him. The man notices her overly attentive stares and walks directly toward her. “The Star-Spangled Banner” takes off “The Star-Spangled Banner” became one of the nation’s most beloved patriotic songs in the 19th century. According to Smithsonian, the song gained special significance during the Civil War, a time when many Americans turned to music to express their feelings for the flag and the ideals and values it represented. The military used the song for ceremonial purposes, requiring it be played at the raising and lowering of the colors. But many versions of the song were used during these ceremonies and celebrations. By the 20th century, President Woodrow Wilson wanted to establish a standard version, so he tasked the United States Bureau of Education to provide an official version. In response, the Bureau of Education enlisted the help of five musicians, including Walter Damrosch, Will Earhart, Arnold J. Gantvoort, Oscar Sonneck and John Philip Sousa, to agree on an arrangement. This new standardized version was first played on December 5, 1917, at Carnegie Hall. It wasn’t until March 3, 1931, that “The Star-Spangled Banner” became the official national anthem of the United States when President Herbert Hoover signed this designation into law. This Fourth of July, people may be struck by the magnificence of the fireworks or the enjoyment of the parades. But as the music swells, they also can think about the significance of the events that inspired the creation of the country’s national anthem.
Congratulations to Kaitlyn Scearce and “Apple” (Shady Knoll Stables) who received the Blue Ribbon in the Novice Equitation Class at Chestnut Hills this past weekend! Way to go!
Before she can offer her apologies for rudely staring he leans over and whispers, “I’ll do anything, absolutely anything that you want me to do for $20. But only on one condition.” Flabbergasted, the woman asks what the condition is. “You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words.” The woman considers his proposition for a moment and then removes a $20 bill from her purse, which she presses into the man’s hand along with her address. She then looks deeply into his eyes, and slowly, and meaningfully says, “Clean my house!”

Just another NASCAR debate BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper In a season-long debate over rule changes in the middle of the season, and whether the Confederate flag should be allowed to fly at NASCAR events, along comes the never-ending debate as to whether a driver who misses nearly a third of the season be allowed to compete in the Chase, a 10-race format that determines the Sprint Cup championship. Kyle Busch fueled the fire somewhat Sunday when he won the Toyota/Save Mart 350 Sprint Cup race in California. He must average a 14th-place finish in the next 10 races to be eligible for the championship. “You’ve certainly got to play it out all the way through,” Busch said. “That’s one thing I haven’t been so good at over the years. You’ve got to have that focus for not just one week but for a long time, and 10 weeks is a long time. We’ve just got to do our job, both (crew chief Adam Stevens) and I. We can’t screw up.” A point to be made is this. If a driver can become Sprint Cup champion without competing in every event, then what is the value of the season’s first 26 races that sets the field for the Chase? I’m not a favorite of the Chase format. NASCAR waived the requirement that a driver must compete in every race to make the Chase field, and that, too, wasn’t the right thing to do. I don’t make the rules, so I don’t have a dog in this fight. I’m not pointing a finger at Busch. NASCAR ruled he’s eligible for the Chase if he wins a race and finish 30th in points. In my book, that makes the Chase more and more irrelevant. Another debating point is the fact that Busch was injured in an Xfinity race. I argue there are consequences you must pay if you decide to race in one of NASCAR’s lower levels. Pick your priorities, but if you race outside of the Sprint Cup schedule and get hurt don’t expect NASCAR to rewrite the rule book to allow you to race for the championship. Busch is currently 37th in the points and another poor outing will make the debate a moot point. But Busch is thinking differently. “The team is good enough to be in the Chase, and I should be good enough to be that way,” he said. Yes, the Busch team is good enough to be in the Chase, but having to rewrite the Chase rulebook to get there is another question. NASCAR and the Confederate flag: CEO and Chairman Brian France told the Associated Press over the weekend that NASCAR will aggressively try to separate itself from the Confederate flag. Guess what? NASCAR is now in the flag business. France said the flag was an “offensive symbol” and NASCAR would do whatever they could to eliminate the presence of the flag. He said the flag was associated with bigotry and racism and was frequently used as a symbol by white supremacy groups. What the flag symbolizes has come under fire following the June 17 slaying of nine AfricanAmericans inside a Charleston, S.C., church. France did not go as far to say NASCAR would work to prevent fans from displaying the rebel flag at its tracks. If it’s offensive to any race, it belongs in the history books. I know what the flag stands for me. What I don’t know is what it stands for the other guy that may fly the Confederate flag. But butt out NASCAR and let each of us decide this issue ourselves. “The Natives Are Restless” One of the oddest accounts of Scripture is found in Mark 14:51-52. It occurs just after Jesus has been arrested in Gethsemane. We read “And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him: And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.” This is recounted only here in the gospel of Mark. None of the other three gospels mention it, none of the Old Testament prophesies of it, none of the rest of the New Testament alludes back to it. It seems to be a very personal item to the writer himself, something that does not help or hinder everything else going on around it. Right in the midst of the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus, it stands out as an oddity. But there is no filler material in the Bible, everything is there for a reason.
