“ At 15 I met Paulo. Got pregnant when I was 18 and we

moved in together. He smelled of other women and when I told him that, he pushed me and said he would kill me. When Rui was born, Paulo brought home a woman and put us on the street. I spent all night in the open, freezing cold. Rui did not cry. In the morning the other woman left and we entered. I took a beating. And the next day I took another. And another. And then there were so many that I simply lost count. Rui never cried. I talked to the social worker and she told me to go to a refuge. And I went. Was it easy? No. It’s weird. So many women like me. Was it worth it? Yes. And now Rui may cry. ”

Stopping domestic violence takes planning from the victim and support from all of us. There isn’t a single response for the problem. Each case is specific and must be treated as such. But there is a way out. And the more we know and talk about it, the closer we will get to putting an end to it.
