Jeffrey Buhler, C.K. International Executive Council President Jeff holds degrees in Religion and Psychology from the University of Florida and holds a Masters in Business Administration from the Crummer School of Business at Rollins College. Currently, Jeff serves as Sr. Vice President for Massey Services with 95 locations across the Southeast. Jeff served as Vice President of Operations for Middleton Lawn & Pest Control that was merged into Massey Services in 2010. Prior to Middleton, Jeff held several positions in the areas of long-range planning, annual capital programming, engineering operations and guest room services for Gaylord Entertainment and Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center. He is a guest lecturer at the University of Central Florida College of Hospitality Management with a focus on Strategic Planning and Engineering and the Rollins College Business School in the areas of Operations Management and Organized Behavior. Jeff serves on several governing boards including the Orlando Science Center, the Florida Turf Grass Association, the Central Florida YMCA, the "Negro Spiritual" Scholarship Foundation, the Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center of Central Florida and Camp Ridgecrest for Boys. Jeff is a ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church. On behalf of the Fraternity, he served as Chapter Advisor and House Corporation President for Florida Delta chapter. He has served Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity as Leadership Consultant, Director of Chapter Services and Assistant Executive Director. Additionally, for the Educational Foundation, he served as Director of Development. Jeff is married to Faith with two kids (Maya 7 and Jackson 3). Jackson received a new member pin on the day of his birth from Chuck Steinmetz , FL Delta alumnus and Big Pi recipient.

Big Pi Recipient - W. Samuel Sadler

W. Samuel (“Sam”) Sadler holds two degrees from William and Mary, a BA in Government and a masters degree in Educational Administration. After a brief stint in the public health field, he worked at the College of William and Mary from 1967 until 2008 when he retired. His tenure included service as Assistant Dean of Admissions, Dean of Men, Dean of Students, Dean of Student Affairs and, for the last 19 years of his 41 year career, Vice President for Student Affairs. He has also taught in the graduate programs of both William and Mary and George Washington University, held national and regional offices in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, coordinated the Admissions Clearinghouse for Virginia, served as a member of the Educational Testing Service’s Computer-Based Institutional Center Task Force, been a member of the board of the College Venture Program at Brown University, was the founder/ director of the College’s Washington Program, and a member of the Governor’s Commission on the Reduction of Sexual Assault Victimization in Virginia and the Attorney General’s Task Force on Drinking by Students. His service, leadership, and accomplishments have been recognized by the College of William and Mary, its Alumni Association and by his profession. From William and Mary, he is the recipient of its prestigious Thomas Jefferson Award and the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award, the Thatcher Award for Academic Excellence and the Alumni Association’s Faculty Service Award and Alumni Medallion. His Virginia colleagues named him as their Outstanding Professional and in 2003, he was selected to receive the John Jones Award for Outstanding Performance As A Senior Student Affairs Offer by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators – Region III. He is most proud of having been selected by the senior classes of the College on 23 occasions to be the speaker at their graduation candlelight ceremony. On the occasion of his retirement in 2008, the Board of Visitors of the College renamed the College’s student center in his honor. Sam has also been active with a number of community organizations and his church. He and his wife, Mary Liz, met in college and have been married for 47 years. They have two daughters, Dr. Leslie Sadler Meyerhoff of Ithaca, NY, and Erin Kershner of Charlottesville, VA and two grandchildren, Miles (8) and Zoe (5) Kershner.

Big Pi Recipient - Mitch Liss

Mitch Liss is the current President of Edsal Manufacturing Company based in Chicago. Edsal is a worldwide manufacturing company which produces steel shelving, lockers and other related commercial steel products. Under Mitchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guidance, Edsal has expanded its enormous market presence and is one of the leaders in its industry. Many times when trying to reach Mitch, he is in China hopefully reducing the U.S. deficit. Prior to Edsal, Mitch was involved in starting Currenex, an online currency trading business where he served as Vice President, Treasurer and CFO. His most impressive accomplishment was when he became assistant Treasurer of General Instruments at the age of 32 and then served as Vice President. Mitch is not just about business though. He is a major contributor to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and he and his wife Karyn have spent a great deal of their time helping the organization. He is a dedicated husband and father of four. He was a member of the IL Tau Delta Chapter at the University of Illinois where he graduated with an Electrical Engineering Degree and then went on to earn his MBA from the University of Chicago.

