The Frater
shares updates about the Fraternity and showcases the amazing ways our Brothers are making a difference and how others can help. It is a result and a culmination of the Brotherhood and teamwork all of us experienced as undergraduates. In addition to the Frater, please check the pilambdaphi.org website and the Pi Lambda Phi Facebook page for regular updates. Please share your experiences and thoughts, as we want to share your experiences with our entire Brotherhood.
FROM the IEC PRESIDENT I
t is once again my privilege to address the brothers of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity and I write with the hope that you all had a fantastic 2016 thus far. It is my great pleasure to tell you all about the health and prosperity of Pi Lambda Phi. Under the direction of our Executive Director, our staff continues to lead our chapters in a positive direction and we are seeing unprecedented growth. As the staff focuses on recruitment with the leadership of our chapters, we are seeing immediate and staggering results. Our chapter sizes are increasing and we are graduating more Pilams than ever before. In 2010 Pi Lambda Phi had 800 undergraduate students. Today we can count almost 1,600. We are also growing the number of chapters under the leadership of Ian and his staff. We opened four colonies in 2015 and are in line to open five more this year. The large part of our success is due to understanding the experience today’s undergraduate student is seeking, and making the Pi Lambda Phi experience relevant to them. All new colonies/chapters and a great number of existing chapters operate using a standards based model and hold each other accountable for contributing meaningfully to the chapter. As a result, we are able to recruit more brothers and open new colonies at a blistering pace. For a brief moment I would like to take you back to 1895. Our Founders, Werner, Levy and Fisher, established Pi Lambda Phi with the essential belief that our Fraternity would accept men based on their character and not their skin color
or religious beliefs. Now we return to 2016 and, at the time I am writing to you, the United States of America has twice elected its first non-Caucasian President. Does this mean that our country has finally caught up to the ideals of our Fraternity? Unfortunately, the answer is no, which is why Pi Lambda Phi is as relevant today as it was more than a century ago. Proof that Pi Lambda Phi, our Creed and our philanthropy are as relevant today as ever can, unfortunately, be found throughout the country. Many of you are undoubtedly familiar with the ignorance that transpired at the University of Oklahoma where some members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon were videotaped singing hateful and racist songs. As a result, the University of Missouri President resigned under pressure from African American students because of his failure to address racist and anti-Semitic behavior and actions by other students. It is because of this continuing racism and anti-Semitism that the ideals and beliefs of Pi Lambda Phi must be disseminated with a louder voice than theirs. Brothers, if we live the Creed everyday we will be one step closer to stamping out the vile beliefs and behavior of the ignorant. Fraternally, Jeff Buhler, C.K., President IEC

FROM the EF PRESIDENT
BUILDING the FOUNDATION for OUR FUTURE T
he state of the Pi Lambda Phi Education Foundation is tenuous. Staffed entirely by alumni brothers who give generously of their time and supported by brothers who give generously of their treasure, the Educational Foundation is charged with assuring the longevity of Pi Lambda Phi by creating and prudently managing such financial reserves. Any organization with operating expenses that hopes to endure, must build financial reserves to assure its viability and enable it to take advantage of unexpected opportunities. While much remains to be done, the Foundation has taken great strides toward these objectives.
