High-tech rides to replace the jeepney

The public recently got a glimpse into the future of the Philippines’ distinctive mode of transportation, the jeepney. The government plans to replace all

old public utility vehicles (PUVs) aged 15 years or older with safer, environment-friendly jeepneys. As part of the government’s Public Utility Vehicle (PUV)

Modernization Program, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Department of Trade and Industry held an expo held last October showing prototypes of the new vehicles. Local manufacturers built prototype vehicles following DOTr specifications, which include Euro 4 engines or electrically powered engines with solar panels on the roofs. The new jeepneys are also expected to have safety features such as a speed limiter, a closedcircuit television camera, GPS, and dashboard camera. Fare See JEEPNEY p9

#Davaostrong Just days before Christmas, my hometown of Davao City was hit by twin tragedies. On the night of December 22, floodwaters began to rise in some communities that were near the Davao River, which had swelled because of heavy rains in mountain areas outside the city, being battered by tropical storm Vinta (international name Tembin). Hardly anyone saw it coming because the city itself was spared the worst of the storm, but in hindsight, it really was the perfect recipe for such a disaster. Decades of logging (both legal and illegal) had left many forests bare, and without trees to absorb it, the water soon found its way to the Davao River. Add to that the fact that Davao City has never really been hit by a typhoon or strong storm (it’s too far south, and the eastern province of Davao Oriental usually breaks up any threatening weather disturbance), and one can see why Davaoeños were admittedly complacent. The speed with which the

floods hit also caught everyone by surprise. Neighbourhoods saw water rise from ankle deep to lampas tao (over the head) within minutes, and most people were not able to save much of their belongings. Many flood victims literally escaped with just the clothes on their backs. A total of 18,308 families were affected in 25 barangays (villages). And while the good news is that no one died in the floods, thousands of people are now left with the huge task of cleaning up their homes and recovering what they can of their water-damaged belongings. The floodwaters had hardly started to recede when the second tragedy struck, this time with a more awful toll. At around 9:30 in the morning of December 23, a fire started at either the third or fourth floor of the NCCC Mall, a homegrown brand beloved by Davaoeños. Witness accounts said the blaze spread fast, so fast that within minutes the mall was engulfed in black smoke. The drama played out on social media, and because most of the

photos and videos were shot from outside, the first impression of many residents was that it wasn’t such a bad fire. Soon, however, it became clear that the flames were spreading rapidly as flames began to shoot out of the walls. Then a collective panic developed when it was reported that dozens of call centre agents who worked at the fourth floor were still inside. Firefighters, both professional and volunteer, worked tirelessly for hours to contain the blaze. They also tried to get to the fourth floor where the call centre agents were located, but the fire was too big and too smoke too thick. There were initial reports that the trapped people had been making contact through their mobile phones, but these could not be confirmed, which really added to the misery of the families, whose hopes were falsely raised. In the end, it was President Rodrigo Duterte himself who told the families that there was “zero” chance of survival for the trapped persons. They could not have lived through a fire like that, and for such a long period. Davao City has had more than its share of tragedies both natural and manmade:

bombings, floods, fires, and more. But in each instance the residents have shown a resilience that is not easy to match. There is a strong sense of community here, perhaps born out of the difficult past when it was known as a killing field and investors wouldn’t dare venture in it. Those difficult years have made Davaoeños more aware of the need to work together and to make personal sacrifices in order to serve the common good. And while those days are gone and Davao is now one of the most progressive cities in the country, this sense of unity comes to the fore whenever tragedies strike. But for now the city grieves, so much so that Mayor Sara Duterte decided to cancel the festivities that had been prepared for Christmas. It will take time to heal from this, but it will happen, and Davao City will, as always, become stronger. Preparing for 2018 “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin The beginning of a new year brings forth thoughts of new goals, hope and confidence that we will fulfill our dreams. Perhaps there are significant events that lie ahead for you and your family, such as graduations, school accomplishments, career changes, moving to a new home, weddings, births and anniversaries. Or for some people, it will be more of a quiet year, with routine not changing much, and sorrows and hurts from previous times are reflected on. Chances are, you have some plans for persona change. According to time.com, ten common New Year’s resolutions are: • Lose weight and get fit • Quit smoking • Learn something new • Eat healthier and diet • Get out of debt and save money • Spend more time with family • Travel to new places • Be less stressed • Volunteer • Drink less Does this sound familiar?