1. Is the book of 2 Timothy in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. From Luke 6, what did Jesus tell His disciples to do to those who cursed them? Smile, Walk away from, Laugh, Bless them 3. What instrument did David play for Saul that caused the evil spirit to depart? Drum, Harp, Tambourine, Flute 4. From John 3, who lifted up the serpent in the wilderness? Paul, Peter, John the Baptist, Moses 5. What horrible things did Ezekiel see filling a valley? Serpents, Locusts, Dry bones, Demons 6. Who was the father of James and John? Zebedee, Nahum, Haggai, Hizkiah ANSWERS 1) New; 2) Bless them; 3) Harp; 4) Moses; 5) Dry bones; 6) Zebedee Comments? More Trivia? Visit www.TriviaGuy. com (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
The main mystery concerning this account has always been the identity of the young man. A bit of “Bible CSI” work gives us enough evidence, I think, to name our suspect with very reasonable certainty. Here are the facts we are given. One, this was not one of the remaining 11 apostles, all of them had fled in fear one verse earlier. Two, this was, though, at least a nominal follower of Christ. Verse fifty-one says that the young man was following “him,” Jesus. Three, this was someone who lived in Jerusalem, and was from a wealthy family. This garment he had hastily thrown about himself was a sindon, an extremely expensive piece of linen, something no one from the middle or lower classes could afford. Four, when things got scary, his response was to run. Five, this is recounted for us as eyewitness testimony! All of the other apostles were gone, so the only person there to see all of this was the writer of the gospel himself, a man who fits every description given above, John Mark.
Mark’s mother had a large enough home in Jerusalem to hold a multitude of believers. He followed Christ, which led him to join in a missionary journey with Paul and Barnabas. When they faced opposition, he ran home. Later, though, he grew up enough that Paul called him “profitable to me for the ministry.” He grew up so much, in fact, God used him to pen the gospel that bears his name, where he, seemingly embarrassed at the memory, recounted his night time flight when Jesus needed him most. This young man was given something rare and precious, a chance at greatness for God. All of the prominent people, the apostles, were running for their lives. He had come into the garden at some point along the way, perhaps roused from sleep by the noise of the band of soldiers. When others ran, he followed for a few steps more. But when the soldiers assumed him to be a follower of Christ and grabbed him, he ran. He could have gone down in history and eternity as the man who followed Jesus all the way, but he ran. Opportunities for greatness for God do not come in moments of peace and ease, but in moments of danger and fear. Is a teacher or professor mocking God in front of a class scared into silence? There is your opportunity. Does someone have a need that God is moving you to step out on pure faith and help with? There is your opportunity. Has the Macedonian call come your way, beckoning you to the mission field? There is your opportunity. Has the Master summoned you away from a lucrative career to pastor a church? There is your opportunity. If you run, you will leave more than an expensive piece of clothing behind, you will leave an opportunity that may never come your way again.

Fireworks Have a Colorful History
Happy 4th Of July From The Piedmont Shopper Crew! Celebrate AMERICA!!!!!
