John Edsel White
John Edsel White, age 88 of 5596 Cascade Rd., Cascade, VA went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. He was born July 30, 1928 in Bullock County, GA to the late Johnie White and the late Evelyn Mitchell White. Mr. White was married to Virginia Wilson White who survives of the residence. John was a member of Sandy Shores Baptist Church where he was active in several mission trips which included Costa Rica, Prague, Panama and Florida during hurricane Andrew. He was a Hospice volunteer for 25 years. Mr. White loved to work in the garden and also was very good at building homes, he built his own home and two others. John proudly served his country after WWII serving in occupied Japan and in the Korean War. In addition to his loving wife he is survived by three daughters, Debra Draper and husband Bill, Sandra Henry and husband Bill and Toni Ingram and husband Vernon all of Martinsville, VA: Step sons, Ricky Medford, Timothy Medford, Dwayne Medford and wife Karen: a step daughter, Marisa Frazier: Seven grandchildren: six great grandchildren: a brother, Bernie White of Pooler, GA: three special pets, Rowdy, Mini and Gracie. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by Three brothers, three sisters and a grandchild. The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. till 7:30 p.m., Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Norris Funeral Services, Inc. Garzon, age 89 of 114 Cathy Pl., Danville, VA passed a w a y Thursday, September 8, 2016. He was born June 17, 1927 in Tabio, Colombia, South America (near Bogota) to the late Belisario Garzon and the late Ana Maria Garzon. Mr. Garzon was married to Marina Velasquez Garzon who survives of the residence. Victor came to Danville in 1963 as a Histologist for the local hospital, where he worked until his retirement.
In addition to his wife he is survived by four sons, Jorge A. Garzon, Oscar M. Garzon, Edgar A. Garzon and Ruben D. Garzon. Mr. Garzon had two sisters, Maria Ignacia and Maruja: five brothers, Medardo, Edilberto, Libardo, Faustino and Juan: seven grandchildren, Kristian, Gavin, Giana, Cambria, Cruz , Marli and Oriana. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Norris Funeral Services, Inc., Mt. Hermon Chapel, 3995 Franklin Tpke. Samuel Thomas Thompson, 78, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday. September 6, 2016 at Duke University Hospital after a six year fight with cancer. Sam was born in Pittsylvania County, VA on September 25, 1937, a son of the late Johnny and Hester Richie Thompson. He was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Pelham, NC and retired from Lowes after 23 years of service. Sam is survived by his wife, Edna Jones Thompson; a daughter Teresa Lakey and husband Robert; granddaughters, Megan and Robin (Jake); and a brother, William Thompson (Loretta). In addition to his parents, Sam was predeceased by four brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jason Gaskin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Jerry Anthony Flint, 66, of 10221 Old Richmond Rd., Keeling, VA, died Sunday, September 4, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for the past six months. Mr. Flint was born in Danville, VA on December 24, 1949 a son of Jerry Martin Flint and Martha Hall Flint. He spent most of his life in Texas before moving back to Danville in 2002. He was a US Army veteran who served his country in the Vietnam War. He was of the Methodist Faith. Mrs. Oakes graduated from Whitmell Farm Life High School, she received her teachers certificate from Madison College, B S Degree from Radford College, and a Masters of Arts Degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She taught public school for thirty-nine years and retired in June of 1978. She also taught night school for Dan River Mills for many years. Mrs. Oakes was a life member of The Virginia Education Association, National Education Association, Virginia Association of Retired Teachers, Eliza Johns Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, National and Local Chapters of the American of Retired Persons, Dan River Retired Employees Club, and a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. She was accepted and included in the Worlds Who’s Who of Women in 1980 edition, and also included in Notable Americans 1982 edition.