Have you made these promises to yourself in past years, but fell short of your goals? Forbes. com states that only 8 per cent of people achieve their resolution goals for the new year. Setting goals are a great way of taking steps forward in our lives, but without concrete planning, they can seem vague and unreachable. To increase your chances of success, consider the following guidelines: 1. Keep your list short When we come up with a long list of dreams and hopes, we feel great and hopeful at the beginning. But later, that same list can seem intimidating if we are not making strides at the rate we want to. When we get discouraged, we are more likely to give up. Start with a short list of three items. If you find that you’ve accomplished these goals, simply add three more items. This method of breaking up goals into chunks makes them much more achievable. 2. Get specific A goal consisting of two or three words is too vague and does not give us the necessary guidelines that we need. For example, the resolution to “lose weight” is too generic. We must

add more details to this goal, including timelines. We could try, “I will lose 10 pounds in two months. This will be done by waking up an hour earlier in the morning to run five kilometres on the treadmill. I will also eat a salad for dinner from Mondays to Fridays, and eliminate processed food from my diet.” 3. Get positive According to Time magazine, most people do not consider emotions when they make their plans. Studies show that being in a bad mood can increase the chances of procrastination, then failure. So if we consider how we can also stay positive, we will be more successful. In order to be more positive, watch those thoughts that you tell yourself! Be grateful for what you have, and the successes that you have made – as little as they might seem. For example, “So I didn’t lose any weight this week, but maybe it’s because my body hit a plateau. I won’t take this too seriously, and will keep working toward my overall goal.” Keep a daily journal of things you are grateful for, and nice things that happened throughout the day. Make an effort to notice the good things. For example, we tend to remember the times that

we were cut off on the road, or when traffic is slow. But we don’t notice the times when we make all the lights on the drive home, or when the other driver waves after we let them into our lane. 4. Reward yourself for small successes A great way to increase motivation is to reward ourselves after we make progress. In our weight loss example, we can give ourselves small treats after every week of sticking to our exercise and diet plan, such as buying a favourite magazine, going out for coffee with a friend, or watching our favourite movie at home. This will keep us focussed and on track. If you want to take it one step further, get a trusted friend involved. Give them $200 of your own money, and ask them to give you back $20 every week for ten weeks, but only if you stick to your planned exercise and diet routine. Or else, they can keep it. Hello motivation! 5. Get a cheerleader or two Tell a couple of close friends about your goals and how you will get there. Check in with them every couple of days, whether you’ve been successful or not. They will remind you See CHERYL p5

CHERYL... From page 4 that you can succeed and tell you when they notice any differences. And knowing that you will have someone asking you regularly about how you are doing will make you feel accountable. Better yet, you might motivate them in turn, and get them to think about their own goals in life. 6. Be flexible And last, if something doesn’t seem to be working, try something else! It doesn’t mean that your goal is unreachable; you may just have to take a different road. For instance, if going to the gym is not a good fit for you, try joining a particular sport, or running outdoors. Different approaches work for different people. It’s just a matter of figuring out what works for you. Wishing you a happy new year and all the best in 2018! Open work permit pilot program extended Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a further extension to the Open Work Permit pilot program for sponsored spouses and common-law partners who are applying for permanent residence from inside Canada. In an update issued on December 15, 2017, IRCC said that the current pilot program was extended until January 31, 2019. A department spokesperson noted: “This ensures that applicants are able to work, provide for their families and contribute to the Canadian economy while waiting for their applications to be processed.” The extension is a relief to those who will be sponsoring spouses and common law partners

in the near future and a reminder to others about an opportunity they may not be aware of. Spouses and common-law partners who are sponsored by Canadian citizens or permanent residents can apply for an open work permit at the time of the submission of their sponsorship applications or following such a submission. The pilot program was first launched in 2014 and has been a valuable option for foreign spouses and common law partners applying under the SCLP class. It is important to note that applicants must be in status either as a visitor, student or worker and reside with their sponsors. The continuing challenge for the pilot program is that the

