A CHALLENGE TO LEAD - Letter From the National President

BROTHERS AND FRIENDS, I firmly and confidently believe that fraternity is needed now more than ever. In July 2022, immediately after I took an oath as national president of Pi Kappa Phi, I challenged those in the audience to choose to lead. Consistent with that challenge, over the last year, Pi Kappa Phi has embraced leadership in all areas and has chosen to provide uncommon opportunities to our members to learn and practice leadership.

Among our 76 fraternal peers, Pi Kappa Phi is ranked in the top 10 in almost every statistical category. We have more than 10,000 undergraduate members at 157 active undergraduate chapters. In 2022, we supported the chartering or re-chartering of five chapters, and we have 10 confirmed chapter expansions slated for the 2023-24 academic year. We have increased recruitment support for our current chapters and as a result, experienced a 17.5% increase over the prior year’s recruitment results.

Our leadership development and educational programs strengthen our brotherhood for all members. In January 2023, we hosted five in-person Pi Kapp College for Chapter Officers leadership events. Nearly 1,000 brothers participated in these programs, learning leadership skills to build stronger chapters. This summer we will be launching the Institute for Common Loyalty, a leadership development program specifically designed to focus on new member education, and are committing additional resources toward chapter and student development.

We have re-invested in our fraternity infrastructure with the build-out of our marketing and communications team and the implementation of enhanced technology. Pi Kappa Phi and our affiliate organizations, Pi Kappa Phi Properties, Pi Kappa Phi Foundation and The Ability Experience, have collaborated with an intentional commitment and drive to scale our opportunities to serve one another and, separately, each entity’s stakeholders in greater capacities.

In the coming months, the Fraternity and our affiliate organizations will begin the process of developing a strategically aligned vision of a collaborative future. One thing is for certain: the plan will be based on our unwavering commitment to choose to lead, and to be an exceptional leader in the fraternal community.

While we have taken advantage of all the opportunities presented to us over the past year, our work is not done. We have to make the choice to lead every single day. None of the accomplishments over the past year would have been possible if Pi Kappa Phi made the choice to sit back and watch. The Pi Kappa Phi journey is a special one and is an opportunity I hope all of you embrace throughout your experience.

Yours in Pi Kappa Phi, James M. Smith, National President
