What's happening along the Foothills Trail?
Foothills Trail underwent many ADA improvement projects in 2023. Below are highlights of the work done by Pierce County Parks and current closures impacting trail users:
• East Puyallup Trailhead Expansion: Construction for the East Puyallup Trailhead Expansion project began in September 2023 and is mostly completed. Trail users can now enjoy triple the number of parking spots than previously offered, EV charging stations, new lighting, signage, landscaping and ADA improvements to the restrooms. Expect to see touch-up work to happen this spring when the weather is more cooperative, but no impacts will be made to trailhead usage. For more details about this project, click here.
• Upcoming ADA Improvements:
• McMillin Trailhead: Signage installation and restroom ADA accessibility improvements will be completed by spring 2024. There will be no impacts made to trail usage.
• South Prairie Trailhead: ADA accessibility improvements are substantially complete. ADA parking signs will be installed later in 2024. There will be no impacts made to trail usage.
• Learn more about Pierce County Parks’ ADA Improvement Projects.
• Spiketon Ditch Bridge remains closed: The Spiketon Ditch Bridge remains closed to the public until fur
ther notice. There are no detours available around the closure. Pierce County is reviewing the bridge inspection report conducted to determine a plan of action. For updates and to sign up for trail closure notifications, visit www.PierceCountyWA.gov/Foothills

Pipeline Trail and Orangegate Park Updates
Construction is underway for the Pipeline Trail! We’ve started clearing and removing select trees to make way for the future Pipeline trailhead and parking lot at 84th St E.
Currently the southern section of Orangegate Park is closed to the public as Pipeline Trail construction continues. The closure is south of 84th St E and Pipeline Road E. We will re-evaluate the closure in May to determine if public access can be restored. Temporary fencing is in place for the closed section, which will be replaced by permanent fencing that will be installed along the Orangegate Park boundary. Users should expect construction activities to close areas of Orangegate Park throughout 202425 as we build Pipeline Trail and construct park improvements.
To learn more about the Pipeline Trail project or about the Orangegate Park project, visit www.PierceCountyWA.gov/Orangegate.
Other Projects
• Finalization of plans for Chambers Creek Canyon trail, bridge, and boardwalk project underway with project construction planned for the summer of 2024.
• The sandbox at Cross Park has been removed and will be replaced with a shelter in March.
Sprinker Outdoor Improvement Project Update
We appreciate your patience as we work to bring you a new outdoor recreation space at Sprinker Recreation Center! Construction is expected to be completed this summer and will feature new park shelters, a playground and spray park, ballfields, a fitness court, basketball court, and a futsal court. This summer, we’ll also be installing an additional restroom building adjacent to the Parkland Trail, resurface the exterior tennis courts, and improve facility fencing.