Open Work Permit application has not been merged with the application for permanent residence (sponsorship) and is separate. If you are just submitting a sponsorship application for a spouse or common law partner from inside Canada, you can include a separate application for an Open Work Permit for the sponsored person as part of the paper application submission, but it is physically separate and must have all the requirements attached, including the correct processing fee of $100 for the open work permit plus $155 for the work permit for a total of $255. The application for the Open Work Permit is an important option for several reasons. First, it provides the in-status applicant/sponsored person with

permission to work. Second, the issued Open Work Permit is also a status document. Finally, an Open Work Permit of over one year in duration allows the holder to apply for a temporary Social Insurance Number and also makes them eligible to be covered by Manitoba Health. It is an important step in normalizing the life of the applicant inside Canada prior to their application for permanent residence being approved. If you have any questions about your eligibility, I would advise you to contact a licensed immigration consultant or immigration lawyer for further guidance on this issue. The pilot option is not limited to new applicants for sponsorship inside Canada but, as noted earlier, it also covers sponsored

spouses and common law partners whose applications for permanent residence are still in process. The system may change in future but at this time the extension of the pilot program is a workable option for applicants who are residing in Canada. This program has become an important part in Canada’s commitment to family reunification. #2018Goals My 2017 highlight reel is pretty good. Looking back. it includes the honour bestowed upon us by the Manitoba Human Rights Commission, which I wrote about in my article last month. There were also the times that my mom came out to visit – not once, but twice! The second time she came with my sister, nieces, and a bunch of cousins and their families. There were also the family trips with Elizabeth and the kids – tons of laughs and all around great times. I feel truly blessed. I’m turning the page on a new year. No pressure 2018; but you better deliver! This year, there are some mandatory events that must happen. First, I need to win the lottery. This would be a great start to 2018. Here’s what I would do: • Take a break from the Monday to Friday, 9-to-5 grind • Take a trip around the world with Elizabeth – I might bring the kids • Buy something that isn’t the “No Name” brand • Buy an island • Build a house on the island. I’d build one for my mom too,

but then I’d have to make room for all her friends and a church. Maybe she can just fly in with a private helicopter every Sunday, instead. Yeah, that’s better. Along with the lottery win, I hope that all my children get jobs. It’s expensive to feed them all! Sure the youngest three are all under 14, but does that really matter? I’m not expecting them to get office jobs. Maybe they can develop some really cool apps or create a Youtube channel. Every little bit will help. I’d also like for the world to acknowledge a recent news story where a military pilot confirmed that he had seen a UFO. There was even footage to back it up! You’d think it would be the top news story around the world. Nope. It didn’t even make my local paper. What did?” Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan Markle. In fact, I checked again today, and there was a story on what Ms Markle should expect for Christmas being with the Royal family. Nothing against the Royal family; just making a comparison. Congrats by the way. Harry. You made a good choice. I don’t ask for much. Sounds

reasonable, right? In all seriousness, I’m hoping for a healthy and happy new year. I’m also hoping for peace and good will towards all. Sappy, I know, but I think it’s definitely something we need more of these days. I’ve also made a realistic new years’ resolution, compared to past years where I would make the usual promises: to eat better, work less, and not walk around the house in my underwear. Those

are boring and oh-so-cliché. I stopped putting pressure on myself to start anew once the giant ball drops in Times Square on December 31. It’s just not the same without Dick Clark. My one resolution: I’ve promised to take a breath. There have been many times that I was faced with something in which I have no control. Instead of stressing about it, I’ve learned to just let it go. Cue the Doris Day song Que Sera Sera (Whatever

