A locally created mural is was unveiled recently at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR). The mural, titled Everybody has the Right, is made up of 168 canvas tiles individually created by students from all 77 schools in the Winnipeg School Division. Together, the tiles, inspired by lessons the students have learned and experienced regarding human rights, make an 8-foot by 12-foot (2.4 by 3.7 metre) mural.

Merry Christmas to all It’s Christmas time again.

Time to enjoy the company of family and special friends who are important to us. It is also the time when everyone, believer or not, openly shows their kindness and compassion, especially for those who are in need. Love, peace, joy and goodwill to all – this seems to be the universal message that makes the Christmas season extra special.

One wonders though, why this universal message appears to have its own start date and expiry date. Once the holiday season begins, many people become more generous, kind and understanding toward others. And yet, once the festive season ends, the majority goes back to the old habits that may or may not be less kind. But then,

it is rather challenging to retain this outlook in all situations and toward those who seem to make it their purpose in life to behave in precisely the opposite manner.

One needs a strong character to be able to co-exist with others and still uphold the meaning of the Christmas message of love, peace, joy and goodwill to all.

As I grow older in years and wisdom, I believe that I must continue to learn how to understand and be compassionate to even the most despicable and spiteful. It is good for my health if I wish to live a happy and healthy life. Let us all remember the Golden Rule: “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.”

Then, maybe we can all enjoy the universal message that Christmas

brings.

This Christmas let us all take time out from our busy schedule to appreciate all the good things in our lives and the wonderful people around us. Let us be grateful for friendships that are

unconditionally given to us. That’s the best gift of all.

Duterte, is advocating, but it is useful to remember that in 2008 then-Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr. had proposed a resolution that sought to adopt a Federal Presidential Bicameral form of government.

Joint Resolution No. 10, which had the support of 13 senators, would have created 11 autonomous regions and 11 centres of finance and development in the Philippines. Under the proposal, there would be 11 states plus one federal administrative region – Metro Manila – as the seat of the federal government.

The other states would be Northern Luzon (with Tuguegarao as capital), Central Luzon (Tarlac City), Southern Tagalog (Tagaytay), Mimaropa (Mamburao), Bicol (Legazpi), Eastern Visayas (Catbalogan), Central Visayas (Toledo), Western Visayas (Iloilo City), Northern Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro), Southern Mindanao (Davao City), and Bangsamoro (Marawi).

At the House of Representatives, Rep. Monico O. Puentevella filed House Concurrent Resolution No. 15 on May 7, 2008, which supported Senate Resolution No. 10.

One of the staunchest advocates of federalism, former University of the Philippines President Jose Abueva, formed the Citizens’ Movement for a Federal Philippines (CMFP) to campaign for a shift to a federal of government. In a paper titled Some Advantages of Federalism and Parliamentary Government for the Philippines (Revised for June 29, 2005), he listed eight advantages

Federalism in the Philippines?

All of a sudden the buzzword in Mindanao is federalism. To a large extent, this is due to the proposed enactment of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), which principally outlines the sharing of wealth and political power between the central and regional governments. Many political leaders in Mindanao – especially Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte – are taking their cue from this and are saying that if the Moro people can be given autonomy, why not the rest of the country through a federal form of government?

But what is federalism, and why do its supporters believe it is the answer to the problems of the country?

First a definition: According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it is “a political system that binds a group of states into a larger, noncentralized, superior state while allowing them to maintain their own political identities.”

“Certain characteristics and principles are common to all successful federal systems: a written constitution or basic law stipulating the distribution of powers; diffusion of power among the constituent elements, which are substantially self-sustaining; and territorial divisions to ensure neutrality and equality in the representation of various groups and interests,” the dictionary adds.

There are many forms of federalism, with the US model perhaps being the most familiar to Filipinos. It is unclear what the recent Mindanao Leaders’ Summit on Federalism, organized

of the federal system: 1. The Federal Republic will build a just and enduring framework for peace through unity in our ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity, especially in relation to Bangsa Moro or Muslim Filipinos and our lumad/indigenous peoples.

2.

Decentralization and devolution cannot move further under the old unitary system despite avowed goals expressed in the 1987 Constitution and the Local Government Code.

3. The Federal Republic will empower our citizens by enabling them to raise their standard of living and enhance their political awareness through their participation and efficacy in elections and the making and carrying out of government decisions at the regional and local levels.