It has launched an Annual Fund that provided $39,000 in scholarships and training in chapter management for undergraduate brothers in FY 2015. A capital campaign honoring Brother George Beck in currently in the planning stage. The Kovner Corps has been created to help recruit volunteers for all Pi Lambda Phi initiatives. The Elimination of Prejudice Foundation has been created as an independent entity to pursue the ideals of our founders, Brothers Werner, Levy and Fisher, and as a more effective vehicle for soliciting outside contributions to fund its projects. To supplement the efforts of volunteers, relationships have been built with specialists to which necessary work can be outsourced. All of this and other work of the Foundation has been coordinated with that of the International Executive Council under the guidance of the 2009 Strategic Plan of Pi Lambda Phi. This plan is now in the process of being refreshed and updated. For six years, these accomplishments were led by Brother Christopher (Chip) Luman, PA Omega Gamma ’89. Brother Luman recently stepped down as President of the Educational Foundation but will continue as a Trustee. It is my honor to succeed him. He has set a very high standard for me to follow. If Pi Lambda Phi is to succeed and endure, it will be necessary that the Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation succeed as well. This will require the support of all brothers. Please give annually, even $20 would be a great help. Click “DONATE” on the Pilam homepage, www. pilambdaphi.org, and follow the instructions to give online or otherwise. If you would like to become involved as a volunteer in the work of the
4
Foundation or in any other Pilam initiative, email foundation@pilambdaphi.org to tell us about yourself, your interests, and how to get in touch with you. It’s a great time to be a Pilam! Fraternally Yours, Shawn Upchurch, C.K., President Educational Foundation

REMEMBERING GEORGE
GEORGE BECK JOINS CHAPTER ETERNAL A
s many of you know Pi Lambda Phi lost a treasure last year. George Beck joined the chapter eternal at the age of 93, but he left behind an enormous legacy and taught life lessons to an immeasurable number of Pilams. It is not possible to capture what George meant to Pi Lambda Phi in the small amount of words that will fit into this column, or even in the entire publication. It is for this reason that George’s life and incredible contributions to Pi Lambda Phi will be celebrated throughout this year. George belonged to our Virginia Omega Alpha Chapter at the University of Virginia. He
graduated in 1943 and after graduation joined the Navy. After a distinguished naval career, George came back to us in 1966 and began his long tenure as our Executive Secretary/Director. Although Pi Lambda Phi is the first non-sectarian fraternity we did not have many African American brothers, mostly due to a very limited enrollment of black students in American universities. George was a leader when it came to integrating our chapters. In late 1966, a handful of University of Virginia (UVA) students, including African American David Temple, joined Alan Silverman in connecting with George and forming the Pi Lambda Club. This was as an initial step in reestablishing Pi Lambda Phi at UVA. George very shortly arrived in Charlottesville and began to engage the group, as well as the decidedly unenthusiastic Dean of the University. Their first efforts to be accepted as a colony were rejected by the Inter-fraternity Council. The principal reason given was that they "lacked diversity." George and the group were incredulous since only four men of color had enrolled with David in 1965, among 1300 first year students. Even that number was deemed a banner entering number in those times. Indeed, VA Omega Alpha Chapter, Pi Lambda Phi's return to UVA would desegregate their fraternity system whenever approval was won. They were finally chartered as a 30-member fraternity in 1969. Remembering, we honor and give thanks to George, and his
5
historic, Creed in hand leadership at Thomas Jefferson's university, and his very own alma mater. There will be more stories to come and we will do our best to celebrate his life throughout 2016. George Beck was a friend to all, especially Pilam brothers, and we miss him dearly. Rest in peace George. Fraternally, Dan Scott, C.K.
FROM the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR and average chapter size are increasing as well! Over 2/3rds of our new members are also now taking part in our online new member education modules that help complement the information the chapter’s Educator teaches. More chapters are intentionally spreading awareness of our Creed through Elimination of PrejudiceSM programming. We are growing our staff. We began the year with seven full time employees – the largest our staff has ever been! As we experience success in the aforementioned areas, we can reinvest back into our chapters by bringing on more staff to support them. Finally, we are graduating more Pilams. During the 2015-2016 school year we also celebrated the 121st anniversary of our founding at Yale. We celebrated this milestone with a
wonderful regional banquet on Long Island in New York. In addition to the six different chapters that sent undergraduate brothers, members of our International Executive Council, Educational Foundation, and Headquarters team were in attendance. Parents and dates of the undergraduate brothers were also in attendance to celebrate this special occasion with us. There remains much work to do, but there are just so many positive things happening that it is hard to be anything less than excited about the direction our fraternity is heading. The future looks bright! Fraternally, Ian Lowe, IHQ Executive Director
G