will be will be). The song was a hit before my time. I have my mom to thank, as it is one of her favourites. I bet you just started singing that song in your head, didn’t you? You’re welcome. Facing the New Year with wonderful things by Pastor Jayson L. Igloria People make resolutions to help them become better person in the New Year but what’s the point of a New Years resolution? I mean, isn’t just setting you up for failure? I believe any day is a good day to start a resolution to have a better life ahead of you. And when you fail doing it, don’t stop and start all over again. Don’t wait for another year to come. Start where you are and face the day with wonderful things that God prepared for you. Let me share to you at least four wonderful things from the word of God that you can start with this New Year. It is found in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” First, as you face this year, bring with you His wonderful love. It is wonderful because it is His breath. When we say breath, it means life. This love shows who God is according to His word in 1 John 4:8 “Who ever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Remember that He is a loving god. It is natural for Him to love and understand you. You can face the challenges ahead of you knowing that there is one who loves you. It is wonderful love because it is unconditional. He loved you regardless of who you are and how sinful you are. He showed His love to you by sacrificing His only son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross. Second, as you face this year, receive his wonderful gift. It is wonderful because this gift is a person. This Christmas, how many toys do you think has been produced all over the world for the kids to enjoy as a gift? How many Christmas cards do you think has been printed out and how many dollars spent to buy something to give to someone as a gift? And after some time, those gifts you will see no more? The gift that I am talking about is not

a thing but a person. Isaiah 9:6: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” A gift that can understand us, can relate to us, can attend to our needs. He is a gift that has feelings. He can feel you, He can see you, and He can understand you. This is the most wonderful gift that the world will ever have. May we receive Him and enjoy Him in our lives. Third, as you face this year, carry yourself with wonderful faith. We don’t know what lies ahead so we need something that will bring us confidence so we need faith. Faith is being sure of what we hope for and being certain of what we don not see. If you have hope for the future you have true riches; no matter how much money you have in your account. This faith can in God can stand alone because He is your foundation. It is wonderful because it has lasting effect. This faith can bring you to God. No matter how difficult your situations will be, if you have faith in God, He can bring you through. Faith will be your shield from attack from your enemy. The moment you lose your faith that will be the beginning of losing your Hope. If you start doubting God’s existence, then you begin to think that you can manage your life by yourself and we all know we cannot do it alone. This New Year, let us be reminded once again to put your Faith in God alone. And Fourth, this year, enjoy a wonderful life. It is wonderful because He promised us eternal life through Jesus Christ. “The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but living a life without a purpose.” It is only by knowing Christ we can have this wonderful life. “The greatest choice that you can make in your life is what will you do with Jesus.” That choice will make a difference. It is a

necessary and an urgent choice. A clear, accurate understanding of who God is, is the most important possession in all of life. We will never understand ourselves or the world around us until we first understand God. Jeremiah 9:23,24: “Thus says the Lord, ‘Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises loving kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,’ declares the Lord.” (NASB) People don’t have inner joy and peace in their hearts because of misconception of God. Today, as we start a new journey, let us bring with us His wonderful love, His wonderful gift, wonderful faith and live a wonderful life. May we all experience a blessed New Year. Pastor Jayson L. Feng Shui tips for making money fast It happens to everyone. Your brakes go out, the air conditioner dies and your dog has to have surgery. When bad luck happens, it happens in threes, as the saying goes. And when that much happens all at once, it can take a toll on your finances. Suddenly, that darling pair of shoes goes away, and maybe you get behind on your rent or car payment. That’s when you need money fast, and feng shui can help! Feng shui fast money tips: 1. Make change. Money is just another form of energy and when it stops or comes to a trickle, or surprise expenses meet you, you need something to happen quickly. One of the fastest ways to make a shift in your energy that makes a change in your bank account is to move 27 things in your house. Be sure to keep count and move something in every room. 2. Spruce up your front door. Without question, the money is always at the front door. Give your porch and front door area a good cleaning. Is there a broken light bulb or a dying plant? Anything that doesn’t work properly, look auspicious or that’s dirty (like a light fixture with dead bugs in it) will lower your financial energy. Spruce up your front door and walkway. Add a pretty pot of flowers here and keep the porch light on and the area will-lit to invite money and opportunity to your home. 3. Focus on the foyer. Once you’re past the front door, your foyer is the next area that is key to income and inviting opportunity into your home. Make sure the foyer looks auspicious, with bright lighting and an attractive entrance way. Make sure there are no dings or paint scuffs on the wall. If the carpet is dirty, clean it or add a new rug. Add a vase of pretty flowers and make sure the area is clear and that shoes aren’t bunched at the front door. Energy lowers by an overabundance of shoes, so