Big Pi Recipient - David Temple

David Temple has devoted his career to bringing equity to education and workforce development skills to disabled populations, welfare recipients, and intellectually curious K-20 potential science and engineering students. Born and schooled in post WWII lawfully segregated Richmond VA, David devoted much of his late high-school years to public accommodations desegregation activities. In 1969 he earned a baccalaureate degree in psychology and later a M.Ed. in special education respectively from the University of Virginia (UVA). Along with a determined group of white friends, they desegregated UVA’s fraternity system, in so doing returning the dormant VA Omega Alpha Chapter of Pi Lambda Phi, Inc. and its anti-discrimination, non-sectarian Creed to Founder Thomas Jefferson’s campus. An engaged alumnus, he was a charter director in the late 1980s to found the university’s Walter Ridley Scholarship Fund. Named for the university’s first African-American graduate, the Fund’s mission is to ensure that UVA’s African American students who excel academically will always have access to essential financial support when or if needed. David served as a Fairfax County, Virginia public school principal and teacher of students with special educational needs, and later led the county-wide creation of that region’s first ever multi-special needs workforce skills training program for high school aged students. During this period, the county board of supervisors appointed him to the Fairfax County Human Rights Commission, where he served for several years as its Vice Chair. He was appointed in 1986 by Virginia Governor Gerald L. Baliles to serve as his Deputy Secretary of Education. In the 1990s, David served two cabinet posts from D.C. Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly, including Executive Director, Mayor’s Youth Initiatives. Later, he served the US Commerce Department as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Program Operations at the Economic Development Administration (EDA), and earlier as Senior Advisor directing the secretary's Welfare-to-Work Initiative. In 2005 David served as an education Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF). There, he directed a multi-year NSF-NASA partnership that succeeded in developing six replicable national post-secondary models in the recruitment, retention, graduation of underrepresented minorities in higher education science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce. Additionally, he directed and managed the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, a Bill Clinton originated presidential recognition program that honors STEM-faculty, teachers, scientists and organizations who have demonstrated a five years minimum of sustained excellence in mentoring underrepresented K-20 minority, women and disabled students to the professoriate ranks, the STEM industry, or the science and technology workforce. He also chaired the National Science and Technology Council's (NSTC) Education and Workforce Development subcommittee. The Center for the Study of the Presidency and the Congress requested his engagement on policy advisor cohorts: the initiative on Strengthening America’s Future; and subsequently, the Center’s STEM Workforce Advisory Team. He also serves as a member of the Business and Industry STEM Education Council (BISEC). Virginia governors appointed him to state boards and commissions: Corrections Board (Governor Chuck Robb); Juvenile Justice Vice Chair (Governors Baliles, and L. Douglas Wilder); and, the Governors' P-16 Education Council (Mark Warner and Tim Kaine). And served also as Vice Chair and Charter Director of the statewide non-profit Voices for Virginia's Children. He was elected and served for many years on the Democratic State Central Committee, was nominated three times in southern Fairfax County to the state House of Delegates (less than 1% African American electorate), and managed other political campaigns, including then state Senator Wilder's Lt Governor NoVA campaign, an American history-making event. He is a recipient of the U.S. Commerce Department’s Silver Medal for superior contributions to workforce development, as well as Vice President Al Gore’s Hammer Award for Excellence in Government Reinvention. He was awarded the Jeannie P. Baliles Award for leadership in conceiving and developing the statewide Virginia Literacy (adult) Initiative. He is Vice President and baritone section leader at the 208 years-old Alfred Street Baptist Church's Senior Choir.

