PILCHUCK GL ASS SCHOOL Pilchuck Glass School fosters and educates a worldwide community that explores the creative use of glass in art and design. The school is located fifty miles north of Seattle, Washington, in the forested foothills of the Cascade Range, overlooking Puget Sound. Each summer, Pilchuck offers a broad spectrum of courses in the use of glass as an expressive material along with annual residencies for emerging and established artists. Pilchuck’s programs, residencies, and events emphasize experimentation, investigation, teamwork, and personal growth. Students and instructors from all over the world and across the United States come to Pilchuck. Since its founding in 1971 by Dale Chihuly, Anne Gould Hauberg (1917–2016), and John H. Hauberg (1916–2002), Pilchuck has been a creative retreat where artists teach artists in a supportive environment. Pilchuck is open to applications from novice, aspiring, and professional artists with the desire and commitment to learn in any of three dozen one-week to three-week courses offered from May to September. The school also invites renowned artists who typically work in media other than glass to expand their art through collaboration and individual research by working with accomplished glassmakers. Fall and spring residencies provide emerging and established artists working in glass the time and space to develop new processes or create fresh bodies of work through individual and collaborative projects. Pilchuck’s outreach and special events connect our extended community of artists and supporters. Events take place on campus, in Seattle, and throughout the United States and abroad, showcasing the breadth and depth of contemporary art created with glass.

It’s that time of year: the fall weather is in full effect - the air is crisp, and we get ready to once again celebrate the magic that is Pilchuck Glass School. With that, we welcome you to the 40th Annual Pilchuck Auction & Gala! We are gathering this evening in celebration of creativity and community in glass. In its fifth decade, Pilchuck has been recognized as the preeminent organization for the study and creation of works of art in glass. In that time, we have served thousands of aspiring and accomplished artists from around the globe, inspiring creativity. And while Pilchuck is a leading organization for education in glass, we could not be at the forefront of this field without dedication to our core values: to build a community that inspires creativity in the making of art and to develop the personal lives and professional careers of all who step foot on our campus.

When asking students, instructors, and collectors what they find so special about Pilchuck, we often hear “it’s simply magical.” This feeling of a life-changing, transformational experience that we hear about so often is the inspiration for this year’s theme, Spellbound: Celebrating the Magic of Pilchuck. As Pilchuck nears its 50th anniversary, we are reminded of all the magic that has occurred in the past and the hard work that continues in order to remain a leader in the glass world. This year, Pilchuck Glass School commissioned artist Heather Sutherland to design and create art pieces showcased on the Benefactor tables. A Virginia native, Heather Sutherland recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin with an MFA in Glass. Her body of work combines glass and various materials and language to depict concepts of gender, commodity, luxury, and labor. For her most recent exhibition, she collaborated with her partner Tyler Gordon at the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio to perform Savage Beauty. This performance combined a plethora of voices and methods of expression to deconstruct ideas about gender and beauty. She has worked with institutions including Chrysler Museum Glass Studio, Tidewater Community College, Pilchuck Glass School, among others, and taught a few summer courses at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 2018, she was selected as a fellow for the Creative Glass Center of America with WheatonArts. Sutherland has a deep-rooted belief in the importance of community and being able to give back the opportunities granted to her, and for that reason, was pleased to be able to contribute meaningfully to Pilchuckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2018 Auction and Gala. Thank you to artist Kelvin Mason for designing custom Pilchuck Tarot Cards to add to this year’s spellbinding auction experience. Professor Kelvin Mason is a media-independent artist, designer, and educator currently working as the Coordinator of the Graphic Design Program at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He teaches printmaking, design and photography when not at Pilchuck working as the Printshop Coordinator or teaching print-related courses. Mason’s current work involves the digital manipulation of photographs, mapping them onto virtual 3-D surfaces, and translating them back into traditional oil paintings and prints using vitreography and screen printing. He has no cats.

HOW THE AUCTION WORKS

BID CARDS AND BID NUMBERS

LIVE AUCTION

Check in at registration to receive your bid card and bid number. All sales are recorded and tracked using the assigned bid number printed on your bid card. If you registered with a guest, you and your guest will share the same bid number unless otherwise requested.

To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card up high with the number facing toward the auctioneer. Either the auctioneer or a bid spotter can accept your bid. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is merely a fractional advance over the previous bid. The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer is deemed a legal contract with that bidder to purchase the item.