if you have a pile here, remove them and put them in a closet. Consider adding a picture of water here to give it even more of a financial boost. 4. Point the way. We hear a lot about poison arrows in feng shui, but sometimes there are good arrows – especially when the arrows are pointing money into your home. Add an arrow (or three) made out of Chinese coins under your rug at the front door. This literally points the way for money and tells it “go in here!” 5. Get your financial house in order. Keep money flowing in your life by keeping your finances neat and orderly. The more you pay attention to money, the more it pays attention to you. Some people think it’s crass to be financially focused, but that’s mistaken thinking. It’s also a mistake to think that if you aren’t rich, there’s no point in keeping your financial life orderly or investing. Clean out your files or create a filing system to keep your bills and payments orderly. Once you begin paying close attention to money, your energy shifts and money starts coming in. Ignore money and money will ignore you. 6. Start seeing gains. My grandmother used to say, “Water draws water.” What she meant by that is that sometimes drawing water from a pump required putting water into it to help it come out. It’s like wealthy people who just keep getting wealthier – water draws water. Once there’s momentum, the energy builds on itself. It’s also why when you have money problems, they just stay with you. You have to break the momentum by accumulating money. Find a clear jar to put money into every day. Put whatever you can into it – a small bill or some coins –just do it every day. This is especially potent if you do it beginning on a

New Moon. Put your money jar where you see it so your eyes can take in that image of money growing. It sends a message to your mind that you are focused on money. Keep a positive thought as you put the money into the jar and focus on the feeling money growing for you. Feng shui is very focused on symbolism and seeing money grow on a daily basis will draw money to you. 7. The look of wealth. Put your best image forward by dressing the part of someone who has money and who makes money. Get your handbag and wallet cleaned out and fill it with lots of bills – even $20 in $1 bills can be a big “wad” of cash. Make sure you look the way you want to feel – flush with money. 8. Clear up any “money drains” in your home. To open the way for money, make sure you do a good decluttering in your house. Watch, too, for things that look damaged or broken (glasses, plates, bowls) and get rid of them. Go around your house and make sure there is no dripping water anywhere or toilets that are leaking and constantly refilling – these symbolize loss of money. If you have one of those plants that have tendrils that you pin up or a sad plant that doesn’t look full, lush and healthy – pitch them. It’s better to have no plants

than to have plants that don’t look healthy. FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I am currently house hunting and came across a house that is available at a great price. It’s in good condition, but this is where I need your advice. Almost nine years ago, the mother and son were robbed and murdered by their painters and the house has been vacant ever since. The sister of the owner is selling. The house is also below road level. I like the house despite the history and the position of being below street level. What is your advise on how I can create good energy with this house? Answer: As if the house being below road level isn’t hard enough, it also has extremely difficult legacy energy – the energy of the robbery and murder of the previous residents. I had a friend once who took me to his house when we were in high school to study. He was a really sweet guy, but he had a shock one day when he came home from school and found his mother had hanged herself in the garage. She had suspected her husband was having an affair. He was, and he later married his girlfriend and they sold the house not long afterwards. Fast-forward ten years, the house was renovated and then sold to an up and coming restaurateur and his wife.

The man had taken on huge debts to fund his businesses so he arranged to have his wife murdered to collect on her life insurance to pay down what he owed. He made it look like a robbery, and the “robbers” shot her in the garage. Two women, different sets of circumstances, and both met the same fate but in slightly different ways. This is how legacy energy can work. Sometimes you simply cannot erase what’s been done. That energy stays there. In this instance, the home you are looking at is below ground level. What else is below ground level? Buried bodies. These are two extremely strong energies at work here – murder and a below grade position – and no matter how good the price looks, I don’t know that there is anything you can do to erase that energy that’s there. I would strongly recommend you pass on the house. Kathryn Weber is the publisher of the Red Lotus Letter Feng Shui E-zine and certified feng shui consultant in authentic Chinese feng shui. Parents and Grandparents Program reopens OTTAWA – As of January 2, 2018, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be able to take the first step in applying to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada with the reopening of the Parents and Grandparents sponsorship program. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

introduced a new process in 2017 for application intake for sponsoring parents and grandparents, which is expected to make it fairer and more transparent for applicants. Now, potential sponsors must first notify IRCC that they are interested in sponsoring their parents and grandparents by submitting an