Independence Day celebrations are marked by many spectacles. But few can garner the “oohs and aahs” of a good fireworks display. Summer is a time of year when the resonating booms and bright spills of color that dot the night sky are quite common. Fireworks, which can be traced back thousands of years, have an interesting history. Many historians believe fireworks originated in ancient China as early as 200 B.C. It is thought that early fireworks were not the gunpowder-filled explosives of today, but something made from bamboo, a material native to China. Chunks of bamboo, a thick, fast-growing grass, may have been tossed onto a fire as fuel. The rods would blacken, but eventually explode in the fire, causing a loud, frightening noise. This noise was a result of trapped air and sap inside of the bamboo rods heating and expanding until the bamboo exploded under the pressure. The exploding bamboo was used to ward off animals, other people and evil spirits. Chinese alchemists eventually stumbled on a recipe for basic gunpowder, mixing together saltpeter (potassium nitrate, then a common kitchen seasoning), charcoal, sulfur, and other ingredients. This powder was packed inside of hollow bamboo rods to produce an even bigger bang. Soon paper tubes replaced the bamboo, and fireworks were used for more than just scaring away spirits, as they were routinely included in special celebrations and even deployed during military engagements. Fireworks may have begun in China, but they were soon being used around the world. Italians had been fascinated with fireworks ever since the explorer Marco Polo brought back firecrackers from Asia in 1292. During the Renaissance in Europe, the Italians began to develop fireworks into a true art form. Since this was a period of artistic creativity and expression, many new fireworks were created. “Firemasters” were fireworks experts in medieval England. They worked with “green men,” who wore caps of leaves to protect themselves from raining sparks from the fireworks. In 1758, the Jesuit missionary Pierre Nicolas le Cheron d’Incarville, living in Beijing, wrote to the Paris Academy of Sciences about the methods and composition of fireworks, including how to make many types of Chinese fireworks. The world remains fascinated by fireworks even now. Fireworks displays have grown more elaborate over the years, requiring the skills of pyrotechnic experts, carpenters and digital sound masters. Various powders and chemicals mixed together produce a rainbow display of colors and aerial tricks that would likely have shocked the earliest firework creators. Not forgetting its origins, China continues to produce and export more fireworks than any other country in the world. Safety experts recommend the public leave fireworks to the professionals and sit back and relax during awe-inspiring pyrotechnic displays. As the United States and Canada prepare for their respective Independence Day celebrations, flashy fireworks displays are bound to be part of the festivities.

Researchers tested this by having participants swap back and forth at 18-week intervals. * It was the polyphenol antioxidants in cocoa that helped because of the antioxidants -- there are more in chocolate than in red grapes, cranberries or blueberries. The polyphenols cause the blood vessels to open, lowering blood pressure. * A study of men and women who’d had a heart attack showed that chocolate cut the risk of dying from heart problems by nearly 70 percent. Eating chocolate even once a week still cut the risk in half. So while the new research isn’t 100 percent certain in its conclusions, there appears to be something in chocolate that’s good for us. While we wait for scientists to isolate what it is, ask your doctor if adding a bit of chocolate to your diet is a good idea -- just in case. Also ask your doctor to suggest an amount, to err on the side of caution.
When a study comes out showing that chocolate is good for our health, chocolate lovers rejoice. Now a new study has more good news: Even milk chocolate qualifies. The study in the British journal Heart tracked 20,000 participants for nearly 12 years. Its conclusion? A higher intake of chocolate reduced the risk of cardiovascular events: 11 percent lower for cardiovascular disease, and 25 percent lower for associated death. High intake of chocolate resulted in a 23 percent lower risk of stroke. The bonus: Most of the participants ate milk chocolate, not the allegedly healthier dark chocolate. In years past, the chocolate health studies have said: * Dark chocolate (not milk or white) helps to (c) 2015 King Features lower blood pressure. Synd., Inc. Clean up A messy, untamed front yard can detract from a perfectly acceptable home. Cleaning up your yard and home’s exterior is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to give the place a makeover. Cut back overgrown shrubs, plants and trees. Make sure the front door is clearly visible and that any walkways are edged and accessible. Store garbage pails behind a barrier and keep trash out of sight. Store children’s toys in the backyard rather than strewn across the front lawn. These simple steps can improve curb appeal instantly. Spruce up the lawn A well-manicured lawn can go a long way to making a home more appealing. If your thumb is anything but green, hire a professional lawn and garden service to help you establish a lush, green lawn. Dress to impress The entryway to a home is the first thing visitors will see. Be sure the front door and entryway are in good repair. A pop of color can’t hurt, either. If you do not like the idea of painting the door a vivid hue, dress it up with a colorful wreath or another decorative accent. Carry your interior design style to the outdoors as well. Welcoming accents, such as cushioned chairs or potted plants, also add curb appeal. Consider painting house numbers on a terra-cotta pot and filling it with plants. The pot will be decorative and functional. Rely on symmetry Symmetry is pleasing to the eye and easy to arrange. Use it to frame your entryway and throughout your property. Symmetrical use of lighting fixtures, plants, trees, and decorative items really can have an impact. Don’t forget lighting Outdoor lighting adds appeal and safety to a property. Use lighting to accent a special landscaping feature or to illuminate a walkway. Few people enjoy approaching a dark home, and outdoor lighting can ensure your property always is well-lit. Remember, curb appeal is applicable both day and night. Improving on curb appeal can make a difference in how others view your home.