SILENT AUCTION All silent auction bidding will be done this year via paper bid sheets. Silent sections close at staggered times throughout the auction event (see page 2 in the catalog and the evening program for silent auction closing times). In the event of a dispute over a silent auction bid, oral bids may be taken at the discretion of the auctioneerâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but only from those who have already placed bids. The auctioneer will determine the winning bid and the decision will be final. FUND-THE-FUTURE Fund-the-Future is an opportunity to support Pilchuck with a monetary gift. This portion of the evening will take place during the Live Auction (after item number 28). The auctioneer will invite you to hold up your card to pledge your commitment. Hold your card until your bid number is read aloud. You may hold up your auction bid card multiple times to pledge more than one amount. Pay for your pledge along with your other auction purchases at the end of the evening.

You may preview live auction items in the entrance area and on the stage of Fremont Studios prior to the live auction. The preview period ends once the live auction begins. CHECKOUT Cash, personal check, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted as payment for purchases. All purchases are final. Purchased items must be paid for and removed from the premises by the end of the auction gala event. Items that are not removed or are left in the care of the UPS shipper will be shipped to the purchaser at the purchaserâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expense. There are no exchanges or refunds. SALES TAX AND TAX DEDUCTIBILITY No sales tax is charged on purchases as all items have been donated to Pilchuck Glass School. Pilchuck Glass School is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Please consult with your tax advisor for details.

SHIPPING For your convenience, Pilchuck has arranged for the services of UPS to be available the night of the auction. The UPS Store shippers will pack your purchases in a second box and ship items at standard UPS rates, plus a fee for packing materials and labor. You will have the option to purchase insurance for your artwork, which is highly recommended. A UPS Store representative will be available during the auction, and you will be able to sign up for shipment of your purchases at any time before or during the event. Pilchuck Glass School will not ship your auction purchases. If possible, please take all of your purchases home with you. This ensures safe transport for your delicate glass items. Pilchuck volunteers will pack your purchases for you to take home at no extra charge. Once you have made arrangements with the UPS Store, Pilchuck Glass School is not responsible for your artwork and cannot, by shipping company regulations, intervene on your behalf with the shipper or carrier. You must resolve any concerns regarding artwork which are lost or damaged during shipping by contacting the UPS Store directly. Items left at the auction without

shipping instructions will be shipped to the purchaser by Pilchuck at the purchaser’s expense. Aya Oki is a Japanese artist based in San Bernardino, California. Her focus is on the interaction between the medium and the life brought to glass through blowing. Oki completed undergraduate and master’s degrees in Glass at the Aichi University of Education, Japan, and a MFA in Glass from Rochester Institute of Technology. She has been awarded several grants for studying abroad as a researching artist from both Pola Art Foundation and Agency for Cultural Affairs in Japan. Dylan Martinez’s work explores the playful and intriguing properties of glass. While influenced by traditional techniques in glass making, Martinez constantly strives to discover novel approaches to exploit the material and to create a lens to view our world afresh. Inspired by Trompe l’oeil, H2 O/SiO 2 was created to playfully challenge the viewer’s perception. In 2017, Martinez was a finalist for the Stanislav Libenský Award and in 2018 was awarded a top prize at the Milano Vetro -35. He graduated from Ball State University with a MFA in Glass. Cappy Thompson is a Seattle artist known for her painted mytho-poetic narratives on glass using vitreous enamels. An innovator in her field, Thompson has taught and lectured extensively. She has been honored with fellowships from the NEA and Seattle’s Artist Trust, and was the 2005 recipient of the Libenský | Brychtová Award from Pilchuck for her contributions to glass art. Dick Weiss received his BA from Yale University. He has received two NEA craftsman grants, two Hauberg Fellowships and has been an artist-in-residence at Pilchuck. His work is in the collections of the Corning Museum of Glass and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Weiss and Thompson held a 2018 exhibition, “Bird Land,” at Traver Gallery. Claire Kelly graduated with her BFA from Alfred University in 1996. Recently, she was an Artist in Residence at the Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass where she created a new body of work using specialty glass from Effetre, a glass company based in Murano, Italy. She has been a resident artist at the Pittsburgh Glass Center and received the Rosenberg Residency at Salem State University. Kelly was selected as a demonstrating artist at the Glass Art Society Conference in Venice, Italy and a visiting resident artist at the Museum of Glass in the fall of 2018. Ben Edols and Kathy Elliott have been making work collaboratively since 1992. Ben does the glassblowing, Kathy does the glass carving. Their work is in the public collections of The Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Arts and Design in New York, National Gallery of Australia, The Corning Museum of Glass, and Toyama Glass Art Museum, among others. In 2016, their work was showcased in two separate survey shows: the first at Toyama Glass Art Museum; the second at Manly Art Gallery and Museum. One of the founders of the studio-glass movement, Paul Marioni is a Fellow of the American Craft Council and has received three fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts. Sabrina Knowles and Jenny Pohlman’s collaboration celebrated 25 years with an exhibition at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, “SYNCHRONICITY: Twenty-five Years of Collaboration.” Pohlman and Knowles are recipients of Pilchuck, Museum of Glass, and Wheaton Art residencies which have fueled their growth and development. Their work is among museum, private, and public collections nationwide. Both served on the board of Bellevue Arts Museum 2009-12; Pohlman served as board chair for Pratt Fine Arts Center 2016-18. Fascinated with the concept of the Soul, Christina Bothwell’s ongoing spiritual interests and pursuits run parallel to the narrative in her pieces. She studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before teaching herself how to work with ceramics, and then cast glass. Bothwell has had eleven solo exhibitions of her work since 2006, most recently at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Her sculptures are in the public collections of the Cincinnati Museum of Art, the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, SMOG (Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Glass Art), the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung Foundation, the Smithsonian Museum of Art’s Archives of American Art, and The Corning Museum of Glass, among others. Martin Štefánek utilizes the richly visual qualities of metallurgical colored glass to formulate the exotic and mythic animals that inspire him. In 2000, Štefánek founded his own glass studio in Desná, Czech Republic. He has worked on several prestigious projects, including a glass sculpture gifted to Pope John Paul II. Starting in 2001, Štefánek began cooperating with Petr Seifert on creating reproductions of historical glass pieces for the royal and prominent aristocratic houses of Europe. Micah Evans is an internationally acclaimed artist known for blurring the lines between art, craft, form, and function. He began working with glass in 1999 and has taught at a variety of world-renowned institutions, including The Corning Museum of Glass, Penland School of Crafts, Pilchuck Glass School, and others. Currently residing in Austin, Texas, he draws much inspiration from the culture and landscape. His latest works are focused around themes of history, memory, and erosion. MATYAS PAVLIK