“Interest to Sponsor” form. Using a random selection process, IRCC will then invite potential sponsors to apply to sponsor their parents and grandparents. Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced on December 22 that the “Interest to Sponsor” form will be available

at noon EST on January 2, 2018. Those who wish to apply to sponsor their parents and grandparents in 2018 must first fill out this online form. It will be available until noon February 1, 2018. “Family reunification is a priority for the Government of Canada,” said Hussen. “On January 2, I invite those who are eligible to sponsor to express their interest to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada. Helping more people reunite with their parents and grandparents in Canada demonstrates the government’s commitment to keeping families

together, leading to successful integration and stronger ties to Canada.” To help ensure the efficiency of the system and to allow as many eligible sponsors as possible to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada, it is important that only those who meet the sponsorship eligibility requirements submit an “Interest to Sponsor” form. Additional questions have been added to the 2018 version of the “Interest to Sponsor” form to help potential sponsors self-assess whether they are eligible to sponsor.

In a predicament with predictions Some of the things I look forward to when the year comes to an end are the predictions for the coming year. I know, nobody really knows exactly what the future holds, but it’s always fun to read about them, right? Most popular predictions are about someone’s luck and finances, love and relationships, career and health. People have a tendency to believe them if they are positive, but tend to scoff if the predictions go the other way. Do I believe in them? This is what was predicted according to my zodiac sign: “This 2017, you will have good opportunities to develop your relationships.” “A time to look for a sideline or you can start your own business.” “Find time to rest and not overwork yourself.” Relationships The year 2017 had been very good for me in general. It started great, celebrating with beloved family and friends. As the months passed by, I met new friends and acquaintances that I would like to keep. I felt I opened more to people who share the same likes and interests. Sideline Definitely! More than a passion, Zumba fitness became a part of my weekly routine. I just love sharing this fun fitness program with people. Zumba also paved the way for me to help local charities in raising funds and raise awareness for them – such as the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba and Diabetes Canada. Work and rest This past year, I was able to visit more places in Manitoba with my family for some R&R. Those precious moments will be forever cherished.

JEEPNEY... From page 1 collection is automatic, using a system compatible with the current payment system being implemented in Metro Manila’s three train lines. Some of the prototype vehicles can carry 22 passengers in individual seats, facing forward rather than face-to-face on benches, as on the current smoke belching jeepneys. According to the DOTr, the vehicles will also be equipped with free Wi-Fi and wheelchair access. The modernization program has met some resistance, however. Several transport groups and jeepney operators staged a twoday nationwide transport strike on last October 16 and 17 – the third such protest of 2017. They criticized the high cost of replacing old jeepneys, and called the modernization program “antipoor.” A jeepney currently costs

Just like weather forecasts, zodiac predictions can either hold true or not. about 500,000 pesos, or $12,500, but the cost of the new vehicles is expected to range 1.2 million to 1.6 million pesos (about $30,000 to $40,000). And the cost could be even higher, according to a study by Senator Grace Poe, chairwoman of the Committee on Public Services, which estimates the price as much as 2.1 million

pesos each with interest, far exceeding the 80,000 pesos the government plans to allocate for financial aid. Poe warned that the proposed budget will be enough to modernize only 25,000 of the 234,000 jeepneys in the country. Photos from Department of Transportation, Philippines Facebook Page.