4. The Federal Republic will improve governance by challenging and energizing state and local leaders, entrepreneurs, and citizens around the country to take hold of their destiny.

Federalism will release them from the costly, time-consuming, stifling, and demoralizing effects of excessive central government controls and regulation in our traditional unitary system.

5. The Federal Republic will thus stimulate and hasten the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural development.

6. Federalism, together with parliamentary government, will improve governance by promoting the development of strong, united, disciplined, and program-oriented political parties that are responsible and accountable to the people for their conduct and performance in and out of power.

7. Metro Manila State will

have a unified political structure that will integrate its various cities and municipalities under the state assembly that combines legislative and executive powers and authority. Unlike the state assemblies of the other states, the mayors in Metro Manila will constitute the Metro Manila State Assembly. The Metro Manila Governor and State Cabinet will direct and coordinate the various metropolitan functions and services.

8. Gradually, the Federal Republic and its parliamentary government will broaden and deepen democracy.

The CMFP had proposed the holding of a plebiscite early in 2007 to ratify the proposed revision of the 1987 Constitution, so that the election in May 2007 would be for the officers in the 1987 Constitution as revised.

Unfortunately, it is precisely the need for amendments to the Constitution that doomed the proposal. There was massive opposition to Charter Change (Cha-Cha) because most people believed it would open the Constitution to other amendments – specifically the removal of term limits for elected officials, which would benefit then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. She was then already becoming unpopular because of charges of corruption and of cheating in the 2004 Presidential election, and she was widely believed to be positioning herself to be the country’s leader even after her term’s end in 2010.

Look beyond your wrinkles Dear Ate Anna: I am in my late forties and I am noticing many changes to my body. Every week I see new wrinkles on my face and other places! Even the shape of my body is changing. Is there anything I can do to stop this? I am worried that my husband will think I am an old lady.

Claire Dear Claire, Most people don’t like to think about growing older. Once we have noticed the changes you talk about, we are forced to accept the fact that we are in a new stage of life.

It is natural for women to feel some “panic” when they look in the mirror and notice wrinkles and other changes. North American culture is very focused on looking youthful and thin. A woman may start to think more about the media messages that promise to take years away by using a product or having surgery.

If she is strongly influenced by these messages, she may start to judge herself in a negative way.

What we are really talking about is body image. This is the mental picture we each have of our body – along with our feelings and thoughts about it.

Body image is affected by many factors including TV, movies, and advertising, as well as comments made by friends and family.

There are two ways to think about our bodies. If we have an ornamental view we tend to focus on how our body appears to

others, judging it on how it looks.

The problem with this viewpoint is that we are more sensitive to the opinions of other people and the media images of body “perfection.”

If we see our body in a functional way (instrumental view) we appreciate what it does for us every day and acknowledge the importance of keeping it healthy. With this attitude, we can be more in control of our feelings about ourselves.

Ate Anna believes that having an instrumental body view can help a woman feel more positive about the changes of aging.

Claire, try writing a list of at least four things that you like about your body. For example, perhaps you like your hair, the shape of your eyes, or you think you have pretty feet.

Secondly, there are things you can do to help your body stay strong and healthy. Increase the amount of physical activity you do each day. The rate at which the body burns calories slows down with age, so more physical activity may also help you control your weight. It can be as simple as walking places instead of driving in the car or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Many women find they enjoy trying new activities like tai chi, swimming, yoga or dance lessons – maybe you can even get your husband to join you.

Sponsorship of parents and grandparents in 2015 – more of the same The sponsorship of parents and grandparents is being reopened on January 2, 2015. The program guidelines appeared on the federal website along with the warning that no application would be accepted before this date. The warning is apropos because there are a limited number of spots available and these are allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis.

It is important to note that in 2014 the 5,000 cap was met within the first three weeks. It’s going to be just as competitive in 2015.

The number of spots for 2015 is a point of contention.

In a new release on October 31, 2014 entitled Reuniting More Families, Citizenship and Immigration Canada announced, “up to 20,000 spaces for Parents/ Grandparents will be available.”

Good news then but bad news now. The current federal web site for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents, just six weeks later, has removed any mention about an increased cap over 2014. It remains unchanged: “Citizenship and Immigration Canada will accept new

applications to sponsor parents and grandparents starting January 2, 2015. Applications received before January 2, 2015 will not be accepted and will be returned to the applicant. 5000 complete applications will be accepted for 2015.” The challenge has been put forth to potential sponsors and the race is officially on.

