RSOPA THEATRE GROUP Presents

THE BARN THEATRE

NOVEMBER 17TH-18TH 2012

WELCOME It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to this wonderful venue for our production of Les Miserables Schools Edition. What an experience for this young cast, all at school and college to perform in the most successful musical ever! It has been hard work to get to performance stage but I’m sure you’ll agree the cast are simply remarkable in their delivery and commitment to such a huge piece of theatre. This group of young people have all contributed to their costumes, personal props, fundraising, and some older members even leading rehearsals when I’ve been poorly! They really are a remarkable bunch not just in performance but in their friendships and how they respect one another. I am so proud to present them to you... Enjoy!

SYNOPSIS Set in 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, convicted for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving family, is released after spending 19 years in prison. A now bitter and desperate man Valjean is caught stealing again but avoids futher prosecution due to the generosity and kindness of a Bishop. Valjean, astounded by the Bishop’s actions, is able to find God and is motivated to change and become an honest man. His pursuit for a better life means that his parole is violated but, despite being relentlessly pursued by the inspector Javert, Valjean eventually rises to become the Mayor of Montreuil-Sur-Mer and a factory owner. Fantine, an employee of Valjean’s, is left struggling to support herself and her young child having been mistreated and fired by the factory foreman. Valjean attempts to help her as she is dying in his arms and promises to take care of her daughter, Cosette, who is lodging with an innkeeper and his wife. After a mistreated Cosette is purchased back from the dishonest and moneygrubbing Thénardiers, the show moves nine years to the future where Cosette, now adopted into the care of Valjean, has grown to become a beautiful young woman. With a revolution ensuing, Cosette falls hopelessly in love with a student revolutionary, Marius. Tensions rise as the students prepare for battle. Éponine, desperate to impress her childhood love Marius, is the first of many to fall. Javert, now aware of his disguise confronts Valjean in the mist of the battle. Marius falls unconscious in the sewers of Paris but is saved by Valjean. The fighting ends and Marius and Cosette are wed. LES MISÉRABLES SCHOOL EDITION introduces a new generation to the inspirational story that has touched the hearts of millions. Adapted from the novel by Victor Hugo’s, LES MISÉRABLES tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit.