Engineering Christmas cheer The Filipino Members Chapter celebrated the true meaning of Christmas by participating in the Feed-aFamily program of the Christmas Cheer Board. Even with only ten days to prepare and collect donations from members, the hampers were remarkably filled in time to meet the December 16th delivery. Volunteers put in extra effort and time to collect the donations. It is heart warming to know that even at the busiest time of the year and with looming holiday expenses, sharing and caring is pretty much a part of the Filipinos’ way of life. The community spirit was evident in the generous donations of food and cash, and volunteers

who made sure each basket included a turkey, toys and all of the fixings for a Christmas dinner. The sincere act to help and camaraderie warmed up the chilly winter weather making loading and delivery a breeze. And nothing compares to the feeling of fulfillment and happiness knowing that a couple of families in need will have a merry Christmas. The Nightingale returning to Winnipeg Lani Misalucha’s Valentine’s Day concert at the Club Regent Event Centre Lani Misalucha is coming back to town for a Valentine’s Day concert at the Club Regent Event Centre on February 14. It’s been a while since she last captivated a Winnipeg audience in 2006 with the Society of Seven. This year she returns with the vocal trio, Baihana. Misalucha is currently performing in the United States where she also resides. She holds shows at the Flamingo Las Vegas with the veteran Hawaiian variety troupe Society of Seven. Dubbed Asia’s Nightingale, (declared by MTV Asia) she performs pop, rock, jazz, soul, rhythm and blues, and operatic arias. Her depth and wide range have been frequently compared to those of popular divas such as Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. However, her powerful and agile voice, characterized by runs and leaps with upper extension is closer to the artistry of multi-media superstar Barbra Streisand. Although technically labelled as “lyric coloratura,” Misalucha has many times ventured into the territory of “dramatic

She also possesses a comedic flair and can effectively impersonate the super-divas as well as Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, Toni Braxton, Gloria Gaynor, Donna Summer, Minnie Riperton, Beyonce Knowles, Shania Twain, and Britney Spears. Since arriving in Las Vegas in 2004, Misalucha has been called the “New Siren of the Strip.” In March 2008, she was voted “Best Singer” (staff pick) in the 27th Annual Best of Las Vegas poll of 8,000 respondents conducted by the Las Vegas Review Journal. This put her in the same league as super-diva Celine Dion, among the readers’ pick for “Best Singer.” Catch Lani Misalucha’s next amazing performance at the Club Regent Event Centre on February 14, 2018. naman kaming nakikitang babaeng palagi niyang kasama, alam namin kapag may special someone ang aktor-TV host. Ganoon.

Liza Soberano tops “most beautiful faces” list Liza Soberano has the most beautiful face in the world, according to a British movie critic. The star topped TC Candler’s annual The 100 Most Beautiful Faces list, ahead of gorgeous women such as France’s Thylane Blondeau, Taiwan’s Tzuyu, and Britain’s Emma Watson. Kathryn Bernardo (60th), Jessy Mendiola (71st), and Nadine Lustre (78th) join her as the only other Pinays on the list. This is the third time Soberano was included by TC Candler, having placed sixth in 2015 and second last year. Meanwhile, the Philippines was also well-represented in the male version of the list with James Reid (4th), Enrique Gil (61st), and Daniel Matsunaga (88th). According to TC Candler, his lists, arranged by his organization The Independent Critics, are “not a popularity contest. Rather, it attempts to inform and broaden public opinion instead of reflecting it.” He continued by saying that they, “search far and wide,

listening to the many millions of suggestions submitted by the public over the past couple of decades, and [that] they put together a list representative of the modern ideal of worldwide beauty.” TC Candler also claims that their list takes into consideration “aesthetic perfection” as its one and only criteria, and that it boasts representatives from nearly 40 countries. SAGOT SA NO. 290

JANUARY 1 - 15, 2018

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept.

Bagong Taon, bagong buhay. *** Ang malaking agwat sa foreign exchange ng US at Canadian dollar ay hindi kaya due to NAFTA’s unbalanced trade between US and Canada?

Pastor Junie Josue is Senior Pastor of International Worship Centre (IWC) at 1077 St. James St. (Worship Services: Sundays - 9 a.m. Tagalog, 10:45 a.m. and 6:15p.m. Halimbawa,

*** Nagbabala ang minoryang political parties na ang nangyaring one-year extension of martial law sa Mindanao may be a prelude to a national declaration.

may anti-dynasty provisions for the proposed new constitution.