I do not know why Citizenship and Immigration Canada changed its mind about increasing the cap to 20,000 but all potential applicants should be warned that only complete applications submitted by qualified sponsors will be accepted. In addition, based the experience of 2014, you have little more than the first year weeks in 2015 to submit the necessary application.

For the sponsors who want to go it alone I recommend that you search out the guide and forms for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents including: Document Checklist (IMM5771), Application to Sponsor, Sponsorship Agreement and Undertaking (IMM1344), Financial Evaluation for Parents

and Grandparents Sponsorship (IMM5768), as well as the familiar Generic Application Form for Canada (IMM0008), Schedule A Background/ Declaration (IMM5669), Additional Dependent Declaration ((MM0008) and Additional Family Information (IMM5406). All these documents must have original signatures of the applicant. Scanned copies of signature are not accepted.

In terms of sponsors they must meet a number of requirements including income levels. The financial requirement for the upcoming 2015 program is

similar to that required in 2014.

Sponsors must demonstrate – with the inclusion of an original Option C Printout for the three previous taxation years – that they meet the income levels, which is based on the Low Income Cutoffs plus 30 per cent. See the table on this page.

It is possible for eligible sponsors to submit applications in time but there are always pitfalls and note that there is no allowance for error. If you make any mistakes or do not provide the exact information required, the application will be returned to you. The spaces are very

limited and the demand almost impossibly high. For those who need help, now is the time to consult with immigration lawyers or licensed consultants.

Christmas and holiday feng shui Holidays are special times to gather family and friends together to enjoy festivities, gifts, and special foods. This is especially true at Christmas when we seek to share the bounty of the year by giving gifts and celebrating with those closest to us.

It is a fun and beautiful time of year when homes and shops are decorated in glittering lights and bountiful greenery.

Decorating for the holidays is also great feng shui because it puts attention – and intention — on your home.

We seek to create warm and beautifully decorated homes that appeal to both grown up and children’s tastes alike. Children enjoy the festive ornaments and decoration of Santa, the reindeer, the North Pole, and the arrival of the Baby Jesus.

Create a feng shui Christmas this year for fun and for the greater intention and meaning that it can bring to your holidays. It’s a wonderful way to incorporate more mindfulness as you make your holiday preparations.

1. Clear out unused items and toys.

This isn’t the fun part, but it is important. Good feng shui requires room for chi to circulate — and to grow, we must have

room.

So, before all the new gifts and things come into the house, take a half hour to go room-to-room and clearing out old, broken, or unused items.

Then, donate what’s usable to charity and throw away the rest.

You will feel much better about all the additional things coming into the house if some of the old clutter is removed first. OK, now that’s out of the way…

2. Wrap gifts according to who receives them.

Wrap all the gifts according to colour and recipient using the feng shui guidelines. Not only will the gifts be appropriate to the person, they will also be easy to identify and quick to pull out from under the tree!

Father/Man: Gold paper Mother/Woman: Red or purple paper Children: Silver or purple paper Boys/Sons: Blue or green paper Girls/Daughters: Red or pink paper Grandparents: Gold or purple paper Someone who has been ill: Green paper (with or without nature designs such as trees, pine boughs, deer)

Neighbours/Friends/Coworkers: Red 3. Place and decorate your tree according to what you want to achieve.

A lighted Christmas tree is a large and powerful object that can be used for directing energy toward something you desire.

What’s your heart’s wish? More money?

Put your tree in the Southeast corner of your living room or home and decorate accordingly.

Maybe you’d like a husband or new man in your life? Place the tree in the NW corner of your home or living room. Simply more family harmony?

Then decorate in a mixture of red and gold.

These two colours bring harmony and happiness wherever they are placed.

Whatever it is that you want, just be sure to observe the feng shui decorating guidelines in the next tip.

4. Decorate your Christmas tree with feng shui When decorating your tree for the holiday, consider using feng shui colours according to the direction that you place the tree.

Reflections from a mentee Since I officially began teaching, I have been offered opportunities to mentor others.

I, myself, was a mentee. The mentor I chose happened to be the previous teacher of my classroom before me. She helped me set the pace for, discover, and apply my educational pedagogy. I’m learning now that mentorship is not about the amount of years spent teaching; mentorship is, in fact, about building positive and supportive relationships with colleagues. It’s paying your knowledge and experiences

forward and helping other educators find their footing in the field.