A: Your set is valued in the $50-$75 range, depending on condition. More than 500 Davy Crockett products were licensed by Disney, including milk glasses ($8-$25), frontier gun set ($35-$150), lunchbox ($100-$400), cookie jar ($150-$425) and litho button ($15$55). All prices are from “Hake’s Price Guide to Character Toys” by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles. That coonskin cap generally sells for about $35. *** Q: I have inherited a partial set of Depression glass in the Daisy pattern. It is crystal in color. Since I’m missing at least half of the set, I would like to contact others who collect so I can purchase what I don’t already have. Can you help me? I’m also curious about how old this pattern is. -- Doris, Orlando, Florida A: The Daisy pattern was introduced by the Indiana Glass Company in Dunkirk, Indiana, during the late 1930s. It was produced until about 1985. It was made in amber (1940s), crystal (1933-’40), dark green (1960s-’80s), fired-on red (late 1930s) and milk glass (1960s-’80s).

There are several excellent references that might be helpful. I especially like “Warman’s Depression Glass: A Value and Identification Guide” by Ellen T. Schroy and published by Krause Books. This guide spotlights more than 170 patterns and lists current market values for 10,000 items. The latest edition has been expanded with values that I think accurately reflect the present marketplace. You also might contact the National Depression Glass Association, an organization that was founded in 1974 is and dedicated to the preservation of Americanmade glassware. A newsletter, “News & Views,” is published for members. Contact is P.O. Box 8264, Wichita, KS 67208; www.ndga. net; and Dean Lowry, membership chairman, membership@ndga.net. *** Q: I inherited a pedestal cake plate in Heirloom fine china by Georges Briard. It is from the 1940s, and I would like to know its value. -- Ruth, Sun City, Arizona A: I found your cake plate on eBay for $40, which I think is fairly close to its value. They will roll about less in the trunk and are easier to carry into the house when you get home. * “Many people keep some pet food outdoors. If you have problems with ants in your pet’s food if feeding outside, you will like this trick: Place the bowl of food into a larger pan filled with water. The ants can’t cross it, and it has the added bonus of being another source of water for the animals. Be sure to change it frequently.” -P.Y. in Alabama * “We unexpectedly had friends visit with their granddaughter. Since it was unplanned, and we aren’t used to little kids, we were unprepared. Favorite Recipes Mini Fruit Tart Cheesecakes
INGREDIENTS: FOR THE CRUST: 1 1/4 cups Graham Cracker crumbs 3 tablespoons packed brown sugar 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted FOR THE CHEESECAKES: 8 ounces PHILADELPHIA cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup sour cream, room temperature 1 egg, room temperature 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste (or regular vanilla extract) FOR THE TOPPING: 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 teaspoon cornstarch 2 cups fresh berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and/or sliced strawberries) DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 12 muffin cup holes with liners. Stir together graham cracker crumbs, brown sugar, and melted butter. Press about 2-2 1/2 tablespoons of the mixture into the bottom of each muffin liner. (I find that using a small shot glass or similar object can help pack the crusts easily.) Beat room temperature cream cheese with a hand mixer until fluffy. Beat in room temperature sour cream. Beat in egg, sugar, and vanilla bean paste until (mostly) no lumps remain. You can use pure vanilla extract, but using the paste adds lots of flavor and the little vanilla bean flecks. (Room temperature ingredients are a must to avoid lumps, believe me!) Evenly divide (about 2-2 1/2 tablespoons each) cheesecake among crusts. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until they just begin to brown. Cool completely and refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight. To make the topping, place the lime juice, sugar, and cornstarch in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir until it boils, then cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. It will thicken as it cools. Assemble the cheesecakes close to serving time. Brush the top of each cheesecake with a bit of the lime syrup. Place berries on top and brush the berries with more syrup. Chill until ready to serve. (The fruit is best added the same day as serving.) The fruit won’t stick to the cheesecake - it’s more of just a topping. Store loosely covered in refrigerator. Cheesecakes will last up to 4 days in refrigerator or can be frozen for up to one month. Once you add the fruit, eat within the day.