Thanking Brother George A. Beck, H.B.

Since his initiation into our Virginia Omega Alpha chapter at the University of Virginia in 1940, Brother George A. Beck, H.B. has graciously given his time, money, and hard work to Pi Lambda Phi. For many brothers, Brother Beck symbolizes the greatness of Pi Lambda Phi. After following in the footsteps of his brother , Sigmund Beck ‘35 and founding member of Virginia Omega Alpha, he joined Pi Lambda Phi, George served as House Manager, KOE and Rex. He was involved in the purchase and furnishing of the first Pilam house which was then the Hillel House and their current chapter house at 504 Rugby Road in Charlottesville, Virginia. George then served close to 40 years in the U.S. Navy before retiring as a Captain. Prior to joining the professional staff, he was the President of the Pi Lambda Phi Endowment Fund and long term member of the International Executive Council. During this time spent as a Councilman and President of the Endowment Fund, George worked with many of the “Grand Old Men - The Legends” of the Fraternity of whom many we still honor today by annual undergraduate and alumni achievement awards. In 1965 George was awarded the Diamond Chip Council Key, the highest alumni award given by the Fraternity. The following year he became Executive Secretary (Executive Director) of the professional staff. During his tenure on staff, George was instrumental and headed up the founding of close to 60 chapters. Some of his most notable achievements included the 1972 merger with Beta Sigma Rho, and the re-activation of his chapter at the University of Virginia. After retiring in 1992, George stayed very active with the Fraternity and within the National inter-fraternity community. He established and personally funds the Annual George A. Beck and Dorothy Beck Educational Scholarship Awards and served as a Trustee for the Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation. George also was involved with the Fraternity Executive Association and the North-American Inter-Fraternity Conference for many years. He is the recipient of Theta Chi’s Chapman Alter Award for Inter-Fraternal Excellence and he proudly wears the North-American Inter-Fraternity Conference’s Gold Medal, the NIC’s highest award of which he was a former Director. Brother George A. Beck, H.B. has impacted the lives of countless men within and outside of Pilam. He is a shining example of what it means “Not Four Years, But a Lifetime.” Brother Beck, thank you for all that you have done and will continue to do for Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity.

Scholarship Recipients 2012 George A. Beck, H.B. Scholar Award $2,500 Pedro Hipolito-Albarran, NY Phi Lambda at Adelphi University The George A. Beck, H.B. Outstanding Scholar Award is offered annually and is open to all brothers of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity who attend college or university where we have an active chapter. The criteria for this scholarship includes Campus Involvement as well as Fraternal and Community Service. Considered above all else though is the candidate’s academic standing.

Dorothy Beck Virginia Omega Alpha Scholarship Award $2,500 Kamal Charlard, VA Omega Alpha at the University of Virginia With the hope of helping yet another Pilam reach his own personal goals and in honor of his first wife, Dorothy, who passes away several years ago, Brother Beck offers an annual scholarship through the Dorothy Beck Virginia Omega Scholarship Program. This scholarship is restricted to brothers of his chapter and awarded to deserving brothers who have shown excellence in Scholarship, Fraternity Involvement and Sprit along with Community Service.

2012 Stanley L Klunder, H.B. Leadership Scholarship $1,000 Richard Teel, OH Beta Tau at Baldwin Wallace University This award is named for and in honor of, Brother Stanley Klunder, H.B. who was both Past President of the Fraternity and the Educational Foundation,. Brother Klunder has truly exemplified “Not Four Years, But a Lifetime” through his 36 years of service to our Fraternity. This award is determined based on both on Fraternity and Community Service, Academic Achievement and Financial Need. However, this Scholarship additionally weights the Leadership Quality and Talents of the individual and how well he has utilized them. The above scholarship awards are applicable to the recipient’s academic expenses for the upcoming Fall 2012 semester.