Baby steps Like any field, the journey to becoming a mentor myself required receiving mentorship from another individual. As a mentee, I received advice that, at the time, seemed profound.

My agenda is organized chaos.

It is a delicate balance between deadlines, opportunities, and functions. It didn’t always used to be this way. There was a time when my agenda was strictly

academic – all school-related goals and school-centred events.

My mentor’s first comment to me was to remember that teaching “is just your job.” Pardon me? I had undergone an honours degree in Arts and a two-year afterdegree Education program to find out that this is just my job?

She was right. She was a woman who raised two sons and had an active life outside of school.

And she spoke the absolute truth.

In retrospect, I laugh at what must have been the look on my face as I let that idea sink in. All that work, all that planning to achieve my goals, only to realize that it is not something that defines me. It is not the only thing that should occupy my mind and time. It is a fraction of my life, and does not hold as much weight as others.

That was it.

This simple piece of advice changed the framework in which I viewed my entire career that I pulled through all those years of university for.

It is this same advice that I give to those I mentor. This career is important, but it is not the only important thing in your life.

Find your balance Like any career, it is crucial for new teachers to master that delicate balance. Not doing so risks an early burning out of young talent. A wise individual once said, “you can’t do a good job if your job is all you do.”

Take time for yourself. Exercise.

Meditate. Read a book out of your own interests, at your own pace. Sing. Dance. Go out for dinner. Do not abandon or neglect

parts of yourself for just your career. You are worth more than you think!

Parent tip: juggling act The same concept of balance applies to students. We take for granted how much they are required to think and work at school. Make sure you take time out to encourage your child to pursue interests. This could take the form of playing an instrument, joining a sports team, pursuing the arts. Whatever their interests are, remember that a learner is well rounded. They flourish best when they’re not just learning in the academic sense. Let them go, and let them grow!

5. Place religious articles where they will benefit you.

Place nativity scenes and religious figurines in the centre of the living room or home.

Figures of the Three Kings or Santa can go in the northwest, as can a crèche. The Three Kings represent helpful people traveling to visit the Baby Jesus. In feng shui, the Three Kings and Santa Claus represent benefactors who can bestow gifts to you as well.

6. Light up your foyer for a welcoming entry — and more opportunities!

Dental mission to the Philippines WINNIPEG – Dr. Tom Colina and a team of 20 other dentists and support staff will travel to the Philippines on December 18 on a humanitarian mission to provide dental care for the underprivileged.

Sent by the Kindness in Action (KIA) organization, the team, consisting of 14 members from Winnipeg, four from Vancouver, two from Edmonton and one from Calgary, will work in two locations until January 1, 2015.

The first work site is the Answering the Cry of the Poor (ANCOP) Kapatid Community Village in Caloocan, Metro Manila. According to Dr. Colina, the need for dental care is anticipated to be intense there as KIA also serviced the nearby ANCOP Village in Quezon City during a mission from December 2006 to January 2007.

The second work site is an ANCOP village in Ormoc City, Leyte, still recovering from Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), which ravaged the island in November 2013 causing massive destruction and thousands of fatalities.

KIA is an initiative started in Winnipeg that sends teams to provide humanitarian dental health services in underprivileged countries, most recently in Guatemala City, Guatemala in March 2013. The organization also conducted a mission in the ANCOP Canada Village in Quezon City and in the Winnipegsponsored ANCOP/Gawad Kalinga Village in Marikina, Metro Manila.

$205,000 for Youth Employment Network Program Winnipeg – The Alicia Rae Career Centre Inc. is receiving more than $205,000 from the Federal Skills Link program to help youth facing barriers to employment get the skills and knowledge they need to find jobs.

The Skills Link program is a part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES), which helps youth obtain career information, develop

“Matagal nilang pinag-aralan ang panggagamot. Marami na rin silang karanasan. Bago rin ibenta ang gamot ay dumadaan muna sa maraming pagsubok,” katwiran niya.

Alam niya iyon dahil mahilig siyang magbasa ng mga artikulo tungkol sa siyensiya, lalo na sa medisina. Inaalam niya ang mga bagong natutuklasan tungkol sa mga sakit, mga bagong gamot at mga paraan ng panggagamot.

