Fall Recruitment & RCC’s

Fall Recruitment is underway for many of our chapters, while other Fall Recruitment & RCC’s (1) chapters will be getting started very soon. For many Brothers this is the PLPU (2) most stressful time of the year, while for others it’s the most excitNew Undergraduate Rep. ing as you begin building relationElected (3) ships which will hopefully last the rest of your life. Regardless of how Convention 2012 Recap (4) far you and your chapter is into the Recruitment Season, consider Fall 2012 Expansions (5) whether you are doing everything possible to ensure the men you are Elimination of Prejudice (6) bringing into your chapter are the type of men you will be proud to Internship Opportunities (6) call Brothers. One of the best ways to ensure this is by taking the time to build a relationship with someone prior to offering them a bid. Although IFC Rush is a great way to meet interested men whom you may otherwise have never meet, however the opportunities to meet non-Greek men prior to, and even after IFC Rush is over are endless. With all of you either about to begin classes or in the first several weeks of class, take the time to introduce yourself to those you are set beside in each of your classes, if you live in the dorms, introduce yourself to your neighbor, if you belong to a student organization, introduce yourself to the guy who joined this semester. Make an effort to identify the various opportunities where you interact with non-Greek men on campus and take the initiative to introduce yourself. Regardless if your chapter has finished recruitment or weeks from beginning, it’s never the “wrong time” to meet new guys on campus

and start building friendships. For any chapter to reach its full recruitment potential it is necessary to adopt a year-round recruitment strategy. In an effort to aid you and your chapter in reaching its full potential, Pi Lambda Phi has partnered with Phired Up! Productions to share with you proven recruitment strategies which not only help increase the quantity of men joining your chapter, but more importantly the quality. During this semester’s Regional Recruitment Conferences, five (5) of your Brothers will have the opportunity to learn how to meet and identify the non-Greek men on campus, motivate fellow members to do their part and inspire high quality men to join your chapter. Chapters around the country have used Phired Up’s strategies to increase their recruitment and transform their chapters. It’s time to no longer be satisfied with just claiming that we got the “Best Guys on Campus”, and start reaching our full potential and becoming the best chapter on campus. Regional Recruitment Dates/ Locations: (Chapters who will be staying overnight at the hotel will have 5 Members covered by IHQ, chapters who do not require overnight housing are encouraged to bring additional members.) Executive Director Ian Lowe had this to say, “The new members from chapters that took advantage of PLPU last year received a great foundation for their journey as brothers. The feedback we received from those who completed the program was very positive and helped us better frame out the courses we are currently developing. Those courses will be unveiled this fall and are available for initiated brothers who have completed The Path to

Brotherhood. We believe firmly that the education process doesn’t end after the New Member experience, hence our efforts to develop courses for brothers. We can’t wait to hear how our brothers like the next set of courses.” To learn more about PLPU, please check out these Frequently Asked Questions.

Convention 2012 Recap Thank you to all alumni, undergraduates, volunteers, family and friends who made Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity’s 117th Annual Leadership Convention a success. From August 2nd – 5th, in Richmond, VA, Pilams and other volunteers learned from each other during educational programming and enjoyed each other’s company and sotries. The eighty-eight undergraduate members in attendance

learned a wide variety of operational skills which have begun already helping many chapters. The topics covered included Dynamic Recruitment from Matt Mattson, President, Phired Up Productions, risk management, implementing Pi Lambda Phi University, facilitation 101, and many others. After only its second year, since its re-launch during Convention 2010 in Chicago, IL, The Elimination of Prejudice (EoP) and all of its supports had much to celebrate. During the 2011-2012 academic year, our undergraduate chapters raised over $10,000 in support of EoP. Our chapters also hosted many educational events including the Wall of Prejudice and diversity panels. These events took place on campuses across the country helping set the conditions for delicate societal conversations to take place. On Saturday of Convention, Dr. Barbara Lavi, a clinical psychologist and author of “The Wake Up and Dream Challenge,” discussed with our

members the impact of bullying on college campuses. Wrapping up our EoP programming, a panel, which included Big Pi David Temple, Dr. Barbara Lavi, and Natalie Shaak, Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life at Drexel University, fielded questions from undergraduate members about bully, hazing and fraternal trends.

Alpha, Sam Sadler, VA Psi, and Mitch Liss, IL Tau Delta, received Big Pi awards. For a complete list of who won awards this year, please click here.

Capping off a wonderful weekend, the Presidential Awards Banquet was a historical night. With a capacity crowd of nearly two hundred attendees, undergraduates, alumni, honored guests, family and friends celebrated the accomplishments of many chapters and members. Top undergraduate honors were presented to such chapters and colonies as WI Chi Upsilon, Jules Lennard Elimination of Prejudice Award recipient, PA Epsilon Zeta, Isadore Halprin Memorial Scholarship Award recipient, and NY Phi Lambda, George A. Beck Outstanding Chapter Operations Award recipient. Malcolm Kenyatta, Temple University, and Christopher Fuentes, CA Tau, both took home the Rafer Johnson Upsilon Achievement Award.

Fall 2012 Expansions

Many alumni also received prestigious awards. Phil Spence, FL Delta, Romano Muniz, FL Delta, and Mark Kandel, PA Beta Upsilon, were just a few of the alumni who received Certificates of Merit. Thank you again to everyone who helped make Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity’s 117th Annual Leadership Convention such a success.

Pi Lambda Phi is growing! This Fall Semester, members of Pi Lambda Phi’s professional staff are spending time on college campuses building our three newest chapters. Dave Heckathorn and Malcolm Kenyatta are actively recruiting some of the best men at University of Illinois – Champaign-Urbana to re-colonize the IL Tau Delta chapter. Meanwhile, Ian Lowe will be starting this semester at University of Wisconsin-Stout and Patrick Spanner will be leading the expansion at Bloomsburg University. This is a very exciting semester, as our staff members are actively expanding our Creed and Fraternity to three campuses. If you know someone currently attending University of Illinois – Champaign-Urbana, University of Wisconsin-Stout or Bloomsburg University, that would make a great fit for Pi Lambda Phi, let us know! If someone you refer eventually joins Pi Lambda Phi, you will receive a gift with a $50 value. Please contact Dave Heckathorn, at 740-360-8678 or dave.heckathorn@pilambdaphi.org with any leads for potential members for these new colonies.

Elimination of Prejudice The 2011-2012 academic year came with many successes for the Elimination of Prejudice in its second year since its re-launch in summer 2010. Our chapters held many great events including the Wall of Prejudice, diversity panels and other great educational events. All of those events helped set the conditions for delegate societal conversations to take place, and for our members to support our Creed through our international philanthropy. Our chapters also raised over $10,000. To cap off our successes last year, the Elimination of Prejudice was highlighted in “The Wake Up and Dream Challenge” by Dr. Barbara Lavi, a clinical psychologist. With a new school year comes many new exciting opportunities and initiatives. The Elimination of Prejudice is excited to announce the fundraising goals of 19 chapters which totals over $20,000 (end of the article). If your chapter has not yet set a fundraising goal in support of The Elimination of Prejudice, please contact Patrick Spanner at patrick.spanner@pilambdaphi.org to add your chapter to the list of those supporting our Creed through our international philanthropy.