Elimination of Prejudice The Elimination of Prejudice creates long lasting community change by addressing the underlying differences between people that prevent progress. By setting the conditions for sensitive societal conversations to take place, the Elimination of Prejudice promotes a better understanding between people.

Success Story: WI Chi Upsilon What began as a small event to promote a better understanding between people through small discussions on Carroll University’s campus quickly became something much more. On Monday, April 16, 2012, after months of planning and working with the university, the WI Chi Upsilon chapter of Pi Lambda Phi revealed their philanthropy event, “The Wall of Prejudice” (the Wall). The Wall was simply a temporary wall, made of wood built in a public place, where people can write every derogatory term they have been called. A few days later, the people who wrote the hateful words, which had negatively impacted their lives, would have the opportunity to tear them and the Wall down. The purpose of the event is to bring traditionally unspoken topics, such as the impact of prejudicial terms, to the forefront of discussion. Reactions from this event ranged greatly from those moved to tears as they reflected upon personal experiences and saw words either used against or by themselves written on the wall to those who felt this demonstration was both inappropriate and would fail to make a lasting difference in the way people treated one another. Although the concept of the event is simple, write words on a wall and then tear it down, the impact of this event was anything but simple. Students, campus administration and faculty, members of the community and even the local and state media took notice as a group of college Fraternity Men stood up against the negative impact prejudice plays in the lives of millions of people. Local Talk Radio Host, Charlie Sykes was one of the first to publically comment about this event. Conversations about this event continued to grow and eventually gained recognition and airtime on Fox6News Milwaukee. Fox6News reported on the Wall twice, once prior to tearing down the Wall and once again reporting on the tearing down of the Wall. Although opinions varied on whether this event was appropriate or would lead to the elimination of prejudice, it did accomplish its primary goal. This goal was to simply fulfill the mission of the Elimination of Prejudice: “creates long lasting community change by addressing the underlying differences between people that prevent progress. By setting the conditions for sensitive societal conversations to take place, the Elimination of Prejudice promotes a better understanding between people.”

Pi Lambda Phi University In order to stay relevant and up to date with the 21st century, Pilam continues to grow and evolve with the times while staying true to same mission and purpose our founders established in 1895. Pi Lambda Phi University is our Fraternity’s New Member Education program and it sets us firmly ahead of the curve when it comes to providing services for our Brothers. Using the most up to date, relevant materials, PLPU is an online learning experience that strives to educate our New Members and Brothers in a fun, interactive, and technologically-savvy way. PLPU will not only continue to ensure that each New Member builds a strong foundation of Pilam knowledge before initiation, but it will also makes the entire process more convenient and accessible for everyone involved. Today’s college students are busier than ever before with jobs, internships, and membership in multiple campus organizations consuming their time. PLPU educational content is organized into natural 18-22 minute chunks leaving each New Member free to divide the week’s material into the number and length of sessions that most easily fits his own schedule. This way he can spend more of his time building bonds with his Brothers and Local Chapter instead of buried in a book or rearranging his entire schedule every week. Think of the possibilities as New Member Meetings can be specifically tailored to each unique class in the most meaningful ways: Group Discussions, Brotherhood and Service activities, as well as the Local Traditions and Customs of their chapter become the focus of New Member Education rather than making it through every page of purple new member manuals. In this way PLPU also eases the programming burden on our New Member Educators. Instead of reinventing the wheel every semester, sifting through crammed binders and overflowing milk crates of papers, or having nothing at all passed down from previous leadership, New Member Educators have all the essential educational materials constantly at their fingertips. They can then act as act as facilitators for their New Member Classes, interacting with each class’ unique personality and addressing their specific needs as they move through the program. Rather than spending all his time writing and organizing lessons, quizzes, and meeting agendas, the New Member Educator is now free to focus instead on welcoming New Members into Pilam and helping them develop relationships with the unique culture, traditions, and Brothers that make up their chapter.