Hindi siya naniniwala sa herbal products kahit pa sumikat ang mga ito at maraming gumagamit.

“Hindi pa naman napapatunayan ng siyensiya na mabisa talaga ang mga iyan.

Nakita mo naman, me nakasulat na ‘No Approved Therapeutic Claims’ ang mga iyan,” katwiran niya.

GAYON na lamang ang panlulumo ni Cenon nang malaman niyang nasa Stage 3 na ang kaniyang colorectal cancer.

Natitiyak din niyang tutulong kahit paano ang mga kapatid niya kung wala talaga siyang gagastahin.

Kahit noong matuklasan pa lamang mula sa colonoscopy na may bukol ang bituka niya, agad siyang nagpaopera.

Bukod sa magastos, alam niyang matagal, mahirap at masakit ang gamutan sa kaniyang sakit. Wala pang katiyakan kung gagaling siya.

Gayunman, handa siyang magbaka-sakali. Gusto niyang humaba pa ang kaniyang buhay.

Ang mahalaga ay may pag-asa pa siyang gumaling.

‘Buti nga siya, naisaloob niya.

Kailangan lamang magtiis ng hirap at sakit sa pagpapagamot.

Maraming may sakit na kanser na hindi malaman kung saan kukunin ang perang gagamitin para sa pagpapaopera, chemotherapy at radiotherapy. Naawa siya sa mga iyon.

Todo-suporta ang misis niya.

Ipinagmamaneho siya nito sa pagtungo niya sa ospital.

Ipinagluluto siya nito ng mga pagkaing sinabi ng oncologist na makabubuti sa kaniya. Ibinibili siya ng mga gulay at prutas. Lagi siyang inaaliw nito. Pinalalakas ang kaniyang loob. Hindi ito nagrereklamo.

Gayundin ang kaniyang tatlong anak. Laging pinalalakas ng mga ito ang kaniyang loob.

Kahit ang mga magulang at mga kapatid niya ay laging nangungumusta. Pinalalakas din ng mga ito ang kaniyang loob.

Pagpapagaling lamang talaga ang iniintindi niya.

Iniingatan niya nang husto ang sarili habang sumasailalim sa chemotherapy. Mahina ang kaniyang immune system dahil sa gamot. Isa pa, binilinan siya ng oncologist na: “Mas maganda kung tuluy-tuloy ang chemo at radiation.” Puwedeng matigil ang mga ito kung magkakasakit siya.

Sa hapon, kapag lumalamig na ang hangin habang nag-uupo siya sa terrace ay pumapasok na agad siya. Nagsusuot siya ng mask kapag nagtutungo siya sa mga lugar na maraming tao, tulad ng ospital.

Husto siya sa pahinga.

Naglalakad din siya kahit sa loob lamang ng bahay nila bilang ehersisyo.

Maingat siya sa pagkain. Ang kinakain lamang niya ay ang mga pagkain na sinabi ng oncologist na makabubuti sa kaniya, tulad ng isda, gulay at prutas. Kung kumakain man siya ng karne ng baka, kaunti lamang. Hindi siya kumakain ng baboy. Ganap din niyang iniwasan ang processed food, gaya ng ham at hotdog.

Tulad sa maraming may sakit na kanser, kumakain din siya ng guyabano. Gayunman, hindi nangangahulugang ganap siyang naniniwala sa sinasabi ng mga nagbebenta ng herbal products na mas mabisa ito nang kung ilang doble kaysa sa chemotherapy.

Oo, inaamin niyang gusto niyang nakatutulong nga ito sa paggaling ng kanser niya.

Isa sa mga ito ay ganito ang kuwento sa kaniya: “Me kakilala ako na nagkaroon din ng ganyang sakit. Stage 4.”

“Stage 4! Kumusta na siya ngayon?”

“Awa ng Diyos, buhay pa rin naman.”

“Buhay pa! Ilang taon na ba mula nang matuklasan ang kanser niya?”

“Mahigit sampung taon na.”

Humanga siya. Ayon sa kaniyang oncologist, kapag buhay pa rin ang isang tao pagkalipas ng sampung taon makaraang matuklasang may colorectal cancer ito, talagang magaling na ito. Parang hindi na nagkasakit ng kanser ang taong iyon, sabi pa ng oncologist.

“Ano ang ginawa?”

