Polychromie 2014 — editions polystyrene 16x22cm — CYMK — 208 pages offset printing — perfect binding first printing at 1 000 copies

And as a publisher, following its Polychromie is a comic anthology production and promotion once of 208 pages in which 15 authors made between 4 and 15 pages each printed. using a single constraint. The book is printed with two colors : red and blue. To read the red color, you need to use a blue filter as to read the blue layer, you’ll need to use the red filter. My work on this book has been on different levels : As an author, making a 14 pages novel. As an illustrator and graphic designer, bringing the graphic identity of the book. 44

These illustrations chaptering the book are based on the same shape, size, and position in the page. The whole book being an homage to Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, each illustration shows a different place setting a recurring character. 6

The back cover and inside illustrations where made with Alex Chauvel. Alex working on the characters in blue and me, on the background in orange.

The cover design had to be representative of the book’s concept, without interfering in its understanding. The main picture introduces this round shape that will guide the reader in his progression. The two main colors suggest the use of filters. The illustration itself announces the theme of the book about the city thought its interpretations. Heavy-toast 2011 — editions polystyrene 15x21cm — CYMK — 30 pages offset printing — case of pages without binding first printing at 1 000 copies

My first project as an author, published by editions polystyrene. thirty pages for an infinity of combinations. Heavy Toast presents as a deck of cards in which pages can be shuffled to create a new story every time. The reader follows four characters evolving in a space station constantly moving, the goals and relationship they have will be modified depending on the order you read the pages in. Each page being a single scene and bringing its own informations, there’s no «good» order to read them. The reader makes his inter1010

pretation of the story depending on the informations he gathers and their connexions. The writing was mainly made on a refinement of dialogues and an attention to the words used, so each reading can be understood differently from the last one.

The case implicitly introduces some basic informations to make the immersion easier : a panoramic view of the outside and inside of the station and a brief presentation of the different characters and their personality. So my work on this book was, first of all, the writing and the drawing on the pages and the case. But also the publishing part of it, in its production, distribution, sales and its promotion on festivals.

Illustrations 9e Art en Vienne Poitiers — 2011-2014

Since 2011 I’m working with the French association 9e Art en Vienne which performs conferences about different thematics in comics. These meetings offer a dialogue between author, theorists and professionals on the chosen subject. For instance, a «regard croisé» (fresh perspective in French) set place about Marc Antoine Mathieu’s book God In Person, this event inviting the author to discuss with a mathematician-philosopher and an archbishop. My work is to provide illustrations to promote the association on 1414

diverse forms : posters, programs, member card, website, newsletters and grant applications. It’s with the graphic design agency Kazar, Poitiers based, that I directly work. The goal being to show a wide range of styles respecting the association’s graphic charter and according to the designer’s desires of composition.

Comics Centre pour l’Egalité des Chances et de la Lutte Contre le Racisme Brussel — 2013

After a publication on the comic website GrandPapier.org, I have been contacted by the «Centre pour l’égalité des chances et la lutte contre le racism» (Equality of chances and fight against racism Center) of Brussel. Their project was to sensibilize agencies against some behaviors that might be taken as violent or discriminant at work. To do so they planed to build a website to show 70 situations adapted in comics showing these behaviors. This project finally never was, but two situations were asked as a trial. These situations 1616

were written in a line or two, this was my part of the job was to propose dialogues, a composition and most of all : credibility. Once written and drawn I sent them four finished pages adapting these two lines.

Performances OubapoShow and Night of Museums Angoulême — 2013

The «Ouvroir de Bande-dessinée Potentiel» (Oubapo) was founded in november 1992 by the French publishing house L’Association. This group create comics under artistic constraints in the way of the OuLiPo, created by Raymond Queneau. The authors from this group invited us to contribute to a set of performances during the International Comic-book Festival in Angouleme : the OubapoShow. It’s representing the editions polystyrene that Alex Chauvel, Rémi Farnos and myself proposed a concept and have 18

performed during the event. The performance’s concept was an evolutive drawing made by three people in live and showed on a screen. The first one drawing on a post-it, which was then partly cover by a second one, making the initial drawing evolve. This performance lasted for 10 minutes and have been renewed for 15 minutes in the Museum of Comics of Angouleme during the Night of Museums.

Exhibition BeauHaus Brussel — 2012

The BeauHaus is an exhibition space opened in Brussel and directed by the Belgium association BeauBeau. It is known as a meeting place for disciplines, public and artists. The editions polystyrene realized in 2012 a collective exhibition with the visual artist Thomas Malenfant. This event took place when I was living in Melbourne, Australia. I managed to take part of it by sending four original pages and 10 copies of a booklet. This work was my first homage to Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. 20

A chapter of this book was adapted in comics to talk about my vision of Melbourne.

The small booklet gathered some abstract compositions, mixing different influences of the Australian architecture.

travel books Europe, Russia, East-Asia, Australia, US — 2011-2013

My world trip started after my studies finished and once my project for the editions polystyrene, Heavy-Toast, was ready to be printed. This was a long term plan we had with a good friend of mine. So we left, backpacking and hitchhiking to Moscow. Transports and accommodations were improvised day to day. We kept going through Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam and Australia. We took different roads and I settled for a while in Melbourne before coming back to France, after briefly visiting the US and 22

Canada. This trip wasn’t only enriching for my own experience but it gave me the occasion to fill a lot of sketchbooks on the road. We also had two film cameras : a Nikon FM2 and a Ubitel. See opposite one of the pictures taken during these 19 months.

No need to say that these drawing are the result of a lot of influences. The different cultures and architectures gathered in these books are a major source of inspiration and enrichment for my actual production. It also allowed me to improve my technics, particularly on representing atmosphere, perspective and places. This way of traveling limited the size of sketchbooks to an A6 in general, so we could keep it in a pocket and take it out easily depending on situations.

Found on the road, these sketchbooks were all different. Tools changed too, some running out of ink, some other bought but being different, forcing to try different technics. The time on the drawing was also depending of the time we had to visit before taking the road again. These sketchbooks are not what I would call some nice travel books, they are witnesses, logbooks. We can find in them some quick sketches, finished drawings, notes of maps, translations, addresses… They where most of all a main communication tool in the trip. other publications Au Fil du Nil n°21 — 2011 Zeszyty Komiksowe — 2010 Magazine Polystyrène — 2008-2010

During my studies at Angouleme’s Fine Arts I had the occasion to take part to several publications. Le Fil du Nil is a magazine published by the school each year giving to the graduating students the occasion to control the printing of a catalog. For this issue, Lisa Yokobori, Alex Chauvel and me decided to work together on divided portions of pages, to recreate this melting pot of influences that have been for us these three years of studies. Zeszyty Komiksowe is a Polish comic-anthology, publishing an issue about 28

abstract comics. Having known of some of my works printed in the magazine polystyrene, made earlier, they asked me to put them in this issue. Finally, the magazines Polystyrene are the roots of the editions polystyrene. Printed in one unique copy to gather our works and researches about the narration and Comics rules.