Born in Czech Republic, Matyas Pavlik was raised between the United States and Mexico. Both parents being glass sculpture artists, he was exposed to glass and art early on. While studying graphic design at University of San Francisco, a semester abroad at Prague University of Art, Architecture & Design exposed him to the boundless possibilities of kiln casting. The focus of Pavlik’s work lies in exploring the medium of glass through varied density within abstract shapes, the way light gets broken, redirected, or absorbed, while using an organic, yet vibrant color palette. Studio Salvadore is a collaborative glass production team headed by Muranese brothers Mattia and Marco Salvadore. As young boys, they began working with their father, Davide, in the studio Campanol & Salvadore. In 2003, Mattia assisted Pino Signoretto, Franco Toffolo, and Dante Marioni at the international workshop organized by Centro Studio Vetro. He has studied with a variety of Muranese Maestri, attended Pilchuck Glass School, and worked at the famous Venini glass factory. Marco presented at the 2009 Glass Art Society Conference and has travelled around the world teaching glassworking techniques. Therman Statom is a sculptor, glass artist, and painter most notably known as a pioneer of the contemporary glass movement. Much of the latter half of Statom’s career has focused on the importance of educational programming within the arts. He has taken a deep interest in employing workshops as a catalyst for social change. Lino Tagliapietra is an inﬂuential Italian glass artist who is recognized throughout the world for his skills and talents. Alix Cannon grew up in Evergreen, Colorado. Anna Skibska graduated from the Painting program at the Academy of Art in Wroclaw, Poland in 1984. Since then, she has presented 58 individual exhibitions all over the world. Skibska is known for her enormous glass sculptures and signature flameworking technique of ‘stretching’ glass rods and creating slender and transparent threads. In 1994, she began teaching creative glass at Pilchuck Glass School, later emigrating to Seattle. In 2004, Pratt Fine Arts Center named the Anna Skibska Flameworking Studio in her honor. Growing up in the flatlands of Toledo, Ohio, Brennan Kasperzak developed a fascination for mountains and snow during family trips. He began his glass career in 2002, going on to receive a BFA in Glass from Ohio State University in 2007. Since then, he has studied, assisted, and taught internationally; working with artists Therman Statom, Chuck Lopez, and Davide Salvadore, among others. Kasperzak’s current body of work combines his most driving passions: mountains and glass, and involves the creation of life-sized glass snowboards. In removing the functionality of the snowboard by creating it in glass, Kasperzak allows the snowboard to become his canvas, and the sculptural object acts as a vessel for his voice rather than his body. Daryl Smith is a Seattle native with more than twenty years experience making glass. In addition to creating his own pop art and lowbrow-inspired artwork, he has worked with the best glassmakers in the world as a gaffer at Chihuly Studios. Smith has also been a gaffer at Pilchuck Glass School many times and has developed an intimate knowledge of the material. Ryan Blythe, born in Ohio, has been in the Puget Sound region since 1996 working with glass. He studied glass at Rochester Instituted of Technology in New York and has traveled internationally to study and work with masters of the craft, including Dale Chihuly. In 2013, Blythe founded The Rainier Glass Studio, located in the Old Rainier Brewery building in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood.