“Me nilaga siyang ugat na galing sa gubat. Iniinom niya ang pinaglagaan.”

Nalungkot siya sa narinig.

Inisip niyang baka hatol ng albularyo ang ugat na iyon. “Baka me bulung-bulong ‘yan…” sabi niya.

“Wala raw.”

“Talaga?”

“Oo.” “Hindi na siya nag-chemo at radiotherapy?”

“Ginawa niya ang mga sinasabi ng duktor. Pero ininom pa rin niya ang pinaglagaan ng ugat na iyon.”

“Hindi kaya gumaling talaga siya sa panggagamot na sinasabi ng duktor?”

“Ang ugat na iyon daw talaga ang nagpagaling sa kaniya.

Inirerekomenda pa nga niya iyon sa mga nagkakasakit na tulad ng sa kaniya.”

“Paanong paglalaga ang ginagawa niya?”

“Hinuhugasan muna. Tapos, hinahati-hati. Saka, inilalaga.”

Nang makaalis na ang kaibigan, mataman siyang nagisip. Natitiyak niyang hindi pa sinasang-ayunan ng siyensiya ang ugat na iyon bilang gamot.

Gayunman, gumaling pa rin ang taong iyon kahit nasa Stage 4 na ang colorectal cancer!

Ganap ang paniniwala niyang makatwiran lamang na sundin ang medisina. Talaga namang napakaraming maysakit na gumaling at nadugtungan ang buhay dahil sa medisina.

Gayunman, sa pagbabasa na rin niya ng mga artikulo sa medisina, nalaman niyang laging may nababago sa mga paniniwala tungkol sa mga sakit, mga gamot at mga paraan ng panggagamot dahil sa mga bagong natutuklasan.

Marami pang hindi alam ang tao, siyensiya na rin ang nagpapatunay.

Malay niya, baka talagang nakapagpapagaling ang ugat na iyon. Hindi pa lamang natutuklasan ng siyensiya. Sino nga ba ang makapagsasabi?

Tiyak namang hindi lason iyon. Hanggang ngayon ay buhay pa ang taong uminom ng pinaglagaan niyon.

Magiging dakila siya at tatawaging Anak ng Kataastaasan.” Pinaliwanag ng anghel kung paano ito mangyayari at sinigurado niya sa kaniya na wala siyang dapat ikabahala. Kaya’t buong pusong pumayag si Maria sa plano ng Diyos sa kaniyang buhay.

Nang malaman din ni Jose na ang kaniyang nobya ay buntis bago

maibsan ang matindi niyang pangungulila sa kaniyang ina. ** Kung dati’y kumpleto ang pamilya Revilla tuwing Linggo nang tanghali sa PNP Custodial Center, ngayon ay nandoon na sila araw-araw. Alam nila kung gaano kalungkot ngayon si Senador Bong Revilla dahil sa pagkakabasura ng hiling niyang pagpipiyansa.

“Parang ihinanda na siya, masakit man, para bang naging magaan na para sa kaniya ang pagtanggap, dahil prepared na siya spiritually,” sabi ni Rowena.

Kaya’t buong pusong sumunod si Jose sa pinag-utos ng Diyos Mababasa din natin sa biblia noong pinanganak si Hesus, may mga pastol sa isang lugar sa Bethlehem na nagpupuyat sa pagbabantay ng kanilang mga tupa. Biglang lumitaw sa harapan nila ang isang anghel ng Panginoon at lumaganap sa paligid nila ang nakasisilaw na kaningningan ng Panginoon at natakot ang mga pastol nang gayon na lamang. Pero sinabi ng anghel sa kanila “Huwag

kayong matakot. Ako’y may dalang mabuting balita para sa inyo na magbibigay ng malaking kasiyahan sa lahat ng tao. Dahil ipinanganak ngayon sa bayan ni David ang inyong tagapagligtas, ang Kristong Panginoon.”

Kung paanong nalalaman ng Diyos ang takot sa puso ni Maria, ni Jose at ng mga Pastol, alam din ng Diyos ang takot at mga bagay na inaalala natin ngayon. At kung paanong nagbigay siya ng mabuting balita sa mga tao noon, may magandang balita rin siya sa atin ngayon. Hindi nag-iba ang mabuting balita. Ang mabuting balita ay ang pagdating ni Hesus sapagkat siya lamang ang siyang magliligtas at tutulong sa ating mga problemang hinaharap. Siya ang may kakayanang magbigay sa atin na karunungan at katapangan para harapin natin ang mga ito. Siya rin ang nagbibigay ng kapayapaan sa atin sa kabila ng kaguluhan. Siya rin ang nagbibigay ng kasiyahang hindi kayang ibigay ng mga materyal na bagay.