Sally was predeceased by her husband Thomas Bernard Oakes; her son, Thomas Kenneth Oakes; two brothers, John William Oakes and George Washington Oakes; and two sisters, Grace Burton and Elizabeth Aldrich. She is survived by three nieces, Betty Hirsch, Carol Fortner, and Rebecca Moore; one nephew, David W. Oakes, Sr.; and numerous great nieces and great nephews. The family would like to thank her special caregiver Terri Bailey for her kindness and support she gave to Sally and also the staff on the South Terrace of Roman Eagle Memorial Home. Funeral Services for Mrs. Oakes will be conducted on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 2:00 pm from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Tobias Lutz officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service at the Chapel. “Faulty Meme Logic” My phone chirped letting me know someone had sent me a text. As is usually the case it was one of my amazing church members. The text read, “Hey Preacher, have you seen this?” I get those texts a lot. Usually it is something along the lines of “Why women live longer than men,” which will be a picture of a man doing something incredibly stupid, like using a tall ladder which is propped on two chairs. Which are on the hood of a vehicle. In a tornado. This time, though, it was a meme which no doubt someone felt incredibly clever putting together. It was comparing Islam to other things. The first section was a picture of a bearded Jewish man beside a picture of a bearded Muslim man. The second section was a picture of a nun beside a picture of a Muslim woman. The third section was a picture of George Washington beside a picture of a boy throwing a rock at a tank. The meme read, “Why is it... a Jew can grow his beard to practice his faith, but when a Muslim does the same, he is labeled an extremist? A nun can cover herself from head to toe to devote herself to God, but when a Muslim does the same, she’s considered oppressed? When this person defends his land he is labeled a hero, but when a Muslim defends his land, he is labeled a terrorist?” Proverbs 26:7 says, “The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.” In other words, foolish people have a habit of making unequal comparisons. The
meme I described is one of the best examples of that I have ever seen. Let us dissect it briefly, and then close with a word about sound reasoning. On the first point, the beard of a Muslim is not an issue, unless the beard becomes a prelude to bad behavior. Beards do not make a person dangerous. A man could grow his beard long enough to earn the nickname Rapunzel face, and it would not warrant the term extremist. It is suicide bombings, televised beheadings, punishment rapes, honor killings, burning people alive, things of that nature that are currently earning the Muslim men who engage in them the title of extremist. I am unaware of any bearded Jewish men currently engaging in the above list of activities.

Brain Games vs. Dementia
Participants experienced improvement in areas of attention, feelings of control, quality of life and even improved driving reaction time because objects off to the side were seen more quickly. The online version of the program they used is called “Double Decision,” and it can be found on brainhq.com if you search for that name. As samples, there are games to play for free. Here’s one example: Identifying fastmoving objects on a screen, including those in peripheral vision, with tasks getting more and more difficult. While it’s tempting to see online brain training as the end-all to delaying dementia, we should not forget that the Federal Trade Commission once fined a maker of brain games for making false claims. On the other hand, funding for this long-term research was made possible by the National Institute on Aging. Suggestion: Go online to those free games at brainhq. com and try a few. Decide for yourself.
--If you don’t yet have a computer or tablet, recent news might persuade you to ask for one for your birthday: brain-training exercises reduce dementia. Researchers at a half-dozen universities collaborated on different cognitive training programs with nearly 3,000 participants starting in 1998. Our hearts are so full after visiting with this precious couple and realizing all of the medical expenses they have incurred that my son, Chris, and I feel the need to ask our family, friends, and community to help them. James Yeatts was diagnosed with corticobasal degeneration about five years ago. This is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by nerve cell loss and atrophy of multiple areas of the brain. This disease has attacked James with a vengeance. He is currently confined to a hospital bed. His wife, Joan, is his primary caregiver and is suffering from blood clots in both legs and is having to take therapy herself for inflammation in her shoulder. James is a veteran and has gotten some help from the VA, but was recently told they are running behind in their assistance so he will have to wait for some of the medical assistance he needs. It is so sad that this couple has worked hard all their lives and have always helped others, but are unable to get the help they need now. Many avenues have been explored but they have always hit a brick wall. This disease has taken a toll on both James and Joan, both physically and financially. Any money donated to their fund will go toward his many medical expenses.