Rob Stern began working with glass in 1988, earning a BFA in Glass and Sculpture at San Francisco State University and MFA in Glass Sculpture at University of Miami. Stern has studied with the most notable glass artists and masters throughout the world and has attended Pilchuck Glass School for twenty-seven consecutive summers. He conducts workshops internationally and has been a professor at The University of Miami and the University of Texas-Arlington. GLOSSARY OF GL ASS TERMS

BITS Pieces of molten glass snipped off a blowpipe or punty and applied hot to a glass form. CANE Thin rods of glass, usually with a twisted pattern in multiple colors used to add pattern to blown glass. DICHROIC Manufactured glass that is one color when seen by reflected light and another color when light shines through it. The effect can be achieved by applying a dichroic coating to glass that otherwise would not have this property. ELECTROPLATE The process of adhering metal to glass by dipping the glass into an electrically charged solution. ETCH To create a design by cutting away the surface of finished glass with a tool or by treating it with acid. FLAMEWORKING OR LAMPWORKING The process of using a gas-fueled torch or lamp to heat glass rods for sculpting, blowing, and beadmaking. FUSE To melt together two or more pieces of glass in a kiln. GRAAL A glassblowing technique wherein a thick “blank” or core form is blown, usually with two or more layers of color. The blank is then engraved, bringing out the underlying color, much as is done with a cameo. The engraved blank is subsequently reheated and blown to its full shape. HOT CAST To ladle hot glass from a furnace into a mold made of sand, steel, or plaster. INCALMO A glassblowing process that joins two or more bubbles of hot glass together, resulting in defined bands of color in a vessel or object. INSCISO A technique for patterning the surface of glass by creating deep incisions, usually with hand-engraving tools. KILN A high-temperature electric oven used for casting, fusing, and slumping glass. KILNCAST The use of a mold, usually plaster, filled with crushed glass, which is melted in a kiln to produce a solid glass form. LAMINATE To use heat or glue to join pieces of glass.

MURRINE Patterned glass cane cut into sections in order to form small disks that are used in decorating glass or constructing glass forms. OVERLAY A thin layer of clear or colored glass on the outside of a piece. OFF-HAND Formed freehand on the end of a punty or blowpipe. No mold is used. PÂTE DE VERRE From French, meaning “glass paste.” The paste is made from crushed glass and enamel paint. It is applied to the surface of a mold and fired in a kiln at high temperature. ROLL-UP In this process, multiple pieces of flat glass are fused into a tile. The tile is reheated, rolled up onto a gather, and then blown into a three-dimensional object. SANDBLAST To blow or blast sand onto a piece, etching away layers of glass. Masking is used to create patterns. SANDCAST To ladle hot glass into a formed mold made of specialized sand. SCAVO Corrosive chemical material applied to the surface of hot glass that gives the final piece a matte finish. SCRUFFITTO The technique of adding color to the surface of glass and then scratching it away, causing a reverse image to appear. SHARD A small fragment of glass. Colored shards may be melted into a piece for decoration. SLUMP To heat a sheet of glass in a kiln until it is soft enough to assume the shape of a mold without becoming molten. SMALTI A soft, intensely colored Venetian glass that is chipped into squares for use in creating traditional mosaics. THREADS Thin strands of glass, usually colored, that may be added to the glass in a variety of ways for different effects. VITREOGRAPHY The process of creating a print from a glass plate.

LAMPWORKING See flameworking.

WRAP A strand of glass, typically but not always of a contrasting color, applied hot to a vessel.

LOST WAX A method of casting whereby a wax or waxcoated model is embedded in clay and then baked so that the wax melts and is “lost,” leaving a mold into which hot glass is poured. The mold must be broken in order to retrieve the cast object.

ZANFIRICO A multi-colored cane made by gathering a bundle of rods of different colors, and heating it until it is soft. The bundle is attached to two pontils and elongated by drawing. At the same time, the bundle is twisted to produce a spiral pattern. Zanfirico is a synonym for vetro a retorti.

MOLDBLOWN Glass formed into a shape by being blown into a mold, typically made of wood, metal, or plaster.