Ngayong Pasko, alisin na natin ang takot sa ating puso. Sa

halip, manampalataya tayo kay Hesus na tanging kasagutan sa ating mga alalahananin.

Agahan, balikatan at kuwentuhan – a fundraising success The November 15 event held at Canton Food Gallery was the first-ever breakfast buffet fundraising event hosted by the Filipino Members Chapter of the APEGM (FMC-APEGM).

The event was held to generate funds for the chapter’s bursary program, where recipients are selected chapter members who are currently in the pre-registration process with the APEGM. The bursary aims to help defray the costs associated with such.

On that freezing Saturday morning, when most Winnipeggers were still curled up in bed, the chapter’s members and supporters braved the cold to warm up to a filling breakfast and an atmosphere of jovial camaraderie. More than 150 people attended the event, thus, while its main objective was to raise funds, it also boosted awareness of the chapter’s existence in the Filipino community of various professions and trades. Volunteers were up and about to help with ticket sales, welcome guests, and capturing moments on camera. Needless to say, the event had a great turnout and was raised more than $700.

During the breakfast, Chapter President, Angelito Velasco and executive councillor, Nancy Santoyo, acknowledged the presence of the chapter’s members who are currently registered with the APEGM as membersin-training and professional engineers, by calling them up

front to introduce themselves and their engineering disciplines.

The selection of bursary recipients and awarding will be held on December 20 at the chapter’s annual Christmas party.

The FMC-APEGM would like to thank the support of their members, families, friends and sponsors, which, without them the event wouldn’t have been a success. Acknowledgement also goes to the staff and management of the Canton Food Gallery who were very courteous, helpful and accommodating throughout the entire event.

Omar Benson, a not-so-lost boy in MTYP’s Peter Pan

By Judianne Jayme Omar Benson’s list of achievements in the arts is extensive. He not only acts in theatre and film, but also has been involved in musicals and dance through organizations such as Rainbow Stage, Highlights Performing Arts, Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) and the Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP). His talent has earned him the label of “Triple Threat Judge’s Choice” for the 2014 Canadian National Dance Championship.

Judianne Jayme of the Pilipino Express interviewed Omar prior to watching him in MTYP’s production of Peter Pan, where he plays the role of Jack, one of the lost boys.

Judianne Jayme (JJ): At 13, you are already so involved in theatre. When and how did you realize that your interested in being a part of the theatre and the arts field?

Omar Benson (OB): Well, I started to realize that the arts and the theatre were for me when I was about four years old and started theatre classes at MTYP with Kent Suss in the junior division. [I

loved] being myself and being silly with people not making fun of me.

[Also,] I was in the Nutcracker at the RWB School as a dancer and actor, which is when it clicked that I loved to perform for people and make them laugh and have a good time.

JJ: If you weren’t already doing acting, what other field would you be interested in branching off into?

OB: I would branch out to modeling or dancing because dancing has been part of me since I was four years old. Modelling, I have just started, and have found a love for it.

JJ: Who would you say are your role models that inspire you when you are on stage?

OB: Jim Carrey was one of the first actors I ever saw on screen.

He inspires because he has such a great sense of humour; even when he’s not trying to make you laugh he is still funny and he can also be serious sometimes. His type of acting inspires me to be like him but with my own twist on stage.

[Others who inspire me are] Colin Doyle, a Dora Award winning actor, and Fred Penner, a Canadian icon.

JJ: In your own acting experience, what would be your top three highlights?

OB: In my acting experience my favourite highlights are: playing Flick in A Christmas Story at RMTC and getting my tongue stuck to a pole; second is playing Jack in Peter Pan at MTYP jumping on Jukes’ back; and third would be acting in a feature film with Jennifer Connelly.

JJ: Peter Pan is such a classic tale. What would be your number one classic story that you would love to play be in a live theatre production?

OB: A classic fairy tale that I would love to play in would be Beauty and the Beast. It tells such a great story about how “it’s not about how you look on the outside, it’s about how you are on the inside is true love.”