10 Fun Facts In Time For Fall Autumn is a season of many changes, with some of the most notable including the dramatic multicolored displays that occur just prior to trees shedding their leaves. It’s also a time of year when many people feel reenergized by cooler temperatures and spend many hours outdoors enjoying all that fall has to offer. Whether one is collecting leaves, picking apples, exploring corn mazes, or driving the countryside enjoying the foliage, autumn is full of fun facts that can make the season that much more enjoyable. 1. Autumn begins on the autumnal equinox, which occurs on or near September 22 in the northern hemisphere. This year, September 22 is the day when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving southward. When the equinox occurs, there are an equal number of daylight and nighttime hours. 2. Since ancient times, autumn has been an important time of year for many civilizations. Autumn is a main harvesting time in many areas, and a successful harvest was once necessary for survival. Many steps are, and have long been, taken to ensure a bountiful autumn harvest. 3. Fall is a time when trees and other plants prepare for dormancy during winter. As autumn progresses and the hours of daylight gradually decrease, trees begin to close down their food production systems and reduce the amount of chlorophyll in leaves. Chlorophyll is the chemical that makes tree leaves green, and as it declines, other chemicals become more prominent and shine through in the leaves. That is why leaves change color. 4. Some scientists believe that global climate change can impact autumn colors, such as delaying the change in trees. Also, red pigments may start to decline as trees use sugary fuel to grow new twigs rather than to cause red leaf displays. 5. Americans more readily refer to this time of year as “fall,” while the British use “autumn.” Both terms date back to around the 16th century. Prior to this period, autumn was known as “harvest.” 6. Much of the United States bids farewell to monarch butterflies in the fall. Each autumn, monarch butterflies migrate from the United States to Mexico and some parts of Southern California. They fly at speeds ranging between 12 and 25 miles per hour. 7. A study of U.S. centenarians born between 1880 to 1895 published in the Journal of Aging Research, found that babies born during autumn months are more likely to live to age 100 than those born during the rest of the year. Thirty percent of the centenarians followed were born during the fall. 8. Squash, pumpkins and other gourds are prominent in the fall. The largest squash grown on record belonged to Joel Jarvis of Ontario, and his huge winner weighed in at 1,486.6 pounds in 2011. 9. The many-colored leaves are not the only display one might see during the fall. The autumn equinox signals the aurora borealis, also called the Northern Lights. Besides the lengthening of nights and cool evening weather, which are great for stargazers, autumn is “aurora season,” according to NASA. That’s because, during the fall, geomagnetic storms are about twice as frequent as the annual average. 10. Full moons are named for the month or season in which they rise. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox.
LYNCHBURG—In collaboration with the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, the Community Access Network and Centra, the groundbreaking for the new Fifth Street Community Health Center will be held on Thursday, September 8th from 11:30-1:00pm. With over 17,000 uninsured residents in this community, 37,000 residents with Medicaid and Medicare who do not have access to primary care and a poverty rate of 96.3% among African Americans around 5th street, this is a big step to continue providing healthcare services for the most vulnerable community members. This center, which will be an additional Free Clinic site, will provide walk-in immediate and primary care services to high-risk underinsured or uninsured patients, mental health services through collaborative community partnerships and access to specialists and other additional medical services. Through partnerships with nonprofits and social service agencies in the community, the clinic will also be equipped to address social issues affecting patients’ health, whether it is inadequate housing, transportation or a lack of financial resources. Having all these services under one roof is truly unique. The Community Access Network is comprised of local healthcare providers who work collaboratively to address the lack of access to health care locally and the social factors affecting the communities’ health. The facility has been carefully designed with patients of all ages and their families in mind. The medical center is slated to open late 2017 and will be located on the corner of 5th and Federal Street in downtown Lynchburg. Parking for the groundbreaking event will be held at the James River Conference Center, with shuttle service to the construction site.

Hashed Brussels Sprouts 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice, plus 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest 1 pound Brussels sprouts 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 medium purple onion, minced 1 garlic clove, minced 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons vegetable broth or low-sodium chicken broth 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon honey or sugar 1. Using a large bowl, pour in the lemon juice. Cut bottoms off the sprouts, and discard. Halve sprouts lengthwise. Thinly slice sprouts, cutting around and discarding the firm core. Immediately toss sprout slices with lemon juice to separate leaves and retain color. 2. Heat oil and butter over high heat in a skillet large enough to hold all the sprouts. When oil mixture is hot, but not smoking, add the sprouts, onion, garlic, Italian seasoning and salt and pepper. Cook until sprouts begin to wilt, but leaves are still green and crisp, about 3 to 4 minutes. Some of the leaves might brown slightly. 3. Move the sprouts to one side of the pan and mix broth, mustard and honey or sugar together in the pan. Combine mixture with the sprouts and cook, stirring, 2 minutes more. Turn off heat, and stir in lemon zest, reserving a little to sprinkle on top of the dish. Transfer to serving bowl, sprinkle with remaining zest and serve. Serves 4.