reetings brothers! This past year was another successful one for our fraternity. After more than 20 years without growing on the West Coast, the Headquarters colonized at the University of California, Merced with 47 Founding Fathers. Our growth through expansion continues this coming year as we re-open chapters at Drexel University and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as colonizing at the University of Northern Iowa and Purdue University. We continue to have some of our strongest years ever in respect to financial collections. Attendance at both regional conferences and our summer Convention continue to increase every year. PILAM NATION is GROWING T
he launch of Pi Lambda Phi’s current strategic plan in 2010 brought about an intentional effort to grow Pilam Nation. Since 2010, Pilam has colonized on 17 campuses, including the University of Illinois ChampaignUrbana, Roanoke College, St. John’s University, Rutgers University – New Brunswick, Indiana University, Indiana State University, and the University of California, Merced. Campuses already secured for future expansions include the University of Pittsburgh, Drexel University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Purdue University, and the University of California, Davis. A complete list of recent and future expansions is listed to the right. One of our most successful expansions was the re-colonization of IN Alpha Theta at Indiana University in the Fall of 2014. The colony was started with a class of 42 Founding Fathers and after just three semesters operating as a colony, the Brothers of IN Alpha Theta have experienced
great success. They co-hosted a week of events supporting Pilam’s philanthropy, the Elimination of PrejudiceSM, and successfully initiated over 80 additional members, ending this past year with over 100 active Brothers and took home the IFC Chapter of Excellence Award. The International Headquarters is very excited about the growth of Pilam Nation. With more and more partnerships being formed with institutions, there continues to be a bright future for Pilam expansion. If you are interested in learning more about future expansion efforts, or the possibility of re-colonizing an inactive Chapter, please contact me via email at headquarters@pilambdaphi.org. BIG PI SPOTLIGHT
JACK MARSH, BIG PI JOINS LEADERSHIP TEAM
The Frater, the original Pi Lambda Phi magazine, was first published in 1915. Originally, The Frater was published four times annually and was intended to be a lifetime subscription to keep all Pilam Alumni connected to the operation of their Fraternity.
First Amendment and diversity advocate, career journalist and retired foundation executive becomes Educational Foundation Trustee and The Elimination of Prejudice Foundation Chair
Technology has increased the ability to share news in a timely manner through the Fraternity website, email, Facebook, Twitter, and plenty of other social media tools. These new methods allow the Fraternity to stay connected with the entire Brotherhood while reducing the costs to produce and mail a printed magazine. The savings from even a single printing can fund several scholarships and educational programs offered to our undergraduate Brothers. The Trustees constantly review programs for ways to increase the value of your donations.
O
ne of the more impressive stories of how Pilam Alumni Live the Creed is Jack Marsh’s career. In 2014, Marsh retired as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Al Neuharth Media Center at the University of South Dakota. Until March 2013, Jack Marsh served as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute. Marsh founded the American Indian Journalism Institute and among the original organizers of the Crazy Horse Journalism Workshop at Crazy Horse Memorial, which he served as a board member for twelve years. During his time as president of the Diversity Institute, he was as an adjunct professor of journalism at the University of South Dakota and at Belmont University in Nashville. Throughout his career, Marsh exemplified what it meant to Lead Like a Pilam. He dedicated his life to advancing free expression, diversity, civility and compassion. He had a knack for being fair and open-minded. Pi Lambda Phi honored Marsh with the Big Pi lifetime achievement award in 2010. His body of work as a servant leader and non-profit executive enshrined him into the Who’s Who of four other world-class organizations; Baldwin Wallace University, Native American Journalists

Your Donations Your first taste of significant responsibility may have come from Pi Lambda Phi. Your life has probably been shaped by this experience. You grew and matured because of it. You formed friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Please give today to assure that another generation of undergraduate Brothers will have the same opportunities. Through the years, all of us have seen deserving undergraduate Brothers be a part of this Fraternity but also struggle because of merely not having enough money to cope with ever rising tuition costs. There are two ways to give; either online via credit card, or by mail with a check. Your generous donation can make an impact today! Give online at: www.pilambdaphi.org/donation By mail: PLP Educational Foundation 60 Newtown Rd #118 Danbury, CT 06810 We are asking you to join us in funding educational projects. Your gifts can send Brothers to receive leadership training at the Annual Convention, or provide incentive scholarship grants to deserving Brothers.

THE CREED OF PI LAMBDA PHI That all men are created free and equal. That no society of men can flourish unless members of that society are endowed with the opportunities and privileges of freedom. That freedom implies the elimination of prejudice -That the elimination of prejudice means a better understanding ‘twixt men. That it is incumbent upon me to fight for such freedom even with my life. That it is incumbent upon me, in my personal life, to be devoted to the highest standards of honesty and justice. That because my country is dedicated to the highest standards of freedom and justice for all men of all creeds, I hereby pledge allegiance to my country, and to its national symbol.
